When I interviewed down in Tucson I stayed near the Marriott hotel out west near Starr pass for a night. My only complaint was the southwestern decor. 👎 I hope the houses out there don't have any built in southwestern-ness, because other than that and the fact that there weren't any shops nearby it was a really nice area.

I would advise not living on the Westside of the freeway & near Starr Pass. As nice of an area it is, I work at a Westside hospital and it is a major pain getting to and from campus by the freeway during the day. It gets really backed up by the underpasses. I have had friends that lived out there and only did it for a year because they couldnt stand the drive and traffic. Although it might be easier to buy a house that direction for cheaper.

I really would recommend the River & 1st or River & Campbell area...I live around the area and the drive is perfect to UA and there is tons of shopping, food, etc. around. Everything you need is pretty close. It is also a nicer area than the areas 2 min. from campus. There are a lot of apartments around the area as well so it should be easy to find something, but I am not too sure of the avail of rental homes.

Hey HereICome,

I remember you mentioning how interested you are in surgery. There's a surgeon who specializes in pancreatic islet cell transplantation speaking at UA COM - Phx coming up. I'm not sure if you're down in Tucson or up here in Phoenix, but I'm going and was wondering if you - or anyone interested - wanted to go with me. Since I'm a type 1 diabetic myself and pretty interested in surgical endocrinology, I'm definitely going to make it. I'm going to ask some of my medically-interested friends as well, but I doubt anyone I know will be interested. It says it's for all audiences and I've emailed the contact listed here in the announcement requesting more info:

http://events.ahsc.arizona.edu/detailview.php?event_id=620&calendar_id=6&timeframe=&num_days=30&palm=

If anyone is interested, message me.

Wow islet cell transplantation sounds really interesting. Im down here in Tucson and I might be interested, not sure if I want to drive to phx though. I wonder how they do it.

Yeah, it's pretty cutting edge stuff. They've been trying to perfect the technique for years, so I'm excited to hear what he has to say about it.

Yeah, sure. I'll be walking into the office tomorrow, so I'll do that. Yeah, my source said that it was common knowledge amongst the first year med students that the class size has increased...it's weird that Ann said no. 😕

Wannabedoctora, when you call wed for the waitlist number could you probe a little deeper regarding a possible 115 class size.

Could you ask something like what is the likelihood that offers will be made to fill 115 seats for next year?

I think we need to know if there is any chance of this happening, the "as of now" statement that cuddy received makes me wonder if it still might happen for us.

nonlocality

I wonder if they are able to culture the cells somehow or if its almost like transplanting a piece of Pancreas.

Edit: Im confused about this statement. "makes me wonder if it still might happen for us." -nonlocality What might happen to whom?

When cuddy asked whether or not they might accept 115 people. She said

.. I just called to ask and she said it is still 110. She was aware of the speculation it seemed, but said as of now "they had not gone above and beyond 110" for Fall...

So I am wondering whether this response implies the possibilty of them still accepting 115. That is what I am asking wannabedoctora to uncover.

Thanks for all the responses about housing in Tucson. I'm gonna be heading up (I mean down...) there to re-tour the campus and look at potential apartments.

Brooother thanks for all your input! It's always interesting to hear other people's perspectives. I was talking to a student who knows several people who are first years both at Tucson and Phx and her impression about strictly the atmosphere was that Phx seemed like more of a solitary study environment, and not as much class interaction outside of classtime (both for studying and socially) whereas Tucson was more social, both in and out of the class room, studying together, being on campus more, and planning trips or social events.

The guy I know at Phx lives a few blocks from campus but still studies on his own, usually in Tempe, which is a good fit for him. I guess that's pretty common. Just depends if you like studying more socially or solitary.. at least as far as atmosphere goes. Obviously the curriculum is a whole other issue. 🙂

They are up to my lucky number 13 as of around 9 this morning.. Guess I will be seeing some of you soon! Best of luck for those still waiting!

Super congratz to you K. I hope that they get to the upper 20's soon so that I we can be classmates. Maybe Ill throw a bbq to celebrate when they get to like 40 or something.

Edit: errr quick question, you saying they're at 13 means they've accepted you correct?

Thats great StudentK! Congrats! Hopefully by the time WannabeDoctora posts here-it will be up to 14..that would be cool.

I really enjoyed reading this whole post-I'm way outa the loop being an engineering student and not knowing anyone applying. Lucky #13 on the WL for Tucson.. still pinching myself and agonizing over the wait!

Yes, it does mean you've been accepted! Yay! Congrats, K!

Aw man, nope, still 13 as of 1pm or so...but I did ask about the class increase. Tanisha said that it is still a possibility for us, but no word as of yet...So, hang in there, gang!

Congrats, Student K!

Congrats K.

Thanks wannabe, can you elaborate any more on what tanisha said about this 115 issue. Did she give you any hints or body language stuff?

New plot out tonight.

nonlocality

Did Tanisha mention what circumstances or criteria they would use to extend the class to 115? I wonder if it is based on budgeting that is yet to be determined or if there are other reasons..

Well an increase in 2 is better than none! Yay for constant WL movement!

Well, I didn't get a chance to walk in today because of lab and a lot of work, so I just called. The tone of her voice didn't give anything away. She was pretty direct. No other questions or answers. It didn't sound like she knew any more information. But she said that it was a possibility...

Sorry about not going in...just didn't have enough time, and I wanted to post ASAP.

Oh I see...Thanks for calling though!

Nonlocality-can you call for the WL update on Friday and ask them about the 115 size for the last time..You can get the exact info you need about all this ambiguity. I think that it is really crazy (but great) that after they are done filling spots in May/June, they might go ahead and add 5 people to the class anyways! Those 5 people would be having some reallllly great luck this year then!

Btw I'll call Monday.

Thanks for the additional info wannabe.

I think hereicome will do friday's call.

From now on every two weeks or so we need to add a question about any change to the 110/115 class size number.

My sense is that this decision will happen late in the process and it will be dependent on how deep in the waitlist they are going just to get to 110.

Well, they had around 5 students who deferred from last year's class into this year's class. That would mean that they are already at 115 and will only accept 110 new students. Do you guys think the deferred students are included in the class count or will they accept 115 new students?

Hmm...could there be a possibility of them being included in the 110 number? Because that would not be fair.

I think the decision was made based on the fact that they really want to ensure that waitlistee # 64 makes it into the class. If they make it to that stellar applicant with a class size of 110, then they probably have no need to accept any further.

Yeah, that's probably it. They're just really regretting not accepting waitlistee #64 off the bat, and now they're a bit worried. What a stellar applicant he (I) is (am).

😀 Agreed.

That deferred student question is a great one indy, perhaps hereicome can ask about it on friday when he calls in.

Here is the latest plot.

Data Analysis-
We are staying on the trendline from our last plot, which puts us 1-2 offers ahead of last year.

One more thing to notice is that we are ahead of the 08 trendline by about a week, for the same offer number. This might also signal that we will go higher this year than last.

I also added a red bar above my current estimate to indicate an additional 6 more offers to possibly fill 5 additional seats if they go to 115. That 6 additional offers is based on my estimate of an 80% yield off of their waitlist offers.

Estimate-
My estimate remains the same as last time from 50-63. But it might go up to 69 if they push out to 115 students.

Perhaps a special exemption might be made for madevans, we are all going to have to brain-storm a reason why.

Hahaha. I bet Tucson's adcom is reading this nonsense and wishing they didn't number their wait list, as they'd probably want to move me down after all my shenanigans. I've high-jacked an entire thread and made it all about me.

Thanks agains for working on the wait list curve for us all. So far, it's been nothing but good news for us high numbered people.

I already posted this on the other thread, but was wondering what you guys thought as well...What kind of laptop is everyone getting for next year? I know they recommend a Gateway tablet at UA, but Krosburg advised against using them. I have had a Dell for the past 4 years that is OK but I am not in love with it or anything.

Mostly everyone I know raves about Mac's, but I wonder if they might not be as convenient for downloading notes, using certain software, etc.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I have a Mac, and I love it. However, I have heard software compatibility issues with Macs, especially with this histology program software they use in the classroom. People who have PCs can use the software at home, whereas people with Macs would have to study in the classroom.

I love Macs, and I have no regrets with my MacBook Pro, and if you do decide you want a Mac, get one over the summer...Apple runs specials over the summer, giving away printers and/or iPods with a purchase of a computer. I got an iPod Touch and a printer free with my laptop. 👍

I have had a Sony laptop for the past 4 years of undergrad. It has served me fairly well, but I never take it to class because it is too clunky. And I've had problems with viruses as have friends of mine with PCs. Macs have significantly less problems with viruses and are so lightweight so you could bring it everywhere 🙂

I'm not sure about specific software compatibilities but I know word docs work on Macs. Would anyone think it to be worth it to ask someone in the office about this issue?? I was thinking about getting a Mac over the summer and lay my PC to rest, but if none of the required software would work... then that might be a pretty important factor.

Stay away from Gateway, too many problems! Tablet pc are a wonderful idea but you'd have to go with an expensive option.
UA actually vote against getting a Mac, unless you install parallels that would run PC softwares on Mac but it just doesnt seem like a good idea because it comes with a whole lot of glitches and problems!
:scared:
Dell are very reliable but the weight is usually a problem!

check out this link: http://shop4.frys.com/product/5666861?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

I am still not sure what to get, and I really would love to own a mac just because they're so light and reliable (unlike PC, no problems with viruses) but i want somethng that is good for school and i think compatability is a big issue!

that was my two cents! i would love to hear from other people what they think

MacBook air/Pro , dual-boot vista. People always make things so difficult when there's such simple solutions. Vista runs best on a mac anyway 😛

Hm, I like the sound of that. My desktop has vista right now and it's working great, but a portable dual-boot Mac sounds awesome.

I heard that due to the stimulus plan, Arizona is going to get $1.3 million from the federal government...and $150 million dollars will go back into funding state universities...yay! But then again, does that mean we won't see an increase in class size? I heard that they were going to increase the class size because of the need for money.

I will gladly give them $80,000 of my money over the next 4 years. Come on, waitlist!! 🙂

Thanks for all the feedback on laptops. I really think I am going to get a Mac in the summer.

Hereicome are you going to call for the update? I hope it moved from Wednesday...this week has been hectic, I need some good WL news for the weekend!

I've been using my Macbook for 3 years now without a hitch. Installing Windows on it with Bootcamp is as easy as installing any other software.

Hey everyone, I called this morning just in case we had another no answer afternoon like last week. They said they just accepted #14!! Maybe by the afternoon they will have accepted another!

And I agree Cuddy, I was planning on getting a Mac this summer anyway but now that I know software will be compatible - I'll def be getting one.

Ok either they screen my calls or stop answering the phone on fri afternoons. I calleda few times with no response. Thank goodness someone called this morn so we have some idea about the movement. Hopefully it gets to 64 this year.

Congratulations 4ANR6N!!! You will probably be staring at the email for the rest of the night like I did. Are you going to go to 2nd Look next week?! There is a Dbacks game involved!

Thanks lovemed for calling early today. I guess whoever calls on Fridays should call around 2 or something. I hope this great movement continues!

Accepted to PHOENIX at 4:36 pm!!!!!!!!

I am going to second look week next week! The only thing is that on Friday I have a test and get done at noon, so hopefully I can show up late. I'll call them on Monday. See you then!!
