Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received a PM about when you guys get info about the white coat ceremony, registration, etc, so I'm going to put this up for reference just in case any other future M1's are wondering. This is from last year, and they were all sent to our nova email.

mid-May: Welcome to NSU email w/ white coat ceremony info + how to buy your white coat
end of June: Fall registration directions
July: society placement

You guys have still got a while! Get your immunizations done ASAP because it could take forever.

Where are the forms for the immunos? Also do we get placed under a talking hat to decide our society?

I'm curious about this as well. I sent an email to hpd, but got no response. And when I call, they always connect me to Linda Ferris' voice mail -- which still doesn't elicit a reponse.

Hmm that's interesting. I mean, I've called the admissions to check my status a few times in the past, but the initial wait time on the phone was around 10-15 minutes.
I don't mind calling and waiting, but feel like my specific concern reads better on paper than it would via phone. But oh well, guess I'm just gonna call!

Still trying to get this interview invite email issue resolved. It has been over a week and I still cannot get in touch with anyone who can help. I've emailed and called the school multiple times with no success. I wonder how receptive they are to carrier pigeons..

I don't remember what the deal was with the immunizations. Check your acceptance packet because I think the instructions for it were in there.

And yes, talking hat.

many students are there in a society? Is this how the class is split up for doing stuffs like PBL in the second year?

Uh ****. Where can I find more info out? I'm so clueless I've been literally relaxing and bumming since I found out

Yup, along with Anatomy Lab, OPP, Physical Diagnosis, PCM, etc. There are 20 or so students per society.

So where can I send updated grades/activities information to? Just the admissions email? I have an interview in Feb. and I just want them to have my updated info. Thanks.

Hi everyone!

I received confirmation from Nova on January 7th that my application was received and I completed my secondary application immediately. My secondary processed on the 8th and the last I heard all of my recommendations were in by the 15th. I know it hasn't been very long, but how long should I expect to wait until I find out if I get an interview? In the mean time, I'll continue to obsessively check my email and this post!

Does the entire class take anatomy and OPP at the same time?

Half of the class will be in Group A for everything, and the other half will be in Group B for everything. So on lab days, when Group A is doing one lab, Group B is doing the other one. Then you switch.

Well some of us have been waiting many many months with not one word

Nova has a big class size, so I hope I'll find a good group of study buddies and support system far away from home!

You won't have any issues. Yes it is a rather large class size, and you might not learn everyone's name, but the environment itself has a "one big family" feel to it. It might be a little overwhelming at first, but you'll figure it out.

Mind sharing your stats guys and if your OOS/IS? Just curious where they are at with the type of applicants they are interviewing now that its later in the cycle. Thanks!
IS, MCAT<27, GPA, <3.5 c, sc, Great EC's and LOR - great experiences.

I hope I get the notations right here.... Okay so I am IS, non-traditional applicant, 3.4/3.5/28
Complete beginning of August.

II March 4th ! A bit disappointed there wasn't a Feb 16-21st date available as that is my spring break week. Ah well, hopefully there are still open spots come March 4th.

I was one of the ones who had that issue with the email saying I never answered my II. Glad it got taken care of 🙂

Guys, I just noticed that there are 89 people in the FB NSU DO Class 2018 group. With a class of 225 people, this means there are at least 50 (being very conservative) spaces left! Cheer up everyone!

I thought the class was 230-250 ppl.
My worry is that if Nova over accepts people again, are they going to make some students defer? I don't want to defer so I hope they don't force students to defer if they don't want to. Just saying

Med schools don't force students to defer. They may offer incentives to some students to defer.

I don't think they will over accept people this year due to the high number of waitlist earlier in the cycle.

I remember they said you can get half of your tuition forgiven or sth like that if you stay an extra year to teach the M1 and M2 classes. Not a bad option for those that are not in a rush for residency and/or want to enjoy Miami for a change 🙂

That would be a done deal to me!

There's OMM fellowship where you teach M1 and M2. Then they waive your tuition for 3rd and 4th year and you can bypass the rotation lottery and hand pick your own location. I think this might be a great deal. I'm not sure how competitive this fellowship is.

I made the difficult decision to withdraw my Feb 13th interview today. Good luck guys!

They're probably being really careful about that this year, since last year they went over by 30 people or so.

I've heard it's not that competitive, but you still have to demonstrate you're into OMM and are good at it. All the fellows are awesome!

Interview invite, tonight via e-mail.

3.4/3.4 - 29 - OOS

Registered for the Feb. 25 interview. Is this considered a late interview?

Also, how many people do they interview usually..?

Last year late January was the cutoff for acceptances. However, things are much different this year as you may have noticed. I can't tell you exactly what was said by a committee member this week, but it seems the cutoff this year will go much deeper into the spring.

There were about 20 when I had mine, 2 groups of 10, very short interviews

Thanks so much for the feedback, but how many total interviews do they grant out of the entire applicant pool?

they said 900 interviews for 225 spaces 🙁

just remember they accept more than they can take. so they probably give ~400 acceptances.

Btw, does everyone still have their NSU stethoscope? 😉
