lrkoehle, way to alienate people and backtrack your comments. 🙄 There are some things wrong with some of your assumptions.

First of all, you assume that highly qualified students from AZ don't want to attend UA because it is UA. I can't deny that not every school is for every person. Of course there are both highly qualified and "low quality" (as you infer) applicants who prefer another school to UA. But perhaps it is also the location that people don't like.

Case in point, my husband's company is a well-funded, secure business. Nationally respected, exciting opportunities, and they pay well. But even THEY have a hard time getting current and potential employees to come to Tucson. And in this economy, no less!!

Some applicants may have been in AZ their entire lives. Perhaps they are itching to see another part of the country and experience life elsewhere. In this scenario, again, it is not necessarily UA that they are shunning, but the state itself. Let's face it, the desert and towns like Tucson and Phoenix are not for everyone. I personally love it here. But I've also had the opportunity to live in many other cities.

While a school's prestige and substantial scholarship opportunities may be enough to convince students to live in a dreadful location (Mayo in your case), an average or above average school may not be able to overcome its location, especially without such funding options.

Further, if you claim highly qualified students from AZ don't want to attend UA, what makes you think highly qualified students from other states would want to attend UA? If they are as qualified as you envision, surely they could get into other schools, even if not necessarily their home state (e.g., Cali).

Bottom line - I know I will be a good doctor. If that means I have to reapply next year alongside you, so be it. If that means I get into my state school off the waitlist, so be it. Yes, tension/sensitivity is high at this point. I may be taking your comments too much to heart. But a low quality applicant - in your eyes - may still be an excellent doctor. I fully intend to be.

Rare is the medical school which only accepts in-state students. UA is shifting towards a more modern program. I think diversity is always a good thing, even if it diminishes our chances somewhat of getting into our state school.

I know that I may have alienated some people, which at this time of year with finals and the waitlist is probably quite easy to do. Where did I back track though? You all are wrongly assuming that when I initially said THEY may be looking for higher quality applicants that I was referring to the GPA and MCAT. Furthermore, many of you are wrongly assuming that I think you would be bad doctors or are unintelligent if you are on the waitlist, but this is completely incorrect. I personally know people with low GPA's and MCAT's who are great with people that would make wonderful doctors, but most likely won't get in to med school because that is not what the school wants. Sunny1, I don't know anything about you (GPA, MCAT, EC's, etc.), but if you truly care about people and being a good doctor, then I believe you will be a good doctor. Let me be very clear here, you can be a good doctor in any specialty coming from any US medical school, so I am not trying to insult state schools (why would I? I currently go to one).

As for your point about money generated from secondaries, I agree, and I will admit that the cost of secondaries did not occur to me before you mentioned it (see my post about studying too long for finals). This is a very valid point, and assuming UA doesn't screen (or minimally screens) before sending out secondaries, this will bring in a lot of money. I do still stand by my belief that the cost of educating a medical student is so expensive that UA will not make a HUGE amount of money off of the few OOS students attending UA (assuming they don't charge $60,000+ in tuition).

The point about location factoring into students location is also a good one. This is by far my biggest reason for not wanting to go to UA. I have lived in AZ my entire life, and I am certainly ready for a change. As for the little shot at Mayo, it is not all about the low tuition for me, I am excited about the idea of living in a smaller city like Rochester with affordable housing. As for the weather there, I am not too worried about it, I have spent a decent amount of time in areas with snow. I know it will be different to live somewhere with all that snow, but if I really hate it, then I can go anywhere I want after med school (no, this is not me somehow saying UA students can't do the same, so I hope no one assumes this). There are many other positives about Mayo that lead me to believe it would be a good fit for me.

To get back to location, I don't believe at least for the phoenix campus that the location would be a negative for OOS students. Just look at the huge growth phoenix and the state as a whole have had over the past decade. I haven't spent huge amounts of time in Tucson, so I won't comment on its location issues. As for the qualified OOS students, maybe location is something that will draw them to UA. I don't get it, but it seems like a lot of people love hot, dry weather with an overabundance of sunshine.

I want to reiterate to all of you, that I don't think you would not be a good doctor if you are not accepted/waitlisted at UA. A huge number of good, smart people who would make good doctors don't get accepted. Good luck to all of you, and I hope the waitlist starts moving a little more for those of you still waiting (May 15th is right around the corner).

Lol you dug a hole and pissed some people off. I dont think your going to be able to fill that hole either.

You seem like a nice person though. Its just better not to make statements that could be taken negatively directed at a group your about to associate with.

I'm not really taking a shot at Rochester; there's just not much in that city aside from Mayo. Simple truth. Not that there is an abundance of free time as a medical student anyway. 🙂 It's clearly an exceptional place to be from an educational point of view.

Have you considered applying to the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine in conjuction with Case? It's very similar - small program, research-oriented, working in a really neat medical campus - except it's a 5 year program and tuition free. You should definitely look into it if you haven't already.

I agree, I have managed to dig myself into a bit of a hole, but it wasn't because I was trying to piss people off. My reason for bringing up UA potentially wanting to up the quality of applicant was actually based on things I have read here. If I recall correctly I have seen on this thread that the recent board scores were low, and that UA is wanting to stop taking risks on low GPA/MCAT students. I know individual board scores are dependent on the student, but if a school as a whole struggles then maybe something is not going well in admissions. That is what made me think that maybe they were trying to increase the quality of students by expanding to out of state students. Now, I'll admit I am very loosely using the term "quality" when referring to the students, because I am not on the ADCOM and I don't know what THEY consider high quality.

Regardless, I would like to think of myself as a nice person, and I typically would refrain from potentially upsetting anyone. However, I think my judgement of how much it might have upset some of you was off due to being tired last night.

I didn't think you were taking a major shot at Rochester, just a little bit with regard to the location. I am excited about the idea of going to a smaller city with some different weather. Also, I am a pretty boring guy, so I am not too worried about the lack of excitement there. I kind of just wanted to say what I do like about it, and that it really isn't motivated exclusively by their financial assistance (though that is nice).

I actually did look into Cleveland Clinic, but I stupidly took too long to get involved in research despite a very early interest in it. Basically, I don't think I would feel comfortable trying to get a LOR from my PI. They require at least one research LOR, and I don't think I can get it. It does seem like an awesome program, and the really small class size seems cool too. Oh, and free tuition is always a plus.

btw mayo is not really a research school. It's a very good research center, but is not directed the same way as the power houses at harvard, stanford, umich, cornell etc... dont go to mayo if u want research in basic sciences. my interviewer went over this with me.

i was lucky enuf to interview this year, but rejected. but after talking with other couple people who i knew very well and interviewed there before... i know I'm not alone when i say mayo is a very unique setting... and it has resources for their students most other med schools don't have. out of my few interviews, I felt the caliber of students there was the most exceptional and their education is superb. plus i've never met so many generous people in one place before.

I was sorta like u, wanted someplace diff from hot and sunny.. but i think ull realize most people can't stand rochester. I've realized in this cycle Tucson has near perfect weather. but i didnt realize how badly i wanted to be a doc until i visited mayo. it's no wonder y it has so many patrons and endowments... good luck!

Oh, and trust me mayo is not boring! the place is friggin huge, and its gota over 2000 beds! I've worked at the umc, st josephs, and st jos in phoenix... but i just wanted to sit down and cry during our tour at mayo... i dont know y

UA is going to have to release some new information soon regarding OOS applications as the AMCAS submission date is quickly approaching. They at least need to give an approximation of tuition, that's a big factor when applying OOS.

I was saying I don't mind a lack of excitement in Rochester, I know Mayo is huge and exciting. I am not a huge research guy, but I do like that Mayo does incorporate research into the 4 year program. It isn't an extra year like some schools, but a 13 week research quarter at Mayo does sound exciting. I think more exciting than a research quarter is the selectives, which would give any student the opportunity to really know what they want to do early on.

That is really awesome to get an interview at Mayo, I am taking a visit there at the end of this month just so I can see the place in case I am not lucky enough to get a real interview. As for getting emotional about their system, I understand that. Every time I look into information about that school I get this strange feeling and excitement, but it is my top choice for a reason. I don't want to distract from the point of this thread, UACOM, but if you could PM any info/suggestions about your experience with Mayo, I would greatly appreciate it.

Has anyone called recently to find out if they've made it to 25-26?

Also has anyone seen how stupid this weeks poll is?

The rumor floating around here is that OOS tuition will be $40K

Yay! As soon as you get your call HereIcome you better post on here stat! Who is next? Wannabedoctora are you in the early 30's? Is nonlocality? So exciting that we wont have to call so much, we can just look on here to see everyone finding out one by one!

Word to big bird.

It looks like tomorrow is going to be my day. Too bad I have 2 finals tomorrow. Yuck 4 hours of taking tests. Lol Im sure if they call me Ill be in a test 🙁

:beat:

Yes, 2 today!

Hopefully we keep this movement going and maybe even move faster. Eek. :xf:

Sarah it's nice to see that you still hang around this forum and still root for the wl. It's too bad you chose phoenix you seem like you would have been a great classmate.

Ok so when they get to like 35-40 I'm going to throw a BBQ and everyone is invited, accepted or not, Tucson and phx. Would anyone be interested?

:beat:

I would have come accepted or not, if only I could justify a 1.5 hour drive. And Hereicome, just put the damn cow in your sig already since you're having such a love affair with it. Haha.

And yeah... dumbest poll ever. I couldn't have thought of a more arbitrary question even if I tried.

You're right. Asinine.

Dangit madevans you were one of the peeps I really wanted to come.

And I dont put it in my sig because the sig doesnt show up on every post.

:beat: FTW

Naw, I'm waitlisted at Tucson and really want to get in. I have a house in Tucson, so I'm staying here either way. I'm #38 - hopefully my new lucky number.😉

Are you accepted or wait listed or what at UA phoenix, sarah?

And I used to love the number 64 (I love nintendo 64 - sorry HereIcome, I don't have a PS3 but I do have a wii), but I may develop some pretty bitter feelings towards it after this year...

Regardless, I'm still praying for a miracle. The more I think about the proposed pancreatic islet cell transplantation center to more I love UA tucson.

Oh my mistake I thought sarah was the person who was accepted a while back and chose to go to phx instead. Oh well now hopefully you will be a classmate. Madevans do you like your wii?? My and the gf wanted to get one. Im still dissapointed in your not being able to come down here.

I actually didn't apply to Phoenix...or any other schools for that matter. I put a few others down on AMCAS, but then decided not to fill out the secondaries.

I love the wii. Most of the games I like to play are on multiple systems anyway (guitar hero), but then I really like the classic mario-type games and the other more interactive games the wii has too. Most girls seem to like the wii games a lot more, which is nice so they don't hate on you for spending all your time playing halo (oh, but I do love me some halo) or gta or something without them.

Yeah, I'm really dissapointed too. If I were 40 or below on the WL, I could justify the drive... but 64 is too far out there in the fringe.

AH crap. You fooled me into getting my hopes up hereicome. I thought that was going to be an open seat for me to sit in over at phoenix campus.

And, brave move there sarah. I'm happy (barring some wait list catastrophe) it's going to work out well for you.

What is your avatar Sarah? Are those turtles or something?

Hahaha me and my gf love halo. She used to bug me to play it with her all the time. Halo 1 is classic. It wasnt sarah who I was thinking of I guess. It was spicyangel lol my fault.

Ha I cant believe you guys are still awake.

Dude Im really pulling for you to get in somewhere this year. You seem like you have great doctor potential. I suggest you try to somehow show your enthusiasum and desire to the phx people. Their lack of giving actual numbers to people may suggest that movement within the phx wl is possible. Maybe theyre trying to see who really wants it.

WOW! You found yourself a keeper of a gf, there. Halo 1 is awesome... I haven't played it in so long. I was a killer with the pistol.

Yeah I've really got to go to bed. My last final is at 730 am tomorrow. 😱

Correct me if I am mistaken, but they look look African spur thigh also known as Sulcata tortoises. I used to own a couple as pets -- great creatures.

They're my baby desert tortoises. My parents own the parent turtles, and last fall we found the babies in the back yard. They are super-cute!

All right. Everyone channel your energy toward the wait list. MOVEMENT! MOVEMENT!

...I sound like a revolutionary...

So, all done with finals, I graduate tomorrow, and I just checked my email.

There's one from wake forest.

ACCEPTED! WOOOOOO HOO!

Best day ever.

I know this is the U of A thread, but I thought I'd let me real internet friends (here) know. 🙂😀😎 So happy.
