Does anyone know how many got wl/came off the wl last year? or usually? I really really loved Brown and would love to get in but I don't want to get my hopes up if it's not likely to happen
 
The 2nd look thread says that Brown's is May 8-9. Can anyone confirm this from their acceptance packet?
Incidentally, has anyone from the March 20th response group received their acceptance packet?
Good luck to everyone on the waitlist, I have also heard that it moves quite a lot. Also, letters of interest are really good at this point :luck: :luck: :luck:
 
Got a few questions for you guys:

1) Why isn't Brown a more popular school? I interviewed and got accepted and I am really thinking about attending (loved it there!), but the school seems to get bad rep on these boards..

2) What are your thoughts on Brown's future? Will this be an up-and-coming school? 10 years from now will Brown Med be amongst the top 20 schools in the nation?

3) Right now I am torn between Brown and Case Western. Case has the bigger name in medicine and has more resources, but I don't like its location. Brown has a bigger name for lay people but isn't as prestigious in medicine as Case Western (or is it?), but I sure do like Providence and the tight knit community Brown brings. If you were in my position, which would you choose? Finances are about the same for the two and I think I would be happy at either one...

premed thoughts:
1. People on these boards really seem to look down on Brown because of the PLME. Some (most?) SDNers think that just because PLMEs did not go through the competition of vying for med schools (never mind the competition to get INTO PLME), they won't be as good doctors.

2. Although Brown med students have not had spectacular USMLE scores until a couple of years ago (nothing to scoff at either), they've always matched really well, probably due to the great clinical education. In any case, the new dean has reduced the PLME program (every year) and introduced more and more standard admits. The board scores are rising and the match lists are just as good. Hence, Brown's stats are going up, which means their reputation is also rising (in fact, Brown's US news research rating rose to 31 from 38 👍 but its US news primary care rating went down to 23 from 16 because, along with the rest of the nation, fewer doctors are going into primary care 👎 ). In any case, the Brown administration certainly believes they are on the way up (and, although a lowly premed, the aforementioned reasons makes me think they are right).

3. Someone else on SDN said to do this: take a coin, assign a side to each school and flip. If your heart wrenches when you see the result, go to the other school. <- this is a very efficient, elegant solution 🙂

Dr. J, I understand your dilemma. I'm in at Brown, and also deciding between Brown and other schools, though my decision is complicated by other factors that I don't want to go into here.

When I went for my interview at Brown, I really loved it. Honestly, what impressed me the most about the school was the students--literally every single one I met was intelligent, well spoken, warm, interesting, and, get this, normal. It felt like the kind of place where people discuss intelligent things, but they also have a life and aren't obsessed with their careers. I loved the personal attention I feel that you get there, which I suspect shines during the clinical rotations especially. I don't know why PLMEs get a bad rep- I don't personally know any of them, but my guess is you must be able to walk on water to get into that program. As somebody else mentioned, the Dean seems to be scaling down the % of the class with PLMEs and increasing the number of standard route students. All the other interviewees I met that day were impressive.

Personally, I checked out Case last summer when I happened to be in the area, and immediately took it off my list of schools to apply. Cleveland? First of all--and I really hate this--you need a car to get anywhere. I infinitely prefer to walk/bike, and I love the feeling of a small city rather than a spread out landscape of disconnected neighborhoods. Providence seems like a much more pleasant and comfortable place to live. And Case just didn't seem exciting to me.

To be honest, though, for you, I think ultimately your decision should be one of location, if in your mind all else is equal. If you look at Brown's match list, it is absurdly impressive (admittedly to my pre-med eyes) in the Northeast. If you want to live or get a residency anywhere from Boston to, say, Phili, I think Brown will carry you much further in that regard. If you want to settle in the Midwest, I suppose Case would get a slight edge, if any.

Hi Slade,

This is what I was able to find on the website:

Individuals who have been offered admission to the first-year class receive award notifications by April 1 if their files are completed by March 3. All other aid applicants whose applications are complete on April 15 receive award notifications in mid-May. Applicants who do not meet the April 15 deadline are notified shortly after their applications become complete, beginning in late May.

I don't think I could wait till May! :laugh:
 
so... i got my finaid package, and 🙁 the base lown increased from $28200 to $33200 because of the economy!
That's $5000 less...
 
What do you mean the base loan? I didn't get one in my package...

the base loan means this:
Take the overall cost of attendance (COA)
COA = $62,880 for Class of 2013, 1st year
substract your family contribution (say $20,000), that is your assessed need:
assessed need = $62,880 - $20,000 = $42,880
Substract from that the base loan, $33,200 (that is the minimum that Brown has decided students can take out):
$42,880 - $33,200 = $9,680
That would be the scholarship that Brown would give you ($9,680).
However, this does not mean you will only take loans out for the base loan. If, like most students, your parents are not helping you pay medical school, you will have to max out your subsidized and unsubsidized stafford loan to cover the family contribution.

I called the admissions office a couple of weeks ago, and they said that there is usually some movement in early May.
 
Does anyone know if the wait list is ranked? I noticed it says in my wait list e-mail that: "We have placed your name on the wait list. This list includes applicants to whom we will give first consideration in the event openings occur in the upcoming months." Don't want to give myself false hope.
 
Mine says the same thing, I don't think it means anything special but I sure wish it did!

Mine also has the same wording. I have noticed a trend in other threads. It seems that the current economic downturn is influencing prospective medical students to opt for state medical schools and other schools that are a cheaper alternative to those that are highly priced. Hopefully, this means that there will be more people accepted from Brown's wait-list this year. :xf:

Yes, Dean Weiss said something along those lines stating he anticipates more movement due to the economic crisis. I sure hope there's a lot of movement since I don't mind paying whatever Brown wants me to pay. I just love this school!!

I hope we hear some news soon! I am in the midst of final exams, but all I can think about is being on this waitlist (since october) and the May 15th deadline for accepted students to pick one school 🙄

I withdrew from Brown yesterday. It was incredibly hard for me to make that call, but I hope that one of you waitlisters gets my spot! Lots of luck! Brown is phenomenal.

Regarding last year's cycle, one person posted that they were accepted on 5/23, but the activity of Brown applicant's was even lower than this year's thread (we are on page 4 while other threads exceed 15), so its hard to discern if that is when movement really started, or if the person was just accepted later on.

I'm not sure as to what the mode of communication is but the person who posted in the Class of 2011 thread was accepted off the waitlist via telephone call.
 
Just to let you guys know, I met someone at Second Look who was accepted the day before (May 7th) from the waitlist.

What happened to him was that he received an email from Barbara asking if he was still interested. Then, she called him to offer a spot in the class.

Inauspicious news haha. I hope the waitlist movement isn't already over, with SDN applicants not being made any offers. There should be vacancies due to people who dropped acceptances on May 15h. Hopefully, we will hear back tomorrow, probably next week at the latest.

does anyone know how much time is given to respond when offered a spot off the waitlist? that could play a factor in how soon we hear about more movement.

and is there any sort of ranking or way to know how likely a person would come off the list?
 
I got an e-mail from Barbara today and then a phone call offering me a position in the class..

One week to make a decision but I think there are still spots available so don't give up hope
 
I was accepted off the wait-list at my top choice and have just withdrawn from Brown's wait-list. Good luck to everyone!
 
i just spoke with barbara and she told me there's been a lot of waitlist activity lately, so just gotta be patient and see what happens.
 
anyone heard anything lately? do you guys think theres still spots left?
