Does Columbia send out pre-interview rejections before March? I just happened to see on the rejections thread that people have been rejected...is there a way to check this? Do you literally just call and ask?

i believe columbia wiats until march to send out any and all decisions.

Some have gotten a rejection notice as a response to an "in the area" email or phone call. I think someone else said they called to get the status on their application and were told of their rejection.

what if a guy/girl from cornell begins dating a guy/girl from columbia? Do they both get kicked out?

They actually cannot date because there's a big size difference down there.
They JUST DON'T FIT!

Actually, I know someone who has gotten an email rejection from Columbia...so they have already started to send those out.

Really?? Hm maybe I haven't been rejected yet then! I really don't get why there isn't a standard online status system..if schools like Penn and Michigan can keep you up-to-date on your exact (or as best they can) status, why can't every school? What do they do with the $80-100 secondary fees (with 6000 apps, that's about $600,000 wtf!!?)

good question. I can only imagine them depositing it in their offshore accounts in Grand Cayman.

Hey chad..where did you find that the letters Dean Frantz sends out in response to thank you letters do not really mean anything? I interviewed at the beginning of October and just got a letter from him saying "Although we do not send out official decision letters until March 1st, your chances of acceptance are very good. May I also add that it would give me great pleasure to you have you as a student at P & S in the fall"

It just seems evil to send that out and then still possibly reject in March...

Is that word for word what he said. Did he say very good or excellent? Did he use the term personal pleasure rather than just great pleasure. If it does, I got the same letter 😛

Maybe they are sending those letters to people that they do plan on accepting to ensure that they don't withdraw from the school if they got into another great school. I'm just guessing though. I guess if anyone from the past year got this letter and was later accepted or rejected, it would help determine what this letter means.

Dean Frantz and his letters have been a source of speculation and debate on SDN for years. From searching the forums, I come to three conclusions.

1) There were several formats from previous years with slight difference in phrasing.

2) No letter phrasing ensured you a spot, but SDN polls seemed to suggest that some phrasing was better than others.

3) The letter format this year seems to be a tad different, from what was mentioned above at least. What I have read in old post was basically that Dean Frantz would write "strongly in mind" "very much in mind" etc, rather than "your chances are ...."

I have heard accusations that the whole letter thing is just propaganda to keep Columbia on your mind, but I prefer to believe that the letters are sincere. The bottom line is, even if Dean Frantz loved you, he still is only one part of the interview process. Granted, he probably has more clout to sway the ADCOM than most members, but in the end the ADCOM as a whole decides who to accept/waitlist.

For those who got interviews/interviewed already - stop guessing on dean frantz letter and let everything play out.

for the REST OF US, where worrying is warranted, is there anyone here that did not receive an interview invite nor rejection and is worrying their pants off??

Yea, I don't want to read too much into what each phrasing means, but I'm probably also going to write a thank you letter.:xf:

Just do a search in this forum for old Columbia secondary threads or do a search for the terms "Columbia" and "Frantz." It's been debated here for years, and you can be accepted/waitlisted/rejected after receiving any variation of the response.

MS2 here. I remember the letter debate, and honestly I don't think there is much to it. I never received a Frantz letter after my interview or even after my pre-decision letter of intent, and yet I got the big packet come early March. I also know several people who did get one who were waitlisted, accepted, rejected. I don't know how they decide who gets a letter, but I'm pretty sure it's meaningless. G'luck everyone!

Thanks for the info!

Will you put in a good word for me? 😉 I'm praying for a big packet come March...

For those of you who sent "in the area" e-mails, how soon before your requested date did Columbia get back to you? I sent my "in the area" e-mail well over a month ago and...no response...

I think you can call to find out if a decision has been made on your application.

I called just a moment ago re: my own application and they may be making the decision this week 😱.

We'll see what happens...

yep, i've been complete since mid sept also and no peep from them.

Interview at Columbia!!!!! WOoohoo!!!!

Congrats! When were you complete again? And how did they inform you of your interview? Email?

what did you say when you called?

what did you say when you called?

I said I had sent in an e-mail about a month ago about being in the area this week, and had Columbia made a decision on my application yet?

I was told that the committee was in the process of making a decision on my application.

15 minutes later I got an invitation. [That's the condensed version]

Good luck!

Oh, boo. I got a reply so I don't think they would look too favorably on me calling. Congrats anyway!

This gives me hope that I have not been silently rejected, as I too was marked complete in early October and I sent them an in the area email and got no response. Perhaps I will call them too.

Thanks...you could try calling anyway 😕. Just to see if a decision has been made on your application. I feel like that's a fair question so long as you don't call three times a month (which I'm assuming you haven't).

From the conversation I had on the phone, it seems like they *are* able to look up the status of *some* applications at this point (I don't think this was the case back in November).

Anyway, good luck either way.

I called.

"We don't do status check on the phone you have to wait for an email"

🙁

yep that's exactly wut she told me when i caleld today too.. i wonder if it depends on who's answering the phone...

OK, nvm. Several people have PMed me that calling for a decision has not resulted in a very happy admissions office.

Never mind, then. Don't call 😳.

They were super nice back in September. You guys ruined it 😛

It's such a knockoff of Penn's....Yay Penn...screw Columbia (unless you give me an interview )

I just got the complete email after submitting everything back in mid-late september🙄

anyone know if Columbia's closed for these 3 days or they're still sending out invites?

Congrats to those who have received good news thus far!

Just received the "you are complete" email, too, though I submitted in late September. Wonder if they "tier" the applicants before the Committee votes to invite for interview. In any case, the email says I should be notified "promptly" if the Committe decides that they would like to interview me. I suppose it means if I don't hear from them by year's end, I can cross them off my list. No idea whether they are closed for these three days, though since I received an email at about 11 AM CST this morning, I assume they were open at least until then.

Good luck to everyone, and to those of you who are in my shoes (or who have still not received a "complete" email), here's hoping for the best....

All is not lost if you don't hear from them by the new year. It took admissions about a month and a half from my complete email to invite me for an interview. Personally I wouldn't consider that "prompt" notification, but I guess they do!

I was complete since 9/25 and still haven't heard back from them, but I agree with you in terms of Columbia tiering their applicants or else they would have rolling admissions. I think it's safe to say that for the most part they've interviewed the high tier profilers and are now sieving thru the mid/low tiers for the new year.

Like you said, here's to hoping. cheers.!

hey, for those of you that just got interview invites, when did you send in your secondary? i've been complete for about a month and i'm anxious! although i know it's probably still too soon =/

Well I was complete 12/3 and got an invite via snail mail yesterday.

I had planned to drive out to Iowa (a pseudo-vacation/roadtrip), but that is definitely not a good idea now that I have to be back for an interview at Columbia 2 days later. I know driving is definitely out of the question, but I am not sure if flying there then back to NYC is a good idea either. Should I reschedule an interview to give myself more time to travel back and forth?

ive been complete since sept 12th and no news... 🙁

anotherface.. why nto call and ask? but would it be impossible for you to make the date that they gave you already?
