are you sure its 3.8 gpa? That sounds too high for UA, the fast facts that UA releases says 3.7 (which is a little more believable considering that schools like UPitt and Cornell have gpa avg of around 3.7)

Stats for the average accepted student to UA (fluctuates slightly year by year) according to '07-'08 MSAR:

10 VR
10 PS
10 BS
P WS
3.79 overall GPA
3.74 science GPA

Sounds pretty much on par with the majority of medical schools across the country. I don't think you are at any disadvantage with high stats. There are some people in our class who did extremely well on the MCAT and they made in somehow. Additionally, the majority of my fellow classmates that I've talked with were raised in AZ and went to UA for undergrad.

I think the avg GPA for UA is so high because there is a plethora of students in AZ (ASU is the largest university in the nation in this regard) compared to the number of spots at the medical school. Nearly all AZ pre-meds will be vying for the only allopathic medical school in AZ as their top choice. I'm sure a ton of ASU and UA pre-meds have near 4.0s and chances are, they will be applying to UA med as their #1 choice based on location, tuition, and quality of education.

Did you ask about why your app was deficient last year?

No. I assumed it was either my MCAT or my Phoenix interview (they grilled me on this one about my research -- I was unable to draw out my pathway from memory and also unable to specify the specific type of biochemical interaction for the ligand/binding site I was researching, so I think that might have looked really bad). For this year, I went ahead and retook my MCAT and got the same score, so that sucked, and then of course I memorized my research like the back of my hand in addition to completing the master's, so hopefully those will outweigh my crappy MCAT.

Wow, I can't believe they asked you that kind of stuff. I had my interviews at both the Tucson and Phoenix campus and they were so laid back and easy. In fact I was joking with one of my interviewers about all the interview horror stories I had heard, and I thanked her for making it so easy on me. I'm sorry you had to go through that - yikes!

I guess the only explanation for that might be because it was something that you were actually researching on. I did get asked extensively about my extracurricular activities, though. So maybe that was what they were also attempting to do for you. Maybe they just want to weed out people who pretend to be doing some activity but really didn't participate in it.

I know its too late for most of you... But UMC parking garage is for UMC visitors only and its ALWAYS full and a mess. You have to have a hospital department stamp your ticket, and show it to the booth person when you leave. And the College of Medicine doesnt count. They are trying to save spots for hospital visitors and keep UofA Health students from parking there. I think it even says in the pre-interview info to not even go there. Your best bet is parking at Highland garage for your interview. Just look at parking.arizona.edu or PM me or one of the other MSI's that hang out here from time to time. Good Luck everyone 😎

PS renny Phoenix did the same thing to me when I was there, so tell me about the pathway of your research from sophomore year of college, I ended up just telling the guy what I could and apologizing about the rest. Just dont lie about anything and its ok to admit if you dont know something.

For my own selfish purposes, I'm hoping for the bias against extremely high stats. 🙄 Mine are pretty much exactly the average for the MSAR ^^. I have heard a lot of extremely "numbersy" people getting rejected or waitlisted from UA, along with a lot of the same type of people getting accepted. It seems like the interviews may be the most important factor, what do you guys think?

I think my interviews WERE the reason I got into med school. Don't let anyone tell you they don't mean that much. Also, if you have the opportunity to find out why you were rejected/wait listed from admissions, DO IT. I was completely wrong about the reasons I was wait listed.

I have to agree with Mandertwin 😉 There is more to getting in than just MCAT scores. And UofA does and will take those other things into consideration.

Do the admissions committee and the few medical students who are on the committee see the names of the files they are reviewing? If so, how does it work if they know that applicant?

Those on the ADCOM do see the whole file.... If they feel that they cannot be impartial on a particular applicant then they are required to remove themselves from the decision making for that file.

Did anyone check-up on the rumored Dec. 8th date for releasing acceptances? Dec. 1 is Monday (I can't believe the month is here!) and I didn't want to start being all nervous next week and obsessively checking my email if it the second week is confirmed...

I was told that they are planning on sending the first accept notifications out during the first week of December.

Did they say about how many students might be accepted? Are we talking 10? 20? Thanks!

Omg that's sooo soon, and they definetely send out emails? Or could it be a call or just the mailed letter?

Last year they notified acceptances in March via email. Pretty much everyone who was accepted received the email at the same time....

Waitlists and rejections went out a week or two later than the acceptances but those won't come out till March this year.

I guess we will find out the rest soon enough😀

I asked, but they said they couldn't say. Maybe after they release the list they can tell us.

I heard the first batch would be 10 people. Thats just word around town though, who knows.

That sucks. And what would be the point of that, exactly. Most likely the 10 they choose would probably have multiple acceptances on hand by that point... not that I'm bitter at all :meanie:

Now without knowing information about when or how many each month.... I would probably agree with Rennykim, and dont worry there is multiple rounds and waitlist. Uofa usually goes in to the 50's off the waitlist for the last few years. But I havent heard anything about when the first batch or how many would be in it, but 10 does seem rather small for a 110 person class. Just dont beat yourself up if your name isnt in the first batch or even the second. Even a waitlist ticket can do the trick. Hang in there everyone! ;-) And then you can be like us and never be soo happy to see our family and friends for thanksgiving, esp with neuro block.

I interviewed in mid-November, and heard from the admissions staff that they were about halfway through their interviews at that point. (They are anticipating just under 600 applicants this year, with 99% applying to both campuses.) I was told that those of us applying around the same time as myself wouldn't be considered for the first batch of December acceptances, but that some of us may get acceptances as early as late December. So those that interviewed early have a greater chance of getting accepted in early December. My point is that if you just interviewed recently, it would be unlikely that you will get an acceptance the first week of December. I don't know what the cutoff interview date was though for the first acceptances.

Anyways, I'm not going to stress over this. Most likely I'll be attending one of the two Arizona osteopathic schools, but if I get into UA, that would certainly be nice. :xf:

I heard from Tara at my Phoenix interview that they would be accepting around 10 in December and that Phoenix would be done with their acceptances by mid February. I don't know about Tucson, though.

I don't see what is the point to even make December the first month of acceptance releases if it will only be 10! It is like they are trying to tease everyone...Just wait until January and give the majority of us a reason to be excited...

I bet those 10 will be people that are so highly qualified that they will be attending other schools...

That would probably make the most sense, and could very likely be the case. But keep in mind all the rumors you hear of the U of A being biased against people with insanely high numbers in order to ensure they accept people who have a good probability of attending.

Even if I had a 40 MCAT I'd still choose U of A, for more than just one rea$on.

I definitely agree. Why send out acceptances if there will only be a few? They've interviewed enough people by now to be able to accept more than ten. 😕

Maybe we will get lucky and both campuses will do 10 and they will ALL be different people for a grand total of 20! Hahahaha still 20 out of probably 500 who have interviewed....

a previous post said something about acceptance releases in the beginning AND end of December...did anyone else hear that? I wonder if they will release 10 a week then or something..

I remember exactly what was said at my interviews, and I just kind of nodded along, but when I got home and really thought about it, it didn't make sense. They said they'd accept in batches of 5?? Pretty much, someone would randomly grab 20 files, they'd rank them 1-20, and ranks 1-5 got an acceptance. Then I got confused though, because they said something like you would keep your rank if, for example, you were ranked 6 in that last batch. I don't get it.

What I do get, is that there is a lot of randomness here... An average applicant could get accepted if he is better than 15 files randomly chosen. While a competitive applicant would not make that round if he was in a stack of your typical SDNer. If anyone can clarify what I said, or add on to it, everyone would appreciate it. I do know that this is exactly what I heard though, so I don't have any of what I said wrong.

how does this ranking work if each adcom member is ranking a set of 20 applicants??

They will figure out the way to beat the stock market, cure aids, cure cancer, end world hunger, create world peace.....etc etc long long before one will finally understand the mysterious thing called medical school admissions. I have been on that ride and let me tell all the newbies that the ride is just starting. Just wait until spring lol, esp when you havent got a letter and you still hoping for even the waitlist. Just try not to get too caught up in the dates/numbers when were and so forth. Just some friendly advice from those that have been there and survived. 😎

Amen to that.

So, this is the week that all 10 of us SDN contributors hoping to get into U of A for 2009 matriculation get our acceptances.

Right?

Hah. But, I really do hope that someone here on SDN gets accepted sometime this month. That would make it all a little more real, anyway.

Happy December everyone!

I just called Tucson admissions and they told me that acceptances will be going out the 2nd and 4th week of December, but they do not know exact dates. So, I guess we can all relax for now b/c we won't be hearing nothing for sure this week..

#@#$@#$%^^#$2345@!#$&^*&*(%^&U#$

More time to wait??? This is KILLING me.

I also spoke with Tanisha (Tucson) via email and confirmed that the first set of acceptances will be released the 2nd week of December.

Wow, lucky for people who get notified on the 4th week. That's the week of Christmas. I know what I'm wishing for... hahah.

Well at it has been confirmed from the admissions office. I'd rather know for sure that they're coming next week rather than hoping they come out this week and not be sure about it.

How many of you guys are really getting anxious because your only interviews have been at UofA (both campuses)? I know I am...

Right there with you! Hopefully we'll get that acceptance and not have to worry about those other interview invites 🙂

So I finally decided to sign up and join in on the conversations since I've been reading the posts for a few months now.. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for an acceptance!!! Good luck everyone :xf:

Ditto!! Honestly, it's kind of freaking me out all this waiting (especially as a reapplicant)...but I am trying to stay positive 🙂
