Tulane vs. Albert Einstein

Nothing beats being in the city. Plus, Einstein is a great school.

Albert Einstein hands down.

Background: I've been accepted to Tulane and still waiting for a decision from Einstein. I'll try to be as objective as possible.

Cost: Einstein ($45k tuition + 6k fees) less than Tulane (54k tution + ?? fees)

Clinical training: Einstein's Montefouire is second to none. Tulane shares a hospital with one of the LSU med schools and the hospitals looked dilapidated.

Location: New Orleans is definitely a better place to live than the Bronx. Tulane wins without question.

Research: Definitely more research opportunities at Einstein; Tulane used to have a lot of research going on (it was ranked #6 by USNWR at one point back when USNWR used an older ranking methodology+criteria) but Katrina wiped out the labs/buildings/homes of a lot of faculty and made them relocate. In addition, USNWR changed up it's ranking methodology+criteria and subsequently, Tulane became ranked in the 50s. That was when the dean decided to stop releasing info to USNWR so that is why Tulane is currently unranked.

Living: Einstein hands down. They house you for ~$500/month (including internet + utilities) ALL 4 YEARS OF MED SCHOOL. They also provide transportation to clinical training facilities so you won't really need a car. In addition, I have heard they have a separate free month during 4th year where it is solely dedicated for residency interviews.

All in all, if I had the choice, I'd go to Einstein.

Bumpp??? I am now in your same position! Weird coincidence hah... cause the two schools are so different. Anyone have any more thoughts? OP, have you decided or thought more about it? I'm almost definitely thinking Einstein because of the location (i have family in NY) and cost will most likely be cheaper and ranking. So, I guess I'm curious if anyone has any reasons I should rethink?

Bump! I'm right there with you... Although still on 3 waitlists (ugh), this is my current choice. Tulane has some really great global health / tropical medical programs, but I'm nearly committed to Einstein. Any thoughts in addition to those above?? Thanks 🙂

What's your reasoning behind this? Do you mean the Bronx is less safe, or not as exciting? At least from what I saw, I thought Morris Park looked pretty safe and is reasonably close to the bustling, urban areas of NYC. I've already committed at this point, but would still be good to know.

My interviewer was off campus so I had to walk about 5 minutes to get to his office. I don't know if it's just me, but I honestly did not feel safe during my walk to my interviewer's office. And his office was only less than a half mile off-campus. This was during the morning and really sunny outside too. Again, it might just be me because I'm from a safe suburban neighborhood and although I've lived in cities before, I've never been in the ghetto/projects (which I am going to go ahead and term the Bronx as), so this is just my perspective.
