It's a big deal for family/friends. Once I sat down for it, I realized how much work was ahead, work that would make me feel worthy of wearing it.

What's more, is that I remembered how many wonderful, brilliant physicians I had come across who were humble. That's what kind of drove me to not play it up and look like I was going to a gala.

Until we know something, we are just a bunch of @$$holes wearing coats that stain easy and spread infection.

Look nice, but not over the top.

I didn't even attend my undergrad ceremony. I do think that short coats are dumb. But it would probably reflect poorly on me for not attending it, at least to the school.

I agree and your sentiments are not rare. My ceremony was a couple of weeks into school and a bunch of classmates didn't want to go.

Go though. Your family will enjoy it and it is something that you will remember for the rest of your life. Plus, it would look bad.

IKR? I'm pretty excited for it too! It's definitely unnecessary, but it sounds like a lot of fun and I think it'll mean a lot to my family. I mean my mom is flying in from a different country just to attend it so I'm gonna treat it as something important, even just for her.

I feel like I am being torn to pieces trying to make a decision. Add to that I'm waitlisted at my top choice (which is in one of the most expensive cities to live in), I've decided to ignore the need to make one until mid-March at the earliest.

Of my acceptances I have it narrowed down to two... but waiting on more post-interview decisions that will totally throw me for a loop if I get in. So basically I have no clue lol. Hopefully financial aid makes it easier.

I think we got the adventure time part, she never said anything about being a single mom tho, and the insult about her parenting abilities because she is a young (and he assumed single) mother makes for a rather tasteless joke...

Agree that it was kinda tasteless - but I'm going to assume he/she meant no harm... @Astra118 we can still be friends (Unless you weren't joking, of course lol).

So I just started reading through the financial aid forum here on SDN. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed since I never received aid during my undergraduate years, and this FAFSA was my first! Are there any specific threads/websites that have been particularly helpful to you during this process? I'm slowly clicking through the ones on the other forum, but some guidance would be great!

As a habitual loan addict (by necessity), I can attest that the process is fairly straight forward:

-You have an EFC (estimated family contribution). That number is used by your school's financial aid office to determine how much aid you are eligible to receive.
-You, as an independent student, are allowed to borrow up to your school's cost of attendance.
-Through federal loans, you can borrow up to X amount of dollars per year (this number is usually less than the COA). The interest rate on this amount is out of your hands. It's simply 'sign and drive'.
-The extra money you need comes from grad plus or private loans. For grad plus loans, you simply need to have a healthy credit score/history. No defaults/bankruptcies etc. For private loans, you need a healthy credit history as well, but the interest rates tend to be higher with less flexible repayment options. Therefore, go for the grad plus. But again, the interest rate is out of your hands...

So really, the whole process is 'sign and drive'. We beg and they give...the terms are structured for their benefit only.

I've been feeling the need for an outlet for my craziness so I made myself a spreadsheet with every factor I could think of that might help me choose a school (and am assigning them weights depending on how important they are to me). I'm going score the schools I've been accepted to and see how they stack up to help me make a decision.

This is what I could think of so far! (Some are a little ridiculous but I tried to be thorough!) Anyone have any factors to add? How are you all making your decisions?

Financial aid
Grading (P/F!!)
Convenience for SO (Job opportunities, nearby graduate school programs, etc.)
Proximity to family
Cost of living
Housing situation (Do most people live in dorms? Would I have a commute?)
Safety of location
Area (Fun things to do?)
Pre-clinical curriculum (2 vs. 1.5 yr, etc.)
Clinical sites
Reputation
Weather
Fit with school mission
Residency match (But who really can interpret this?)
Research
Class size
Interview day vibe
Prettiness of school/campus
Other academics
Other intangibles

Thanks!! 🙂 And it's actually weirdly fun to do this? I ranked the schools 1-3 for each factor and multiplied by the factor's importance to me (also 1-3) and added them and now have final scores to compare the schools objectively! Strangely satisfying to see how it plays out. (And I love me a good spreadsheet!)
