So the question has been asked a few years ago, but does anyone have a more recent analyis/opinion on the two? Starting this year, the tuition deposit at drexel is NOT REFUNDABLE if you withdraw prior to May 15th (as recommended by AAMC. See #7 here) So I suppose I will have to make the decision before sending drexel a check... Thanks everyone!

Didn't you interview at both? That should give you a better idea of which one. The decision is really yours. Personally, I would choose Temple.

If not, then I'd go ahead and "commit" if you have to. Worst case, you'll lose some money, but that'll be chump change in the long run.

Have you been offered acceptances to both schools? Deciding on which to pick is a very personal decision. Based only on what I've heard, overwhelmingly Temple > Drexel. Take that with a grain of salt though -- I've interviewed at Temple but not Drexel. For you specifically, it will come down to what you value in a school.

That's annoying. How long do they give you to send in the deposit?

Temple... but regardless, it's a hundred dollars. Passing up an interview because the flights and hotel will cost $800 and your chances are only 30% is one thing, but passing up an extra five months to decide where you'll spend the next four years of your life just to save $100 is nuts.

I agree.

Just to offer a differing opinion: I'm more of a fan of Drexel because 1) it's in a quieter/safer location and 2) I think it has a much better curriculum. Walking around the Temple area makes me fear for my life.

That's one of the few draws I'm considering about Temple, but at my interview I made sure to ask several female students if they felt safe walking around campus. Without fail, they all said they had their doubts before matriculating, but now as students they feel completely safe. The campus is very well lit at night, almost like it is bright daylight!

I think you're just as likely to get mugged outside the Queen Lane SEPTA station as you are by the Temple stop. Just my personal experience, though.

heard great things about temple, haven't heard much about drexel

haha I can't disagree with you on that. Almost everything I've heard about either school's safety levels is hearsay in one way or another... but besides that, I do have a few friends who have attended Temple and been mugged or attacked. Philly in general is a trashpiece but whatcha gonna do :d

How about Penn State? Jefferson? How do they compare to Drexel and Temple?

I interviewed at both back to back. I went into the interviews sure that I would love Drexel, but it turned out quite the opposite. I loved Temple's new building and block scheduling. It is clear that the students really love it there. I was turned off by Drexel's large class size, the two curricula (which I thought would be awesome), and the location of the hospital vs. the med school campus. I left the Temple interview really pleasantly surprised. Just my thoughts, hope it helps.

Honestly, both locations are terrible so don't let that be too huge of a selection criteria.

As far as which is "better", Temple has the more recognizable name if that's important to you. However, both schools will take you where you want to go. For example, colleague at Drexel just matched into UCLA neurosurg. So, in summary, go with your gut. Choose the place that will give you the peace of mind to achieve a great board score.

7. Each school's acceptance deposit not exceed $100 and (except for EDP applicants) be refundable until May 15, April 30 for M.D.-Ph.D. applicants. If the applicant enrolls at the school, the school is encouraged to credit the deposit toward tuition.

The AAMCrecommends that the deposit be refundable, but Drexel doesn't follow that recommendation and their deposit is not refundable.

I vote for Temple. Temple University Hospital is right on campus. Drexel campus is away from its hospital. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Drexel has its own hospital either. Instead, it is affiliated with Hahnemann University Hospital as well as some others.

How about Penn State? Jefferson? How do they compare to Drexel and Temple?

Location wise, Jefferson is definitely the best. It's right in the middle of Center City. Drexel and Temple's locations are quite ghetto. Penn State is pretty rural, so for someone who doesn't like the city, this might be a good location.

I think education wise, Penn State and Jefferson are about the same. I'd rate them slightly higher than Temple and much higher than Drexel.

Location wise, I think Drexel > Temple but everything else, Temple > Drexel. Being in the area, I know for a fact that Temple's location is absolutely horrendous. Crimes and gunshots are the norm.

Much higher than Drexel? Im pretty certain that Drexel students score great on the boards and match really well, so saying that Drexel education is sub-par is in my opinion completely incorrect.

Personally, I would vote Jefferson > Temple > PSU = Drexel. Jefferson is in the best location right in center city, and the students all love it there. It has a very good reputation in the Philadelphia area! Temple is also on its way up, and they are just starting to push for more research (as reported by a Temple-affiliated doc to me). I don't know too much about PSU, but it's basically in the middle of nowhere. Also, PSU and Drexel have horrible grading schemes for the preclinical years (H/HP/P/LP/F). What's nice about Drexel is that it has two curriculums to choose from, but Hahnemann is not close to the Queen Lane campus and shuttles can be annoying.

I've visited all of these schools besides PSU, and I'm very familiar with Drexel and Temple because I have close friends that are M1s at both. You'll get a great education at any of these schools, so you should ultimately choose the one that's the best "fit."

I interviewed and was accepted to both schools. I liked Temple MUCH more (obvious since I chose it, LOL). To be brief, I don't think there was a single thing about Drexel that I liked more than Temple.

Just to offer a differing opinion: I'm more of a fan of Drexel because 1) it's in a quieter/safer location and 2) I think it has a much better curriculum. Walking around the Temple area makes me fear for my life.
We're in the hood, no doubt. I was MUCH more afraid of the area before I started here. The immediate area is patrolled by Temple cops and well-lit. The parking lot is pretty much around the corner from campus and I never have to venture beyond that. The area just north of Drexel isn't much better than the area around Temple. I forget if Drexel does block scheduling, but I LOVE it at Temple.

This is absolutely true for me as well, as I mentioned above.

Pretty much.

Temple main campus or the HSC? I've heard more stories from main campus. The area's a little worse there, IMO (not to say the area around HSC is much better) and since there are so many more students there it stands to reason there'd be more incidents. Point is, I've never felt unsafe on campus. I know some people that are renting a house a few blocks away have had a break-in, but I wouldn't recommend renting in the area, though I'm sure it's very convenient. I would recommend center city or manayunk, where most of my classmates live. I personally live in Montgomery County, but I'm a non-trad and have a husband and two kids. It's an easy (though sometimes congested) drive for me pretty much straight down 611).

How about Penn State? Jefferson? How do they compare to Drexel and Temple?

Location-wise, Jefferson is the best. There's no arguing it. It's in a nice part of Center City. I interviewed there but did not apply to Penn State (I only applied to the schools in Philly). Jefferson was my first choice going into this process and I LIKED it when I interviewed but I didn't love it. I kinda choked at my adcom interview, too, and wound up on the WL (I ultimately made no attempt to get off it and eventually withdrew). I honestly don't remember a great deal about their curriculum or anything, but I just felt like Temple was home. YMMV there, obviously.

Temple Hospital is right across the street from MERB (which is an awesome building, BTW), but you may end up sent elsewhere, even if you're accepted to main campus. You could be sent to Abington Memorial or Crozer Chester or a few other hospitals. I believe Abington Memorial is Drexel's primary rotation spot nowadays (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I actually hope to do most of my rotations there since it's really close to where I live.

Really, I think this is the most important thing when you get down to it. You don't want to be miserable. Well, you'll still be miserable sometimes, but you at least want to like the people you're miserable with.

What, in your expert pre-medical opinion, makes Drexel that much lower in education quality than anywhere else?

I'm very interested in hearing this expert pre-medical opinion as well. Last time I checked, the education at every medical school in the US is virtually the same (that's how they get accredited in the first place).

This x 1000000 🙂. I feel like the most underrated reason for choosing a med school (especially on SDN) is fit and comfort level. Be happy with where you go... 4 years is a long time and you're dropping a lot of money. Anyway, your patient isn't going to give a damn if you went to Temple or Drexel, just as long as you're a good doctor and know what you're doing.

it was just my opinion being from the area and having friends that go to both schools. im sure drexel is a great school but if you ask for my opinion, i would say temple is better than drexel. you dont have to agree with me, it was just my thoughts. never said i was an expert or anything.

also, when i said drexel was much lower, i meant it in terms of jeff > temple > drexel ie jeff is better than temple which is better than drexel. not in terms of drexel being horrible.

I've been to MERB a few times. It is very nice, and it's definitely one of the things Temple tries to sell. Even though Temple will send students out to affiliates during 3rd and 4th years, it's still more convenient to have a university hospital right across the street during 1st and 2nd years in case you want (or required to by a course) to shadow doctors.

But yes, I agree with go where you'd be happiest, OP. Students at both schools succeed and become doctors. You won't be at a disadvantage at either school.

agreed. students from either school will be successful. go with where you feel you would be happiest.

Good point, and we ARE required to shadow our preceptors for doctoring. I didn't even think about it because I've been in her office both times. I like my preceptor a lot, but I know there's a doctor that has privileges at the hospital near me and I was originally disappointed I wasn't paired with them.

I don't remember much about 3rd and 4th year from my interview, but how common is it for students who are assigned to Temple's main campus to do rotations not at the main hospital? are the other hospitals far enough that you'd need a sublet during the rotations more nearby?

As a Temple med grad, (and former Drexel/Hahnemann resident) I vote Temple. Of course it's been a while. The new medical school was still the student parking lot when I graduated.

With one exception, I think the farthest a main campus student can be sent is Crozer Chester to the SW (about 15 miles from Center City) or Abington Memorial to the north (about 8 miles from the school, straight up 611). The exception being your Family Medicine rotation, which you can be set pretty far away for. I don't know how common it is for that to happen. I actually didn't really know about it until a classmate of mine pointed it out in the TUSM thread on this forum the other day. I have two kids and I believe I was told that exempts me from the lottery system and I just get to pick where I go, so I wasn't too concerned about it.

This obviously doesn't include an away rotation you want to do.
