Touro University - Nevada (TUNCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You can rent a car for cheaper, I rented an SUV for 20 bucks total from the airport for my interview. Renting a car is the way to go.

Wow, who did you rent it through? I know Hertz charges like $40/day for their compact cars.

if you're over 25... lol

Sign up for a free USAA account -- doesn't matter if you're in the military or not. You get a code that waives the "under 25" charge for Hertz.

USAA rocks, whenever car insurance people try to sell me their insurance I just tell them, "I already have insurance, thanks though." "Oh but I can get you this, and this, and this!" "My insurance is USAA." Their face falls and they just mutter, "oh, ok." Haha they know they can't compete with the price and coverage.

If anyone has an October 9th or October 21st interview date and is willing to trade for November 6th--I'd be very appreciative!

Looking to interview earlier to accommodate school schedules.

I just canceled a 10/21 interview if someone wants to move up. Good luck!

Do any of the recommended hotels in the interview email provide transportation to/from the airport? I'd hate to rent a car for a 15 mile drive each way.
I was told that the Hilton Garden Inn Las Vegas/Henderson (1340 West Warm Springs Road | Henderson | NV) was recommended. When I was booking the hotel the lady told me that they provide a shuttle to/from the airport and to/from Touro. All you have to do is schedule it. Also, she said that the shuttle to/from the airport are on odd hours and to Touro are on even hours. Just a heads up if you decide to skip out on the rental.

Was able to move up my interview to October 8th in the evening--next week!

Very excited!

Touro-NV is a strong top choice for me so I am eager to see this school!

Does anyone know if Touro-NV screens for their secodary? They are the only school I haven't received a secondary from (I just realized this....I've been complete at ALL the other schools for close to 3 weeks now!). I'm wondering if maybe they screen for MCAT subsections (I have a 6PS/10VR/9BS), or if I should just call and ask?! Maybe my application got lost in the shuffle?

Yeah, booked my flight and hotel--and was going to book a car rental but it's almost as expensive as flight.

Might just end up doing a shuttle--which is unfortunately cause I want to travel and explore the area. $50 bucks a day for being under 25 (I'm 24).

Yes they do screen for secondaries (at least 3.0 cumulative and science GPA and at least 25 on MCAT). September is a big holiday month for the Touro schools so depending on when your application was released to them you may have to expect some delay in processing. But it never hurts to call and check if your documents have all been received. Good luck!

I've read on various threads that if you sign up for a free USAA account online, you can have the "under 25 fee" waived. I haven't tried it personally, but it's worth a try.

Hey guys I just withdrew my II for Oct 21st, good luck to the rest of you =]

Got my interview appointment switched from Nov 18 to Oct 21. I'm so happy.

Good luck to you all!

Question for students: Is a car a necessity on campus?
Our campus is one big building so a car isn't needed if you live walking distance. There is an apartment complex (Remington I believe) that's is a quick walk (less than 5 minutes), but it is hot in Vegas so I wouldn't want to be too far away.

I'm not landing until 8-9pm local time on Tuesday and flying out immediately after the interview on Wednesday 🙁 Hate spending money on a rental when I have it less than 24 hours 😡

I'm interviewing on Oct 9th? Though I'm doing the afternoon 12 - 6 PM interview.
I had to do the morning interview so I can take a very late flight back home in order to get to work the next day 🙁

My AACOMAS application was sent off to the 20 schools that I applied to on Sept. 12 and within a week or so I had received 19 supplementary applications, but I never heard anything from Touro Nevada which is definitely one of my top choices. I have a 3.47 cGPA, 3.50 sGPA, and a 30 MCAT (10 PS, 11 VR, 9 BS). Any idea why I wouldn't have received a supplementary application? Is there anything I can do to get them to send me one?

Withdrawing my application! Hoping my interview spot will go to one of you! Good Luck!!!

I ended up booking at the Wingate, they have complimentary shuttle service and the TUNCOM rate is $69.99 a night. Not bad.

Posted this incorrectly in the CA thread

It starts at 8 with introductions and briefs and all of that and then around 10 you do the standard split into two groups with one going on the tour and the other staying for interviews. After all of that there is a brief financial aid presentation, lunch, and a very useful Q and A session with current medical students.

That's how it went for my morning interview anyway. All in all, it was a good day, I really liked the overall atmosphere and the students. Still waiting to hear back of course...I've just about put my deposit down on AZCOM after cancelling some other interviews, but I've been delving into TUNCOM information a bit more lately and it's making me a little more undecided as to which school I would rather attend. I don't think there is any doubt the pre-clinical years are great quality.

I have a hard time finding feedback from students on the clinical years here though. It seems like they could be pretty solid, I really like the idea of having Las Vegas and surrounding areas dedicated to mostly TUNCOM students. But if there are any 3rd or 4th years (or recently graduated) lurking around, it would sure be appreciated if you could throw some info our way.

If you're looking to specialize, I think AZCOM would be the better school. Their match list has a lot more specialty matches, and AZCOM has some of the best board scores and board passage rates of any DO school.

Yeah those are actually some of the main reasons I am more or less decided on AZCOM, they don't have just high pass rates but also high averages. I hear quite a few grumblings about their clinical years, yet they consistently match a lot of specialties, even at places like John Hopkins and Mayo. They certainly get results so they must be doing something right! I guess I'm just being thorough in my decison, thanks for the input.

Having said that, Nevada seems to have some pretty solid numbers as well and their match list has more and more specialties every year.

Anyone else interviewing tomorrow morning? Unfortunately, I'm only spending a grand total of 20 hours in Las Vegas (including interview) so this is a very quick turnaround. Won't get to see much of the city, at all.

Ate some horrible pizza that was delivered to the hotel. Ugh. 👎 Stay away from Mama DePalmas Pizza.

I'll be tomorrow evening.

My hotel recommended some Pizza Place but after looking it up---it had horrible reviews. Wonder if they get kickbacks?

From my experience driving around--the area around the school is awesome.

Went to Chipotle for lunch and got Dunkin Donuts for dinner.

Good luck tomorrow Back5.

Yeah, it's a tough choice -- both are good schools and truth be told, I'd rather live in Vegas/Henderson than Phoenix/Glendale.

Very laid back and chill interview day. Best of luck to the afternoon group! We were sworn to secrecy when we would find out the results.

Interview was great--school was awesome.

Enjoyed meeting some of yall.

Now I am just stuck in a hotel till tomorrow--if anyone wants to grab dinner tonight--do PM me.

Cheers!

If anyone is going cancel an earlier interview in October, please let me know so I can move up my interview! Thanks a bunch

My app was released on 9/20 but I still haven't received a secondary. I left a message for them regarding this since no one ever answers. Is this normal or should I be doing something different?

You applied kinda late. I think right now, for a lot of schools, they are putting their efforts on the people they have interviewed. I think they are going through them first, and then go back and look at applications.

They always returned my calls, they must be super busy. 😕

if we get an ii right now, we would be scheduling it in December 🙁

Lame. I can't even finish my application until they send me the secondary. And I thought that was an automated process.

If it makes you feel any better, my app was released 9/6, and I have yet to receive a secondary! I did call them last week, and they said they had my primary, but they were backed up because there were a TON of holidays in September, and most that were verified in Sept hadn't been processed. Hopefully secondaries will be sent out soon! Even so....I'm not sure it'll be worth it, as it's so late in the process now!!

About to withdraw my 11/06 interview. hopefully if you guys waiting, gets it. best of luck guys.

Best of luck to you brother.

Anywho--we'll find out from Touro hopefully next week for us 10/9 interviewers. If I get accepted here--I'll be withdrawing myself from another school which has offered me a seat.

Is it too late in the application period to submit my application? I already have my LOR's.

My app was released on 9/5 and I JUST got the secondary, 30 minutes ago... got all other secondaries within a week.
