OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In the Pros and Cons of Your DO School thread there is a review of OSU that makes OMM at the school sound terrible. It talks about having multiple professors teaching, repeat questions, questions with no right answer, and random grading on practicals, but the review is from 2007. Have you run into any of these problems?

probably from someone who either wasnt good at OMM or had a bad attitude about it.

although i am biased and i have no idea how it is elsewhere, I'd say OMM at OSU is good. There are different professors who teach different lectures... i'm guessing because everyone's strengths lie in different areas.

repeat questions, although i havent seen any yet, probably exist to emphasize an important topic/modality.

questions with no right answer- again, i suspect the individual who described this in the other thread probably wasnt good at omm or had a bad attitude about it. if there was an incidence of a test question with no right answer, the exam question would be reviewed and thrown out. people make mistakes and professors writing questions make mistakes too. but the school is fair about it- we always get points back if they make errors.

i have seen variations in grading on practical exams. some graders are "tougher" than others but they wont be any more critical than is fair. if you just dont get something and try to BS your way through a treatment modality, they will probably ask you to retest... but they give you plenty of opportunities to practice and retest. its not unfair.

a final note about it- some people get it, some people dont. it's pretty easy to learn but it's not so easy to be really good at. we have some really good instructors here and i'm pretty impressed with the OMM at osu.

Ok thanks. I can't find this information anywhere, but does Goljan still teach there? And does he just teach pathology?

Yes he still teaches, yes hes still the Ultimate Pathology teacher here, and yes he does a FREE review for the Step 1 exam for us where as he charges 1k plus per student when he travels around and does reviews for other Medical Schools. 2nd year, we also have access to a video library of his lectures and of his board prep series.

this is really good to know... Thanks Phlame and iastros for all of your help in answering our questions. I know you both must be really busy. I appreciate it

Luckly they just finished the re-surfacing of 75 at the i-44 junction, but right now SW Blvd is also under construction (the only exit for the school off of 75) and today at 7:15 am I was stuck in traffic for 40 minutes and got to school with 5 minutes to spare (leaving from 81st and Union). A friend who lives in the same complex left at 7:45 and was in traffic until 9:00. Its friggin rediculous.

for those of you interviewing these upcoming weeks, make a note of this.

If your route takes you through the intersection at southwest blvd and 23rd street, give yourself enough time to deal with nasty traffic jams

I land in Tulsa at 2:38 on the 4th and leave at 5:40 on the 5th. So hopefully I have enough time to get from the interview to the hotel to pick up my bag and then get to the airport in time. What is your plan?

I land in Tulsa at 11pm... eeek, but I have a midterm that day and it was the only flight that worked. I leave at 7:55 on the 5th. I won't have a room anymore so I guess I'll just be doing the same as you and hang out in the airport.

You all could always hang out at the school, we have a lounge with a TV and then head to the airport when needed. Up to you. It would give you time to meet the students and all, our class is done at 12:00 on Friday.

Yeah that would be cool. I have one more question. Sorry I keep thinking of things. Does OSU ever offer out of state students in state tuition? I know that MSU-COM and some other public schools do this, but WVU-SOM doesn't. Do you know if this is an option here?

To the extent of my knowledge in this area, which is little, no they do not. I believe the only way to get in-state is if you have instate ties (lived here then moved away to do undergrad) etc.

Yeah hopefully you don't have any delays. My flight was like that when I flew into Arizona.
my trip to Arizona was a lot like your trip to Tulsa haha.

Phlame, they do have scholarships you can apply for though right?

The reason med schools rarely charge in-state for OOS applicants, and the reason they accept so few OOS applicants, is because much of your tuition is actually subsidized by the state and if you're not going to practice in the state, there's little incentive to subsidize you. It makes sense if you think about it, though. The state wants a return on investment, and if it expects it won't get it, it'll charge you the difference in cost.

First year there isnt alot, but 2nd-4th there are a ton.

Yeah I understand why they do it, but even so, I know of people who have done it. Some schools don't even consider it, and others do occasionally.

I don't think this is a school issue but rather a state law/regulation issue. There is a legal definition of a state resident when it comes to qualifying for higher education and the state funded schools have to follow that.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure all Ohio schools allow you to become a resident after the first year. From their website: "It is possible to become an Ohio resident as a student. The two most common ways our students obtain Ohio residency include: married students whose spouse gains Ohio employment making self-sustaining income can apply for in-state residency as early as their first year of medical school. Unmarried students are eligible to apply once they have financially supported themselves in Ohio for one full year. For more details and other possible ways on how to obtain Ohio residency, please visit the Registrar's residency web page" http://medicine.osu.edu/students/financial_services/coa/Pages/default.aspx

I think you strayed to the wrong thread. this is OSU as in Oklahoma, not Ohio. Woops.😀

A week until my interview; gettin' pretty nervous! I thought my interview would be sometime next year. In the past my interviews were always late (February or March) so I'm not sure how I should interpret getting a November interview.

Its nothing to sweat. You're past the applicant selection, undergrad trials and tribulations, MCAT, and are fortunate enough to be early! You're in the home stretch, keep your act together and be yourself, be genuine, and be humble and all will go well.

I was hoping yall would here today... Judging by the quietness on this thread, I'm assuming no

We have three professors. You're typically divided into two groups (1 and 2) by last name. Within those groups, you're further divided by height into groups of 4 and assigned to a cadaver (helps with back strain and table height). We had 11 groups within each big group this year.

Group 1 goes to lab @ 1:00 and Group 2 @ 3:00 M,T,Th each week and then flip after each test.

Lab is pretty well self directed (via a dissector manual) with the teachers there to aid you, answer questions, etc. We have occasional TAs from the 2nd years, but they show up according to their class load at the time. There also have two bodies that were dissected completely over the summer so you can have some reference as to what you're looking for and all.

thanks! that sounds a lot better than some places where you only get to dissect every few weeks and the rest of the time you watch

Assigning by height sounds like a pretty good idea. Can't imagine how sore I'd be if I had to bend over for hours to dissect.

A friend and I haven't heard anything yet from our interviews in October, but they said it would be 2 weeks. Hopefully, we will here early this coming week.

If it's like last year, they usually interview in "blocks" and then make decisions at the end. Chances are this block will be late October and early November, with decisions in mid November.

I had a call 10 days after my interview and I interviewed on a Wednesday, well, the first interview day.

They did interviews every other week during my year though; this year, they've done two weeks consecutively and then one week off. I'd expect calls any time next week.

Hey all,

I talked to Sarah today and she said that there a 3-4 people from OOS that may be staying in the Crowne Plaza... We should probably coordinate a time for the shuttle to take us the morning of the interview. What time do yall think will be a good time?

Well, three days until the big day. If any of you are interviewing on the 4th, I look forward to meeting you! I'm nervous, to say the least, but at least we'll all be nervous together

I talked to her about the same thing today. I don't know how far away the hotel is from the school, but I think 7:15 is probably a safe time to leave the hotel. That should give us time to get to campus and find the right building. We need to be in the hotel lobby well before that though. The lady there told me that the shuttle gives priority to airport rides, so we need to check with the desk when we check in and get there early in the morning in case it has to make a trip to the airport sometime that morning.

okay.. so like 6:45 in the lobby?!

Crowne Plaze is not far from OSUCOM and the campus is not large (basically one big buidling) so you all shouldnt have a hard time finding your way.

Good luck with the interview.

Its a 5-10 minute drive from the crown to OSU. Depends on the route taken and the traffic, but if you leave at 7:15 I see it taking no longer than 10 minutes.

Has anyone heard about when those of us who interviewed in October will get notification? It has been two weeks tomorrow.

I haven't heard anything yet... I interviewed Oct. 21st. and was really hoping to hear something today because I'll be flying tomorrow, interviewing thursday and probably wont be able to answer my phone 🙁

Considering the second interview group starts tomorrow and goes through friday, do you think they are maybe combining the two?

I think they will combine the two, however as I said before it only took a week for me. You can always call or email Sara and see what the status is.

If it is anything like I experienced last year, they will combine all the close interviews and decide together. Anyway, tomorrow is my day! Wish my luck and I hope your day went well! Look forward to meeting you tomorrow, Phlame!

Just talked the school. Notifications concerning the October interviews is going out today or tomorrow.

Yep, the acceptance calls are going out. Just received mine right around 3. So everyone be waiting by your phones lol.

Yep got my acceptance call from Dr. Stewart around 3 this afternoon as well. For any interested:

Got the call as well, while sitting in biochem.. What a relief. Maybe now I can finish the semester inspired!!!
