OMG you guys! So many of you, yay!

I'm trying to not check my email every 2 minutes.
 
I've been panicking over how I would survive 10 days waiting for an interview email. Had the urge to check this morning at work, and there was an invite waiting for me.. started jumping up and down, so excited!!! 😀 Good luck everyone, hopefully everyone here gets good news!
 
Interview here as well - and I'm OOS! Very surprised and happy 🙂 Hopefully I can make it over!

For any OOS or people not living in Davis, I'm a Davisite. Feel free to email if you need any help or have questions about the town or the school. Us interviewees have to stick together! I work as a concierge at a hotel here in town, so I should be able to direct you guys around pretty well.

Congrats to everyone who got an interview, and for those who didn't yet - keep on hoping. I didn't get an interview last year, so keep your hopes up!

I think it still gets pretty busy... last year I think I just hit redial on my phone about a thousand times until I got through.

Then I shook like a leaf for four hours straight because I was so excited 🙂

Congratulations guys! ...and to those still waiting, stay sane.... it wont be long 😀.
 
Woohoo - UC Davis decided to give this 2nd rounder a try this time! yay! 🙂 Will start calling obsessively tomorrow to set up an interview time.

I can't decide what kind of day I want to choose. DO I want to be late or early in the process? DO I want to have heard back from WSU or do I want't to still be waiting for that? argh. Why can't they just ASSIGN it. haha! Curse them for being considerate of our schedule! 😉:laugh:

First off - congrats! I really hope this is your year 🙂

All of those considerations are personal choices. Many people find they stress much more after the interview than before it, and others like to get it over with and complete their last bit of "control" in the process. I liked interviewing toward the end so that I heard the results faster. Whichever you choose, don't psych yourself out too much (especially with the outcome of WSU)
 
Wasn't able to get through to set up an interview time today. From the e-mail, it made it sound like we had a pre-set date/time but we had to call to confirm to find out when it is...glad to know we have a choice now!

Also, what do you think is appropriate to wear for the orientation day? Casual wear like jeans and a nice top?

Casual is perfect for the orientation day.

All the current students there will be in scrubs (so you can pick us out).
 
Also for scheduling interviews: our first day of winter quarter finals is Monday, March 14th so, if you are planning on sitting in on a class on the day of your interview, you should probably choose a different day.

..... otherwise I don't think it makes any difference.
 
I ended up choosing an early-middle date, though now I wish I chose a little bit later. I was debating for quite a while when to choose, but was caught by surprise when someone actually answered during my constant redialing.
Either way, though, with earlier or later interviews, the few days before we find out will be the hardest.. I've been waiting on Iowa since the beginning of December and now that it's down to less than a week, I'm freaking out, but before it was really close, I wasn't too nervous about it because I knew I wouldn't hear anything for a while.
 
I didn't have time to constantly redial today, but I will start first thing tomorrow morning!

I'm thinking something middle-ish timewise would be good...
 
I'm debating whether or not I want to go to the orientation day... I'm planning on driving up from LA on the interview, and, depending on when I schedule my interview, I'm not so sure I want to do that 12hr (round trip) drive twice! What are OOSers planning on doing?

Any advice? How informative is the orientation? Is there anything that I would learn at the orientation that I couldn't the day of my interview? I really wish they had just planned the orientation during the same time as some of the interviews.

What I am mainly interested in learning more about is the new curriculum... is anyone else worried about being the "guinea pig" class?
 
The orientation is at the beginning of the interviews because that's the logical place for it. It sucks that it ends up being an inconvenience for those too far away with later interviews, but it doesn't make sense to have it somewhere in the middle after half of the applicants have already had their interviews, either. :laugh:

The day of, your interview schedule is literally get there, interview, go home. You can request a student host and set up to sit in on a class and/or get a tour and/or meet for lunch the day of, but the school doesn't organize anything formal for it.

It's the price you have to pay for having interview times and dates be this flexible and spread out, I guess. Pros and cons to everything...

edit: I'm the curriculum committee rep for the class of 2014 (which means that I sit on the faculty committee responsible for implementation of the new curriculum). I will answer questions, but I just really don't have time right now to do any kind of long overview if there aren't specific questions. Also the awesome Ms. Llama Slug will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that there WILL be some kind of faculty presentation at the orientation on the new curriculum - not sure if that one is being recorded or not. Also I should point out that I'm really jealous of you guys for getting this new curriculum. 🙂

I am not an OOS student, but I was attending undergrad in a different state last year. I couldn't fly to Davis from Missouri twice, so I forwent the orientation workshop. I was totally fine without it - I just watched the student panel recording online and felt like I hadn't missed out on too much.

If your only reason for wanting to go is to hear more about the new curriculum, then I'm sure you can find out about it in other ways. Like Nyan said, the day of your interview the school just schedules you a 20 minute slot, and that's it. However, you can take the initiative to sit in on classes, talk to students to get as much information as you'd like, and maybe even schedule meetings with faculty/administrators (I did all of the above on my interview day). When you call to schedule your interview, perhaps ask if it would be possible to set up a meeting with a person who could run you through the new curriculum and answer your questions.

Would the new curriculum keep you from attending Davis, if accepted?
 
I chose the very last interview slot in large part because I wanted to make sure the committee had a fresh memory of me when they started deliberations. Of course, one would hope that the memory they retain is a positive one!

I was finally able to schedule my interview, March 1st. Tried calling first thing in the morning but I guess a lot of people had that idea too, so tried for half an hour and gave up. Tried again around 11:30 am and it took about 3 minutes for someone to pick up! I was also caught off guard by someone answering (I was getting worried I'd never be able to get through). They wanted me to come in on the 22nd but couldn't because of my Illinois interview, but I asked for a following Tuesday in March and they were very accomodating and super friendly!

No, you're not alone. I'm still anxiously waiting. It's getting more stressful everyday...

We keep the old one, unfortunately. New one looks way better!
 
I've been trying to call all day too! I'm not going to know what to do when it actually starts ringing.
 
Finally got through on the phone, and the woman was super nice! It sort of seems like they are trying to fill the early dates first, because even though I am in state I am going on the second day. Hopefully that isnt a bad thing!
 
Nothing yet. Now I feel it is more of a count down to when rejections go out. Oh well, I knew this wasn't my year and that i was in the midst of improving my application. Congratulations to all who got invites, you deserve it!!!👍

It's actually a psychological principle more broadly known as the "serial position effect" and has to do with primacy and recency -- so with respect to learning and memory, we are able to remember things that come at the beginning and at the end, but not the middle.

So yes -- theoretically you'd be at an advantage if you get one of the early or late interview spots -- but avoid the middle. The psych major in me who used to do research on this stuff has really wanted to do research on this with Davis to see if there is any correlation between interview day/time and decision. Hmmm...maybe I'll inquire... 😉

I really like the idea of the new curriculum! The PBL curriculum is one of the reasons I'm actually really interested in Cornell... but now that UC Davis is implementing it (and if I'm lucky enough to get accepted to Davis), it'll make deciding on a school even harder, haha.

Last year UCD sent out the interview invites spread over a week I believe - this way not everyone calls at once. Don't despair yet.

I skipped the orientation as well. The only thing I would have done differently is arrange a tour with one of the very generous SDN people!

There will be a faculty presentation on the new curriculum at the orientation 🙂. Im also not sure if it will be recorded and posted but I will figure that out and get back to you guys...

GI exam what's to know food goes in one end and comes out the other and some of it gets absorbed and there's some neurons and hormones and sphincters and stuff but whatever.

Ahhh... I was hoping/thinking that they would rate us during our interviews and then compare all the numbers at the end objectively, so they would judge you just after the interview and their later memory of it wouldn't affect their judgment. Any idea if that's actually how it goes or it is more biased?
 
My interview was definitely right in the middle of the interviews last year, and I got in. I did not get in when my interview was on the second day of interviews. I really really wouldn't like, freak out over it. They'll take notes so they remember important stuff, and prior to the interview you'll get your picture taken too so that they can attach names with faces.

Anyway generally there are 6 people on the admissions committee and only 3 of them will have interviewed you. You'll basically have to impress those 3 such that they will go to bat for you when the entire committee meets at the end. I'm not really sure if there's a straight ranking based on "points" or not, but historically they've decided on the class while meeting in a group, choosing from the interviewees.
 
oh ok, so it's just 2 sets of 3 people that do all 220 interviews? somehow that feels more intimidating!
 
Well, it won't be the same 3 together every time, it's basically what 3 out of the 6 are available at given times...so only 3 at a time will interview a person but one might leave and another come in for the next interview, etc...
 
It might be better just to focus on what you want to say during your interview 🙂

Just to throw my 2-cents in about the timing of invites, admissions decisions, etc, here's my experience from last year: I got my interview invite in one of the first "batches," my interview was the 3rd one on the 1st day (talk about having time to forget me!), and I was one of the last to find out I was accepted (decisions started going out on a Wednesday, I found out the next Monday at 4pm - that weekend was pure torture!). I thought since I was one of the last notified about acceptance, I was probably near the bottom of the "wish list", but after I accepted my admissions offer I was awarded an academic scholarship that I didn't even apply for. So here's my point: I think the order of notification really is random, so try not to read into it, even though it's practically impossible not to.
