I really don't know what to say. It seems that the feeling I got during the interview and tour was confirmed by reading this. I'm a little speechless.
I mean, there are other schools who do this, but it's pretty crazy that being the center for OMM research and carrying the DO name as proudly as they do leaves me feeling a little disillusioned by this.
But, like you said, this doesn't affect us or the next year (probably next 2-3 years) so nothing has changed in my desire to go...I'm just a little surprised.
One of my interviewers was fervently DO and had 3 generations of DOs, 2 from TCOM, and he is on the board of admissions too, so I'd like to see how he and others respond to this. If this is really only the idea of the top officials, I could also see the faculty and administration shooting down this proposal. In that case, TCOM would seem even more die-hard and independent than it used to be.
You could view this as a benefit no matter what happens. I kind of hope they do the latter.
cybele, I believe that if you signed up for that program, you are indeed committed. When I interviewed at other schools with rural programs, they made it painfully clear that if you decided to go into a non-primary care specialty after being accepted to the rural primary care program/scholarship, you would have to pay back all your loans pretty much upfront (within 6 months or so?), among other things.
Applying to it, getting accepted and attending TCOM amount to a contract more or less, which is why your app might've been viewed more competitively. If you have real concerns, I would contact them, but you're probably going to hear roughly the same thing.
