Official Rank List Help Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your top three definitely are similar except for location............do you like hot and humid, warm and dry or the change in seasons? Personally So Cal and USC would be number one in my book, but Miami is also beautiful. I would also probably lower Jeff below Drexel and bring Downstate and Drexel up a notch.

just curious about some of your rankings...if location isn't an issue would you still recommend downstate over drexel for cards? thanks!

Mayo=JH Bayview (depend on where you want to live, you need to interview at Bayview to see how awesome the program is)
Wisconsin=Indiana=Baylor ( I am from Texas and Baylor did not impress me at all)
Case=OSU=OHSU=Cleveland
Boston=Brown
the rest

Oh my . . . So wrong . . .

Cornell does seem to have particular strength in H/O, though, and that can't be ignored.

I assume that their H/O match #s include the 2-4 ppl each year who match to the integrated Cornell/MSKCC research pathway. That will definitely buff their #s in that category.

I'm from the Midwest and would like to move to Chicago. However, I would consider moving elsewhere for better fellowship opportunities. I'm mainly interested in Heme/Onc. Unfortunately, my list looks nothing like almost everyone else on here...

In no particular order...

UIC
Loyola
Rush
Baylor
UT-Houston
Iowa
MCW
Mayo Jacksonville
UMDNJ-RWJ

Howdy y'all! Interested in cardio, but slight chance of Heme-Onc or Pulm/CC. Please rank based on prestige and fellowship placement. Thanks for your help! :luck:

In alphabetical order:

Baylor
Boston
Brown
Case Western
Cleveland Clinic
Dartmouth
Indiana
JH Bayview
Mayo Clinic
Ohio St
OHSU
Oklahoma
Tulane
Wisconsin

Mayo = Wisconsin = OHSU
Baylor = Bayview
Dartmouth = Indian = CCF = Tulane = Case = BU = Ohio St
Brown
Oklahoma

This is what I'm thinking my rank list will be - any thoughts? I'd really like to do some international work in the future and possibly cards..
1. NYU (would like to stay in NY)
2. Pitt
3. UMich
I'm wavering between putting Pitt and Mich 2 or 3 but I really liked the feel of Pitt but not so much Mich. Most people take a year off before applying to cards which was surprising to me...I'm not sure if they need to beef up their resumes or if they just want to make money before starting fellowship. My first three are pretty much set though, just not sure what order. What I'm having most trouble with is the next set -

UTSW, BU, Tufts, Brown, U of MN, CCF, Dartmouth, Monte

I wasn't super impressed at my UTSW interview like I thought I would be. Most likely I'll end up ranking BU and Brown next but I'm really not sure.
Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Assessment: you are going with your gut and not some prestige ranking system

Recommendation: Continue with current gut-going management. Will follow.

Also thinking about cards (original, I know), Got my top 3 pretty set, but struggling with the middle of my list (4-11). Slight Southern bias, but willing to head up north for a better program.

In Random Order:

UTSW
UVa
UNC
BID
UAB
Emory
Yale
Vandy

Vandy
UTSW = BID
Yale = Emory
UAB = UVA = UNC

Would appreciate thoughts on this list. Having trouble setting apart the middle tier bunch. Interested in pulm CC, maybe cards:
Brown
Boston U
Cedars Sinai
Georgetown
George Washington
Jefferson
Scripps Green
Mount Sinai
Tufts
U California San Diego
U southern California
U Maryland
UVA

UCSD = MSSM
Maryland = UVA
USC
Tufts = Cedars
As you like them

I promise you don't want to do pulm/cc in new york (UCSD >>> MSSM for pulm/cc anyway), but there is a sucker born every minute.

Obviously rank the Chicago programs at the top if that's where you want to go. It's no secret I'm a big fan of Loyola, but academically they are not so much more standout than Rush or UIC. So just put 'em on your list the way you liked them, then . . .

Baylor = Iowa
UTH
MCW = Jax

I never know what to do with NJ programs . . .

Oops. Forgot to mention Indiana. Where would you put Indiana in that list?

Vandy
UTSW = BID
Yale = Edmory
UAB = UVA = UNC

The BI for carda is weaker...and emory for cards is unusually strong.

Taking that into account and your southern bias -
UTSW = Yale = Vandy
Emory = UAB (great cards)
BIDMC
UVA = UNC

Long time reader, first time poster. 🙂

I'm interested in academic cardiology.
No real location preference for residency. But I might prefer a coast long-term (or for fellowship if I can get it.)

Thanks everyone! Especially with the middle of the list.

Options (In no order)
------------------------
Duke
UTSW
Emory
University of Washington
University of Michigan
UCSD
Cornell
Mount Sinai
Boston University

For putting them in "no order" you put them in a pretty good order IMHO. Your first 3 are 16 different kinds of awesome for cards and I would leave them there.

Put the rest in order of geographic preference (except for BU...just put that at the bottom of the list or not at all) and you'll be fine..

Please help with ranks 4-7. I really think I'll go down that far 🙁

1. MGH
2. BWH
3. Penn
---------
Stanford
U of Washington
BIDMC
Cornell

I just want awesome training and flexibility to pursue any fellowship!

Thanks!!

I feel so bad for you maybe having to slum it at a place like Stanford or BIDMC.

Honestly? You're going to be fine wherever you go, rank based on which place you liked better. And I've got $5 (of jdh71's money) that says your 4+ don't matter at all.

Case below Indiana? at the level as Ohio St?
From my point of view, Case is a step above and beyond Ohio St / Indiana..what do you think?

Hmm why do u say that? I mean I know ucsd is a pulm/cc giant, but what's wrong with NYC

Please help, especially with ranks 1 and 2. Very strong interest in academic hem/onc. Thanks!

1/2 BIDMC and Cornell

Yale
UTSW
Northwestern
Vanderbilt

Hey Folks,

long time reader, first time poster as well. I'm interested in academics, leaning pulm/cc, but Cards and GI are definitely still in the mix. Leaning UCSF #1, but would appreciate help beyond that.

UCSF
Stanford
Michigan
UChicago
Northwestern
BIDMC
Mt. Sinai
UCLA
UWashington
Columbia

Thanks!

Do you want boston or nyc? Both have excellent heme/onc placement, so its a wash there.
Otherwise would rank as you have then listed. Yale is pouring money into onc right now - lots of momentum there.
As I've said before, though, many programs will keep doors open for the best heme/onc programs...

Will defer to jdh for pulm rankings...but I know sf, uw and stanford are all madd strong cc. the bidmc also had stellar pulm placement...

But since you're not really sure would rank on overall program.

UCSF
Columbia
Mich = UW
Chicago = Stanford = BIDMC
UCLA = NW
MSSM

Hey guys!

Could you help me rank the following?? Not sure what I want to do yet

👍

tufts
usc
Michigan
UTSW
Baylor
GW
emory
Maryland
brown
MCV/VCU

UMinn = CCF
Cedars = USC (match wise, I think?)
Temple
UMass
the rest

Thanks for providing vauable input. I was thinking of ranking cedars sinai above university of minn. Do you think minnesota cardiology is better than cedars sinai assuming a higher probability of getting in house cardio fellowship.

Wondering why Vandy so high and why UVA so low? Comparing cardiology matches from 2008-2010:

Vandy: 7 total (avg 6% of the class)
Vandy x4
Duke
Baylor
MUSC

UVA: 18 total (avg 22% of the class)
UVA x3
MUSC x 3
WFU x 2
Brown
WHC
Hopkins
Cleveland Clinic
U Michigan
U Chicago
Jefferson
UNC
UF

Thoughts?

Agreed. I disagree with the previous post, although Vandy is not inferior it definitely does not stand alone atop that list. Vandy's cards match list is very underwhelming, and I remember noticing that when I interviewed. I think there is very little difference between Vandy, UTSW, UVA, Emory, UAB, and UNC - you could not go wrong at any of them.

Assuming you have no preference in location...I would rank these as follows:

1. Michigan
2. UTSW
3. Emory
4. everyone else

There's not a "bad" pulm program on that list anywhere.

UDub is probably the nicest balance of very strong both pulm and CC. Michigan IMHO is next but is probably more known for it's Pulm. Then Stanford which probably more known for it's CC. Chicago = UCLA, nicely balanced . . . Columbia sits in here with UCLA and Chicago, but I don't like the ICU in NYC, so if you don't mind the nursing . . . Next, BID > NWern (probably equal to Sinai here) . . .

But seriously, go to any of those program, don't be a d-bag, apply to pulm/cc, and match pretty much where you want.

Okay, this is my preliminary rank list. I ranked Baylor last not because I hate it. It's a great program. I just want to get out of Texas for a few years. Let me know if you see anything that abhors you.

1. Mt Sinai Hospital-NY
2. NYU School Of Medicine
3. UCLA Medical Center-CA
4. UC San Diego Med Ctr-CA
5. Northwestern McGaw/NMH/VA-IL
6. U Michigan Hosps-Ann Arbor

10. Emory Univ SOM-GA
11. U Colorado SOM-Denver
12. Baylor Coll Med-Houston-TX

Posted earlier, but got off a few wait lists so here is my updated list. My main priority is to secure a heme-onc fellowship. I still have my Vanderbilt interview coming up, but was thinking about cancelling. Would it be crazy to cancel that interview?

Northwestern

OHSU
U Mich
UC Davis

You can probably match to any P/CC program from anywhere on that list. http://edge.studentdoctor.net/images/smilies/thumbup.gif

Go with where you felt comfortable.

ugh

I get so tired of cardio fanboys and the seeming notion that all IM is good for is getting into cards

lol. I prefer Cards fanwoman. 😀

And thanks everyone for the input. It was helpful.

Another great list with h/o possibilities at all of them. Rank by coast...

Penn
Stanford = Cornell (= chicago = michigan, chicago in particular has great onc placement but if you don't want the midwest..)
(UTSW)
UCSD (= the rest)
Then the rest as you like them

Vandy's an awesome program...but if you're happy with the rest of your list then let it be. I would go (strong program, GREAT PD, in house onc is strong) but I'm biased toward the South.

Would say Mich, UTSW and NW set you up best for onc, with OHSU/UCSD/Colorado also being strong possibilities. You won't go lower than six, likely...

Yeah, I'm a big city kind of person. Since the fellowship match list for most of the schools I'm ranking are comparable, I feel like I have the luxury of choosing based on location.

It's funny you mention Michigan because it was hands down the best program I interviewed at. However, I feel like living in Ann Arbor would depress me - not as much as living in St. Louis or Pittsburgh, but depressing nonetheless.

Cancel Vandy? Yeah. I think that would be stupid. It's not like you don't already have some great programs to go to, but Vandy is it's own kind of awesome place. You really should check it out.
