TUCOM-NV Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
thanks for the info guys and gals.

anyone hear anything similar in terms of the high, medium, low wait lists?

How did yall like the campus too?

I hear alot of people getting on about how it is all in one building, but I personally think that is awesome.

Dont want to be treking insane distances to your next class or have to walk a half a mile to my car after ive been studying till 3 am in the morning.

Also, the facilities are simply pristine.

Would be amazing.

God willing.

God willing 🙂 and happy Easter to those who celebrate

Good luck, 10gauge. Hang in there. I have no complaints that everything is one building although I found the interior to be really confusing, and I have an impeccable sense of direction. The only thing I miss though is some nice outdoors areas, maybe a little garden to relax in or something. Even a lawn to sit on and eat lunch would be nice.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself here, since I'm still on the wait list and all, but I'm always planning things. Is there anywhere I can find more information about good apartments or condos? An accepted thread maybe? I'd be looking for a 1-bedroom for my boyfriend and myself. Cat-friendly. In the event that I get in. Fingers crossed.

OH yeah - and do we know the new school code for the FAFSA???

Are spots likely to open for everyone on the accepted waitlist?

Thanks for keeping our wait list list updated guys. We're all in this together! I think they were on spring break last week? I know someone said that they went through 80-something people from wait lists last year to come up with 40-something people in the class from the wait lists so that's great news for all of us. Plus, you have to figure, that plenty of people on the wait lists will already have other acceptances. Just be sure to keep us updated if you get accepted from that wait list, guys! I'm starting to get worried that I'll get accepted, but then suddenly there will be all these little logistical details to figure out before registering, like financial aid, and background checks, immunizations, all that stuff. Not to mention finding somewhere to live!

Hey svftw, you said you interviewed on March 22 too? Just wondering who you were, heh. Congrats on the accepted waitlist!

Thanks. This is Madeline. I think I sat almost right across from you...? I was a seat away from Oscar.

I believe that the University was closed part time this week for the observance of Pass Over.

U got a point. For some reason I've been assuming that all 30 ppl on the accepted waitlist will accept. But if they get an acceptance somewhere else they will have to pay their deposit to go there since most schools only give 2 weeks to pay. That's probably why there waiting till may 15th to see how many ppl they can get to withdraw their application.

For me on the other hand, Touro was my only interview so I'll will definitely be going there if I get in

This entire process is making me so anxious. Knowing that they went through 80 or so people last year is good because it can't be that much different this year, can it?

Yes, I remember you, nutellaicecream! I specifically remember talking about In n Out. lol

from what i understand, they've never <not> gone through the entire accepted waitlist and into the regular waitlist.

also, doesnt the accepted waitlist guarantee deferred admission?

I'm pretty sure the accepted wait list does not guarantee deferred admission although that would be great. Didn't our letter say something about not guaranteeing anything for next year? I'm not sure, but I think you might be thinking of the few students from the wait list who get invited to orientation in case someone doesn't show. Those students are guaranteed a spot next year. Anyone care to back me up?

Yeah, skippygonenuts, I'm one of those people who might have to put a deposit down elsewhere. Well, I don't have to. But I am on a wait list at another school that starts in July that I don't really want to go to as much as I'd like to Touro, but obviously if they accept me, I feel like I should put down a deposit to be safe, right? I'm too scared that there is the slim chance that Touro will fall through. I don't have thousands of dollars to just be throwing around. I guess we'll see what happens. I'm just happy to have all of you to commisserate with!

I emailed Oscar a while back and he said that being on the accepted waitlist does not guarantee deferred admission and that there will be no deferred admissions this year.

Waitlisted here as well. Is there a background check? I don't remember anyone mentioning it. Do we have to pay for that? Does that mean there is a drug test too and we probably have to pay for that too? When would we have to do those things? Can we do them after classes start so we can use our financial aid to pay for them? Or is the deposit for them? Why is everything so expensive?

There are also some vaccination requirements. You'll need all the usuals HEP B, MMR, etc. The one that was a bit of a shock to me was the Varicella Titer (some of you younger folk had the vaccine, but I had Chicken Pox) It'll require a blood draw and a doc order. Otherwise, they'll want you to fill out a health screening that will have to be verified by a doc.

I'm not sure about the wiz quiz, although I don't really see why medical students should not have to, every other job does and ours has some pretty significant implications for substance abuse.

Hmm ... well if Tekar has been accepted and doesn't know about having to do a drug screen or background check, then I'd think we don't have to do one. I'd imagine it would just be part of the labs they order if you had to do it and you'd pay for it that way? No idea on cost though. I agree though that a drug screen seems important for medical students but I'm almost certain that all medical students have to do drug screens before their 3rd year rotations. No clue about requirements before matriculation. I've never heard it called a wiz quiz before, ha ha. And background checks are not expensive. Like $50 maybe and you can order them online I think. I had to get a Varicella titer to be able to volunteer in a hospital, actually, so that makes sense.

Well it is a quiz and it is a pass/fail and depending on the patient, it could very well be an essay question.

mmm In-N-Out...so what should us waitlisted and accepted waitlisted folks do to let them know we're still interested? I know we can send letters of intent...what else is suggested? LORs?

Also just updating.

Accepted Wait list as well

Do we need to send any updates or anything like that for the accepted wait list.

Also do we need to respond asking to be kept on it?

30 people on the accepted waitlist...that's a pretty big number 🙁

I originally made this statement after i had gotten off the phone with the admissions office and was told that there were 30 people. however it seemed like the person i spoke to didn't know and was just throwing that number out. When i last spoke with Oscar, he told me they are not disclosing any information regarding how big the accepted / regular waitlist is or any information about anyone who may have dropped their seat.

so at this point, i have no idea how many people are on the list or if that 30 is accurate at all.

so the moral of the story is: sit tight and hold ur breath...

Well, we know there are at least 10 of us on the accepted wait list since we are all on SDN and I'm fairly certain that there are several more on the list that are not on SDN. This is purely conjecture, but I'd be willing to say that there are at least 20 people on the accepted wait list. Did Oscar tell you if the accepted wait list is ranked or when we might know our rankings? I know the other wait lists are ranked ...

I've spoken with Oscar a bit on the accepted wait list thing. From what I gather (reading between the lines, because he can't really say much), the accepted wait list is a pretty good spot to be in, and its all-but-certain that we'll be getting the call.

I know ... but wheeeeeeeeeen? I'm going crazy, not being able to do anything except wait. I wonder why they're so hush-hush about everything. One of the other schools I'm wait listed at told me exactly how many people were on the wait list with me and how many had already been accepted from it. Probably so people like me don't call them everyday. Because I would, which I'm sure you can tell, based on the fact that I bother you guys on here every single day. 😀

I'm so with you about the waiting thing. It's driving me insane! Oscar said typical waitlist movement is May/June, but even that's not a fact. I just have to keep reminding myself that patience is a virtue.

That's true. But practically speaking, it could be anytime from may till august for some people

It's already starting... people are gaining acceptances elsewhere and moving on folks. Be patient. Its the single most influential event of your life. It will happen as it is meant to happen, regardless of your stress level.

Still haven't heard anything from the school. I DID get an e-mail today though inviting me to apply to the Masters program. Says I was identified as one of the waitlisted people who could look to improve by completing it blah blah blah.

Someone mentioned earlier that Oscar said this is typically sent out to the Mid/Low WL so I'm not too confident. Merh, I just want this damn process to be over already, or at least have one acceptance to an SMP in hand so I can start making plans for next year

I got that email too. Trying to decide if I want to apply for it. It would mean moving my family out to Vegas for a year with no guarantee of staying out there beyond that.

To be completely honest, for 40k/yr I would much rather go to one of a few other SMPs I've applied to; at least I think thats it, 19,400 is listed as tuition (each of two semesters). Even Tufts and EVMS's programs are 30k/yr. Western has a similar program to Touro for half the price. I liked the school, but not enough to spend that kind of money with no guaranteed entrance the following year.

Ok, here's what I've learned about the SMP programs, in general. I looked into them as a back-up plan in case I need to re-apply. Hope I can be of some help. They can definitely improve your chances of getting into a medical program. However, it is impossible to say if it will improve your chances of getting into medical programs generally, or if it will really only provide an advantage of getting into the school where you complete your SMP. There is absolutely no doubt that doing the SMP program at Touro will increase your chances of getting into Touro in general. Some schools even guarantee interviews for their SMP students. I don't know if Touro does or doesn't, but I bet they'd give you stats on how many of their SMP students get into D.O. and/or M.D. programs. So, if you're really interested in Touro specifically, it might be a great idea for you to look into the SMP if you don't get into the D.O. class. After a lot of research I decided against an SMP because they are primarily for people who want to raise their GPAs and my GPA is pretty decent. I would be better off taking the MCAT if I need to re-apply. Also, most of these programs are pretty expensive and are fairly intense since they are usually accelerated.

I too received the email for the MHS program. I was really bummed because supposedly that means I'm lower on the waitlist. I think I'm going to apply, but I am unsure about what I really want to do if I don't get accepted. 😕

I know it might seem disappointing but think positively! It's so easy to let this process drag you down, but any wait list at all is better than a rejection, right?

I received the email about the MHS program also. Is there anyone on the regular waitlist who hasn't received that email?

Thanks, melissaliss. So true. 😀

Tekar is right everyone! and even in the event that it is a rejection, do not let that hold you back either..it just means try harder and apply again next cycle. And look for other SMPs, not necessarily at DOs schools. If you do an SMP at an MD school it'll definitely still look good to any DO school (that's just my opinion). And most SMP programs are not too difficult to get into even at MD schools.

So do your best, and shoot for gold. If medicine is really for you, then you'll keep going and trying no matter what...I know I will.

Good luck..

PS: is the school closed AGAIN?

i'm going to email oscar tomorrow to see when the accepted waitlist might start moving. i'll let everyone know what he says.

I emailed Oscar and asked when's the soonest there would be movement from the accepted waitlist. Here's his reply:

"It is difficult to assess such. Typically, some type of movement occurs in the month of May/June. But the variables are different each cycle."

Hello, I too am on the "Accepted Wait List." It's just a matter of time before those on the "Accepted Wait List" are in because I'm sure they pull from the wait list as well. Good luck to all! 🙂....They wouldn't create these two categories (Accepted wait vs. wait) without having a pretty good idea of what to expect.

From Last year at TUN: "Latest I heard was that they were ~50 people into the waitlist and on the same pace as last year (~90)." -Posted mid July 2009. This year might be tougher though with the many applicants.

I'm on the regular waitlist and didn't get a notice about the MHS program. I'm already doing post-bac work so maybe that has something to do with it.

Thanks for the update. Being on the regular waitlist is a little discouraging though...how many people could they possibly take? Especially with the accepted waitlist ahead of all of us. I'm trying to think positively, but it's tough!

I think they'll take the top third of the wait list at least based on last year...last year they went through 62 people on the waitlist in mid July to accept. Not sure how many they ultimately went through, maybe 80? Also, I'm not sure if they had an "Accepted Wait List?" They'll be much movement after May 15th.

Thanks. That is actually reassuring. How many people are on the waitlist? By the sound of it, I'd say there are a lot of people!! 3X80=240??
