Do programs or PDs find out where you ranked them, other than by default (ie a program ranked you #1 and you did not match there)?

No, and neither do applicants find out where the program ranked them. Generally speaking, although sometimes people violate these rules.

No, but if a program ranks you and you do not match to them, they can find out where you did match. The NRMP makes this information available to them.

For every person we rank, we get a list from NRMP of where they ended up matching. If we don't rank an applicant, we can still look them up via their applicant match history and find out where they went.

There is no way for either applicant or program to know where on a rank list the other is, other than the obvious - for applicants in our matchable range, if we don't get them, we weren't #1!

Well I guess I know where MGH ranked me! I didn't even rank them #1 anyway! I was happy about my match to my #1 and now I this concilliatory and somewhat (what I find) insulting email from MGH. You were so good!....but not good enough....thanks!

Dear Applicant to MGH Internal Medicine Programs,

We were all enormously impressed this year with the large number of very strong applicants going into Internal Medicine, more than we have seen in recent years and something we think speaks well for our specialty. As a result, our top group of applicants was substantially larger this year than in previous years. In addition, for reasons that are unclear to us, we had our best match this year in over a decade. As a result, some people in our top group, who in all of the years in recent memory would have had the opportunity to train here if they chose, did not have that opportunity if they wanted it, even though we know they would have done wonderfully here. As a result, we are also saddened by missing many talented people we were excited about and whom we would very much liked to have matched here if they chose that. The department and the selection committee chairs wanted to be sure that you understood what had happened this year. We certainly wish you the very best in the next stage of your training and hope that you will keep the MGH in mind for further training or career opportunities in the future.

Sincerely,

Interesting. It sounds like MGH didn't have to go far at all down their rank list to match this year.
I'm not surprised - based on the "chatter" on the interview trail this year it seemed liked people had a very positive impression of the place more so than in past years.

I saw our rank list (I am chief resident in a university IM program) and where everyone ended up.

So Ur right I don't know where we were ranked by each applicant. But we do know the final details about the people we ended up with and even the ones we didnt end up with.

I received the same e-mail from MGH. Interesting! I'd received a very nice "will highly rank you" e-mail from the MGH PC PD and am glad to know that they probably did rank me highly -- just not in the top 8! 🙂

One of my friends who got the same email said that MGH probably sends this same email out every year. Somewhat cynical...but maybe true. The whole thing doesn't really bother me, but I just think it's a little arrogant to send that kind of thing out (but they probably don't see it like that).🙂

Back to rank disclosure in general, I have already gotten three surveys from programs seeking to "improve their recruitment process" where they asked me where I ranked them and I why I chose to do so. Actually, I liked all of these programs and would have been very happy matching to them. Location became the key factor in this process for me.

Does anyone know if there is a way we can find out if we were even ranked by the programs that we applied to? Though I got my #1, it would be kind of interesting to see. 😀
