So, is anyone else getting that feeling that's like "oh **** I'm really going to med school...and it's going to be a lot of work"? It's starting to really sink in after I got that post-deposit e-mail haha.:scared:

I am sorta taking advantage of the mentor program. I've been asking my student alot of questions and he's been sending me his old syllabi for biochem and anatomy, etc. it's really helpful just to get a feel for what chapters are assigned and how much reading there is. Bottom line is, i'm pretty excited and counting down the days myself! the school has alot of potential and i'm pretty excited to get out there and do the docter thing. i don't know bout you guys!

Hi everyone, really looking forward to meeting all of you in August. I emailed the contact Obed sent along to say that I was interested in the mentor program but never heard back. I'm sure I'll get this ironed out soon. Meanwhile, would it be possible to post or PM some of the relevant syllabi material. I'm starting to get that oh **** feeling jazzgurl was talking about (mostly I'm still really excited and blissfully igonorant about what I've gotten myself into😀).

how much reading is there per night?

I am on the waitlist for Touro NY but got accepted to NYCOM. I can drive from home from Touro but would have to rent an apartment to attend NYCOM. If I get off the waitlist at Touro, should I attend Touro or NYCOM?

about a chapter or 2 a night. don't know how much a chapter contains though. There are also guest lecture notes that you have to study and things of that sort.

lol for sure... definitely thinking about getting really comfortable with my old biochem book and busting out some anatomy flashcards soon... can't do anything till summer though, apparently i still need to graduate from college first 😛

I'm feeling the same way. Luckily, I didn't sell my biochem and anatomy books....I'll probably pick them up here and there or once summer starts. I just finished my undergrad and I don't have a thing to do until August 3rd. Yippee Skippee!

Anyone have any groovy plans for the summer?

I keep forgetting to sign up for that mentorship program. I should get on that.

i'm just working right now and finished my undergrad back in december. but i feel like i want to travel and decompress for a while before aug. 3rd rolls around so i think i'm gonna quit my job. don't really like it anyways. it will probably be the only time i can do that. hope ur studies go well and look forward to seeing everybody!

The only opinion that counts is yours. Sit down and write down pros/cons of each school in your opinion and then decide. Take everything into account like location, tuition, places to live, family, etc.

Some people may say Touro others may say NYCOM...there is no clear cut answer...just lock yourself in a room and go through every detail and make a decision and don't look back...

Good luck with w/e you decide:luck:

Traveling is a huge must in my book. I'm headed to Moscow in two weeks for a little soviet jaunt. In the summer I'll probably head somewhere south, maybe Peru, Argentina, who knows.

Any place you had in mind?

Just saw that you're from Cali. What school do you go to?

I will be going to Kauai in April and maybe London. I've never been there so i'm pretty excited! right now, i just want to enjoy the time off before we all buckle down and glue our faces to the books, ya know what i mean? haha

graduating from Berkeley in the spring, but i'm originally from anaheim (socal!). i still need to figure out summer plans, but i think i'll most likely stay in norcal and keep working my jobs to accumulate a little money before August... (sigh) oh, the financial joys of being a med student 🙁

groovy stuff. i'm waaaaay down south at cal poly pomona. literally a hop, skip, and a jump away from anaheim. i just finished there. its kinda weird being done with an undergrad. i always thought it'd take forever and med school seemed like a distant oasis (albeit, it's a kick in the crotch to get through). went by like a flash. a long soccer-study-party infested flash.

i got to make some money too. maybe i'll sell myself or open a lemonade stand outside my house. oh! this just came to me, i used to be an extra (i know, random), maybe i'll pick that up.

my sister lives in SF and goes to the art institute there. i'm heading up tomorrow morning for a few days to visit her, any recommendations for an out-of-towner?

I have to take a Psych course haha. Apparently being an engineering major doesn't give you the best behavioral sciences background...fmylife. Other than that I'll be working so coffeeandtea I hear ya!

CA academy of sciences! but only if there's a short line, because sometimes it gets insane :\ if you do get in, go for the Planetarium tickets! very cool stuff 🙂 plus all the usual touristy things - Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, etc. Chinatown has some good eats if you're down to walk a little bit, as well as the Mission District. Golden Gate Park has this cute little Japanese tea garden that you could visit for $4, and the DeYoung art museum is pretty close by too. or the SF Zoo... i've yet to go there but ever since the tiger "incident" i'm not too eager to visit anymore, lol.

Wow, I can't believe they're making you do that! at least summer courses are condensed nd it'll be over before you know it! 🙂 lol

Does anyone know when they will assign numbers to those who were placed on the high wait list, and when they will start to offer spots to those wait listed? Just found out and now I'm nervous... I really liked the school a lot. 🙁

They told me to take a behavioral science course too, but I was an MPH with a lot of behavioral type of courses. I talked to Obed and he said Economics is also counted as a behavioral science. Try to see if you can dig up something in your record to go towards anything remotely related to behavior.

Another preparation question: what are all of you doing for health insurance? As of what Obed sent we can enroll in the New York Medicaid plan Affinity Health Plus. But it also says that we need our own "major incidents" insurance. I'm thinking about extending my work insurance (COBRA) or buying my own individual. Thanks all.

did you go to the lecom interview on tues? I think i met you there.

anyway to answer your question, high waitlisters have ALL gotten in the last 2 yrs. half or so of medium waitlisters get in, and low waitlisters don't get in. its not a gaurentee, but its a general rule of thumb. they should start taking people off the waitlist a couple of weeks after the last interviewed group. I hold a seat there, but im 90% sure I won't be going. THeres typically a lot of movement w/ the waitlist come may and june the most.

Ironically enough, I originally needed 6 behavioral science credits, but argued my econ course for 4 of them haha. I still need two more though, I have no other courses that could maybe pass for behavioral science, thanks though!

hey all i posted on the nycom page too but since touro is also ny, i figured this would apply to you guys too/someone might have some insight..
today at work i was explaining what a d.o. was to one of the nurses. she then told me that she didnt think omm was a recognized medical practice in ny state.. (WHAT?!) i had no educated response as i have never heard anything like that...nevertheless.. freaked out ive googled it on my lunch to no avail.. this sounds off .. way off.. someone please clear this up!
thank you!!

OMM is definitely a recognized medical practice in NYS. I can't find it written in those exact words but many of the teachers at TouroCOM and NYCOM and have been practicing OMM in NYS for years - http://www.touro.edu/med/faculty.html

Also there are several OMM/NMM-related residencies in NYS, if it was wasn't recognized here in New York then there wouldn't be any -
http://www.academyofosteopathy.org/paao/residencies

If you are still paranoid then you can go here http://www.nysoms.org/index.asp and e-mail them...they would know better than anybody in New York.

Also, DOs would not be able to get a license in NY if it did not recognize OMM to a legit medical practice.

Maybe she meant certain insurance companies do not recognize OMM because not all insurance companies recognize OMM as a medical practice and so the doctors do not get reimbursed for it.

Hey! I have my interview at Touro-NY on Wednesday. I already got accepted at ATSU-SOMA. Would I simply be interviewing for the waiting list at this point?

I doubt it, there may not be as many spots left as before but I think there are still spots left, you can ask Obed and find out how many. When I interviewed on 2/10 the class was only half full...if you have good stats and what not and ace your interview I doubt highly they would turn you away or waitlist you.

Phew! That's a relief! 👍

I interviewed on March 18th, one more week until they let me know if I got in :scared:, and they didn't say anything about specific numbers, but they did say that it was close to full... But I'm also pretty sure that the waitlist moves a lot, so let's say you're not outright accepted, even if you're placed on the waitlist, there's still a great chance that you'll gain admission... Of course, this is dependent on which waitlist you're on (high, medium, low). If anyone has specific questions about the interview (preparation or what to expect etc.), you can send me a private message and I'll try to answer any questions. I interviewed with an associate dean and a histo-path professor. Good luck to those still waiting like I am! And especially good luck to those who are about to interview! :luck:

Waitlist won't start moving until after May 15th. That is the last day that people who have been accepted to any medical school have a chance to reply saying they are going. If they don't notify the medical schools by then of their intent then they lose their spot.

I think the class of 2013's mcat average should be 28ish

I was wondering... and perhaps everyone can add their speculations and guesses, but if you received an interview, is that a sign that the only criteria they will consider is your interview? I only ask because I heard such a comment from another thread. But I feel like that doing this would overlook other aspects of a candidate. More likely, even after an interview, numerical stats are looked upon in the final decision... What do you all think?

Even after an interview, the admissions committee will all sit down and look at the applicant's entire file once again. This is when certain strongpoints/weakpoints are brought up once again, which ultimately leads to the final decision. This is not to say that there are some schools that weigh the interviews more heavily than others but for the most part, the ENTIRE file is given a once over.

I agree. I was told that after the interview, the interviewers open your file and make a decision together with the dean regarding your acceptance

hey im goin to TOUROCOM in august and i need a roommate!!! i live in ny like 20 minutes from the school but i want my own place...im lookin around the 130s-150's on the west side...i know the area well and speak spanish...hit me up here or on the TOUROCOM 2013 facebook group...my names Matthew L. Abad!!!!!!!!

There are only 20 spots left in the class

Yeah, was this information given after the March 18th interviews? Man I'm nervous about this decision. Apparently, I'm supposed to hear from them on Wednesday, April 1rst... I know it's not going to be a funny day...

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew how interviewed applicants are compared and decided upon... Are you compared to those who interviewed with you that same day? Or do some people's application file just get pushed back in the rolling admissions process to be viewed at a later date?

for those waiting to hear back from admissions to see if they got in, it really helps to think of it this way: if you get on the high waitlist, your chances of getting in are VERY good. So instead of hoping to get the "acceptance" email, also anticipate or hope for the high waitlist email as well. that should ease some of your tensions and anxiety. good luck!

Hey Guys,
Don't give up hope. Like all schools some folks will be dropping out of the class to go to other schools, etc. So if like last year they will be pulling people off the waitlist into the first week of class.

Good luck and keep the chin up!
Gold

Also a word of advice,

Don't pick up any books yet for school or study Anatomy yet. Most of the first year classes really do not require the books they tell you (their slides / lecture notes are good enough) and other classes really benefit if you purchase the BRS books instead of the thick heavy book they want you you to read.

The rumor mill at the school has it that they are picking up a few new teachers so hopefully I can give you some advice on how to study for classes once I know who is teaching them.

Gold

Hey Gold,
Thanks for your kind words. Truly. There are a lot of other people who were recently interviewed there and some of them are probably going through the same thing I'm feeling, which is complete and utter worry about acceptances. I hope I get accepted so that I can thank you in person some day!

Bummer! I don't think I'll be getting into Tourocom with only 20 spots left and me being on the med waitlist. Woe is me. 🙁

I'm right there with you- I was put on the med waitlist too. I really liked Touro, but I'm trying to be realistic. Us med-waitlisters just have to wait until June to hear how things go, and try not to obsess over it too much until then. I keep trying to tell myself that! haha... and I still check this forum everyday

Hey good luck to you both with the waitlist. I can somewhat empathize with the whole waiting to find out thing... I mean, I'm still waiting for a response... and it's supposed to come tomorrow.:scared:
