Hi, I am an out of state applicant. I have an interview at Baylor this Friday. I was just wanting to know what the interview process is like. Hoping to get some answers from those who have already interviewed.. If not, anything will help.
All I know is that I think out of states have the best chance at Texas A&M CoD than the other two and that the out of states that the school does choose are usually states without a dental school or are border states i.e. Alaska, Arkansas,

Second interview!

School: Houston
Notification date: 10/11
Interview/Acceptance/Rejection date: 10/31
Method of notification: email
TMDSAS submitted: 6/30
Application transmitted: 8/8
GPA (Science, Overall): 3.86, 3.84
DAT (AA/TS/PAT/Reading/any section below a 17): 21, 21, 23, 25, none

San Antonio interview was pretty relaxed for anyone wondering.
What kind of questions did SA ask? Anything you'd recommend to prep for it?

There should be a list of common interview question on SA's website. But the interview at SA is very relaxing, they really want to get to know who you are as a individual.

Questions were pretty standard. Here are a few that I was asked.

Tell me about yourself.
Why do you want to be a dentist?
Tell me about a time you overcame a challenge.
What is one of your defining characteristics?
What makes you a better dental student than the other applicants?
What is one thing you want me to remember about you after this interview?

The interview went by very quickly and was more of a conversation. The interview with the dental student afterwards was even more relaxed.

For anyone wondering about Houston's interview, it was very similar to SA. The interviewer asked more questions, but they were along the same lines. I actually ran over time with my interviewer at Houston. No interview with a dental student, though. Make sure you have some questions ready for them!

Anyone know how strict it is to send in new transcripts after each semester to TMDSAS?

I would also like more information on this. I think you would just send it in as soon as grades are finalized

Just looked over at TMDSAS and there's not much to it. Just request a transcript when the semester is finished.

Thanks. I wish it were just at the end of the year so we don't have to request 2 transcripts -_-

From what I understand it is just one set of transcripts at the end of Decemeber. At the end of spring semester the cycle is basically over with so there'd be really no point.

It's relaxed, three faculty interview you! Schedule depends if you're morning or afternoon (8:30 is morning and 10ish is afternoon), basically morning has interviews then once afternoon come in you go to lunch together and then take tour together then afternoon has their interviews and morning group leaves.

Hello, I have a bit of a situation that I am trying to figure out. I applied to the Texas programs this summer (am a TX resident), and I have only heard back from UTHSCSA. I am starting to wonder why Houston and A&M have yet to get back to me so I recently went over my application.

When I originally filled out my application, I had filled out all of my shadowing hours and community service hours, forwarding myself hours that I would gain before matriculation. Shortly before I submitted my application, I was told that the hours should represent what we have already accomplished, and we shouldn't be forwarding hours before matriculation. Therefore, I went back to my application and fixed everything... or so I thought.

It turns out that under my shadowing hours, I guess I had not corrected one of the dentists that I had been shadowing, and instead of displaying the 50 hours that I had shadowed, it displayed the 125 hours that I was expecting to gain before matriculation. Everything else in my application was fixed correctly, and displays what I have already accomplished. Should I be concerned with this or am I just getting in my head way too much? Also this same dentist was one of my letters of recommendation. Is it common for a letter of recommendation to include all the hours that you have shadowed/spent in their office? Please let me know what you think!

My GPA is a 3.76o and 3.65bcp, I have a 21 AA, 21 TS, and a 22 PAT. I have never used SDN before and was directed here by a few friends who are regulars, so please forgive me if I have misused something.

In my opinion, I don't think the letter includes the hours but it's all up to the dentist. If you heard back from UTHSCSA I would think there is nothing wrong with it otherwise you wouldn't have heard back from them!

Talked to a few people who write rec letters and I don't think they record how many hours that each individual shadows in their office. I think if your LoR recorded the hours, the schools would have at least gotten back to you asking for an explanation on why there is a discrepancy, think you shouldn't worry, there have been a bunch of people on this forum that have only heard from one school with stats similar to yours (including myself)

Rip.. I guess the Texas schools has ended their pre-december interviews. Time to cry in a corner.

Congrats!!! What date is it scheduled for?

New here, but I've been following the posts and I'm concerned that I won't get an interview at any of the Texas schools. Here are my stats:

sGPA: 3.33
oGPA 3.65
DAT (AA/TS/PAT/Reading/any section below a 17): 23/23/22/27/no

I feel like those are somewhat competitive and I'm a Texas resident, but again, haven't heard back from any schools. I only decided to go to dental school this last December, and between getting ready for the DAT, full-time school, part-time work and getting my application submitted, I was only able to have 20 shadowing hours, 3 clinical volunteer hours, and 17 non-healthcare volunteer hours. I also have 3 W's on my transcript, so that might be why. I've been going and shadowing about 8 hours a week for the last few weeks in case I have to reapply. But I have 3 questions:

1. Are there people out there getting interviews that don't have many shadowing hours, etc.? (mostly to know if I should keep hoping or give up on this cycle)
2. The people who have gotten interviews, how many shadowing hours, etc. did you have?
3. Is there anything I can do at this point to get an interview this cycle?

Thanks!

SpuranSpuran,

Great GPA and DAT, but I think you may be lacking in the community service and health care related activities. You may get an interview though, but who really knows for sure...

When did you receive the Ws?
Are you a traditional student?
Just continue what you are doing and gain as much experience in the field.
If you have to apply next year then that will show you really want to go into dentistry.
What kind of job do you have?
Any leadership experience?

I would think that the schools want to make sure you are committed to dentistry and service to others.

I got the W's my sophomore year of college. I'm a traditional student and I'm a waiter. I have some leadership experience, but I definitely need to work on clinical experience. I'm planning on getting as much shadowing as I can manage between now and the end of the semester and sending emails to the schools saying what I've done since submitting my application, assuming I haven't received interviews by then. We'll see how it goes!

What is the day of your interview?

Forgot to ask when did you submit your application? And when was it complete?

It doesn’t hurt to email the admissions advisors at the schools and ask questions. This will show you are very interested and maybe you can add that you’ve been shadowing and volunteering more.

I submitted August 17 and it was complete when I submitted it, but it wasn't processed until September 25.

Okay, well that's a little later in the cycle. Here are some stats from TMDSAS: "The 50% of applicants that submitted their application by August received 75% of the interviews offered to the EY2017 class. Only 25% of applicants who submitted after August 1 were interviewed."

I would give it until the end of Dec, but l would still reach out to the admissions advisors or even call and ask questions. Good luck!!!

Good luck y'all! hang in there!👍👍

Is it correct that the schools only fill half of the spots on the 1st?

Houston only sends out 50 acceptances on December first. A&M and SA send enough to fill up their class on the first.
Interesting. I guess SA may be a bust for me as I never did get an interview from them

soo... us post Dec interviews are just back up? Sad face...

Anyways, good luck everyone!!!

No no. Not everyone accepts the offer on December first. Like if someone gets into all 3 schools they can only choose one, which frees up space at the other schools. Post Dec interviews aren’t the end of the world.

interesting, I have an interview with Houston on the 12th. Would I be able to hear back before the deadline for deposit on oos schools I am accepted too? Hearing back before jan 1st seems unlikely
During my cycle I was in the second round of acceptances it came out January 11th for UTSD so you will probably have to put down a deposit elsewhere assuming they give you 30 days to do so.
