OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any other waitlisters want to weigh in on what you've done to update the school on your status?

I spoke with Lindsey last Thursday and let her know that I am retaking Biochem (that's what they requested) and have a new certification (CCT) for my job.

Beef - when did you interview? Also, when you contacted them about the waitlist, they simply didnt like your Biochem grade?

I've heard that they look for that class, but I think if they like the class so much, it should become a prereq. Just taking it gives you at least a working knowledge for MS1 I would think. Taking any other classes this semester?

I interviewed Nov 13th. I took Biochem at OU and came out with a C (which for the first time in my academic career I actually have an excuse for). So Lindsey said they would like to see me retake it and do better, so I enrolled at UCO. She told me to send a mid-semester report from my professor so I am hoping it will say A+ and they will say ACCEPTED!

Admitted student day is a day to meet a lot of the people that you will be in class with. Gets you rolling on the information you need to finish up your enrollment, plus allowing you to meet with ambassadors/students and ask any questions you might still have. I believe there’s more “tours” if you’re interested, plus some group activities so that you can start to work with your new classmates. It’s a fun day that allows you to get a little bit more intimate look at your future life. J Look forward to seeing you all there.

I'll be there! Both my fiancé and I will be.

My fiance and I are hoping to make the trip from Iowa!

Its quiet around here, anybody know when the admissions committee is meeting this month? Anybody accepted from january interviews yet?

If you call Lyndsey please post back. I'm trying my best not to call - I dont want them to become annoyed - it could be said that I call and talk to them alot 🙂

One person posted an interview next week, and someone posted a friend had one las week. Not sure about adcom though

I got a call from Dr. Stewart about a minute after I made that last post!!

ACCEPTED!!!! OSU class of 2014 :soexcited::soexcited:

Congrats you two! Look forward to seeing you Feb 20th. Join up with Facebook!

Congrats to you too JR! And thanks Phlame and Marsh.

That is a load off of my mind.

Hey just wondering...my secondary appliction was very recently received, 01/21 actually ( I mailed it with one of those receive mail tracking options, so I know it got there Thursday). Anybody know about how long its taking them right now to look at applications and offer invites for interviews? Also did everybody get a secondary complete email notification before they were reviewed or is it a good idea to call the admissions office? Thanks and Good Luck to all that are playing the waiting game and Congrats to all that are already accepted!🙂

You're really late in the game! They look at all complete applications each time the adcom meets but I don't think they're scheduled to meet too much more. They don't send a complete email so if you're unsure just give a call.

Thanks for the info. I'll def give them a call tom...

Hey all, Im driving down from Lawrence to interview this Thursday. Any hotel recommendations?

Futuredoc - I submitted my secondary right before new years and got an interview invite so I would think its still possible

this is the oklahoma state thread, right? and not o as in ohio? because i definitely got a complete email from them.

He asked if they sent "secondary complete" emails to which they do not, however once your application is fully complete (transcripts, secondary, fees, etc.) they do.

Anyone still waiting to hear back should definitely call. My brother hadnt heard back, called, and found out they hadnt received MCAT scores. MCAT people said they got his release request, sent him an email saying they sent them, but for some reason didnt send them out. He shouldve been complete in Nov. Best to call!

I was paranoid about getting passed over due to something like that. With OSU I really liked the complete email, with the other school I applied to I think I contacted them three times over a couple of months just to verify everything was complete (since that school doesn't send out complete emails)

On a side note, I just finished building a castle with my kindergartner, it took aprox 60 hours to complete. We cast 2000 bricks, stacked and glued them together, etc etc. I don't think I spent that much time or effort in anything I've done for undergrad ( sadly including MCAT prep)

haha, at CVS one of the Pharmacists I worked with had to help his son build a castle and instead of doing something like that, he just took home various sizes of our vials and painted them dark grey and stacked them to form the castle wall and all... classic.

I mailed my secondary New Years Eve-ish and got a "complete" email on Tues the 5th and then a voicemail from Sarah Quinten on Fri the 8th (which I totally missed, she didnt specifically say it was for an interview so I was nervous all weekend!) and called her back on Monday and got an invite to choose btwn the 27th and 28th (I picked thurs b/c of my class sched).

So all in all, I'd say the turn around from completion to interview invite can be short (b/c I think just Sarah or Leah look at aps and decide on interview invites?)

to those who've already interviewed, how much did the interviewers ask about current events/politics/healthcare reform?

was anyone asked about insurance basics? (like what is medicare, what is an HMO, etc?)

was anyone asked along the lines of "what are the top 5 prescribed drugs?"

My best advice is to check out the interview feedback at the top of the website, it will answer the majority of your questions.

However since I did post, i will recap mine.

My interview was extremely conversational but I could tell where my interviewers were weaving in probe questions, but overall it was relaxed. I was honest, yet a bit satirical with what I said to a certain degree to the point that the three of us had a few good laughs.

I am kinda fuzzy on it now, but it started off with the bland straight forward direction of "tell us about yourself" so I started off with my general answer to why medicine and as I mentioned facts about my life, they would probe further. They asked a little about my three years experience as a pharmacy technician, but only experience wise. No drug questions, or insurance, etc....

They briefly touched on the politics probing how well informed I was about the democratic push for insurance reform and all, but nothing more than skipping on the surface.

Ultimately, they most in depth probed on my deep life experiences as they were genuinely trying to judge me as a whole and dig into me as a person. Most people will say this same thing.

Good luck!

Bellak - dont worry about the interviews. Very laid back, just be yourself and enjoy the day.

Any of you guys interviewing in Jan or Feb care to share you stats? Just curious, not trying to be offensive or intrusive

Thanks for the info....I decided to call and spoke to Dr. Cunningham, who was really nice, and my app is complete so just wait time now. Good Luck on your interview!🙂
BTW are you OOS? I'm from Texas and wondering if its gonna make a difference since I hear they prefer instate...

Got a call from Dr. Cunningham a little while ago, my interview's been postponed from tomorrow to next thurs. Stupid ice storm.

I am in-state, I'm from Tulsa actually. Lived here since 5th grade! Since OSU is a state funded school, they do have a pref for in-state students, perhaps 75%+ of the student body is in-state (just a guestimate, might be more). That being said, out of staters still have a shot! They like to see diversity! Do you have any ties to OK?

My stats are 3.28 and 3.19 science (both retentive). Not too good but considereing when I graduated from OU in 2008 they were 3 and 2.9....My MCAT is not so hot...26N. 12V(!!) 6P 8B. Crazy unbalenced. The OU adcom thinks verbal is the best predictor of success in med school and hopefully OSU thinks the same!? Does OSU take the combined highest mcat? b/c last time I took it I got an R in writing.

OSU does not combine mcat scores, the writing score means nothing. I speak from experience, mine was horrible and it was never mentioned.

Pretty sure they take more like 90% Oklahoma Res. Congrats on your GPA resurrection work - have you been doing post bacc work or Grad to raise GPA? Also, did they say anything about the 6P MCAT? I know a girl who didnt apply this time around because website says minimum 7 on each section. She will be bummed to hear she should have sent in app.

Good luck to you at the interview next week!

Thanks! haha, ya its definately more like 90% but I thought if I said 75 it'd give futuredoc a little more hope, lol. I am just doing an informal post-bac to raise my gpa.

In the brochure book I got from the school at med-xtravaganza last spring(and I remember reading on the website in the past) it just says a minimum of 7 for the MCAT but doesnt specifically say 7 in each section so I kind of just crossed my fingers and hoped it ment average. Plus that was an august score and I had already put off my application by a year b/c I was unhappy with my score before and didnt want to put off again.
But I just checked the website and now it says 21 min.

They havent said anything to me about the 6P yet and thank goodness my mcat and gpa arent known to the interviewers. I am confident (or almost there) that the rest of my application is good and makes me a competitive applicant, hopefully enough to balence out the numbers when they have to score me a second time.

I have lots of shadowing experience in various fields (100+ hours), volunteered at a hospice for a short while and have worked as a CNA at St Johns (oncology/palliative care floor) for almost a year and this past summer I did research at OU med school (INBRE) and got a strong LOR from my MD mentor (I have a DO letter too). I was also in marching band at OU for 5 years, was super involved in it (service chair of the band service sorority) and have a strong character reference LOR from my band director.

Although, besides the numbers, another weak point for me is that I dont have a lot of "community" service or volunteer experience. Esp since graduation in 08, I have been spending all my time focusing on grades and working.

I know of someone accepted this cycle with a 6 in one section

Bellakk - sounds like you have a lot of good things to talk about in your interview. Good luck!

Yeah Bellakk looks like lots of good experience, Good Luck! 🙂

As for being OOS I'm keeping mu fingers croosed, guess ill see. I have a 6 in a section as well and I applied cos it sounded like it was a min avg of 21. My MCAT is 23O, BS9, VR8, which is not good at all but my GPA I hope is competitive enuf Sc 3.45, NonSc 3.91, OVerall 3.65 and I'v got some strong letters, M.D and D.O. letter and a decent amount of both health and non health related volunteer work. Just got a job last week getting trained as an ophthalmologist tech so hope that helps as well....Good Luck again and thanks for all the info!🙂

I got the call from dr Stewart on Friday and she said the paperwork wouldn't be here til Tuesday cause the computers were down, now it's Thursday and I still haven't gotten it, anyone else got the same problem.

the acceptance packet? Dont worry about it, its just a whole bunch of misc. paperwork you sign and all, other than the "acceptance letter." I know the anxiety though, but just saying, it will allllll be okay! lol

On a side note, I was looking into the State of the Union Speech, specifically the discussion of capping income-based loan repayment at 10%. While reading that, I discovered this:

[FONT=arial, helvetica]The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007
http://www.finaid.org/loans/publicservice.phtml

"
.[FONT=arial, helvetica]established a new public service loan forgiveness program. This program discharges any remaining debt after 10 years of full-time employment in public service. The borrower must have made 120 payments as part of the Direct Loan program in order to obtain this benefit."

Further:

"
.[FONT=arial, helvetica]The borrower must be employed full-time in a public service job for each of the 120 monthly payments. Public service jobs include, among other positions, emergency management, government (excluding time served as a member of Congress), military service, public safety and law enforcement (police and fire), public health (including nurses, nurse practitioners, nurses in a clinical setting, and full-time professionals engaged in health care practitioner occupations and health care support occupations), public education, early childhood education (including licensed or regulated childcare, Head Start, and State-funded prekindergarten), social work in a public child or family service agency, public services for individuals with disabilities or the elderly, public interest legal services (including prosecutors, public defenders and legal advocacy on behalf of low-income communities at a nonprofit organization), public librarians, school librarians and other school-based services, and employees of tax exempt 501(c)(3) organizations."

So if I am reading this correctly, could Doctors who work for say a state owned hospital such as OSU-Medical Center have their loans forgiven given they meet the rest of the criteria? How would residency count and such?

//edit//
After some further reading at: http://www.aamc.org/advocacy/library/educ/ed0004.htm

I found this:
"
.Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
P.L. 110-84 also authorizes a new "public service" loan forgiveness program, effective July 1, 2009. Physicians will be eligible for the program after 10 years of loan repayment while practicing in a "public service" job. The definition of "public service" includes 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, faculty in "high-needs areas (as determined by the Secretary of Education), and service at private organizations providing "public health" or "emergency management" services. P.L. 110-315 clarifies the definition of public health to include "full-time professionals engaged in health care practitioner occupations and health care support occupations, as such terms are defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics." Only Direct Loans are eligible for forgiveness, but borrowers may consolidate other federal loans under a single Direct Consolidation Loan. Physicians that participate in the income-based repayment program could save over $75,000 on their total loan repayment."

I will do further reading, but I assume if you work for any hospital with anything that provides emergency servicies, you would qualify since it mentions private organisations in the literature.

That sounds good, but I fully planned to live poor for a few years and pay off the loans quickly. God help me if I'm paying on them over ten years.

haha I understand that, but its an option!

I retook mcat today anyone else applying to osu retake? I was pretty lucky and took it in arkansas so not much bad weather I would imagine ok city and tulsa test was cancelled.

Dont know what happened JR - mine got here Tues. Hopefully yours has arrived by now. Phlames right though, not any new info really.

I'm considering a strategy for helping pay for medical school (if I am so lucky as to get into OSU-COM) and I wonder what you all think about it.

In 2011, when I hope to start, the upstairs of my home will have 2 empty bedrooms and a big family room. I'm considering offering to rent room and board to a couple of my male classmates and turn the family room into a group study room. I live in Broken Arrow, with about a 20 minute drive to OSU and since my home will already revolve around the school schedule, then the family meals, sleep, noise, etc would all be similar to each other.

I wonder if this sort of arrangment would be attractive to OSU-COM students.

I would be interested in a situation like that except aren't you married? That would be a deal breaker for me.
I'm married too and could never have roommates living with us. All couples argue/disagree about things. I wouldn't want to be the person that potentially could put extra strain on someone elses marriage.

I wouldn't pay more than 100-200 dollars a month for a "room", so if you make $400 a month off that situation it just doesn't seem worth it to me. Now if everyone was single, I say why not. But families need space.

Yeah, I agree with you on families. And this isn't for this upcoming year anyway. I was thinking more along the lines of a couple of single guys who would like the convenience of having meals/laundry etc being handled for them - a kind of live-in mama. (after all, my wife is old enough to be most med students mother 🙂 and a studius atmosphere in a nice home.
