rejected, meh. i got a 31, 3.75. didnt submit sec to other schools until nov-dec, and only got interviews from mayo and georgtown. gotta retake i guess

Wow, Mayo and Georgetown? That's pretty awesome, especially for applying late. If I were you, I'd just do some more EC's and apply early next year!

Congrats to those of you on the waitlist, and good luck!

Don't give up everyone!!! I have by no means gotten in yet, but I agree with Cuddy's advice. Don't think retaking the MCAT is the best answer! Plenty of people get in below 30 and it's just a number. Personally, I applied for some clinical internships and plan on working at a neuro practice. It's ALL about the clinical!! For us fellow WLers... let's hope for LOTS of movement!! haha

If you are #23, you will be hearing for sure! Congrats! I hope I can join u at Tucson! Move WL Move!

i hope its not my ecs... im burnt out. the people in this thread are great... maybe c u guys later on. gl everyone

Good luck to everyone, with the WL, other schools, or reapps. I hope the WL flies along!

For those going DO- my good friend is a great DO doc and had to quit taking new patients he was so swamped.

And criminy phx- drop the bomb already!

I just called Tucson and they said they gave out 99 WL spots and have already given out 4 acceptances from the waitlist. So hopefully all us WLers will know relatively soon whether we will be Wildcats!!!

Just checked the waitlist email and ended up being ranked top 50. If you were rejected, I recommend beefing up on clinical because I think UA really places a great deal of emphasis on that aspect of the application. Good luck to all of you and let's hope the waitlist surpasses last year!

Can someone refresh my memory - is there a date in May at which point people holding multiple acceptances must give them up and choose one school?

Granted, May seems like a very long time from now...especially if I need to beef up my MCAT. I for sure will be meeting with Tanisha after April 1.

Wow. I'm sorry Protein. I thought for sure you'd get a good waitlist spot. Med school admissions continue to remain a complete mystery.

Congrats to all those who got it. For anyone on the wait list, my personal thoughts are that they will probably go deeper this year than any other year considering last year's drop in board scores. Last year they got into the 60's. If you're <=60 on the WL you have a very good chance IMO.

Oh, and for those of you going to AZCOM and are interested in practicing in AZ, I'd fill out a WICHE app ASAP. The deadline for priority was Oct. 15th of '08 but you can still be considered as an alternate.

Would you explain your reasoning? This makes no sense to me.

Aaaah! One can only hope! It's challenging because I still need to move forward as if I were rejected I think, since you really can't bank on anything. And I am soooo close to that very fine line.

I'm sorry to those who were rejected this morning. Last night I was lying in bed awake from 1-3 am thinking about potential rejection. Not a fun place to be. In essence I potentially have many more nights of that now, lol. So yeah, I think I need to move forward with the assumption that I need to improve my app.

Lower board scores from last year will probably mean more people giving up their spot for another school (those who got multiple acceptances) thus more movement on the WL

I think some people may be concerned that the new curriculum didn't prepare the students fully for boards, hence the drop in scores.

Exactly (whether that's true or not). And there are a lot of people who have been accepted who have multiple acceptances.

Got the waitlist email and it just proves to me that UA does not really care about the MCAT.

I am also thinking that a lot of people will be accepted from the WL since many students will choose another med school because of the low/failed step 1 scores.

We will have to see just how deep the WL goes but if it helps at all I know a couple of people on the admissions committee and they said they thought it would probably go 20 to 30 people deep this year. I asked why and all they said was because of rolling admissions and also the economy. With that being said a friend got into Boston and UofA but decide to go to UofA just because of money.

UA really dislikes me for some reason.

Deep breath Proteinpowda, Deep breath.
Now take an energy drink and
Run Proteinpowda Run til you feel better.

Hey don’t worry about it. They hate me too! I actually work for a surgeon and am at the med school right now for work. So it makes me even more mad because I have to be here.

Ok, time to go hit something hard...repeatedly...if any of you see a guy crushing softball after softball at some cages in the Tucson area, be nice to him. He just got rejected for the second year in a row.

Sorry, that seems to be a tenuous argument!

If I had to choose between UofA and another med school, I wouldn't really care about board scores from this year, because I know I won't fail. In fact, I think I'd do rather well and my match chances would still be primarily on my shoulders, not the rep of the school. People don't choose to go to UofA over other schools because of its match list is so much better than others. Sure it's a factor, like everything else, but it's a small one.

My guess is that the low scores or failures were more a result of poor selection by the AdCom than poor teaching because there are plenty of higher stat brainy people who get rejected in favor others with uniqueness and special attributes. My selection between UofA and another school would weigh the same factors as others had to do in previous years.

The points I want to make are that I disagree with your assessment and that there are lots of factors involved, including the influence of the board scores on the AdCom's decision-making. It's speculation, and I wouldn't want to be the one to put false hope into people.

So far I haven't seen anyone on here mention that they're choosing another school over UA because of the board scores, but we'll see what happens I guess. Seems like blind speculation to me though.

It's a way of envisioning the wait list will run deeper. Anyone smart enough to get into med school realizes every year there is a variance in scores. UA has had some really great years and last year not so great. And doesn't everyone enter med school thinking they'll get a 240/99 on step 1 and graduate at the top of their class 🙂 Pre-meds are a cocky bunch....well with the excetion of the UA thread 😎
The people that worried about board scores will be the ones using First AID for the USMLE from the first day of classes on...and they know they'll do well and are not too worried about where they'll go. The schools can teach you to pass....getting those really high scores is a function of you.

So board scores will probably be a pretty mute point for people. Bad economy = people want a low cost of living = Arizona offers low cost of living.

Health care is stepping towards universal coverage = pre-meds and healthcare practicioners envision lower reimbursement in their future = want less debt = want lower tuition.

And the admissions were rolling this year. Oodles of people got in already that would've been wait-listed last year. And b/c of the economy more people applied this year...so probably fewer got into other schools.

Sorry but at least in my view that's the harsh reality of it; not just b/c I'm mad at UA or anything...

You're right, it's anyone's guess how deep they will go on the WL. Although I would argue that it is much more speculative to say that the drop in board scores was due to a poor selection of students rather than a dramatic change in curriculum that happened the same year the board scores took a hit. Also, since your score on step I has a lot to do with your residency placement, I believe many people who have >1 acceptance will take this factor into serious consideration.

The economic argument holds water though in my opinion. Considering the financial crisis, there may be more who chose UA for its cheap tuition rather than looking for a school that produces high board scores.

And just to clarify, I do believe there were probably several factors involved that led to the drop. I plan to rock the boards no matter how last years class did or how this years class does. And finally, why the heck am I sitting here typing instead of studying for our final on Friday? I need to break this SDN addiction...

I know how bad it stinks to not get into medical school! This is my third time applying here and maybe it's easier to say now that I got accepted but I don't feel too bad about not getting accepted the first two times (although I am sure it would have been great). I have had the last 4 years to get to do some really interesting research and new clinical experiences. I have spent the last two years getting my masters after the last rejection and it has been really great! I know things will be easier, having taken more advanced A&P classes. I know it sucks now, but with more experience, you can only become a better applicant, and become more prepared for medical school. Congratulations and good luck to every one!

#64 here. Come on, phoenix... pull through for me!

I agree that it is nice to at least know where you stand. In limbo.

I am retaking the MCAT to hopefully get off the WL at another school, but does anyone know if UA cares about this quarter's grades/MCAT/EC's or is everything pretty set in stone here once the waitlist is out (since it's ranked)?

How much of an impact do you guys think this really had? I am just curious.

Actually it seems like way less people applied this year. I read earlier on this thread that over 700 people applied 2 years ago. Then last year it was about 570, then this year from my waitlist letter I was very surprised that UA only had 486 applicants. Even though I am disappointed to not having gotten in, I feel like this school definitely gave me a fair shot. I mean, with approximately 160 acceptances between Phoenix and Tucson and let's say another 60 more spots off the waitlist between the 2 campuses,.... that is almost 50% of applicants getting accepted. I doubt any other state school in the country gives us these kinds of odds. Although I still didn't get in, I feel like this year's class had much less competition that in prior years... so I still feel like we were lucky for that, as many people who have/will get accepted this year may not have gotten in if our applicant pool was similar to prior years.

once the waitlist is out, the number is set in stone. i know this from experience last year. sorry.

I just called Phoenix and the woman said the WL is coming out the week of March 23rd... feels so far away!!!

Does anyone know if they send out emails to update people on how far they've gone down the wait list at a particular time? Or do we email them?

Got accepted today! I totally didn't expect this! My guess is that I was high on the waitlist and someone already dropped out and opened up a seat.

Anyways, for those on the waitlist, remember last year it went to 65 and I really don't think it will be that different from last year. I hope to see you all next year in Tucson!

I just tried to change my name to BiteMeAdCom...but apparently it was already taken by someone 😕

Well I am rejected... I guess there is no more point in visiting this forum now.... I still got an interview in NY in april though... so YEAH BABY! But adios Uofa

They don't send out any info, (dont call us, we will call you) and once the wait-list is set, then your ranking wont change. The best thing for the Admissions staff and everyone is to have one person call and then post the info on here. Helps everyone when you have 100 people calling/emailing to find out the current ranking. And be prepared for it be unpredictable, some days would move 3 or 4, other times a whole week with no movement. So help your fellow SDNers and post any news that you find out and save them a few calls/emails.
Condolences to many, Congrats to those with WL spots

krosburg or anyone who knows,

Do you know if the AdCom checks the AAMC registry/database to see if applicants have been accepted anywhere else?

- whoops, almost wrote my real name

Interview at mayo prob means enough EC

Hey guys, I skipped out before opening "IT" and went to work. Anyhoo, my future goals:

1. Meet with Tanisha
2. Meet with you guys? Do a group of you want to get together at say Epic Cafe on 4th Ave in Tucson or somewhere to discuss our upcoming plans and ways to strengthen our apps?

The beat goes on...

I would be open to that.
