Hey guys,

Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.6 (science GPA 3.3)
MCAT: 20
ECs: shadowing, volunteering at hospital, part of various organizations and hold leadership in some, researched in two labs and got a publication, tutoring elementary school kids in reading and writing

I was wondering what are my chances to get in? and is it too late to apply for this fall?

Thanks a bunch!!

Looks good, most schools accept on a broad spectrum for the MCAT. You're chances are good. I would apply as soon as possible. I would take the risk and apply now, but I would recommend getting advice from others on the board or health counselor.

I just submitted my application so hopefully they will consider me! I talked to some advisors and they said seats are still available for this fall to about 5 of the schools so I'm sending apps to those schools! Hopefully I get lucky! Thanks for the input!!

Good luck!

Which schools?

When does the next round of application open?

hey Ive never posted a thread on here because its too soon for me to post my stats because im only a sophomore in college and havent taken the mcat yet. but I just want to know if I am on the right path for pod school..

I have an overall 3.83 gpa but this semester has been so stressful. ive taken too many classes and OUCH im going to get my first C in general chem 2. i hope that doesnt ruin my chances? i will hopefully get As in all my other classes and that would bring me to a 3.7 gpa

I am a biology major

i volunteer at a hospital 4 hours a week, Im around a 100 hours now..

i also volunteer at a hospice

i plan on doing research as well as shadow pod.

make sure the rest of your semesters are as high as possible and you should be ok

If you keep your gpa up there you don't even have to score that well on the mcat...

So I'm applying now (about to submit app) after being waitlisted in Nov at 2 DO schools and nothing else :/

My stats are 3.2 and 31O, what are my chances at this point in the Pod cycle?

Hey, to be honest, why are you rushing into Pod after being waitlist from DO?

Trust me, 1 year is not that big of a deal to reapply! I graduated from college 2 years ago and I still have friends from the same graduating class still applying to MD/DO school.

If I were you, I would do a guaranteed postbac where you automatically get accepted into the DO school with a 3.0 gpa in your postbac classes. Some of those postbacs are the DO school in Erie PA, DO school in Virgina and there are several other ones. Application is still open for some of them.

Unless you are sure you want to be tied down to feet, I wouldn't just apply to Pod school as a back up. DO schools are pretty easy to get in with the stats you have.

What year are you? You just took Gen Chem 2 so i'm assuming you are a freshman or sophomore? Why are you worried about your chances when your GPA will most likely change? (Ochem I &2 , Physics I & 2. )

What is your MCAT score breakdown?

cumulative 3.0
science 2.9
Mcat:30
-100 hours of shadowing podiatrists and full time job
however I have a D in organic chemistry lab and no time to retake.

Chances and advice?

Bballmanager,

I see you are talking about this cycle. Do you have a LOR from a pod? A lot of the smaller schools are full. I know DMU got back to me about an interview invite 2 weeks ago but stated that it is for their waitlist since the class is full.

As for the D in chem lab, maybe whatever school you get in will give you an conditional acceptance as long as you get a C in a summer course of the chem lab course? I know when I was taking summer classes last year, there was a girl in the class who got into dental school in the spring but withdrew from Orgo II and had to take it over the summer in order to start dental school in the fall.

Your verbal is super low. I have been told by med school admission committee members that verbal is the most important score ( I used to work in the med school office during my undergraduate studies). Almost every pre-med bio major knows science or can learn science, but verbal comprehension can't be taught as fast.

The good thing is, verbal is the section that you can see huge improvements on in the shortest time.

Hey member 533927, i am talking about next cycle, however I am taking Physics over the summer and have no time to fit in the lab.

In an effort to consolidate the "What Are My Chances?" (WAMC) threads and make a single place where pre-pods can request a review of their applications, this thread has been made.

Please make sure to include as much of the list below as possible so that others can give their most accurate opinion.

1. Schools you are applying to
2. cGPA/sGPA
3. MCAT Score
4. Podiatry Experience
5. Non-Podiatry Shadowing/Clinical Experience (If Applicable)
6. Volunteering

Do keep a few things in mind when posting or responding.

1. The members writing a WAMC post are asking for your opinion on where they stand. As anyone who has been through applications knows, it is an expensive and stressful process so please be courteous.

2. Since we are making a single thread to keep WAMC posts in, all other WAMC posts are subject to being moved into this thread.

3. Please keep your posts on track with WAMC and responses to WAMC posts. Since the thread is a large collection of posts, let's not confuse it with off-topic posts.

You're good.

1. Schools you are applying to
DMU and Scholls I'm very interested in

2. cGPA/sGPA
3.39c / 3.5s

3. MCAT Score
23 / 19 / 22

4. Podiatry Experience
Began shadowing a doc two months ago, 3 days a week for about 4 hours

5. Non-Podiatry Shadowing/Clinical Experience (If Applicable)
MD doctors shadowed (roughly 75hours)
DO doctor shadowed (roughly 20 hours)

6. Volunteering
Out of country 400hours of volunteering. Childrens hospital 200hours.

My low MCAT and mediocre GPA is keeping me out of DO schools. Applied late last year and didn't get any interviews. Just got my 3rd MCAT score of 22 and it doesn't look like anything will change even if I apply early to DO schools. MD seems out of the question atm.

Apply early and you have a great shot. Average to above average GPA and average MCAT(taking into account your highest).

Is a 4 on the verbal a red flag to my application

I would say yes. A lot of schools have minimum scores for sections (5/6). You score in total is okay, especially with your GPA. Contact the schools to see what they say.

I contacted western and NYCPM, they said that they dont have a cut off score on the mcat in any section, what do u think should I go for it?

Then most certainly apply there and you will have a better than 50/50 shot at getting in. I think Temple has the cutoff of a 5/6 in each section. Your GPA is solid for pod school....assuming you're talking about next cycle

Go for it.

If you are applying early then you have plenty of time to retake if you really need to.

I will, as soon as they open the new cycle and hopefully I get in.
Thank you for your encouragement

If you are applying for the next cycle, then you have plenty of time to take the MCAT again and try to increase the verbal score of 4 that you have right now.

A 4 means you missed more than half of the questions... to put that in perspective, you can get a 2 by randomly guessing every answer...

Take the MCAT again and remember, this isn't like MD applications where you need to have everything in when the application cycle starts. In fact, the majority of people apply in January.

Hello,

I got an interview next week at NYCPM and an interview on June 3rd at CSPM. I have another interview on June 21 for Kent State, but that is for the waitlist. I was wondering if you get an interview, what is the likelihood of getting in? I know it's late in the application process, but I was kind of surprised I was offered an interview. I really want to know if I have a shot because it's a lot of money for travel expenses. Lastly, I talked to NYCPM and CSPM and they do have seats, but they did not specify how many.

My GPA is a 3.5 with a 3.3 science GPA.
MCAT is 20 (7/4/9)
BS in Biological Sciences with Departmental and University Honors
Lots of ECs ranging from shadowing a podiatrist, research, volunteering, tutoring, active in many organizations, etc

Thanks in advance!

I think you have a really good chance of getting in this cycle, be really prepared for the interview. If you dont mind, what is the score of each part of your mcat?

cGPA - 3.06
sGPA - 2.85
MCAT - 22 (9V/7P/6B) - taken a few years ago, will re-take in 1 month

MPH - gpa 3.65 in epidemiology

LOR - 1 podiatrist and 1 general surgeon

EC - worked at podiatrist's office for 1.5 yrs, surgical outcomes research with general surgeon for over 1 yr with one first author publication and oral presentation at a surgical conference (will have another two first author pubs in a few months), some MD shadowing (~16 hrs - both ophthalmologists), volunteering (non-medical) ~100 hrs, politically active, pretty decent optometry/ophthalmology related background as well (research-wise)

I thought about OD but really like surgery. I wanted to go the DO or MD route but don't feel competitive enough to pass the initial GPA and MCAT screening. DPM seems like a good fit for me and I can see myself being happy with it.

Ideas on weaknesses for DPM?

I am all for taking it again if you want to increase scholarship opportunities but your MCAT score will get you into podiatry schools right now.

I just read that MCAT scores expire after 3 years for podiatry school. Mine was from 2009.... I guess I'll have to retake and hopefully not go the other direction.

Hello
I've been between DO and POD for a while now. So I thought I'd ask about my POD chances. Overall GPA 3.13 ish and science GPA 3.0 however that's with grade forgiveness, so a bit lower on podiatry app probably between 2.7 -3.0. Post bac > 3.7 GPA. MCAT 8V 8B 8P 24 Total .

You will be fine getting in. But you do need a solid letter of rec. from a pod. All the schools want one.

I think NY has about 15 seats left. The thing about NY though is that they take in alot but a lot of ppl leave or fail out before the year is up. I think a NY student told me her class started with 130 and it was down to 100 by the end of the year.

Obviously they still have seats at this point in the game, you are fine, your MCAT is a bit low. Your grades make up for it.

As far as I know, as of right now CSPM has 2 or 3 seats left.

If you want to know for sure, you can email the admissions advisor and they will tell you.

sGPA: 3.0

DAT: 23AA/23TS

50 hours of shadowing a podiatrist

I'm applying to NYU and Temple.

Chances?

Thanks

You are fine with temple, but I have been hearing that nycpm hasn't been very welcoming to those with only DAT scores.

You are fine with temple, but I have been hearing that nycpm hasn't been very welcoming to those with only DAT scores.

Why not? MCAT is for medical school while DAT is for dental.

Because podiatry is not dental school.....you should possibly have taken the MCAT to broaden your chances

Podiatry isn't medical school either, or else we'd all be there.

Truth. Nothing gets my blood boiling than the 90% of the kids in my class posting "med school this and that".

but back to your original post.

a 23 is an excellent DAT. You be accepted into both programs and my magic 8 ball says scholarships are definitely a possibility.

NYCPM still takes the DAT. We like to talk about how we are phasing it out, but we still take it. I met quite a few students interviewing with DAT scores for the class of 2017. So as long as the e-aacpmas is still allowing you to submit your DAT for NYCPM, they are still accepting it.

Podiatry isn't medical school either, or else we'd all be there.

True, but instead of arguing the merits of DAT vs MCAT, I think MCAT is better in terms of chances since the majority of applicants take the MCAT and thus it's an easier comparison tool among the applicants.

Plus, only Temple really actually advertise that they are taking the DAT, if you look at the New York literature, it doesn't mention DAT very often. Yes, the school will still look at the score but if I was an admissions person, I would be thinking "Well does this person even read the requirements and about how schools are favoring MCAT?"

Anyways, OP has a good chance, especially at Temple since I know that several people got accepted just 2 days ago that are declining the acceptance since they are going to some other school. But it all depends on when OP gets the interview done since I think NY and Temple are the only one with seats left. Oh and maybe Scholl.
