Touro University - Nevada (TUNCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
3.43 sGPA and 3.3 cGPA with 27 MCAT (8 in PS 9 in V and 10 in BS). Do I have a shot of getting an II and acceptance here?

If you have good extracurriculars then you definitely have a shot. My stats are about the same as yours, and I'd say your GPA is slightly better actually. I interviewed just last month and got in (it's where i'll be going). I say go for it!

get a rental and stay at a casino on the strip! I'm going to vegas this month to go apartment hunting, got a SUITE at the palms for 80/night.

Did any one schedule an interview recently, if so what date did you get?

You can try fiesta henderson, I paid about 35 bucks for the night. watch out for the weirdos though. this old man invited me up to his room bc he noticed that the check in line was long and thought i might be tired.

3.0c 3.69s 30mcat. i think a personal statement that reveals your character and shows that you do stuff outside of the realm of academics goes a long way.

So I got an interview invite from here yesterday evening and I called this morning to set up the interview. They told me all of the interview spots were full and I was put on the waitlist. Has this happened to anyone else here yet?

Wait wasn't the office of admissions closed today?

Oh dang.. I called today and got an answering machine that said offices were closed today. So they just put you on a wait list and that was it? Any number to track it or anything?

I don't think so since I talked to them today.

I called them around 12 PM eastern. The lady just told me that it's a pretty small wait list and people are bound to drop interviews soon.

When I talked to the lady she told me she had 2 interview spots available... Jan 26 and April...

I guess she meant that literally. But don't be discouraged because when I asked about the acceptances and slots etc. she said the list is "very fluid" around this time and that she expects a lot of movement.

Maybe you could try emailing them and requesting to be notified if an earlier interview date becomes available 🙂

Hey I just got an interview for this Tuesday,Jan 13. I guess someone drop their spot...luckily for me. Can anyone tell me what kind of questions I can expect interview day? I want to prep as much as possible in my limited time.
Thanks!

From what I've read in this thread and the survey, It seems people are getting Why DO, why Touro, nevada, and then questions about your profile. For me the simplest questions are sometimes the hardest to answer. I'm interviewing this Tuesday as well in the morning session. Good luck!

See ya there 🙂 I'm in the morning as well...

I had, Why medicine, Why DO, Why Touro, few questions related to being a Las Vegas local, a question or two about my understanding of OMM and then mostly application specific questions. Good luck everyone see you guys in the fall.

I have an interview scheduled in March. My application includes an MD letter and I recently got a DO letter that I think is leagues ahead of the MD letter in terms of how it describes me as an applicant. However, since I received an ii with the MD letter in my file, I am hesitant to contact the admissions office and ask them to replace the MD letter with the DO letter. Also, if I'm not mistaken, doesn't this school have a strict policy on no additional LORs? I am stuck in a predicament, because I really think this DO letter will help my chances.

So did you get a phone call about the interview spot? Also what day did you get put on the wait list for the spot?

If you believe the DO letter will give you much better chances then you should ask. Osteopathic schools generally prefer DO letters over MD letters anyways, especially if the DO physician specializes in osteopathic manipulative medicine. I don't know if they have the LOR policy or not but it wouldn't hurt to ask them. Based on my experience TUNCOM is very receptive to applicants' questions.

I was accepted, even with an LOR was from an MD. I had a DO letter from someone I shadowed, but if I had waited for the letter to arrive, it would've delayed my application by a month. Getting an early interview in is very important. My story is a little different because the MD knew me far better. Aside from playing and knowing that I donated troops in our clash of clans group, the DO knew me for only a short time and we never worked together side by side.

I was never put on the wait list, when I called to schedule an interview, they told me there was an opening Jan 13 or in late April, so I took the earlier date. But good luck on getting an actual interview! Hopefully, more people will drop interviews...

Did everyone get a second confirmation? Interviewing on the 26th

Want to wish all those with II good luck! Just interviewed there a few days ago. My advice is to know your app well, and know why you want to do specificially medicine and not any other helping field. Understand OMM and why you want to be a DO.

Wait, did y'all know that the Medical Education and Research Institute of Nevada is located at Touro Nevada? From what I've read on SDN, Touro Nevada has some of the strongest research of any DO school, but I didn't know that there was actually a research institute located at Touro! Even though it's nowhere near the level of research facilities at MD schools (personally, I'm not super interested in research anyway), that's pretty cool!

Anyone have any idea how full the class is at this point? Interviewing in a little over a week.

Same here for 1/26. I'd be surprised if it's 3/4 full honestly.

If the past is any indication, both 2013-2014 and 2012-2013 cycles had students that interviewed around February. When I spoke to Tava I think around last week or so, she mentioned that about half of the class is filled. I don't know if there's been any changes recently.

Anecdotal evidence here, but a friend of mine got straight accepted in an April interview at this school a few years ago. Not to mention his MCAT was a 22.

Whoa! Military?

mid-June seems so late to review the waitlist. . . It's only been two months for me and it has already felt like forever!

I'm interviewing here in 6 days. Could someone please provide some info on the interview day? My interview confirmation email really only says there will be a 20 minute interview. On the interview day, is there any group activity or anything of that sort (like something similar to PNWU's group activity)?

No just a timed 20 minute traditional style interview. There will be 2 interviewers in the room. They ask specific questions from your apps.

Has anybody been pulled from the Interview waitlist yet?

Just got the call this morning. I was taken off the wait list. If it helps, I called back the day that I got the II and they said I was chronologically placed that day, everyone after that would be ranked based on other factors, but I'm unsure of what they were.

How should I best prepare for the interview? I assume being knowledgable of every aspect of my application is a start.

Best advise is to know why TUN, why DO, know about OMM and if you have not taken upper levels like biochem or A&P it might come up. It has been four months since I interviewed, but I am sure their interviews have not changed much.
