so, basically my status is still up in the air ? I could either be rejected or invited for an interview, right ?

yea, it really means nothing. it just means that they've put you on the ranked list. All applicants are compared to one another and offered interviews that way.

you won't be rejected until all interviews have been offered in feb/march.

good to know. thanks jolie...btw are those artherosclerosis plaques you have as your avatar (am i saying that right ? 'avatar') ?

Hey folks, I'm a recent Baylor graduate (now at Vanderbilt for residency) - if you have any questions I can answer, I'm happy to chime in. Baylor's a fantastic school - the interview (and seeing the gargantuousness of the Texas Medical Center) will blow you away. And the area around the TMC is safe and affordable to boot. If you get the chance to attend, take it and enjoy the unbeatable combo of savings, opportunities and ego-boosting prestige!

Good luck!

the interview day is pretty relaxed. the interviews are open IIRC, so your interviewers will probably know a lot about you already.

both of mine had lists of points for discussion on my app. we mainly talked about those things.

hope that helps a little.

This might sound dumb but what does IIRC stand for? I assume "open file" or something like that.

I got an interview invite for today for 9/19, too. But I don't know when I was reviewed/complete

Any tips for the interview? 🙂 As a Texas resident, this school is my top choice!

No specific tips - the interviews are pretty laidback. They really just want to get to know who you are. You have no control over how you'd potentially fit into the incoming class, so I figure just be yourself and give them an honest impression of who you are, so they're considering the "real you." And make sure you know why you like Baylor and what you think you'd get out of being educated at Baylor vs another school. You've got a great MCAT and a great alma mater (they really like Texas residents who went to Ivies), so they'll like you on paper already.

Haha...I'm probably not going to get interviews at any of the places you will. I'm just not special enough! 😛 It would be nice though!

haha yea right... just be sure to introduce yourself as Berk

So....if I submitted my secondary app on 7/12, and it has already been reviewed according to the BCM website, am I to assume that I will not be getting an interview?? I noticed several people on that list submitted their app after me but have already received interview invitations....just curious so I don't get all neurotic. Thanks.

I don't think any of us are qualified to tell you whether or not that's true. You could e-mail the admissions office to ask, but they'll probably give you a really vague answer. My guess is that they review in batches and you'll be considered with the next batch, and the next batch, etc. Does anyone else have better insight into BCM's adcom?

i wouldn't assume anything. as i explained earlier, they take the applications as they come and rank them. invites are given to the top X people for interviews. you could totally get one later. it really depends.

i doubt you'll find out anything from the admissions office. just be patient. i submitted my secondary around the same time as you did last year and got an interview invite in october. i heard of people getting them much later than that too with an early submission.

Thanks Jolie, that will keep my neurotic tendencies down in the mean time...I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed 🙂

Question for anyone that knows:

is the Medical School Research Track only for students interested in bench research? Can epidemiologic/public health research be conducted too?

....the description is somewhat unclear

omg, i found 2 typos on my submitted secondary

omg, i found 2 typos on my submitted secondary

ahh...don't say things like that! I'm sure they won't notice.

Any consensus on what this means?

"Your application is complete and has been reviewed by the committee.
We will let you know something as soon as we are able."

I hope they are able to soon 😛.

Hey folks - I certainly done envy you guys, it was just 4 short years ago that I was in your shoes, and it's stressful as heck as you're wondering whether every little mistake you made is going to get you bumped. New BCM alum here to the rescue...

To saa09 - they won't notice. These are MDs, not historians or English professors - most of them can't spell worth cow poo, even the academics. And if they notice, they won't care. A typo can't be helped - it happens, you try to avoid it, but it's not going to be the thing that gets you rejected. If it makes you feel better, I had at least 1 typo in my AMCAS statement, and obviously I'm here and with my Baylor MD (and with a few other med school acceptances in hand as well)... you'll be fine.

To pinaola - it means the committee has reviewed your application, given it a score, and now you're going to be selected to interview. Unfortunately, with Baylor, it doesn't give you any information. I interviewed in December, got accepted 1 week later. Meanwhile, I know people who interviewed in September and didn't get accepted until May or June. There's probably some crazy game that they run that makes sense of all of this, but I would say just patiently wait, and if it gets to be January and you haven't heard anything and Baylor is *really* your top choice, give them a call.

Baylor's an incredible school - I was spoiled my interview day and couldn't look at any other "tippy-top-tier" school in a good light afterwards. I interviewed at 4 other schools that were also "top 10-ish" after I got my acceptance, ended up turning down a 5th because I realized I was blowing off the interviews. I wish y'all the best of luck, and if there is anything I can do to help you with your interview process or help you make your decisions (even if they're not pro-Baylor), I will try as much as i can. Good luck - once you get that first acceptance in hand, you will feel VERY empowered and a lot more in control of things. It'll happen!

Wait.. whaat?! Maybe I'm misreading your post, but couldn't that mean you could have been rejected as well?

Mine says:

Your application is complete and has been reviewed by the committee.
We will let you know something as soon as we are able.

Baylor College of Medicine interviews from September through February.
You are eligible for interview consideration through February

What's that mean!?! Stop playing with my emotions Baylor.. ahh

I can't say for sure, but my impression of the way the admissions process works is that each applicant gets a score that determines how high up he or she is on the list of possible interviewees. So if you have a really high score, you get an early interview. If you have a lower score, they'll wait until much later in the application season to interview you; if it's too low, they may never get around to you. "Reviewed" just means that your application has been given a score.

I apologize, I mistyped, and considering how on edge your emotions probably are, that's a crime against nature. It means that Baylor will consider you for an interview. We didn't have the notifications (at least I don't remember getting one) - as hard as it, you get to wait until the committee gives you your interview. I don't know why they offer interviews when they do, all I can tell you is I interviewed late-ish and got in a week later, and others in my graduating class interviewed on the first offered interview day and weren't accepted until May. Please try to relax - it's hell, but it's one of those situations outside of your control and trying to read into the letters sent to you will only give you an ulcer.

Head on to the Allopathic Class Threads forum for your very own BCM Class of 2013 thread! You can tap the current students for more information there too, as they will hang out there as well. Interested parties, applicants, interviewees, and acceptees are all welcome! Also, links to other class threads are in the first post.

lol no, no haha

I meant "Please stop playing with my emotions Baylor College of Medicine" not you BaylorLion. Sorry for the confusion lol. And thanks a lot for the insight!

can any current students tell me how the MD/MPH program works? i can't find anything on the website besides the fact that they're starting it this year with UTHSCH. How would one apply, besides stating it on the secondary?

i don't know all the specifics, but i do know that it requires an extra year of coursework.

you don't have to know definitively right now either. you will still have the opportunity to sign up as a first year. i think it's pretty much a "if you want it, you got it" type of deal.

yeah, im just confused as to if you check 'yes' on the MD/MPH option on the secondary what that means. is it a definite requirement to apply to the MPH? or more like "i'm interested"? Since they just announced it officially at the end of August I can't imagine they have everything worked out...

They said you should apply to UTSPH before August 1, 2009 if you want the dual degree. If you check yes on the secondary for MD/MPH and change your mind later, I don't think it will matter at all. Even if you start your first year in the dual program and decide later not to pursue the MPH, it won't matter. I hope that helps!

my (hopefully) last question before i submit: do you think it will look really bad if my numbers don't match for "how you paid for school" on AMCAS and the BCM secondary? i didn't calculate it right on AMCAS and i just now realized it.... 😱

thanks, i thought thats how it was since its like that for almost every other dual degree school 🙂

Not to sound rude, but be careful what you wish for. After seeing the amount of neurotic, competitive cutthroats there you may be singing a different tune after your first year.

Baylor has one of the most collaborative, supporting environments I've ever been a part of. It actually shocked me during my first year, b/c i expected the cut-throat pre-med environment most of us are used to. Fellow students send out more study guides than I can handle. We are continuously getting emails from older students eager to share their wisdom. it's a LEARNING environment... not one of dog eat dog.

yep - this is the first year that they are offering it, so things are still in the works. if you're interested, click the "yes" button on the supplementary.... it's not a commitment at all... just a way of letting someone related to the program know that you're considering it (so that they can contact you and give you more information, have a rough estimate for numbers, etc.)
