what happened to my app! columbia is taking so long 🙁
hey, so I was talking to a professor of mine. Her daughter went to columbia med (just graduated) and just started her surgery residency at downstate. She was telling me how 6 people did not match into a residency AT ALL this past year because they have a residency match director (or however they are called) who has only a couple of years of experience and because the residency programs dont know her well enough, some people didnt match... that makes me a little worries....
I've noticed there tends to be a telephone effect with these kinds of things... I've heard other horror stories about a few other top schools too...
I wonder to what extent this really is true? That would be good to know.
I disagree about getting into med school first... the applicant should be as educated as the schools in this process...

Did the professor say anything else?
How can I check if my application is complete? Thanks

i waited almost a month i believe..
I just got my interview invite in the mail today for October 6. Is this late to be receiving notice for such an early interview? I feel like this is sort of rushed for a pre-9/15 interview...
You just got an interview invite to columbia...no complaining! I'll take the 10/6 date off your hands if you'd like 😀

when were you complete? With this stress, I doubt I will survive this year. I got an email from Columbia today claiming that they had sent me a snail mail interview invite on 9/8 and were waiting for my confirmation for an interview on 10/1. I recently moved, had changed my address on AMCAS, and had told the old roommates to be on the lookout. Nothing. I thought I was being super paranoid by reminding them to look for mail for me, which I guess was justified. But I called Columbia, apologized, and rescheduled for a later date so that I have time to make arrangements. So take note: Contact them directly if you change your address, don't count on an AMCAS-change. I can't believe I almost missed out on the interview. I am SO excited to go and visit the school!!

I was wondering if people who are familiar with the area around Columbia have any suggestions about where to stay. I don't really know NYC so any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

um...I've only visited Columbia Medical center (assuming that's where the interview is and not at the main campus) a few times and don't remember seeing any types of hotel near there. Most hotels in NYC are downtown around 42nd or 59th, but they are very expensive. It's fairly easy to get to the medical center by subway so anywhere in Manhattan should be fine.
I used to work at NYP Columbia Hospital. If I were you, I'd stay downtown, but make sure you're on the east side of Manahattan so that you're near the 1, 2 or 3 subway line.
Now that I think about it, the A/D train may also stop at the hospital so you could stay closer to midtown and still be only one train away.
Be careful to study the subway map a day ahead of time. Not all of the red (1,2,3) or blue (A,D) lines go all the way to 168th.
thats a pretty ideal locationThank you--yes, I meant the West Side. I'd just finished reading the Mt. Sinai thread and hadn't mentally moved crosstown yet.
Thanks.
One night when I got stuck in the city, I stayed at a Day's Inn near 96th and Broadway. As I remember, it was less than $150, but it was three years ago. If the trains are moving, it shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes to get to 168th from there.
So I called yesterday and scheduled my interview for 10/8 (yay! 😀). The admissions officer on the phone told me that she would email me a confirmation and also include the lunch menu. I still haven't received such an email. For those of you who called to schedule, how soon did you get a confirmation email? If I don't hear from her tomorrow then I'll send them an email on Monday to confirm the appointment.
I feel so out of the loop since I don't know anything about my interview day except that it's at 10 am. I tried to find more information on their website but to no avail.
I wish....
Hi Dienekes!
chad5871, it'll probably take a day or two. The admissions office is probably pretty busy...

check out my mdapps 🙂 i give a break down of the day there lolThe same day as NYU? how did you set that up? I dont have a columbia invite yet, but I'm just thinking ahead 😉
Ok, so I'm asking this here, because when I called the admissions office during the week, noone was picking up.
I expected to submit my Columbia secondary over a month ago, I even sent them my LOR, but for certain reasons I couldn't actually complete it till now. Does anyone know how likely it is that Columbia kept my LOR or do I have to resend them?
