Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it safe to assume that they are no longer giving interview invites?

Ah. Ad com didn't show up in my search. Hm. Hopefully the people who had January interviews hears something soon from the meeting yesterday. Keep us posted. 🙂

Nothing yet for me. Been 7 weeks now. Lots of people in the thread have waited longer so keeping my hopes up.
I interviewed on March 4th, about ten days ago, and they said to expect 6-8 weeks for an admissions decision, so 7 weeks sounds about normal...it seems like they really spend a lot of time considering each interviewed applicant.

Waiting for the decision sucks. :bang:

Capt. Obvious

They said today that there are no interviews in April, and are anticipating one more adcom meeting end of March ( two more interview days next week i believe)

I interviewed today, absolutely loved it.

Congratulations on your interview! Did they mention any updated numbers for this year's class? When I was there a couple of weeks ago for my interview they said they'd filled about 3/4 of the class, but that number typically falls a bunch when AMCAS announces their final decisions next month (e.g., people who'd accepted an offer at Nova sometimes withdraw it when they get off waitlists at MD programs)...just wondering what the status of the class is. Did they tell you to expect a 6-8 week wait for a response as well? I loved it there too!!

No they didn't mention any specific numbers other than generally saying that it's winding down and still a few spots left. They did mention the 6-8 week time frame too, which would not be good as msucom requires me to get all my **** together pretty soon since they start in June ...

If you like NSU so much, can you push them to give you a decision soon due to your situation with MSU? There's nothing to lose here. I would let NSU admissions know.

Is anyone living on campus? Have you signed up yet? Still wondering when I should apply by

I wouldn't if I were you. It's basically a studio apartment that you will pay just as much to live in as a decent 1 bedroom. The other thing is that some of the apartment complexes are closer to the HPD building than the graduate housing is so there isn't an advantage in my opinion.

But I don't live there so maybe someone else could chime in

I know but I'm out of state so I can't go apartment hunting. Besides I don't think I'll have enough money to cover a months rent ( since the award reimbursement is 2 weeks after school). Plus all that money shopping for bed and furniture.

Well that makes more sense! Sorry, I don't know when you have to apply for it.

I'll definitely want to live off campus in my subsequent years but I don't really mind living off campus this year . I can get a feel for the area and establish friends and connections in the mean time. Besides I don't think I'll get much sleep as a med student 😉

How is Fin Aid disbursed? Also I think I might live in a house that I will own. PM me if you are interested in rooming, it'll be in Davie. I don't have many details now.

How many people who paid the first deposit decided not to pay the 2nd deposit??

For those like myself who are still waiting to hear back post interview, here is an update. I just called Ms. Ferris and was told that "the counselor is out couple more weeks and so the admission committee has not yet had a chance to review all the applications".

Thanks for the update I wasn't able to get a hold of her Monday. The waiting continues

wow that's such great news for those still waiting for a decision. Hang in there!

Does anybody know how many people are usually on the waitlist, and how many people are usually taken off and given acceptances?

Seems like the class is already filled. So much for "interviewing deep into the spring."

When I interviewed there last month they said it's variable, one year they took about 80 off the waitlist, the next they took about 5, it just depends on the pool of applicants they get...one thing they said, every year in April when AMCAS announces their matches they always lose a bunch of people who had initially accepted an offer to Nova, then they find out they're off MD waitlists and were accepted to an MD program, so even if the class is filled, or close to it, they're likely to lose a bunch...fingers crossed.

That is awful (the year that they accepted 5), let's hope this year it's 80. I wonder how many people are placed on the waitlist to begin with, it can't be more than a 100 right? I mean a 300 person waitlist would be ridiculous.

Hopefully we will all hear something soon. I haven't heard anything since I interviewed 9 weeks ago.
9 weeks. Wow! I feel for you, man. That is unreal. Puts my 4 weeks in perspective for me. Let's hope the committee meets before the end of the month and we can all breathe easier when we get that call.

I hope you guys have already got accepted somewhere else and just waiting on Nova because it's your top choice.

I wish, Nova is my last shot and top choice this cycle. I'm sitting on a few SMP apps at the moment hoping I don't have to drop any more money. :scared:

Hang in there! Nova was my last shot and my top choice, and I haven't heard from them until 8 weeks later. Something good will happen. Just send in an additional LOI or LOR 🙂

I've been waitlisted at three schools:Nova, LECOM-Seton Hill, and NYIT-COM. I've sent a LOI and an additional LOR to all schools. Anybody have any advice to what my next step should be? Or what my chances are of getting off at least one of them?

I know Nova will be taking candidates off the waitlist randomly. Do LECOM and NYCOM tell you if you are high on the waitlist?

I feel like LOI and additional LORs are probably the only thing you can do right now. I don't know what else can help. Maybe try to PM Goro?

All the waitlists are unranked, this waiting game is killing me. Do you think sending another essay is too much?

I don't think it will be too much, send another essay or may be an update on your clinical experiences, anything that can help them to know you are truly interested in the field of medicine and their university in particular. I was shadowing a doctor recently who happens to be an interviewer in one of the medical schools in Florida, he said they have their ranking system in that school, but they won't tell the applicants about it. May be it's different from school to school. Anyways, you still have good chances to get in out of all three wait lists. Fingers crossed for you! By the way, I have been waiting for 6 weeks now, and it was the only interview for me, don't have a good feeling...

I forgot to say that sometimes schools look at the applicants from the perspective whether they will attend their school or not. They will have an access to the applicant's acceptances around US, so there is a possibility they will prefer to take someone who is on the wait list at another school, rather than holding an acceptance or more.

Don't let the amount of time it's taking for them to get back to you discourage you, they probably have a lot of applicants to review at this time. I think it took about 6 weeks for me to find out and I interviewed in January, hopefully you get in and if not there is always a waitlist (that will be sent via snail mail).

Thanks!!! You are right, I was lucky enough to get an interview invite, so I will be happy anyways, it was a good experience) It is better to be on a wait list and have hope than to be out of the game)

What's weird is that no one ever posted a wait list after the infamous August/September interview mass wait list. Either people aren't posting their WL or everyone got an acceptance from October onward 😉

It might be either way, although L5CG posted about his WL about one month ago. After that it has been silent.

Yeah I was wondering about that myself. I was in that first interview group and waitlisted and wondering how many others are on it. I am fortunate to have another acceptance but after all this time and other looks at schools I keep coming back to Nova. Hopefully we can all get some good news soon!

Jan. 21 and nothing yet. Looks like that April 8th final admissions meeting will have a lot of people getting responses.
