I believe you get a Pin from the AMCAS CBC email, and then you use it when you get an email from the company that is actually doing the background check. Don't freak out.
I did not receive a PIN in my AMCAS CBC email. Is there a second email from AAMC about the CBC, which will include the PIN?

Yes, there will be an email from Certiphi. The PIN referenced above I beleive was for the status check for UIC, not for the CBC. For CBC wait for an email from Certiphi, as stated in the AMCAS email re: CBC.

When does orientation start?

I don't know why I check my status everyday.......Applicant in Process since forever...................................🙁

I live just 35 minutes west of Chicago, I got the "Final Decision made on 11/20" and the AMCAS background check e-mail the next day, but Heston how did you get your large envelope and I didn't yet?! Should I be worried?? I have already told friends and family I'm in and I really better be!!

No, I wouldn't base it on that at all. I bet we'll see something Monday or Tuesday

anybody with a final decision made on 11-21-08 and no cbc email yet?

i have final decision made 11-20-08 and got the AMCAS email 11/21 (but still nothing from Certiphi)

it might take AMCAS a day to process things, so if your decision was made Friday my guess would be AMCAS will get to you on Monday

Thanks! I'm still scared though...they did say they would either give acceptances and/or just keep reviewing you at my interview...
does anyone else have a 11/21 decision made in this forum? or am I the only one?

I live at the very edge of Chicago (just before the suburbs) and I got the change of status and AAMC email Friday. The envelope came the next day (11/22).
I think the mailing system is messed up in that it depends on when the school puts the letter in the mail. Because the accpetances were actually given out Thursday (the day of the meeting), it depends when the letters are placed in the mailbox. If it was late Thursday, then everyone around the Chicago area should have received the letters on Saturday. Howver, if the letters went into the system mid-day Friday, then it is possible that the postal system seperated the mail into "Chicago" and "Not Chicago" and this could cause a delay.

I wouldn't worry at all. I think i just got lucky.

Agreed.

Don't worry guys, you'll get the envelopes!!!! If you got Decision made AND CBC, you are kosher.

So for those of us that interviewed in Peoria and would rather chew off their left arm then attend medical school there, can someone describe what Chicago's curriculum, student-life, and so on is like?

Does UIC do a second look weekend? Kindof at a disadvantage since you interview at one campus but will potentially go to another you've never seen.

I can share my experience with the Chicago campus but I am sure there are others who spent more than a day there like I did.

Curriculum - The curriculum changes every year as they have a very active curriculum review committee. So the curriculum this year is different than the curriculum that the M2 who interviewed me took, so even she couldn't tell me a lot about it. From what it sounds like, it is still separate classes for all of the basic sciences but they are organized in a way that allows you a better integration of information. The first semester we'll have a test every single Monday. That's right... (They said they did this to teach students how to study and not procrastinate.) Then second semester it is just a midterm test and then finals...

Student life- it seemed to me that you can get whatever you want out of this. If you enjoy bar hopping/partying it seems like there is a large group of students who do this every Monday night post test. Like I said in a previous post the average age of the entering medical school class is around 22. There also seems like there is a great deal of stuff on campus, everybody knows everybody even if not that well. There were also some people who commuted from the suburbs and have families. So you shouldn't have a problem finding a group that meets your social needs.

From past threads, I dont think that UIC has a second look weekend, but that could be wrong. I'd be happy to answer any other specific questions you may have about the Chicago campus as best I can having spend only a day and a half there.

Something they did mention is the huge alumni list. My interview tour guide went to UC Davis, and lived in a small town somewhere in northern california and he was able to find multipe UIC grads to shadow when he went home for the holidays. UIC has been around almost 125 years and a huge graduating class so they really played up the alumni relations. The gym is really nice, looks very new and well stocked. They had two indoor tracks, one for walking and one for running as well as tons of cardio. Students said that if you wanted to hang out with the professors working out in the morning was a great way to get to know a lot of them because they were there working out!

The student center is right across the street and very nice, has a subway, coffee shop, cafeteria, etc. The building was old, but no worse than any old school in the US. The classroom looked like it had comfy seats in it along with some really good projectors. Finally, the anatomy lab. I was really impressed with the Anatomy lab. It is on the 7th floor which is VERY unique, and it has lots of windows. There is an awesome view and it will make a huge difference in your first year being able to see the outside world during the many hours spent in anatomy lab. They also bring in specialists for each are of the body during anatomy. IE, while doing the abdomen they bring in a bunch of general surgeons, etc.

All in all I thought it seemed like a great school, with AMAZING clinical experiences. Over 10 affiliated hospitals for you to do rotations in from rich suburb hotels to VA's to University medical centers. If I can help out with anything else I'd be happy to!

Congrats!

Do you guys think we will get our first choice if that campus is still not full? Or is there more to it like where they think would be best for you?

so congrats guys!
I just checked my mail and saw that I got a small white letter--I guess that's a post-interview rejection.
very sad I must say, I'm depressed. Again i don't understand all this when they had said they don't do early rejection during my interview session.

From what i heard it is fist come first serve basis. so you might get ur first choice if you have an early acceptance

I dont know if they have a second look day, but i know that if you ask them and tell them that you are in the area and you wanted to know if you could participate in the tour of an interview day they shouldnt have a problem with it.

From what I gathered if you are in the November batch you should definitely get your pick of the campuses. Also the December batch should mostly get their choice. Chicago starts to fill up for the January acceptance batch I believe.

Congrats!

Thanks for this -- great info. How big is the class? Is it competitive? Is the class cohesive? Are people friendly?

oh no!! i'm so sorry to hear that. this process is such a crapshoot, but there's still months and months left in the season so plenty of time to get good news from somewhere else. you got a final decision but no email from AMCAS?

Thanks for this -- great info. How big is the class? Is it competitive? Is the class cohesive? Are people friendly?

Again I'll answer as best I can!

Big the class- Sounds like it is right around 175 people, fairly typical for a medical school class.

Competitive - Yes and no... From what I heard it is all Pass/Fail and Honors... So they said the vast majority of the people just work hard to pass and don't worry about honors and therefore it is not very competitive. Also, they don't grade on a curve really, they have a standardized bank of questions and they know the difficulty of those so they can put together a test where 70 is passing, ya know? And in order to pass the course you have to pass over all not each test individually.

Cohesive - It really seemed like it while I was there, seemed like everyone knew everyone. Hard to really judge this because it is class dependent IE our class may be more cohesive then the current one, or less. But one of the people said that every single person had been to at least one of the Monday night parties to celebrate the tests being over so I guess that means something right?

Friendly - All the people I met absolutely were, both students and staff. Everyone was amazing actually...

I was really impressed by the staff, and the students who came and ate dinner with us. All very helpful, friendly and passionate about UIC. A couple that I talked to that were from California were excited to get back there for residency but said they didn't regret coming out this way for medical school at all.

Hope this helps a little! It is really hard to make a campus decision, especially from OOS if you've only interviewed in one place. Luckily I interviewed in Chicago and am fairly certain I will pick it. If you have any other specific questions feel free to ask or PM me.

Based on his previous posts he said the he did not 🙁

Sorry to hear it but there is still plenty of time!

Thanks everyone for assuaging my fears. hopeful - so sorry to hear. I interviewed 11/12 so I might have met you that day and I wish you the very best in this process. All it takes is that one acceptance and you'll forget about this. You'll be fine... try to enjoy your holidays.

thanks all..
I guess since it was my first interview I was betting a lot on it...and now I'm not sure if I'll get another interview...
do you think I should go to the carib?

thanks all..

Hey there, I'd apply to D.O. schools right now. Any US D.O. school is better than a Caribbean M.D. school, in my opinion. You aren't late at all for D.O. schools so perhaps look into them now and start talking to your advisor, family and friends. Also, don't lose hope for more interviews because who do you think the spring interviewees are? They are regular applicants like you and me. I know plenty of people who have gotten in who interviewed in spring. Be depressed a bit longer but then get back on your feet. All the best to you once again :xf:

Hopeful. I know your pain, frustration, and disappointment. I spent the last two years struggling to figure out what to do with my life. After college I took the MCAT in August but didn't go so hot. Not sure how things would turn out, I applied anyway and eventually got waitlisted at Rosalind Franklin University. The most agonizing year. 18 rejections in total and empty handed.

I was so dejected. I thought, maybe i should just become a doctor by any means, apply to the Carribean or maybe do an SMP program. I got accepted at both, but I felt like I was doing those for the wrong reasons. I was trying to force the issue and possibly rack up more dept than I would need to.

Rather than do either of those options, I retook the MCAT and did better, volunteered in an ER, worked at a non profit called World Relief, and then as an medical assistant. With all that behind my belt, I decided to apply one more time - apply for the one school I wanted to go to which was UIC.

Yesterday all my determination, hard work, 2 years waiting trying to understand my life, and prayer culminated into one big envelope. Basically what i'm trying to say is, don't lose hope. Fight hard, work towards what you want to do. If you do really want to go to the Caribbean, the more power to you. However, if you're going there as a last ditch effort, step back, take a breath, and remember that many other people have applied more than once and been accepted to an MD school in the US.

Seconded with all of my being. I got C's, C+'s and so on in most of my core biology and chemistry classes. That said, I put everything into my last two years of college (even going abroad, so I lost a semester of GPA) and into kicking ass in my masters program and I pulled through. It can be done -- make a plan, see what needs fixing, and start addressing it right away. Applications are always right around the corner, and it simply takes time (even with all the desire in the world) to fix whatever is amiss.

And I can't seriously stress this enough. It may feel like your life is about to end because nothing is going the way you want - trust me I got incredibly depressed at times - but one, two, or even three years of struggling in order to do what you want to do with the rest of your life is merely just a drop in the bucket compared to our actual lifespans. Like Migm said, make a plan, plow through, and you'll eventually find what's best catered to your needs.

Once I get the big envelope in the mail I'll share the details of my story, but it took a LOT of hardwork to get to where I am, to make up for my past mistakes and now that I have a MD acceptance I am SO glad that I didn't attend SGU 3 years ago when I was accepted, I would have graduated from medical school in a few months but from the Caribbean and I am really glad I waited.

I'll post the details of my story in a few days, until then, keep working hard and I second the DO applications!! Fill them out ASAP!!

BTW- I don't feel like going back and searching but earlier we were talking about in state status for married students who start off as OOS. I called and personally spoke with the guy who decides residency classification for all of the UI medical system and he said that if your married and your spouse works full time you can establish residency.

If any of you married OOSer's have questions you can PM me and I can tell you more about what he said!

so congrats guys!

Sorry to hear that, but youve got a long time to go before all the interview are handed out. Just out of curiousity were you in state or out of state?

I honestly appreciate the stories guys. I think I need to hear some fairy tale endings at this point..

I don't have any interviews let alone any acceptances..I feel beyond depressed and I just question why I worked so hard when it probably won't pay off at this point..

Sigh..

/end emo rant.

When I went on an October interview I was talking to two students who BOTH told me that their only interviews came in February and March. There's still time!!!! :luck::luck: Also check out the low GPA threads and the low MCAT threads, there's a bunch of inspiring stories of there.

I am a re-applicant and I believe I got in this time (still waiting for the official letter) and I too wanted to give up. I believe failure in anything and in this case, not getting into a school will only make you stronger and test your commitment to medicine. If you are committed, you'll do what you can to improve your application and reapply again next June. It stinks but you'll come out a better person if you persevere and re-evaluate your decision in pursuing a career in medicine.

My status page finally shows "Additional Correspondence: 11/24". I got the "Final Decision made on 11/20" and CBC e-mail the next morning (Friday) and now this. Does this mean UIC just mailed me (hopefully) the acceptance packet this morning? If so, if I live 35 minutes west of Chicago, think it'll get here this afternoon? 😛 I'm keeping my fingers crossed it really is an acceptance!

OHHHHHH! Me too, me too! I hope my official acceptance letter comes in today too! 😀

Wow, you guys have confidence in the USPS. If indeed UIC mailed it today, I would not expect it until tomorrow at the earliest. I am in the same boat - final decision on 11/20, CBC on 11/21, and additional correspondence today. I live in Aurora and even though it seems like mail should be able to travel 35 miles in one day, remember, this is the United States Post Office at work.

me three me threeeeeeeeeeee

got it in suburbs outside philly this morning

Official congrats to you Dale!!! What does your "Additional correspondence" date say? Mine says 11/24 so I guess mine just went in the mail today...

True. I didn't think about that. I was thinking it would come today because some people received letters last Friday and Saturday and that maybe UIC just updated the additional correspondence being sent out today. I don't know. It sure would be nice to receive it today though!

Heston, you got your letter already, right? What date is listed on your status page next to "Additional Correspondence"?

Hey guys.

I'm glad someone brought up the topic of "Additional Correspondence"".

I interviewed on October 2 and was accepted on October 24. Naturally, i sent in my intent letter and deposit as fast as humanly possible. And then today, one month later, I suddenly notice this Additional Correspondence on my status screen. I thought that I had done something wrong with regards to accepting the admission offer [the excitement and stress of going to medical school can make a person paranoid sometimes]. I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one getting this "Additional Correspondence" thing on our status page because it makes me think that every applicant may get this and not because I did something terribly wrong.

For anyone who has gotten the "Additional Correspondence" letter in the mail, what does it say?

Well, my faith in USPS was not misplaced! Got my roommate to check the mail on his lunch break and I got in! Praise God! 🙂
