I think so. I went to NYU dentistry and graduated this past May. I have seen a few years of students who applied for post-match. In 2019, there were so many spots around NYC that you could basically have a choice of 2-3 programs who would offer you a spot without even an interview. Last year it was more competitive. I do not know why.. However, this year... haha, this year was something else. The Pandemic created a weaker job market. It also created a shift in requirements leading to many upcoming graduates not feeling ready to work corporate/private. A combination of these two factors has created the most competitive post-match to date. One example is Bronxcare had 6 spots for post-match. I was told by the director that they received over 200 applications post-match for those 6 spots..... I think anyone who matched or got a post-match spot anywhere in the country is lucky.

I'm sure I'm not the first one to ask this, or maybe I am. But if you participate in the match and get matched up with a program, then decide you don't want to go to do the AEGD/GPR what are the consequences of denying the match? Like they make a big deal about accepting it, so I was just curious if anyone knows what happens if you back out after being matched up.

The dean of your school slaps you in the face

You can get blacklisted from the Match system and can never match to a specialty or other residency program in the future.

What about post match? What if you back out of a post match spot? Since it is technically not through match, are there any penalties?

In case you didn’t know, you agree to participate in the Match abiding by very specific rules when you certify for rank programs. Unless you’re legitimately sick or have a family death, you agree as an applicant to attend that program should they accept you. That’s precisely why the Match exists.

Are cops going to come to your door and force you to go to this program? No. Is it extremely unprofessional to back out on a Match after you went through the process with schools? Yes.

Worst case scenario? The program of interest could call up your dental school and report you to admin for violating the rules the applicant agreed to. This isn’t dental school admissions, where you verbally agree to a program but pick another one that comes up later. If you didn’t want to attend a program you shouldn’t have listed them.

Look, I don’t agree with the non-Match vs. Match system for dental post-grad. I think the system in dentistry is unreasonable overall, since you’re forced to make career decisions without weighing out all your opportunities. But if you’re going to play the game, you have to accept the cards you get dealt, be an adult, and accept the result.

By participating in the match it is a contractual agreement to attend the program you matched with (you agree to these rules when you participate in the match). This is the way the match system ensures a fair result for all participants and programs.

I know several instances of people backing out of a program they matched in. It really depends on the program. Some may report you to your school and the match system. Others will say "oh well" and have the spot posted on post-match and someone else will take it in the blink of an eye. However, someone accepting post-match and then deciding not to attend that program is totally different. Every year tons of people agree to a post-match position at a program and then back out for whatever reason. There are no consequences and the program doesn't care because they will fill it anyway. Especially this year...

Yes, i personally backed up from my match in june due to covid. Didn’t want to move to the USA (from Canada) in the middle of a pandemics, specially with how the usa were handling the virus back then and i’m so glad i did. It was an extraordinary time tho so they understood and i got no consequences.

That was a smart move at the time and you should absolutely have no consequences. You did nothing wrong and whatever program you were at that didn't make a big deal out of it sounds very respectable. I was at GPR in Brooklyn. I was there for two months before leaving back to Canada for a family emergency. I would have stayed if it weren't for the quarantine rules but it just wasn't meant to be. However, I reapplied to several programs in Match and Post-Match. I was able to get some interviews but wasn't able to get a spot anywhere. Every director asked me why I left my program and none of them were having it. My entire family could have passed away from Covid-19 and they wouldn't have taken it as a decent reason for leaving. You are lucky that you escaped smoothly. I am not sure if I will ever be able to get a GPR spot again.

This is not surprising. They will lose out on the GME funding if you back out of their program which funds theirs/their staff salaries, so they most likely would take people who are local to the area.

Yes, you are absolutely right.

did you applied to canadian GPR? i feel they would understand better why you could not go back to the usa.
i got into perio in canada and during my 3 interviews i explained to them what happened and why i didn't go and they all seem to think it made sense.
i'm sorry for you, it sucks and people should understand that everyone is trying their best dealing with covid

Thank you for your understanding. Ya, unfortunately it can be difficult sometimes but it is what it is. I am actually thinking about doing a GPR in Canada. Wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Which provinces offer GPR's in Canada?

Hi, if anyone is currently in a program and has a last minute change of plans, please directly message me! I had a series of unfortunate events and am looking to match to a GPR (preferably in NY area) but there are no spots available. I would be eternally grateful. Thank you so much!!

Good luck lol. You will likely not find one. There are programs that are garbage that have wait lists of 10 + people in NY...

Harlem Hospital Center has an opening for the GPR Program to fill immediately.

If you have any interest please contact Dr. James King via email at [email protected].

Thank you

What is the scoop on NYU Langone central AZ? Very confused... So there are 3 residencies (ASDOH, St. Vincent de Paul, and New Horizon). On pass it said 21 resident spots available, how many are available for New Horizon (this is the good one that gets to place and restore a ton of implants)?

anyone a resident at UF seminole? I interviewed there but did not get a good feel for the program, would like some more info

Are there any good (lots of implant placement is what I'm looking for) NYU Langone AEGD prorgrams?
Please DM or respond if you have any info on any of these that you attended or know about! Thanks!
