My group did.
Although I did get funny stares from the students when I was leaving the school....( I forgot I had it around my neck)

Does anyone have an academic calendar? I just want to get a rough idea of what the M1 year looks like. I tried to find it on SharkLink but no luck.
 
When do we get info about the background ground check immunization and screening ? I didn't get anything in the mail with the acceptance package

It is not a fully integrated curriculum. First year is basic sciences and second year is systems. The systems are integrated in the sense that you are now applying the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc with pharmacology and pathology to understand disease and management.

Oh wow, that orientation schedule takes me back. I totally forgot we had OPP more than once a week earlier on in the year. And I remember that the Ice Cream Social got changed to a Fiesta Friday. We were kind of sad about that.

The schedule looks intimidating, but you'll get the hang of things and figure out which class are worth going to, which aren't, and how to use your time wisely.

The worst part of the semester was after Thanksgiving. We were all so burnt out by then, I don't know how we survived all those exams back-to-back.

Med school is tough, but it's a lot of fun too. You guys will like it!

So you don't get actual textbooks right? You just get iPads? And how do most people take notes? Like old fashion pen and paper or on their laptops, flashcards, etc?
I know it's a silly question but just trying to figure out what works for most people 🙂

Did they say you guys are getting iPads? Because my class had to buy our own. Yeah, they'll download all your books into your iPad during orientation. If you want hard copies, you can buy them at the bookstore/online. I got the some of the actual textbooks because I'm personally not a big ebook fan, but the only one I used a lot of were the books for anatomy (atlas + dissection).

My class uses a combo of iPad/laptop/pen+paper. It pretty much depends how they give you the lecture info. If they give us a printed copy of the slides/notes, most people write directly on there. Other people write additional notes in a separate notebook or type it into their laptop/iPad. If they don't give us a printed copy like for micro, you can either print it out at the library and then write on them, type/write additional notes in a separate notebook/word doc, or what I do is download it into my Notability iPad app and write notes on there. I use flashcards, and I know some other people that use flashcards, and we learned pretty quickly that hand-writing flashcards wastes too much time, because there's so much stuff. So we got flashcard apps. A lot of people use Anki, but I personally like MentalCase better.

They didn't say we had to buy our ipads, but I wouldn't hold it past them if we did.
How much is it..like $500 lol. ughh im tired of being a broke student

I think they recommended we get the biggest memory one, so that's like $800 dollars. Add in Apple Care and it's $900. Some people have been using the mini instead though, and they haven't encountered any problems. I don't think it actually matters which iPad it is or how old it is. So far, we've only used it for answering clicker questions and watching recordings, which is something my classmates complained a lot of during a Dean's Hour last semester. We were under the impression we were going to be using the iPads to take exams on, but I don't think they've figured that out yet.

My iPad is like my baby though. I take it with me everywhere.

lol of course they recommend the most expensive one when the money isn't coming from their pockets 😉 . I'm not that tech savy though. I prefer the old fashion pen and paper lol.
Btw, what is Dean's Hour?

Once a month, the Dean sets aside an hr to talk to the class and we basically just ask him questions about stuff. Some people use it as an opportunity to complain though, and that makes our class look bad lol.
 
Accepted students, has anyone been able to access Sharklink? I have access to Sharkmail(NSU mail?), but not Sharklink.
 
Yeah I have access to both. Its your sharklink email user ID (without the @nova.edu), and your password.
 
Does anyone know if Rolling Hills lets students in early?
I wanted to move down there 3 weeks before classes begin so I can explore the area, and rage in Miami until my social life is over for the next 8-12 years. I'm 95% probably going to live on campus for the first year to get a feel for the school and stuff.

I heard if you ask to move in early, they'll let you. Our move-in date last year was literally two days before school started :smack:

Gonna work for me lol. Worst case I do have an uncle that lives in fort laudy that I can bunk with for a couple weeks
 
Are any off-campus apartments within walking distance to Nova? I heard there are apartements across the street from Nova. Would this be walking distance to the school?

Yes there are many within walking distance.
 
Called in yesterday to see if they took updates and to check on my application (complete 6/29, 3.5/29Q). She said I was still "under review" and that I was still being considered for an interview. She also told me where to send my updates. I am a lifelong Miami resident and am really hoping for some love from Nova.

The closest one I found was Sunforest, which is a 3min drive or an 18min walk.
I'll probably just live on campus for the first year, and get an apartment my second.
Would it be possible to lease a car with my student loans?

I thought there are a lot of apartments right across the street from Nova.
Btw, when should we start searching for a place?
 
I would start looking online now, but every apartment I contacted said they begin the leasing process around May for a July move in
 
Do we have accepted student day sometime in the summer? or something like "second look" day similar to MD schools?

I guess you're right. But I share my car with my two brothers. And it wouldn't be fair to take the car down when they would need it for work and stuff. I guess I could pay for a cheap $4000-5000 car.

But do you guys have money saved up for an apartment, or are you guys using loans for that too?

Maybe, but the Nova site for off-campus housing is confusing.

I'm glad I got accepted, but now the stress of finances is kicking in. Like how are people affording apartments, groceries, furnishings, etc? I'm so clueless on this. Any advice would help!

If you have time, go check out the cars on craigslist. For 5k, there are a lot of good ones. Dealer cars are more expensive.

You can borrow federal money up to the cost of attendance. That should be PLENTY enough to have a really good life, although I don't recommend doing that. I'm gonna try to be frugal and keep my living expenses around 15k-17k/year.

There are TONS of apartments within 10 miles of campus, but just keep in mind that for morning traffic 7:30-8:30, every mile adds about 10 minutes to your drive. There are plenty within 5 miles and quite a few across the street from HPD.

Quoting my post from last summer for those asking about housing. There are quite a few complexes within 500 feet of HPD. Just take a look at the map and go from there. You could always start with Google. Just keep in mind that the apartments across from Nova may be more expensive than the complexes that are a mile or more away. You can always bike to school too if that's your thing.

Thanks for your help. I can tell we're going to be good friends throughout our time at Nova 😉

I don't expect to live a lavish lifestyle obviously lol ... unless I marry a plastic surgeon or dermatologist.
 
Judging by the quick turnaround of people interviewed in Jan, getting notified the following Fri of the interview date, I had my hopes high to hear from Admissions today. So far nothing. Has anyone who interviewed 1/21 heard anything?
 
So for those students who have to drive to class, how is the parking? Are there usual available spots close to the medical school?

The parking structure on campus gets packed by a certain time and you have to park in the upper floors, assuming there are still spots. If you're leaving around 5 and you parked higher up, it will take you forever to get out. I park in a large parking lot next to school and just walk over instead so I don't need to deal with that stuff. There's plenty of parking there. I only park on campus at night when it's empty.

They're supposed to be making another parking structure on campus but I don't see one :shrug:
