SAVMA Symposium 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Yeah, it's unfortunate but my car died and my cat got sick so the money is tighter and I couldn't justify the expense of going this year.

That makes sense. I feel like we had such a big SDN crew last year and then barely anyone this year!

I'll probably end up going next year depending on location. It would be hella convenient if Pudue, Minnesota, Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin hosted it next year

It’s just so so far from me 🙁
Whole day on a bus both ways with a sad back. Also it’s not during spring break this year?

At least not our spring break. Third year in general can't go because of white coat unfortunately

Yeah it's not during spring break for me either but thankfully is only 4 hours away
And even from my school a lot of people aren't going because third years don't care and the first and second years have midterms the following week

Yeah we have finals the 7-8th so people are having to take them early to go. And then 3rd years have white coat that Sunday so none of them are going, I’d assume.
And it’s a solid 10 or so hour drive WITHOUT any sort of stops from here

We've kicked *** the last few years. We had the second most representation for both years, I believe, and still hella far away. 🤣Granted, when Texas A&M hosted, they done messed up and paid everyone too much to go. I made money off that trip.

Philly is just way cooler than GA! 😛

I would have considered going if I wasn't going to be on the other side of the planet snuggling elephants!

It's 12 hours for us from here. That's something I've been wondering too. It sucks that the last 4 years have been Iowa, Texas, Georgia, and New York. The people out west get no love.

Well, our classes do only have about 85 people in them 😛 But yeah I think we just had a total of maybe 20 last year. I don't even know who else is going this year.

Davis would be the only place big enough to really accommodate it, and who wants to go there? 😛

I think CSU could give a real run for their money, I would think. Granted, it's been a few years since I was there. But WSU and OrSU wouldn't be able to host?

I can't judge. Illinois can't host jack for several years since we are perpetually under construction and under funded.

CSU isn’t West Coast 😛 I was just talking about those schools haha I think CSU would be a fun place for it.

Corvallis might be able to, but Pullman is just way too small and boring to lol

Wouldn't any of the western schools be further away for you guys? lol
It's up to the schools' savma chapters to submit bids I think. Plus they're pretty heavily clustered in the eastern half of the country to begin with, so it kind of makes sense just statistically that's where it would end up.

I said out west, not west coast 😛

I'm thinking just in general. Western, Davis, Midwestern, CSU, WSU, and OrSU all get kinda shafted by the current pattern. At least Iowa was 10 hours or so from CSU. Kansas gets to just be the center of everything. Lol

It makes sense for the schools to be who decides. My pre-vet club put in a bid for APVMA (beat out by UF). But still sucks for students put west.

But like, CO is barely any father West than Texas 😛

Yeah but they would be real convenient for us 😛
Hey man I'll go anywhere, so I don't care, but I think they probably know attendance would drop significantly lower if it was hosted at Davis when over half the schools are on the other side of the country lol

Maybe there should be a...western veterinary student conference

But Texas is sooooooooooooooo south. Lol.

My parents new house in San Antonio is 20 miles close to my current place than the house I grew up in in Denver. Lol

Yeah but I’m sure attendance from those schools is super low when it’s on the East Coast, so it would balance out 😛

Last year for Penn, flights alone would have been like $600 for me I think it was? UGA is like $500. I know our SAVMA helps cover some of the expense, but I think it’s only like $300, so doesn’t even cover the whole flight and then you have hotel, food, etc while there. So cost is going to be really prohibitive for people that aren’t delegates and get a free trip. I want to say only like 10ish people went the last two years from here that I know of.

Low attendance from 6 schools vs low attendance from 20 😉 But no I definitely get it. I think TAMU hosting was probably a bit of a compromise. I don't know if any of the west coast schools have submitted bids, so that's up to them.

Two years ago we were going to bid to host it this year, but it fell through at the last minute so UGA got it by default. 😢

CSU hosted it in 2014. All you young whippersnappers were just not around then. I went that year...I went up early and spent M-Th doing an externship at the clinic I eventually matched to then did Th afternoon-Sunday morning at SAVMA.

Those are both so disappointing because I would have gone to both (though I don't think I could go to the CSU one as a pre-vet.....)

It’s like 9-10 if you don’t make any stops but they always make stops on charter buses

We made it to A&M in 13 hours when I drove. I bet I could've gotten UIUC there in 8 had I driven.

Shaving off FIVE HOURS from a THIRTEEN HOUR DRIVE is not just shaving off a little bit of time :uhno:

We wouldnt stop nearly as much as the bus will. Once every 250 miles, for 5 minutes. You'd be amazed at how much time that saves. And charter busses go the speed limit. Lol. I could realistically get us there within the 9 hour mark.
