more importantly. has anyone who interviewed last week, wed the 10 and the 11, heard back? 2 weeks is xmass eve; will we hear before then?

@ semicolon, this particular response does not really apply to you since you declined your interview at Touro early in the process. I recently met a re-applicant that was offered a spot last year at a particular school (will not mention the school); He declined the acceptance because he didn’t feel the school was the right place for him. My goodness! You should have seen the expression on my face! This applicant was offered an opportunity to become a physician, actualize his goals, earn the salary of 4% of the population, and opportunity to step out of his secure world (gain a new experience) and he chose to reapply. I know a lot of people that would give up a kidney just to get acceptance into medical school. I just hoped that more people would do their research before applying to schools.

I absolutely agree with you.

Trust me, if I had gone to my Touro interview and got accepted, I would have been ecstatic (it was my number two pick). Even with everything I said, I would still not hesitate to attend.

As I said, every school has its kinks, but every school is worth attending if you wish to be a doctor. That definitely includes Touro.

This has nothing to do with what I said, but even if every school does offer the chance to become a doctor in the end, not every school can be a good match for every applicant. It really does depend on the case. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would rather try again than attend a school they feel they would be miserable at. Indeed, the four years of medical school will already be hard enough on you; you want to be sure you'll be comfortable during them.

If you haven't already, I hope you get this offer as well. Good luck.

how long do i have to withdraw from my interview spot after i've scheduled one?

i got the interview invite today for Feb. 3, but after i thought about it more today, i'm probably going to cancel it if i hear good news from Western/COMP.

You can withdraw whenever you'd like. They can't make you come to the interview, lol.

Just let them know asap if you wish to.

Hey Colbert-

How do you feel about attending such a new school? I know that there will be kinks along the way (every school has them) but I wonder what's it like to attend a place that doesn't have a ton of years behind it. I know the Touro "family" has been around longer, but with every new school they face new challenges.

Just curious, more so than anything else at this point (my aacomas is not yet verified...sad...).
I have the similar feeling. I have received the secondary from touro. But, new school, opened last year!!! I am worried if other schools or hospitals acknowledge its function as a Med school.

i hear they are locking down lennox hill for 3rd year rotations

Wow. Really? I haven't heard anything through the grapevine. But sounds good! Lennox Hill is a great private hospital that serves the upper Manhattan east-side and a lot of its high-power clientele. They accept NYCOM DOs every year for IM residency but pretty much restrictive to other competitive residencies.
It will be great if we get to rotate there as the facilities are top notch!

thats the rumor, maybe some of the 2nd years can confirm this?

thats the rumor, maybe some of the 2nd years can confirm this?

I interviewed in the beginning of December and specifically asked about the lack of confirmed rotation sites in Manhattan, and the dean responded with Lenox Hill. As of when I interviewed it wasn't confirmed but he gave us the impression it will be - he was also trying to sell the school to us, so take it how you will...

I am a 1st year at Touro NY and recently talked to Dr. Peters (Dean of the Clinical Years) and Lennox Hill is 100% confirmed as a rotation site. Also according to what he said there is 1 more high profile hospital (whose name was not disclosed to me b/c the contracts aren't 100% complete yet) they are 95% locked in.

The school is not without its flaws but as of now (i finished my 1st semester) the pros outweigh the cons.

We are a new school BUT we have incredible resources.

Plus all the students help each other succeed. Check out www.harlemdo.com (which is a student run website created to distribute notes, advice and resources to all students) and you'll see what i mean

Thanks butters for taking the time to register and answer our question. I'm happy that Lennox Hill is now a confirmed rotation site!
The other hospital you were talking about is probably the one in Jersey.I know the Dean really hyped this hospital but didn't really disclose it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

No problem! Also all those considering coming or are a part of 2013 will don't have to worry about rotations at all! By the time you reach your 3rd year we will have locked in way more than Lennox Hill.

can anyone give me any recommendations for hotels and how to get to/from the school? i'm a socal native and am excited and a bit anxious about nyc! tia 🙂

I believe Touro provided a list of hotels that they deem adequate. I stayed at the Soldiers', Sailors', Marines', Coast Guard and Airmen's Club (http://www.ssmaclub.org/) on 283 Lexington in Murray Hill (right near Grand Central Station). It was $60 a night, but you have to be a vet.

Other cheap options are hostels for about $20-$40 a night. Depending on how picky you are, a hostel is just fine and it beats paying $200/night for a hotel in Manhattan.

I live in Connecticut, but traveling in NYC can be a pain (with parking) so I took the train in and used the subway. There are two stops equidistant from Touro - one on 125th with the B,C or D line and one on 125th on the 2 or 3 line. Taxis are expensive, but are always an option.

I would recommend using Google maps to plot you trip. There is an option to check "public transportation" and it will show you all the right subway lines to take from where ever you are coming.

Does anyone know what the class hours are like and is there any PBL?

I was just placed on high wait list. How does this work? Obviosuly it means that if someone gives up their spot I am in a hgih priority to get it. However, do they wait until the end (after they have interviewed everyone) or does this happen gradually (like if somone in my group gets in and decides not to come)? Anyone have any stats on the probability of getting in off the high waitlist?

Jason

I was placed on High waiting list and I waited until mid june to get off waiting list. The admission commitee will rank you and give ranking number after they finished with all the interview processes.
From my experience, high waitlist means u have very very high chance to get in. Also, if you are still in undergrad, it won;t be bad idea to send new transcrpits. That is what I did last year. TouroCOM NY was my first interview and I was waitlisted and I had 4 other interviews after that.
I kept getting waitlisted everywhere i went to. Yuck Yuck
Furthermore, this is still early admission cycle so people can easily end up in waiting list because the admission commitees still want to see who is applying.
Do not lose hope

I guess you win ;-) . But seriously, anyone have any imput on the waitlist?
What? That means the class is full!!! I just received email about my completion of application. Sigh... You were high waitlisted, so what are ur grades? I want some reference... NYCOM started interview in november, so i think they still have seats available, but they are still reviewing my primary application. sigh....🙁

I am pretty sure that the class is not full. It is way to early. Last year I believe that they filled the class in April or May and where taking people off the waitlist until the start of class. Don't give up yet!

It varies from semester to semester. Most mornings are class time with afternoons being for lab. Classes normally start at 8 but start at 9 on Thursday for Osteo medicine class. While the official policy is mandatory class attendance, if you are doing well in school, they do not care. Friday afternoons are off. Some labs are mandatory (as in you must show up no matter what) while others are not. If you are failing, they want you to be there. This policy might shift around as time goes forward. As for PBL, there is no specific path for it.

I thought I'd post something so others can compare their experience.

2ndary received: 17 Nov
2ndary sent: 21 Nov
Invite: 03 Dec (email)
Interview: 17 Dec
Accepted: 30 Dec (email)

This was my first acceptance anywhere so I am obviously thrilled.

To Danielgoodjob: obviously the class isn't full yet if they are still giving out acceptances. I now have 2 weeks to put down my $2K deposit.

I'm also still signed up for a MCAT retake at the end of January. It may seem asinine, but I think it could help me get off of waitlists at other schools. I'm aiming for a 34.

I have two mcat scores. 24L (V3,P10,B11) 2006, 31M(V7, P13,B11) september 12, 2008. Working in MD office for 2 years, from 2006 to now. Volunteer. TA.
Most of schools won't consider MCAT after SEP 13th 2008 for 2009 entering. I don't know why you want to retake. But what is ur original mcat? I am wondering if i want to retake the exam if i couldnt get into 2009 class. Anyway, good luck on other applications, i hope you get into one of the others, so you can leave a seat to me. lol I am so desperate to get myself accepted to somewhere.

High waitlist!!
I interviewed on 12/10 too. (Out of the two Jasons, which one are you, btw? Are you the Jason I toured the school with in Group B, or the Jason I interviewed with at Nova?) Anyway, I wanted to know what my chances are at Touro, which is my 1st choice for now. Especially since I was accepted at Nova and they want my $$. I emailed Mr. Figeroua and he said I was "very high" waitlist, and that for the previous years everyone on the high waitlist was offered a spot. WHOOHOO!! I'm still in a big dillema whether to send the deposit to Nova...I know I should, but it's hard to depart from $950 (which takes me three average music gigs to earn) when I know that I'm probably not going there.😕
Hope our interview group did well...

Just got the acceptance e-mail from my December 10th interview. So happy!

Way to go!! TouroCOM-NY c/o 2013?

What are the results from the rest of the 12/10 interviewees?

For the first semester expect to be in school from 8:00AM-5:00PM which includes classes and labs.

PBL will begin 2nd semester for us so i will comment on it once i experience it.

Seems, bunch of people here already got accepted. My interview is on February 10th. Getting a little nervous by seeing so many acceptance. I am wondering how many here turn Touro down.

got an interview on feb 3rd. good luck to you!

Can anyone provide the benefits of TOURO-NY over NYCOM or vice versa? thanks.

Hey everyone. I am pretty new to this entire forum/site and am in no way trying to put TOURO NY down. In fact, I am having a hard time making a decision between TOURO and LECOM-Erie. The thread about my dilemma is in this section, where I try my best giving my own pros/cons.

I see there there are a lot of people who interviewed/got accepted. Now I must, say, I have been to three other interviews other than TouroNY: LECOM Erie(accepted), Lecom-bradenton, and UMDNJ. All of these were conducted in the most professional and timely manner. However, I felt the TOURO NY interview lacked a lot of this. Dr. Levine would come in and out talking to the students. Not that this is bad, but would just stare at all of us and try and open up conversation. I think that during an interview things should be conducted in a timely and orderly fashion. Obed, the main administrator showed up at the last minute and apologized, but he is the guy we were supposed to ask questions to. When students asked Dr. Levine how we would get notified, he said certified mail and was sure of this. When Obed came he said e-mail. This is kind of stupid, not knowing how to send out notifications.

I think this school has potential to be really good in 7-10 years, but its just too new and I also felt that the deans were trying to sell us something. Dr. Levine really expressed negative thoughts about specialists and how there cause more problems than heal. I agree, but thats very rare, and half the reason we all go into medicine is $ and stability. In any case he kept selling the idea of getting all of us into family medicine, which a lot of students, even ones that hold the OM philosophy don't want. I could be wrong however, maybe the class of 2011 will graduate students in a bunch of great fields. I feel the optimal number for DO schools is 50% PC and 50% other fields. Maybe this school could do that, but can I bank on this notion? I would love to stay in NYC. I currently live in the east village and work at Columbia. I even went to undergrad at NYU, so leaving the city is tough. However, I feel that when it comes to DO schools, the more established ones have better match lists at the end. I would love to hear more responses and similar experiences if any one has any.

I think you have to be a certain kind of person to feel comfortable at a new school. I feel like I'll be fine there, but then, I see it as an opportunity to have leadership roles that would otherwise be much more difficult to obtain, and I personally feel more comfortable in less structured environments.

That the dean doesn't know how people are notified of acceptance doesn't bother me in the least. Nor does his preference for general practitioners - I figure if I want to be a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon (and I don't), I can do that with the education I'll get and other contacts I'll make through school.

Every school will have trade-offs. Culture vs. stability, innovation vs. hand-holding, etc. You need to evaluate what you'll feel most comfortable with over the next 4 years...

Just my .02,

S.

About your situation...have you considered NYCOM? It sounds like it would fit your needs.

Still have not heard from them, but I agree. It would be a great option for me. I'm going to paste something from another thread that has some relevance to this one.
As for myself, I won't get much from the professors or classes. It will come down to how much work I put in. I am not too worried about the way I learn the material, but in the end it DOES come down to hospitals having some affiliation with the school. And you know, I am sure in three or four years most hospitals in nyc and ny will recognize touro. It will be hard next year and the year after, but I hope the students are giving the school a good name and I do know that the Dean is fairly well connected. But you know, in the end these arguments on all of these forums are so cyclical. I know plenty of kids who got into schools like Mt Sinai and Tufts, but chose UMDNJ Newark. Why? Because it was cheaper and closer to home. In the end, these students knew as long as they did well they would get what they wanted (for the most part). I think that goes with DO schools to. I mean, there are only 28 of them. How selective can the residencies around the US be to certain DO programs? There just aren't that many where they can say, "Oh well this person is from PCOM, lets take him instead of the guy from this newer school in Vegas". I doubt it works like that if both candidates had the same numbers with similar clinical experiences. I think that as long as you GO to school in the US and NOT the CARIBBEAN or somewhere off-shore, you will be fine.

hey you guys. im heading over to TouroCOM NY for the jan 13th interview date. anyone else interviewing that day? im flying over from cali all on my own on jan 10 and staying till jan 14. first time in ny, maybe all us interviewees can meet up and discover ny.

Has it been verified or is that the initial submission?

any updates on how the second year courses are being taught and how rotations are coming along? I'm hoping this school undergoes some dramatic upgrades by the fall...it would really help my decision...esp because i love the city!!😍

I have spoken to a few 2nd years and they stated that things had improved (ie tests correlating to lecture material). As for the hospitals nothing has changed since last month.

I interviewed here and I think the school is just not for me. I personally felt the place is kind of disorganized and I did not feel the professional environment there. Particularly, the uninformed staff, the director with a loose collar, an untied neck tie, and my name was spelled wrong on the name tag and the itinerary.... The first impression was negative.
The lack of open outdoor space and windows just made me feel very stressful.

My interviewers were okay but they kept tried to sell me this idea that OMM is superior to all conventional approaches.... I was very uncomfortable with their insistence on that idea... I do believe in structural medicine but my belief is that things are belong to where they best fit. Therefore, OMM has its applications but being a DO is not entirely about practicing OMM.... To me, more importantly, it is the osteopathic philosophy that makes the distinction in becoming a community leader and promoting healthcare.

Also, the students there were just not as welcoming. When I was in the bathroom there for a moment, I was literally stared and hissed by a group of students.... it just felt weird...

Moreover, unlike other schools that are actively sorting out avenues to help students by giving out grants and scholarships, this school will give out zero aid/grant because of the economy downturn.... It does not sound helpful or sensitive towards the students' needs at all

anyway it is just my 2 cents and I acknowledge everyone has different experiences.... I am in the process of withdrawing my application/acceptance...
