I was just recently accepted to Temple Med, and now I am torn between RWJ and Temple. I am a NJ resident, so RWJ is going to be much cheaper for me. But the two programs are very different, and Temple is also going to be opening up their new med school building this fall. Any thoughts?? I have to decide soon, so any input would be greatly appreciated!

im not sure at all...theyre just so different. im just wondering how their md programs stack up. it seems that both have a great student body and that both are solid programs. but the environments are completely different

UMDNJ (instate) = 22k/yr
Temple (out of state) = 49k/yr

The difference between these two schools is about 150k after four years of tuition plus 4 years of interest during residency and 10 years of interest during repayment.

I think this is a pretty clear cut decision?

This one can be solved by answering one simple question:

"Do you appreciate being shot at while walking to/from class?"

If the answer is "yes" then go to Temple.
If the answer is "no" then go to RWJ.

I agree with majahops, during second look they told us that is common for Temple students to get shot going to/from class, but this is mostly due to the trauma residents wanting extra practice. Otherwise, they do get most of the anatomy lab cadavers from current medical students.. It's really a win , win for them.

Uhh, you are equally likely to get shot if you end up in Camden for your 3rd/4th year clinicals at RWJ.

So apparently no matter what decision you make you are going to be shot! Do you want to be shot with less debt or do you want to be shot outside a brand new building. Tough decision.

I want to be shot in front of a brand new building. Awesome.👍

A new pretty building shouldnt be a deciding factor on where you end up going.

Leave the aesthetics out of it and look at the actual quality of the program, not the paint job.

buhahahaha thats hilarious lol

Full disclosure: I'm on the waiting list for Temple and the one school I got in has similar cost so I'd definitely consider Temple if they accept me.

I grew up spoiled and rich in Manhattan Beach, my parents are paying tuition/living and I have a trust fund with an annual dole that would easily cover me even if they didn't. I still wouldn't even consider Temple if it cost 150k more.

Now if Temple's giving you a scholarship, then you'd have a harder decision. But, I don't know how the May 15th deadline works if you're accepted to several schools but haven't recieved the fin aid letter yet.

Are your parents looking for another kid?

you out to be out of your mind to pay 150k more for TEMPLE med.

The only school I would pay 150K more for is Harvard law school vs. Brooklyn Law school.

I actually ran into a Temple 4th year on the subway yesterday. She basically said she and everyone she knew loved Temple. The first two years everyone likes the block schedule because you only have to worry about one subject for each exam and teachers made it really clear what they want students to know. She also said she had some personal issues and needed to take some time off before third year and the administration was totally cool about it. Also, she said she feels like she gets much better clinical experience than most of her friends at other schools because of Temple Hospital's Area.

My conversation with her made my decision much easier to pick Temple. I can't describe to you how enthusiastic she was.

At every med school you are going to find people who are "enthusiastic" about their school. Almost everyone is happy at their med school because this process is hell and getting in is so hard. Not to mention i feel some people want to validate their schools, espeically when they got accepted to the typicaly safety schools that no one really wants to go to. They only go to them becuase they had no choice (SUNYbuffalo, RF, GW, etc..)

...so first you spend two years studying your tuchus off and getting in an impressive debt, and then you get shot 😀

But the good news is that you don't have to pay back the debt after you get shot. Your body is donated to the anatomy lab and the lender forgives your debt. So it is all good.

Agreed, Temple is not worth the extra 150K.

The only school that's worth the extra 150k is the one that you will be happy in.. If you think you can be relatively equally happy at both schools save the extra cash, thats an Audi R8 right there.

money doesn't grow on trees. interest however, grows everywhere.

use your head.

brooklyn law is actually a decent school and I know a few people with upper 170s on their LSATs going there. its not THAT bad. I love temple but its not worth 150k, RWJ is great. I know both of them decently well, know people at both. People are enjoying things everywhere (I'm lying, the girls I know at RWJ seem to be crying a lot, idk why they are P/F and temple has grades). One is in a pretty huge city and other is in a pretty huge... undergrad school.

to me, nothing in life is worth the 150k+ that you actually don't have but predict to have over the course of your life.

Temple is definitely on the Honors/High Pass/Pass/Conditional Fail system. Someone gave you false information.

There's no such thing as a typical safety school because everyone's list of safety schools has to be tailored to their individual strengths and weaknesses. Maybe this has been your unique experience but I find that the people who are happy here versus the people who had no choice are pretty honest about their opinions and don't feel the need to lie. Most of my classmates definitely had other choices but they decided to come here for a variety of reasons (I'm assuming the 8am to 12pm schedule was a huge draw!). I personally loved GW regardless of people labeling it as a "safety school"...whatever that means. It was my number one choice (their simulation center was amazing...DC is amazing...they provide a solid education, etc) but I have to admit their daily schedule made me cringe. I would hope that it doesn't take an Ivy League education to make people feel good about themselves :scared:

I think there is something to be said about people who are enthusiastic about their school. Last year during interviews, I went to a couple schools where the students were so nonchalant about their experiences there. I immediately went home and crossed those places off of my list. I know a (very small) handful of people who are not thrilled with Temple but I have to agree that the majority of people here range from like it to love it.

This is true. But while at Temple I heard an interesting fact. About 1/3rd of the M-1 class at Temple applied to be tour guides. So atleast 1/3rd of students must have been excited enough about their school to take time out of their obviously busy schedules to show us their school.. all for only a free lunch up to $8. Then you have to figure that there are plenty of students who are enthusiastic about the school but just didn't have the time.

I think this kind of quantitative information is very telling about the atmosphere at Temple. Definitely more telling than one uppity tour guide anyway. And OP, don't go to Temple. No way.
