Official UTHSCSA Class of 2008 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
keekee - thanks for the info! do you happen to have the phone number for them? and how much is rent and how close is it to the school?

i'll probably do the same thing as you... live alone 1st year at least and hopefully meet some roommates as the class gets to know each other... then again, i may just be lazy since i hate packing and moving!

the city of San Antonio has a great GIS website. Gives you a quick idea of what parts of town are safer. I used it extensively in planning where to live (wife and kids).

http://maps.sanantonio.gov/http://maps.sanantonio.gov/

Click on "Uniformed Crime Reports". Might take a second to get used to the GIS interface.

Warning: if you select all the crimes (murder, rape, burglary, etc), the city will look a forsaken hellhole.

Disclaimer: I don't think the city has updated the map since the end of last year.

just wanted to let you guys know that the apts. I live in usually aren't listed in those apt. guide things that you pick up at Walmart or HEB....i just kind of stumbled onto it last year as I was driving around looking, but it's turned out to be a really nice place to live. It met my pretty much all of my criteria that I'd come up with when i was out apt.-hunting like many of you all are now. It's within a couple of miles to campus, not really on a major street (like Babcock or Medical, etc.) not old (i think it was built around 2000 maybe?) and most importantly...pretty quiet. Parking is sometimes an issue, but not really THAT much of a hassle. Anyways, the place is called Saddle Ridge and the # is 210.694.4100. I got really lucky last year and got the floor plan that i wanted right at the last minute, so if you're interested you might wanna call or check them out before long.

Just my 2 cents worth...hope it helps.

If anyone wants apts that aren't your run of the mill, carpet etc, I lived in a phenomenal place in Alamo Hieghts. They actually redid them all as we left but they were great. It was maybe a ten fifteen minute commute, close to downtown, Central market, everything. And it was good to live away from the medical center.

They have hard wood floors etc. FANTASTIC.

Anybody else get poked three times in their arm in a single day to fufill their immunization requirements?

Ouch! 🙁

Glad I got it done and over with though...

JGL, the link still won't work for me 🙁 i tried it the step by step way, but it wouldn't open the c/o 2005 link.

keekee, which shots did you get today? ugh... i feel like with school and volunteering and starting jobs i've had the TB test as many times as you can possibly have it in the past couple years. every time i need it, it's just past the length of time the previous one i had is good for. grrr! i've already gotten the hep B series but i think i might have to get the MMR one... how long is it good for?

I got a tetanus booster (and a gratuitus sore arm), a Tb test, and a varicella titer because I know for damn sure that I won't be able to find my old medical records from the 80's showing that I had chickenpox... 🙄

You're usually done with all the MMR stuff for life before you start pre-school. Luckily it doesn't require a booster!

By the way, lilstina, I'll PM you with all the info you need on Whispering Creek tomorrow, since the link isn't working for ya...

There is a video of a recent talk given by Dr. Wartman concerning the new clinical skills building. Interesting discussion. Also, there is another video dealing with research opportunities.

Hey all,
JGL and I were thinking of going camping in the hill country sometime just between June 21st and White Coat, etc. Anyone from our class interested?

My wife and I own a home in the Monte Vista/Olmos Park/ Trinity University area that has a super cute renovated back apartment that we would be willing to lease to a medical student for a great price. I will moving to Fort Worth for medical school in July.

The apartment is ready to move into and will be under the management of Davidson Properties while we are gone during the next four years.

It is in a great location of the city at Hildebrand and McCullough. We are about 15 minutes from everywhere in town. If you are the kind of person that is interested in living in a cool part of town that doesn't look like the modern cookie cutter versions of homes and in a home with a lot of traditional character, PM me and I can give you some more info.

Where were you guys thinking? Pedernales Falls? E-Rock? Colorado Bend?

No specifics yet... just an idea. Maybe Padernales Falls... any suggestions? Let's find a place with some good hiking.

All of those places have great hiking, with E-Rock being the most challenging. Bonus of hiking out there is Cooper's BBQ in Llano!

E Rock's fine. How many days are we talking? 2 nights camping with one good day of hiking?

KeeKee... Coopers is good but there is even a better place in San Saba.......

Hey does anyone have the match list for this year's UTHSCSA graduating class (Class of '04)?

No one's posted anything in a while, so I just wanted to see how everyone's doing. I've visited SA twice now in the past few weeks, looking at different places to live. Probably will have to go back two or three more times. It's a combination of excitement with tedium. 😀 😴

Oh, and I'll probably stop by the Student Health Center to get my TB, TD, and meningitis shots. Oh fun. 🙂

That's it for now. See you guys June 27th!

Hey all,

Is anyone else here on a waitlist for other Texas schools? If so, do you plan on changing schools if the opportunity presents itself? I?m on UT-H?s waitlist and honestly don?t know what to do if a spot opens up. 😕 The more I visit UTHSCSA and S.A. (apartment hunting), the more I like the idea of being a student there.

Btw, does anyone plan on testing out of Biochemistry? That?s my major so I feel obligated to at least make an attempt. I'm just going to buy the course syllabus from the bookstore and review like crazy the 6 weeks between the end of finals and orientation. Doing so should free up a lot of valuable time during the 1st year. Good luck to everyone entering the final stretch of the semester. 😉

I can tell you that the few people who attempted and passed it, even less who passed where biochem majors. The one of 2 people who passed my year, one of them wasn't evena biochem major. I think 6 people had taken it and 5 of them where biochem majors.

Also I got an a in the class and never took biochem. I knew people who got A's in biochem and even majored in it and struggled in medical school. The reason? I am definately *not* brilliant, but the medical biochem is very very very different than what you do as an undergrad.

So, if you want my advice, do what a few have done. Get a hold of the biochem syllabus and *study that* because that is where the test comes from. You don't have to be a biochem major to do it. You just have to have nothing better to do than to get a holdo fhte syllabus and really study it.

Thanks for the advice Roja!!! However, you refer to the syllabus like it contains information other than a general outline of the course. Are the syllabi in medical school different from what I'm accustomed to in college? Once again, THANKS, I (we) really value your input.

Jason 🙂

Yup, that's one of the cool/unique things about medical schools. Undergraduate syllabi are just one to two page outlines of the course. Medical school syllabi are often hundred page packets detailing what you learn in the course. It's true what they say -- everything in medical school is amplified 100x greater. 🙂

Agreed. Teh difference is that the syllabus is basically a customized text. (ie tehre is no biochem text book) just the syllabus.

My classmates all seem so cool!!! Just got around to seeing this post... been out of the country for awhile. And I just realized that I must be a real slacker. I havent even thought about apartments yet. YIKES! I cant wait to meet all of you guys at White Coat.

That's because we're all uber-cool! 😎

JGL's question reminds me...

do any of you know whether UTHSCSA has wireless internet access on campus?

i'm finally going to look at apartments in SA next weekend... hope i can find something good!

wow... the end of june is coming up really fast...

For what its worth, here is my advice on the biochemistry exemption exam:

The course director, Dr. Ludena said that over the last few years only one person has passed it. Even biochemistry Ph.D.'s don't pass it very often. However, don't let that discourage you from taking it. By taking the exam, even if you don't pass it, it will give you a good feelling for what you will be expected to learn in the course. If I remember correctly, the exemption exam was administered during orientation week, and it was free.

As for preparing for it, the course syllabus is sold through the Dean's office, not the bookstore, and probably won't be available until a week or so before you start phase 1 (after CIC month). So, if you want to read a syllabus (~900 pages for the entire course) your best bet may to find a current first year (such as myself) that will let you borrow it. You can buy from the bookstore for ~ $30, the Biochemistry Board Review Series book and study from it.

This year, the facutly did require a textbook. They gave us the oppurtunity for extra credit by doing some online quizzes that came straight out of the textbook. They were simple ten question quizzes for each chapter. If you took all the quizzes and averaged 7 or above, then 7 points were added to your final average. If you averaged a 6, then 6 points were added, etc. Because of this, it is not too hard to get a good grade in biochemistry. The textbook sells for about $150 new. I will sell my used one for $75, if anybody is interested.

Hi Everyone

I haven't been on in awhile but I just wanted to see what everyone is up to. I popped into SA last weekend to look at apartments and condos. I decided to go with the Carlyle Place. It seemed like the best bang for your buck, is pretty conviently located and I thought it had a cozy feel about it. The small one bedroom was 750 sqft which was much bigger than the smaller one bedrooms I saw at other complexes. Right now they are having a $99 move in special plus 4 weeks free rent, which can be prorated.

I also checked out The Vintage, Whispering Creek and Mission Ranch. While all were nice I found that they tacked on large application fees as well as other fees (parking, rent for washer and dryer, pet deposits and pet rent, etc.). If I had expendable cash I probably would have opted for Mission Ranch. Although it a little farther away, the place is beautiful and they have tons of amenities.

Luckily I got my share of TexMex food and got out of town before the hail came! If ya'll have any questions about those complexes I'll do my best to answer them. Happy Easter/Passover!

Yes I have to agree Carlyle Place was very nice- it's in a cozy location and very reasonable in price.

One thing about Mission Ranch though is that they do NOT have Time Warner Cable available. You have to get the Dish Network and SBC DSL which is a lot of extra money to pay. If that wasn't the case, I would live there in a second.

I think I'll be ending up at The Vintage myself. The rent for the 1/1 isn't much higher than other places, surprisingly, with the discount and all...

I just signed a lease with Promontory Pointe on Med Center Drive. Does anybody else live there? Anyone have any information on this place? I guess I should have asked before I signed a lease but I was only in S.A. for the weekend.

I was a little worried about S.A. but I must say the town is impressive. Cool bars and music scene. It's going to be a good place to go to school.

Looking forward to meeing everybody soon

Cheers!

Anybody going to be in SA this weekend? My wife and I will be there this weekend doing a bit of house shopping. We were having one built, but they just told us it won't be done until September. Bumbed.... We may still buy the new one, but it doesn't hurt to look around a little more.

HEy Guys....

Pillion, hope you guys find a place. Looks like i will just miss you because next week i will be heading to SA to look for an apartment. I think i am a little slow on the housing search. What are all you guys doing to get ready for school? Anybody buying a new computer? When is everyone planning on moving to SA.... the first of June? And i heard that financial aid packages are coming out next week.... is that right?
Well that was just way too many questions.

Only 6 more weeks til White coat!!

Hey Dustin:

I'm not exactly sure when I would like to move to San Antonio; I have a place in mind but still need to work out the kinks. I don't know if I am going to get a new computer b/c they go obsolete so fast and that?s a little frustrating, I guess I'll stick with my old clunker. I'm a little stressed over financial aid. I haven't taken out loans before, so I don?t even know what the process entails, it looks like I am going to get into some serious debt! I wonder if they'll give us a small grant or something. Ok is it just me or did anybody calculate the cost of assistance at $12,000? The tuition is set, but they have all these fees that make it add up to about that amount. Maybe I am totally wrong, and hopefully I am, but I was a little suspicious about the total. Oh and about that biochem exemption, bwuahahaha?.I am not going to even try, I don?t want to make a fool of myself. I mean I took a year of biochem but I don?t know if I should try, I am not a biochem major. Also I am not to sure how wise of an idea it is to exempt a medical school class. I've worked really hard to get here and I don't want to be taking any shortcuts regardless of whether I can pass the test or not. I?m sure others have done it in the past and have done fine but it?s just not my style, whatever. On that bright note, hope to meet you all very soon.

yeah instate tuition is cheap but with the additional fees it does come out to be 10-12K.

its like california and their no tuition but 20K+ in fees haha. i dont even know what those "Fees" are for.

Does anyone know what the parking situation is for those riding a motorcycle to campus? I heard car parking for first- and second-years is horrible.

hmm, i dont know anything about motorcycle parking but yeah, car parking is not great, especially for first year at least. i was in SA looking at apts over the weekend and i also stopped by the parking office to see if i could get put on a waitlist for a parking permit. to get anything zone 1 or 2 you have to be on the list for at least a year or so it seems. you can only be on the waitlist for one parking zone is what i was told. i'll probably just sign up for zone 4 because i think i will have to drive to school and then get on a waitlist for 2 probably, because i dont think 1 is worth it. unfortunately the parking office doesnt have the lists of incoming MS1's yet, so we can't even get on the waiting lists yet. they said to check back in mid to late may, and you have to sign up in person. i imagine motorcycle parking will be a lot easier to deal with though... since those are probably not as common.

so like i said, i went apt hunting this past weekend. i looked at whispering creek, saddle ridge, medical center apts, the vintage, and the carlyle. my final choice is the carlyle, but it would probably have been the vintage if i had a roommate. i'm sending in my app and move in fee today and i'll be moving in at the end of june, right before white coat 🙂 so if anyone has any questions about any of those places, feel free to ask... i think i got most of the information about rent, specials, amenities, etc. that is current as of last wkd.

hope everything is going well for all the rest of you guys!

Hi everyone,
I am excited to be coming to UTHSCSA next year and you all seem like a fantastic bunch of classmates. My friend, Lisa, is also coming to SA next year and is looking to live somewhere right aroung the medical center. She is leaning toward Promontory Pointe but is open to other suggestions or preferences. She is awesome, easy-going, and would be a great roommate. If any first (or second) year students are looking for a roommate, please let me know and I will put you in touch with Lisa.

PS

I look forward to meeting you all at White Coat on June 27th!

Has anybody received an award letter yet for their financial aid? I wonder if I have enough pennies in my piggy bank to pay for a house, a car, and a medical school education?

The office told me letters would "start going out" the last week of this month. I feel you, I have many "important purchases" to make with my loan money!!

i just called the financial aid office now. the guy told me ~400 letters went out today, and they are probably the financial aid awards for the med students. their computers are down today and probably tomorrow, so he couldnt check on anything for me. he said that they are switching systems and stuff so the letters went out about a week later than planned.

so keep a lookout next wk for fin aid award notifications!

Yes, about $30,000 worth.. 😛 .

Good times...good times.

Not so good for the out-of-staters. We're still about 11K short with the 32K they give you 🙁

...only $30K? So long BMW... hello Kia! (or maybe... hello Trek)

Wish I could help you out.... but i have no idea what you are talking about because i still havent received my award letter yet. ARGGG!!!! Oh well, guess I will get it sometime this week. Tomorrow I am headed to SA to look for a place to live.

Anybody got any ideas. Did any of you guys use an apartment locator or did you just wing it?

Other than that I guess I should get back to the hectic schedule of a substitute teacher.... graduating a semester early.... oh the life.

does anyone else that's a texas resident have an unmet need? with the loans they gave me...according to their budget i am still lacking $1100 for the year. i just found this odd. thanks

argh. at first glance, i'm like wow, 30k that's pretty nice. and then i did some rough (and hopefully overgenerous) estimates of all my monthly expenditures and it doesn't leave me with much in the end. so much for paying off my car...

JGL - don't know about that promissory note stuff. you probably want to give the fin aid office a call to see what they say. i think i might do that myself tomorrow. is it just me or does it seem like dec 22 is really late to have the first installment due?

dustin - check back a few pages in the thread... there have been people posting about apartments. i know keekee and JGL made a trip there a few wks ago and looked at some places. i myself was there a couple weekends ago, check my post a few above this one and feel free to ask me any questions about any of those places. i dont think anyone has mentioned using a locator so far... but man, they are quick to call you. about a couple hours after i signed one of those guest information cards at the first place i looked at there was already one calling me!

tuesday - that is odd. i was left with $0 unmet need. i guess talk to the fin aid office as well?

in the meantime im dealing with possibly having to take a community college english class this summer to fulfill some mess with my requirements. grrr...

Every lender offers repayment specials, but who knows what will happen in 4 or 8 years. The repayment breaks will surely change by then. Also, there's a good chance the loans could be sold to someone else while we're in school.

My main criterion is someone without origination or guarantee fees. 4% of 30k is 1200. That's $1200 sucked out of your check even before the school takes out tuition.

I've called up a few of these banks who say, "We have to charge you a 3% origination fee and a 1% fee because the federal government dictates that to us."

$&^%$!

I did a quick internet search and found some lenders on the list with no origination or guarantee fees.

Acapita
AccessGroup
Citibank
Medfunds
Total Higher Education

I'm leaning towards Total Higher Education. The calculator on their site is quite convincing.
