Today I've been lucky to be accepted to The University of Cincinnati and am holding acceptances at Wayne State University, and MSUCHM. One thread's been made on this but it wasn't very insightful and it was made about a decade ago.

Wayne State Pros:

1. In state tuition: 30k, 30k, 30k, 30k over the 4 years.

2. Near home so I know the area/closer to parents (pros and cons in itself)

University of Cincinnati Pros:

1. Higher research ranking/recognition.

2. Great city life.

Wayne State Cons:

1. Detroit area and I kind of want a change in scenery

University of Cincinnati Cons:

1. OOS Tuition: 47k, 43k, 43k, 29K (I get in-state tuition for the last 3 years)

My goals:

At this point, I would be looking at a competitive internal medicine residency which would allow me to go for a competitive fellowship. (I have also been looking into the DIRECT-IR path recently too). I will be looking for research opportunities during medical school which will be necessary for a competitive residency application and obviously Step 1 performance matters but I'm sure either school will be good for that.

Isn't Cincy 47k for MS1 as OOS?

Edit: so by my calculations you're looking at a ~43K difference in tuition+fees between the 2 schools over 4 years. A little more if you include increased transportation costs (getting home for holidays etc). Would you be happy at either school?

if you're sure Cincy will make you happier than going to Wayne State, the $$ will not be as important. don't know anything about Wayne State but personally I would find it hard to turn down Cincy. If you were stuck with OOS tuition for all 4 years that would be a different story!

This makes me greatful Cincy is my cheapest choice!! For me, Cincy was cheaper by that same amount (11k/year). Fwiw, I would gladly choose a more expensive school if it's the one I preferred. Thankfully my decision is made easier by the fact that I prefer my cheaper option 🙂

Let's go to Cincinnati 😛. Seems like everyone who is seriously considering matriculating there is in love with the school. There's something special about UC and I don't think you'll have the same experience and training at Wayne.

UC student here, extremely happy with my choice to go to UC. 43k is a LOT of money, especially at ~6% interest. Also, recognition factor doesn't count for much, and if you want to go IM, you'll match IM. Keep in mind though, that you will likely change your specialty a dozen times. That said, if you're absolutely sure you'd be happier, then by all means come to UC! Just my 2 cents. Feel free to PM me if you have other/more specific questions about UC/Cincinnati.
