OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I appreciate the support, but I've been rejected and/or waitlisted for medical schools for five years now. Kinda hard to cling to hope that long, even though I do. I guess I'm stubborn!

Congrats, by the way. I'm surprised at how many out of state applicants they've accepted so far. Glad you guys got a chance!

Congrats to everyone accepted!

Phange: You've fought for a while, don't give in...

Denco: Are you going to accept or are you debating where to go?

I'm about 99.9% sure this is where i'll be next year... i just felt like it fit, if that makes any sense...

Yeah why did you edit that... I wanted to hear from Dave!

My bad. I was in the wrong forum. I meant to remove mine from a school that I just declined an acceptance at. I clicked on the wrong one and didn't read them as I removed them. To answer your questions, no I was not hiding anything. All I had posted here were some general questions about the school from a month ago and hotel information. I keep getting private messages from people regarding a question I asked in another forum so I wanted to go and remove my question so I can stop getting the messages. Like I said, my bad.

No, its fine, just curiosity on my part. I didn't know if OSU or an associate of had bothered you. I understand the whole PM thing, I dont mind questions from this forum but I posted an ad a while back that had a link to a few copy of Lexi-Comp for iPod/iPhone that was good for a week and then over the next year I recieved PM's asking for an updated coupon. I finally deleted my post so they would stop.

Yeah that's what I was trying for, but apparently I can't read.

What happens next? White Coat Ceremony? When do we all come together?

Waitlisted. Looks like I am stayin' in this topic. Got my letter today.

waitlist is a good area to be at. Just means you have every round to go to get an acceptance! You will recieve information on accepted student day late in January for the majority of those accepted and the one accepted after that have a second admitted student day in April sometime.

I was complete several weeks ago. Do they call OOS applicants last for interviews?

I'm OOS and had an interview on the 5th... 4 out of the 8 people at my interview were OOS... but i was complete a bit before you... you still have lots of time...

good luck!

@phange: I applied three times to OSU and made it into the bridge program this past year. I will be a ms1 in the fall, hang in there you received a really early interview.

The waitlist which as others have said is a very good place to be this early. OSU just does things a little different than other schools since they don't fill the majority of the class right off the bat. Keep calling, ask what you can do to improve your application. If you have not had histology, or anatomy take them both expecially histo. if you are going to OSU you want to have already taken this class. Any questions pm me and I will be happy to answer them.

Congratulations to everyone accepted

Just got home from the plane ride. Everyone at the school was ridiculously friendly to both me and my wife. It is hard to not immediately feel attached to the school, the faculty, and the students. (If I wasn't a guy this is where I'd insert the little heart/happyface emoticon)

MLT was there Friday and so was I. It was very nice meeting you all. Seems like a great school and now the waiting game begins.

P.S. - I was the "old" Asian guy there.

Did you interview friday MLT?

Yeah, as cell said, I was there. I was the "not quite as old as the old asian guy with the facial hair", that might be a little long for a nickname I'll have to work on that.

Looks like the last group only had to wait a week, here's hoping.

Can they really pull me off the waitlist at every decision cycle? I mean, every time they decide to admit people? That sounds like decent odds! Any regards to people who have been on the WL a long time or were WLed last year?

I've been complete since 10/1 and still no word...and also sent in update letter two weeks ago...getting worried. 🙁

I wasn't able to make it by the interview room on Friday, so sorry to yall. However, you saw me in the Anatomy lab when you stopped by there. I was one of the last two students in there cleaning up while you all were on your tour. I was in the orange OSU shirt and black scrubs (but I has my lab scrub top on which was puke green lol). I was hanging out in the corner by the sinks.

Anyways, best of luck to yall.

And to Phange: yes.

What are you stats and did you recieve an all complete from them or is that when all your materials were in?

Phlame, do you know if they give preference to people who were waitlisted last year?

Sooo how does everyone feel about a Class of 2015 facebook group?!

Hey Phange,
just got my waitlist letter (interviewed 11.5). I was waitlisted last year, made the final waitlist and did not get in. I am hoping they give preference to those on the waitlist from last year, but would not bet on it. They clearly liked us from last year since they invited us back to early interviews this year, but I am trying not to read much into that and let it drive me crazy.

Best of luck to you, this is my first time to post on SDN but I have been reading your posts for over a year now!

Hey! I think I remember you from that day. You are the guy that is at UNT right now right? I bet all they want you to do is send in your fall grades!

Usually when you're waitlisted, its because you've shown improvement (hence you got an interview) but compared to those around you, you're interview and/or stats aren't competitive. Or so I understand.

As far as the previous applicant quality, it can help or hurt. If you improved, got more experience, etc... then it helps. If you didn't do anything to improve, it will likely hurt you. but overall, its impossible to tell you one way or the other because I wasn't there for your interview and I don't know how the Adcom weights everything.

I have a few more questions that I didn't think of at the interview if you guys have time whenever. During lunch a student was telling us about a histology class that starts during the Summer to get a head start on that. Can anyone take that or is it limited to a few students? I think he said that it's online. And I will be married by the time I start school, would my wife be allowed to use the gym there? A couple other schools I interviewed at allowed that, and she liked that, but I forgot to ask here. And one more, how are grades done? Is it letter grades, or class rank, or both? Thanks.

Just found the answer to the grading question on the website. I missed that before.

Summer history: it's all online and covers about 75 to 80% of the first test material. Summer course is pass/fail. The first test is historically the hardest and weighted the most at 35 percent of your grade. If you have any cell biology background and/or formal histology I wouldn't recommend the summer course. I didn't take it and am doing just fine, but I know people who took it and are still struggling. It all boils down to your skills.

Gym is open to family but no young children (safety).

Grades are traditional with A B C D F, c is passing and a percentage grade is given. There is also class rank.

Thanks for the help. Is there anything on the website about the online course? I can't find it anywhere. I was going to check if it is additional tuition, the dates of the class, and the dates and process for signing up.

There is no info online. You will receive information at the end of June about a week or two before the class starts asking you if you want to enroll. It is additional tuition, and it is rolled into your Fall tuition so you don't have to worry about it that summer. It is the entire month of July and typically starts the first Monday of July and runs till the end of the month.

I got a call today for an interview for Dec 1st! I'm a TX resident and wasn't sure when/if I'd hear from an OK school. Woot. Excited.😀 (One of my letters came in late, so my file was completed 11/8. I'm encouraged by the quick turn-around time!)

If calls for invites went out today, calls for acceptances will go out tomorrow. 75% sure on that. Congrats on the interview!

Would they be calling those who interviewed two weeks ago, or would they have considered last week's interviewees by this point as well I wonder.

Two weeks ago already went out. If you recieved a waitlist letter, then you will be reviewed every cycle from here on out. So yes, you could potentially get a call tomorrow or friday. BTW: just because calls go out tomorrow wont mean that more calls wont go out friday. There have been calls over two days before.

Does a waitlisted applicant get the same consideration as someone who just interviewed, or does the last interview group get first grabs?

Guess, I'll be jumping on all the phone calls at work today. This is going to make for a long day...

Can't answer that Phange, they don't tell us specifics of the Adcom process. We just know that ever app is considered each time.

Well, if calls go out in the next few hours, here's hoping I get one! -crosses fingers-

Good luck to y'all!
