Hello all,

I am currently a Junior in college, Pre-med of course, and I was wondering how some UVA Medical students feel about the new curriculum. Also how do you feel about the surrounding area/cost of living?

Can't speak about new curriculum (my class was an older curriculum, and our Step I average was a 236, so something was working).

Good area. Lots of outdoors stuff. Lots of wineries. Pretty good restaurants. College town feel, especially next to campus. Downtown and downtown mall have an older feel when you want to get away from the obnoxious undergrads (no offense).

Good cost of living. Lived walking distance in 2 bdrm basement apt with $520 rent.

You need a car, especially during third year.

It's all good, I feel that a lot, if not most, of the Undergrads are obnoxious also. Can you tell me anything about the student body and the Faculty/Administration?

This is discussed extensively in the application thread for this year.

Is there something specific you wanted to know? I was a part of the first class, and it definitely had its rough moments, but most all those have been smoothed out now. I'm loving the fact that, credit wise, I'm over halfway through my fourth year now, thanks to starting so early due to the new curriculum.

Cost of living is reasonable--how you feel about it depends on where you're coming from. There's definitely a ton of stuff to do outdoors, if that's your thing.

I kinda wanted to know what the new curriculum is like. All that I have heard thus far is that it is different and that there is not really a distinct class for the different areas. Just more information a suppose.

Student body generally down to earth. Always have the too cool for school kids, but everywhere probably has that. Not the most diverse culturally (according to some). I thought it was fine culturally though.

Administration and financial aid are superb. I'm a PGY-3 and the admin still bends over backwards to help me if I need it.

It's systems-based, so you don't have 'biochem', 'physiology', and 'pathology' classes, you have the Hematology system, and learn all that's relevant to the Hematology system in that block.

Exams are online, and can be taken anytime between Friday at noon and Sunday at noon. Formative exams (quizzes) are generally halfway through the system, or every 2 weeks, with a summative exam (exams) every 4 weeks, or at the conclusion of the system (for systems shorter than 4 weeks).

Class is from 8 til 12 M-F, you have one afternoon per week of CPD, which is your 'how to be a doctor' class, and one semester of your first year, you also do some sort of community service project one afternoon a week (on average). There's a fair amount of small group sessions in various formats--TBLs are when you study the material before class, take a test on your own at the start of class, then take the same test together in a group of 6, then do a bunch of cases in your group of 6 and argue the answers with the whole class. There are various other small group sessions, including anatomy lab, some journal club type sessions, etc. There are still some straight didactic sessions, which are not required and are podcasted.

Venus,

That straightens up my thoughts on it a lot. Do you know if UVA is pass/fail? I haven't found any information on that in my searches. The 8-12 really does not seem terrible, although this may be typical for Medical schools, I don't know.

Dral,

That sounds really good. Good Administration is always good.

Strictly P/F first two years and fourth year. Third year is typical A/A-/B+/B system.
