Successful Applicant Stats C/O 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Eventualeventer--I'm just curious about how you liked the UM Equestrian Club... It seems kinda crazy with so many people and only like 8 horses. I went to Ag Day a couple times because it was the same day as 4-H public speaking. It's interesting to see the facilities right in the middle of campus...

Anyway, congrats!!!

all prevets at UMD should work with the stalk eyed flies, i think they are good luck!!!

Well, that goes without saying. Stalkies are awesome!

Thanks (and congrats on getting in yourself!). Yeah, it takes a lot of careful scheduling to make things work with so few horses, but there is a lot of oversight and the horses get good care. I think that the Eq. Club is a great thing to have on campus. In terms of my own riding, I mainly benefited from time riding different horses (and lessons from a grad student/professional trainer for the first year or so), but I really enjoyed teaching lessons and helping other people learn about horses, even the little things like how to wrap legs or muck a stall. There were a lot of undergrads who had never touched a horse and probably would not have had the chance to try out riding if there weren't such a cheap, accessible, friendly place to go. I enjoyed my time with the club and met a lot of other horse people, but after a while it became less of a priority because I was getting time in the saddle elsewhere and had less free time from working, etc. IOW, I think it's a real asset to the campus community, but whether an experienced horse person would find it worth their time depends on what they want to get out of it.

Cum GPA: 3.22
Cum GPA after the +/- were deleted: 3.14 :scared:
Last 45: 3.4
GRE: 1250

I only did 3.5 years of undergraduate work and graduated early. I'm working full time currently as a research scientist using my degree in Biomedical Sciences for a company specializing in regenerative medicine.

My interview felt HORRIBLE (I was so nervous!) but apparently I said something they liked!

Vet Experience:
Equine: 4K+ hrs
Small animal: 2K+ hrs
Laboratory: 1K hrs
Farm Animal: 250 hrs

Vet/Animal Experience:
I've owned and shown H/J horses since I was 5 years old, including riding/training with the US Show Jumping Chef d'Equipe and numerous other Olympians.

I've had my own house/pet sitting business since I was 16 and have been bonded/insured since I was 18 when I turned it into an LLC.

6 years of volunteer experience at a disabled riding academy.

5 years of volunteer experience in my local shelter and large animal rescue.

I worked in an Equine Orthopedic Research Lab through college as well as the Veterinary Teaching Hospital's Pharmacy and Oncology departments.

I've worked in several small animal clinics with different specialites in addition to my equine vet clinic since I was 16.

Extracurricular Activities:
I spent two summers in college traveling abroad by myself with no schedule or plan at all except a return ticket 2 months later. I wrote about it in one of my essays and we spent half of my 15 min interview talking about that alone! I think it may have been what set me apart in their minds.

LORs:
Equine Vet I've shadowed for 10 years
Pharmacist I worked for in college (at a veterinary teaching hospital)
Immunology Professor
^They were all so great and really went to bat for me b/c they knew my stats were lower then average. They all stressed that I really had the tools to be successful and was already able to perform many procedures solo but I'm still eager to learn and very teachable. I can't stress how important it is to cultivate really good relationships with potential letter writers enough!

I had a really bad semester (and one not-so-good semester) which is where the very low cum GPA came from. I addressed it in my personal statement and we also talked about it at length in my interview. They really questioned me on what I would do if a similar situation came up in Vet School so I was glad I had thought out a nice answer beforehand. Most of the classes I took those semesters were my pre-reqs for vet school so it was a very big deal.

I never, ever thought I would get in on my first try and I'm still completely shocked and flattered. This year was my 'practice' year because I knew my stats were very bad despite having good experience. Just goes to show that schools DO look at the whole applicant and not just what's on paper!

Didn't have too much vet experience, but had a lot of other work experience as a manager, and a really good GPA...I think both helped compensate for the missing vet experience.

When I applied this year I had NO idea that this was how things would turn out. I thought I would be lucky just to get into my IS school. I was worried about my lack of large animal experience and I just knew how amazing the applicant pool generally was, so when the acceptances started coming in one by one I was beyond ecstatic.

I know my gpa and gre were probably large factors in how well I did, but I also think the fact that I took a year after graduation to work and gain more experience helped alot, as did my interest in ethics.

Notes:
For those out there applying next year, take the GRE early! I had a major GRE meltdown. The first time I took the test I did terrible! I won't even post my scores here it was that bad. They weren't even that outstanding the second time around.

Also, I didn't have a vet that I knew for a long period of time, so I worked hard for a vet as a volunteer and had her write me a letter of recommendation. It ended up working out, so don't get too stressed if you don't have a vet to write you a letter yet.

Most importantly, be yourself throughout the process!

Holy crap Faith! How did schools even reject you? Your GPA is insane and although some of your experience is minimal it is very diverse. Good job and you deserve to go wherever you decide :)

Wow, thanks guys! It means a lot. I honestly didn't know I wanted to be a vet until my freshman year in college. With the economy I had a hard time getting a consistent job without much experience in high school, so I made the best of it and volunteered at a lot of different clinics. I definitely played up the diversity I had in my application. The mixed animal vet I worked for also worked on exotics and I got to work with monkeys and tigers a few times. I also played up my research experience which I think helped me stand out.

From sophomore year I had a goal of applying to UF, A&M and OkSU, but during the application cycle I decided to apply to UPenn and CSU last minute. I really wasted my money applying to UPenn, because it definitely wasn't the right school for me and after applying I realized I didn't really want to go there. CSU would have been nice, but the OOS applicant pool is so competitive that I'm assuming I didn't have enough expereince and didn't stand out to get noticed. It's alright, because UF was my dream school (at least before the tuition change) and I got in! I just wish I could make the money thing work out....

Rigor mortis: High- took classes full-time and worked full-time
I laughed.

Anyhow, congrats! Good luck with your decision. I vote A&M but I may be biased.

Wait, is UF really still accepting people just 11 days before the deadline?!

i think you've confused lyndaely with faith...you quoted lyndaely but then mentioned the decision between UF and A&M which is Faith. ;)

Hmm...sure did. Well apologies to the respective parties. Guess I should only read one posting at a time lol, I seem to overload the 'Sorting' department after that.

Wanted to bump this thread up. . . Congrats to all that have seats for c/o 2014!! . . .where are the stats for those of us applying next year:) Thanks in advance!

When I got my first acceptance, I was so excited that I posted on this thread right away. Now that I've heard back from all the schools, I was wondering how I should edit to reflect that (I wouldn't bother, but when I was looking at last years stats when I was applying, seeing where people with different strengths were accepted was very useful). Should I repost the whole thing, or is it ok if I just go back and edit my first post? I'm trying to avoid confusing anyone...

just post again and at the top/where the title is...say something about hearing from all of your schools or something?

Equine: none
Small animal: 1500 hrs
Laboratory: 200 hrs
Farm Animal: none

Vet/Animal Experience:
I've worked at 2 hospitals so far, doing solely small animal. I tried to find some large animal experience, but this area just isn't well-represented when it comes to LA vets.

I've got something like 50 hours of volunteer experience at a local no-kill shelter, however I eventually stopped that because I really don't agree with the way they run it.

Extracurricular Activities:

Nothing special. I was a member of Phi Alpha Theta History Honorary for 2 years, of which one of those I served as Treasurer. We set up and ran 4 days of presentations on the issue of Darfur.

LORs:
- SA vet who got me my first job
- My organic chemistry professor, who's just about the coolest guy you could ever meet.
- The owner of the animal hospital I work at now

- My organic chemistry professor, who's just about the coolest guy you could ever meet.

Must be something about the Ochem prof crowd. Mine was pretty awesome too.

I think chemistry professors, organic ones in particular, run in extremes. Either they are absolutely great, or absolutely horrible.

Yay PrimalMU!!! I'm so excited to be going to school with you!! I am in Starkville right now actually. As soon as I found out, my parents and I came down here to look at houses. I'm oh so excited. It's gonna be so nice yay!

Nice! You live quite a bit closer than I do, haha. I'm gonna be heading down there in 2 weeks or so to try to find an apartment. If you come across any good deals let me know!

Yeah it took me just over 4 hours to get here. I can't help you with apartments though :( I've only been looking at houses! I'm sure there are some good ones

any new off-the-waitlisters want to share their stats? :)

Vet Experience:
-Equine: 20 hours
-Small animal: 320 hrs
-Research/ Lab Animal: 1800 hrs
-Farm Animal: none

Vet/Animal Experience:
I've volunteered at 2 clinics, and observed at 2 others. I had a TON of research hours (corneal research which ties into the fact that I want to specialize in ophthalmology) which COUNTED as veterinary experience since it was done under the observation of a PhD…and involved the use of laboratory animals of course.

Extracurricular Activities:

- Supplemental Instructor for BIO I course
-Cell biology tutor
-Worked all through college at Abercrombie and Fitch
-Musician for years (overlapped into college by about a year)
Honors/Awards:
-Dean's List once
-Departmental Honors in Biology
-National Honors Society

LORs:
- SA vet from the first clinic that I volunteered at
- My research mentor whom I worked for for about 3 years
- Another SA vet that I worked for for about 6 months
-Endocrinology/ Medical Biochemisty professor
-Lecturer that I SI'd for for BIO I

The only reason that I'm posting this is because I want to give some people hope!!!! I'm pretty self conscious about things like my lack of clinical experience and GRE/GPAs. Hopefully this lets someone know that you should never throw in the towel. I always took the difficult courses (many graduate courses as an undergrad) and took the hard route. I don't know if that helped me, but it didn't hurt! I also think that the fact that I am male played a small roll in how I was so successful in the application cycle. I also have a pretty colorful back story that my interviewers all loved hearing about. At Iowa, they kept me for about 5 minutes over to hear about my adventures as a musician. My college career was also very linear. My first year GPA was a 2.4 as an undecided major taking just Gen Ed's. There it is! I'm personally shocked that I got in, and I know that some regulars will be too, but I've learned that things are rarely as bleak as you may think.
