hey, so I was talking to a professor of mine. Her daughter went to columbia med (just graduated) and just started her surgery residency at downstate. She was telling me how 6 people did not match into a residency AT ALL this past year because they have a residency match director (or however they are called) who has only a couple of years of experience and because the residency programs dont know her well enough, some people didnt match... that makes me a little worries....

haha thats a good point... and that she would have more years of expereince by the time we graduate. lol. it was just a little ... anxiety-provoking to hear this lol

lol yeahh... long road ahead of us! one step at a time!

I've noticed there tends to be a telephone effect with these kinds of things... I've heard other horror stories about a few other top schools too...

I wonder to what extent this really is true? That would be good to know.

I disagree about getting into med school first... the applicant should be as educated as the schools in this process...

Did the professor say anything else?

Maybe, but I don't think who the residency match director for a school is will weigh very heavily on my decision of where to go. It seems like the amount of work you put into med school would be much more important in deciding where you match.

Any current med students have any thoughts on this?

The only reason I said worry about getting in first...is because this is Columbia we are talking about. There are so many factors that work in favor for a Columbia med student that it makes up its deficiency in other aspects. Besides, you won't need to worry about matching for another few years.

The only thing that would immediately make me concern is either the financial state of a school, accreditation status, affiliations etc etc. But yeah, this is Columbia we're talking about! 😛

How can I check if my application is complete? Thanks

Thanks for the info guys. About how long did it take from when you sent in your pic to when you were complete? I sent my pic in about two weeks ago so I'm starting to get a little worried lol.

i waited almost a month i believe..

I just got my interview invite in the mail today for October 6. Is this late to be receiving notice for such an early interview? I feel like this is sort of rushed for a pre-9/15 interview...

You just got an interview invite to columbia...no complaining! I'll take the 10/6 date off your hands if you'd like 😀

Nonononono, mine mine mine mine. Did I mention MINE! I'm super-excited, I just was wondering if maybe this was the result of someone else canceling? Maybe my first letter got lost in the mail and they sent a second one when I didn't respond? I'm just trying to figure out the timing is all...

It's not that late, you've got a couple weeks. You can call to reschedule I believe.

I was wondering if people who are familiar with the area around Columbia have any suggestions about where to stay. I don't really know NYC so any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

You got the invite via snail mail? With a set date? Odd...I got mine via e-mail with no mention of available dates whatsoever. Silly them.

With this stress, I doubt I will survive this year. I got an email from Columbia today claiming that they had sent me a snail mail interview invite on 9/8 and were waiting for my confirmation for an interview on 10/1. I recently moved, had changed my address on AMCAS, and had told the old roommates to be on the lookout. Nothing. I thought I was being super paranoid by reminding them to look for mail for me, which I guess was justified. But I called Columbia, apologized, and rescheduled for a later date so that I have time to make arrangements. So take note: Contact them directly if you change your address, don't count on an AMCAS-change. I can't believe I almost missed out on the interview. I am SO excited to go and visit the school!!

I had the email but still haven't received the letter. Might be your friendly neighborhood mailman who failed.

um...I've only visited Columbia Medical center (assuming that's where the interview is and not at the main campus) a few times and don't remember seeing any types of hotel near there. Most hotels in NYC are downtown around 42nd or 59th, but they are very expensive. It's fairly easy to get to the medical center by subway so anywhere in Manhattan should be fine.

👍 Any hotel in Manhattan will work.

I used to work at NYP Columbia Hospital. If I were you, I'd stay downtown, but make sure you're on the east side of Manahattan so that you're near the 1, 2 or 3 subway line.

Now that I think about it, the A/D train may also stop at the hospital so you could stay closer to midtown and still be only one train away.

Be careful to study the subway map a day ahead of time. Not all of the red (1,2,3) or blue (A,D) lines go all the way to 168th.

don't you mean the west side of Manhattan?

Thank you--yes, I meant the West Side. I'd just finished reading the Mt. Sinai thread and hadn't mentally moved crosstown yet.
Thanks.

One night when I got stuck in the city, I stayed at a Day's Inn near 96th and Broadway. As I remember, it was less than $150, but it was three years ago. If the trains are moving, it shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes to get to 168th from there.

thats a pretty ideal location

So I called yesterday and scheduled my interview for 10/8 (yay! 😀). The admissions officer on the phone told me that she would email me a confirmation and also include the lunch menu. I still haven't received such an email. For those of you who called to schedule, how soon did you get a confirmation email? If I don't hear from her tomorrow then I'll send them an email on Monday to confirm the appointment.

I feel so out of the loop since I don't know anything about my interview day except that it's at 10 am. I tried to find more information on their website but to no avail.

did you get it by snail mail?

man,,, why no love columbia??

did you get it by snail mail?

No. I think that they've stopped doing snail mail invites (the last several reported here have been via email). I got a (really short) email from someone in admissions that said to call a number to schedule my interview. I called and requested an interview on 10/8 - she said that would be fine and then she said she'd send email me a confirmation and a lunch menu. That was on Wednesday and that's the last I've heard from them. My interview is a week from next Wednesday, so I want to make sure I have everything planned out in advance... I'll probably email admissions if I don't hear anything by tomorrow afternoon.

I was told that my file would be reviewed in mid-September, and I haven't heard anything yet.
So, I emailed admin today and got this reply (very quickly):

The Committee has just returned and have started to review applicant files. As soon as they review your application, you will hear from us.

Sincerely,
P&S Admissions

Maybe this means that a new round of invites is near?
I hope so.

check out my mdapps 🙂 i give a break down of the day there lol

Hmm... I was just rereading past posts, and I've noticed this seems like a very disorganized process. Some people get an email invite first, some get a letter first, some with a date, some without.

In any case, looks like a lot of us will be interviewing this coming week. Judging by the interview feedback thread, we are the first round this season! :luck::luck::luck::luck::luck:

i am so so so so SO happy to get this interview.. sad i will not have a tour and lunch before my interview, but thats ok. I can do it later. just so happy for the chance 🙂

Ok, so I'm asking this here, because when I called the admissions office during the week, noone was picking up.
I expected to submit my Columbia secondary over a month ago, I even sent them my LOR, but for certain reasons I couldn't actually complete it till now. Does anyone know how likely it is that Columbia kept my LOR or do I have to resend them?

I suspect they will have kept your LOR. They started a file for you with your AMCAS, so why would they disregard your LOR? Not that I actually know. You could always call to check.

Hey, for people going to interviews, is there anything that we are supposed to bring? I misplaced my invitation letter!

Complete today finally. sent everything in at the end of august. lol
