Pacific Northwest University (PNWU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ah! That would make much more sense, but my check in is at 10:30, and we're done by 3, so I'm not sure they'd have something before and/or after this. I suppose we'll see!

There was an 8 am group last year; I interviewed in the 10 am group. So they may be doing the same thing, just with more people.

I was thinking the same thing. Honestly, I don't know.....I just know that she had told me the first group was going to be small, around 30ish interviewees (maybe they have made it larger?! I spoke to her about this about 2 weeks ago). She said that was like a "half size" group, so I just assumed that the other groups were around 60ish. They could very well be larger....in fact, that makes much more sense.

Whoever has the 10/18 interview on here report back-how many interviewees, and if it's still MMI? I'll be there 11/9, so I'll let you guys know how many were on my day, and we can gauge numbers off of those 🙂

I'm interviewing on 10/18 and I'll make sure to get back...in the meantime, anyone have last minute advice?? I'm freaking out a little bit about the MMI... :scared:

(1) During MMI, answer the question completely but don't ramble. If you have nothing more to say, don't try to fill the silence. The interviewers may ask more questions or you may be able to ask them questions. (2) Make sure you know your application.
(3) Be yourself

Best of luck!

Should I apply with my stats? 3.15 cGPA, 3.35 sGPA and 22 (9/4/9) MCAT. OOS URM... I am concerned that 4 in VR will get me an auto-reject...

Crud....I'm going to have to reschedule my 11/9 interview.....hopefully for the 1/11 date. Does anyone here know if they've already filled that date yet? I called and left a message for Hope, and haven't heard back yet.

A few details about the October 18th interview:
30 interviewees. The rest of the interview dates will have two sets of 60 interviewees. Wait-list is ranked in May.
No essay! Instead, we each had 5 minutes to go over our application with somebody. My person had notes on my application to ask me about, etc.
MMI Interview
They make you feel relaxed, and I think one of my interviewers was even more nervous than I was! You have a variety of people interviewing you (volunteers, D.O.s, nurses, etc).
We also got to talk to some students, and they demonstrated an OMT.
The staff at PNWU is fantastic!
Results
Four days after interview (Tuesday, for 10/18) PNWU will sit down and make decisions that day. If they finish on a reasonable time they will call Only acceptances to notify them, otherwise they'll call the next day. If you are waitlisted or rejected you are notified via portal or email.
I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR BACK!!

Downside of this school? Study space. Currently there are ~75 2nd years and ~135 1st years. Next year there will be ~135 1st and ~135 2nd years, and they're already looking for study space this year!

Thank you so much for posting your interview experience. Super helpful!
Wish you the best of luck:luck:

Waitlisted....... 🙁 really was hoping for an acceptance! Any idea on how many people move through the waitlist?? And so does that mean I won't find out if I have an acceptance until May?

Also, I have often heard of people getting deferred acceptances but it seems like those are people that interviewed a lot later in spring. So, are those only handed out til the end and can people on the waitlist be placed on the deferred acceptance later on?

Study space is a pretty minor issue. You always have coffee shops, etc. If you can't find study space, that's more of a personal failing than that of the school.

Aww man... I got waitlisted too. Felt my interview went way well and all-in-all felt interview day went as good as it could have went. Same question. Anyone know how to get off the waitlist? And how soon is possible? And how does PNWU prioritize waitlistees?

Good luck to all of you!

Got the call today! Anyone else? Is there a facebook page yet? 😀

Congrats! There isn't a Facebook page yet for our class.

Hunterthekidd and demosthe: I think they move quite a few people off of the wait list. I don't know if any of the movement occurs before May. Someone else may know more about it. You might also check last years thread.

Just withdrew from PNWU, so there should be a November 9th interview slot available in case anyone wants to switch to an earlier date. 🙂 Best of luck, everyone! :luck:

Are you a student there? How do you feel about the school?

Are you also in the class of 2018?

Accepted! Stats for those who are interested (3.56 gpa, 3.7 sgpa, 28 MCAT) (OOS but did undergrad at WSU).

Advice for people worried about MMI. Be yourself. I stuttered and said "Um" too many times, but I was honest about what I was saying and explained my reasoning. You can't BS your way through MMI interviews, so again be yourself. Good Luck everyone!

I was waitlisted too. Do you fellow waitlisters mind sharing your genera l stats?

GPA 3.3 MCAT 23

Is it too early to ask if you plan to matriculate at PNWU?

Congrate BTW 👍

I'm waiting to hear back from one more school before I make my final decision. PNWU is about an hour from where my family lives so that is a huge factor into why I might chose PNWU. Even if the other school offers me a spot, it will still be a tough decision.

Congrats to you as well!

Don't let geography dominate your decision. Maybe if you have small children or something it might make sense to stay nearby family, but I would caution you that other factors are more important. You should go by the quality of the programs, including the strength of their clinical rotations.

I chose PNWU based primarily on geography and I wouldn't necessarily change my decision if going through the process again. However, if I made a new priority list as an M4 and compared it to what I thought were important factors as a premed, they would be vastly different.

To drive my point home, for residency selection I ranked a program higher that's a six hour flight from Seattle versus a similar program twenty minutes from my house. Location isn't everything.

Could you give some insight on PNWU's program and if you would choose this as an IS applicant over an OOS MD school? I like IS and I like DO, but I'm not necessarily 100% going for primary care. I would be choosing this program based on geography and finances, but also because I like DO (and it's my only acceptance so far so yes, I'm getting ahead of myself, but these are things I'd like to know anyways). Do you feel like you have all of the resources you need for getting into whatever programs after grad (I've heard not good things about their 3rd/4th year clinical options and how they are decided)? Any input you can give would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Specifically, this (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/show...&postcount=979) is what I read. I'm sure you're really busy, but if you have time, would you care to elaborate or update some of these opinions?

Oh man, MD vs. DO? That's a can of worms. I'll say again that geography shouldn't win. All I'll say is that you should go to the most established, well connected program with the best track record of producing quality graduates.

Coming from someone who is also not applying to primary care specialties, it's important to consider what resources exist to help you go in that direction. Some schools will be better positioned to get you into those. Have your heart set on Rad Onc or Plastics? You may want to consider larger things than geography. If you want primary care, by all means go anywhere. I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to match into what/where you want, I'm just saying that your chances might be stifled by the resources afforded to you if you choose a school that's committed to rural primary care.

Thanks for the advice! I will definitely consider it when picking a school.

Interviewing here on the Nov. 9th date! I'm OOS from MN. Thank you everyone who posted interview tips, one can never have enough of those. I will most likely be spending the weekend in the area, so are there any suggestions pertaining to things to do/ see/ eat/ explore...? I've never been to the Yakima area but have been to Seattle a couple of times.

Hey everyone, I just canceled my interview for Nov 9th, so hopefully someone who wants it will get the invite!

Can anyone give a little more detail on the MMI, in terms of how many scenarios we get, and how much time is given to read each and to talk to interview?

Interview Invite, set on January 11th. So what is MMI interviewing?

Seattle = beautiful, Yakima= ugly desert

Cancelled my interview for November 9th. Hope someone can fill in the spot on such short notice! Good luck to you all!

I got accepted too, but I still haven't received my letter, and I live in Spokane. Has anyone else received a letter?

Last year there were 8 scenarios and 1 rest station for a total of 9. I believe it was 3 minutes to read and 5-6 minutes to talk. I have no idea if this has changed. Look up sample MMI questions to get familiar with reading and answering the questions in a short period of time. Also prepare for acting scenarios.

Kp11 - MMI is multiple mini interviews. You are given time to read a prompt and then you enter a room and provide an answer and explanation to an interviewer. When time is up you exit the room and move on to another prompt. Search for MMI examples videos and sample questions.

Best of luck to those of you interviewing on the 9th.

Does somebody want to create the Facebook group? I have never created a group so I'm probably not the best person to do it.

So, are all those scenarios ethical questions and role plays? Or we get typical questions such as why medicine? Or about health care? Or why osteopathy? And what if we don't have anymore to say, and we still have time left? It is going to awkward silence?

Thanks a lot🙂

The questions change, so I can't say if it will include all o the above or just some. I can only attest to my interview last year where I had ethical questions, 1 role play and 1 interview about my app. I would recommend you know your answers to all of those questions you addressed in your post just in case.

As for awkward silence the interviewer may prompt you with additional add on questions or they may see if you have any questions. It depends on your interviewer.

I interviewed this year. We had 5 stations during the MMI part. One station was a self reflection type of question and the other 4 were ethical questions. I didn't have any role plays but that doesn't mean you won't. Don't worry about your time, if you go over it's okay. If you run out things to say that's okay too, my interviewers just asked me other questions. You will also meet with a faculty member for about 5 minutes where they will ask you about your file and why PNWU. Good Luck!

Thank you so much; very helpful.🙂
So, there are only 5 stations. Great. I am very excited and at the same time very nervous for my interview on 9th.

Invite to interview on 1/11, 2.5 weeks after secondary complete date. I'm looking forward to hearing experiences from those going in on the 9th.
