**Official 2021 GPR+AEGD PASS/Interviews/Match/Non-Match**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know my friend got his official acceptance letter to the program last week after accepting the offer couple weeks prior. Not sure if that means they've finished selecting their residents or not though.

Can anyone speak on Loma Linda's GPR program and their overall training? Still interested hoping to hear from previous residents.

Does anyone know if Temple sent out results for AEGD?
I got a rejection from Temple AEGD but I didn't even finish the application. So I was surprised they even considered my application.

Anyone deciding between programs in SoCal? If so please PM me would love to discuss!

Hey guys,
I am trying to decide btw NYU Langone in NY and Methodist. How would you rank them?
I want to do a gpr and then apply for Endo.
Any advice will be highly appreciated 🙏.

Are VA programs worth it? Specifically looking at Brooklyn VA; I would have to pay steep rent as opposed to living rent free at home. I know they are prosth heavy and do implants, but how many new dentists actually do implants and can market themselves as implant dentists?

Just IMO being on the interview trail this cycle with other classmates - many (probably the majority) of GPRs/AEGDs don't do tons of individual implant placement training, except for the ones specifically geared toward it along with other surgical techniques (eg. Foundry, some VAs, some NYU Langones). I think a lot of us are just trying to get out there, get more bread and butter experience in a supervised role, and learn how to RESTORE everything we can get our hands on, and the VA programs allow you to do a ton of those services overall in a controlled setting with less barriers providing good care. Veterans pay nothing for their treatment plans, so it's an easy way to explore advanced clinical dentistry options with them and work in an interdisciplinary team. The pandemic screwed D4s this year with general dentistry training, and it would be insane to go out there and work in a capacity where you're expected to produce results (unless you're in a dedicated mentorship or corporate heavy volume with a daily guarantee). I'd imagine implant experience is even lower on the list, and it would be even harder to get or manage that right now even coming out from a 1-year program.

Unless you're doing a program like the Foundry, I doubt most people coming out of 1-year dental residencies would be ready to do even the most simple implant placement (posterior zone, good BL zone) with confidence as an associate or owner. You need reps in that skillset over and over again to form a baseline, and most 1-year dental residencies programs have a Perio/OMFS on-site to do the majority of those cases. Yes, these specialists may encourage you to place some implants if you show the enthusiasm and planning necessary, but they still have a job to do in their facility, especially given the backlog of patients needing surgical help on waiting lists to get definitive restorative outcomes.

I wouldn't advertise yourself as someone ready to do implants right out of a 1-year program unless you're placing dozens of them, but that's just me. Implant management is really hard to do, complications happen, and you're liable surgically for outcomes similar to a specialist or well-trained GP with many reps under their belt.

I agree with a lot of what you said here which is why I'm having second thoughts. Given NYCs population, I don't think the average dentist would even be seeing a lot of patients who have the finances to get these advanced options that veterans are able to receive at VAs. I actually think it would be a better use of my time going elsewhere to build pace and learn bread and butter dentistry as VAs also have a low volume of patients. However, because of the competitive nature of VAs, I guess I'm experiencing slight FOMO lol.

Why would the NYC population not be able to get implants? There's plenty of folks in NYC that can afford complex dental care, just depends on what part of town you're in.

I picked VA because of the following:

No cost / limitations to tx planning
Large amount of specialists / staff to minimal amount of residents
On site lab technician to help learn more about lab work
High quality / respectful patient population
Foot in the door for employment in the future

Most of all, respect / camaraderie with my colleagues and faculty among the military oriented environment

I am in the opposite situation. I am ditching NYC and going to a cheap area to attend the VA as opposed to some of the (high quality) programs I planned on attending next year.

I don't know much about Methodist however given the situation with COVID, amongst other things I value in a program, I think NYU would have been a good choice for me. I would have hated living in Brooklyn and the longer hours would have been tough but the program seems quite strong

A lot of people can't even afford dental work, look at the high volume of patients in NYC hospitals who are on Medicaid..I think that a lot of dental students want to get experience in implants but in the real world, only like 15-20% of dentists are placing implants. It takes a specific kind of GP to be able to do so and cater to patients who have that kind of money.

I work on that population now in NYC, but there's a whole separate population not on Medicaid.

I agree with your second point though, it takes a certain kind of dentist for placing to be worth the hassle.

Has anyone who interviewed for the UCSF AEGD received an email from them this month about their interest in ranking?

Is it a bad sign if you don’t receive interest in ranking emails from programs you’ve interviewed at? I wasn’t sure if all programs do this.

Does anyone have the contact info of anyone at the Memphis VA GPR? I tried emailed both Dr. Savage and Dr. Paprocki and both their addresses bounced

do ALL programs give you some sort of communication that they will be ranking you? kind of freaking out because only 1 program has said that to me.

does anyone know of any programs (preferably on east coast/midwest) that have opportunity to work with special needs patients and a lot of pediatric patients? when you interviewed at places was this part of the pt population that the programs has

working with these two groups is a passion of mine and I wish I had done more research before i applied :/

Lee Specialty Clinic in Louisville, KY has an AEGD program. The clinic works exclusively with special needs patients. If it's a passion of yours, I recommend reaching out to this program!

https://www.scdaonline.org/page/GPRPrograms Here's a great resource from the Special Care Dental Association of GPRs that really hone in on special care patients! I'm not sure about deadlines but if you're thinking about post match, keep this list on hand and look into them when those spots are available!

Interfaith and Brooklyn hospital gpr and they do IV sedation or general anaesthesia for those patients generally though nitrous is always an option. Interfaith has an in-house dental anesthesiologist who is also a specialist in peds and does a lot of those cases/lectures at the program.

This may have already been answered, but if we get into a post match position for a GPR or AEGD, are we bound to it? Say we are also applying to other specialties like PED and OMFS, and we get into one of those post match spots but we had already been offered a GPR/AEGD post match spot. Is it possible to tell the original program no?

Does anyone have information on the open aegd/gpr residencies for postmatch?

Anyone have access to the post-match list? Trying to find it for a friend, but I guess because I matched I don't have access to it?

Yes can someone please post the list I matched as well my friends need it so I don't have access to it
