i was interviewed dec. 1 and my status just changed to decision pending. i think that is the next stage all of the applicants that are up for review go through next. on dec. 18/19, our statuses should change reflecting an acceptance (final decision has been made) or something else (waitlist/rejection....wording that i do not know).

do not stress, patience is important.....i find passing the time goes well when studying for finals, drinking good wine, and eating oreos with chocolate milk. not in that order.

So I am pretty sure it is my neurosis kicking in but I have a question. I interviewed Nov 19th and they said they will not be reviewing us until the december meeting next week.

I am assuming that decision pending couldnt possibly mean they magically reviewed me and passed me up already right??

Just typing this makes me feel silly/nauseous seeing as this is my top choice!

Any kind of advise would help right about now...

Everyone's status page says "decision pending" after they interview but before they are reviewed. Don't sweat it... it's just normal. If November's pattern holds, you should be reviewed next Thursday. My experience was that I checked my status page all day on Thursday and my status changed from "Decision pending" to "Final decision made on 11/20" and then Friday morning, I received the AMCAS background check e-mail, then I received my acceptance packet Monday. Some people received their packet Saturday. I know that the waiting sucks, especially since you've been waiting since the last meeting to hear... but what's another week then right? Good luck to you!

You guys are soooooo awesome. Thank you, I am back to reality. I am just going to get more intimate with my wii until my next psychotic episode.

Thanks again for the quick reply. I really need that reality check.

I did not get a decision pending...I interviewed on the 25th.

I did not get a decision pending...I interviewed on the 25th.

have you checked your status today? maybe it will change on thursday.....those silly maintenance tue/thur might switch your status to decision pending and kablooie, you'll end up with an acceptance.

does anyone know how the adcom makes these decisions??? do they sit in a room mulling over interviewed applicants and then pick a few dozen or so for acceptances? i would love to see the actual process/discussions.

The consensus is that if your message turns from decision pending to final decision made on xx/xx/xx, then you have most likely been accepted. My status changed the actual day of the admissions meeting, while some have had their status change the day after. If your status remains "Decision Pending" after the meeting, while others have had their status change to "Final Decision Made," then you have been placed on the waitlist. Last admission cycle, this held true until the summer, when the "Final Decision Made" message did not automatically signal acceptance. This year, all those who posted on this website that they had received the "Final" message were accepted, except for one poster who was rejected. If you receive the AMCAS CBC email shortly after getting the "Final" message (mine came the next morning), you are in. Good luck to you all!

I called today and they told me that the campus site placement letters have not been mailed out yet at least to the lady's knowledge. I'm getting really nervous now because some of you guys are already placed in Chicago.

Protodoc, any word yet?

Nothing here. Sounds like the few of us that got in a day before got their choice immediately, but they decided to wait on the bulk of us that sent their responses in Tuesday.

No word yet here either... but then I haven't checked my mail today yet. I'm getting nervous too because next Thursday the December kids get accepted, and then a week later their cards will be flooding in. I read that sheet on site preferences and it did say first come first serve and did not mention that site is based on anything else. What is going on here?!

Nooo!!!! I just got my site confirmation. I got assigned to Urbana/Rockford!!! What in the world?! It's so early in the game, what in the world happened here? I called and the lady said it fills up really fast and and that there's no such thing as a "waiting list" for Chicago either. I'm going back to my alma mater :/

Wow that is not cool. I mailed in my site preference about the same time you did so it looks like I'll be left out of Chicago as well. That's really sad 🙁 I will also be a graduate of UIUC (graduation next Saturday!) and I was hoping to get out of here. Oh well.

Well, if we're going to be stuck in Urbana, we can commisserate together on Green Street. Would you consider a different school now? I wouldn't... UIC is still my top choice regardless of location. Just can't justify paying double tuition anywhere else... I'll just make do with Urbana.

So far UIC is my only choice, but I'm OOS from Arizona. So if I get in there, I'll have the same mindset as you--can't justify paying that much more. I won't be completely devastated if I have to spend another year in Urbana and a few more in Rockford though.

Wow, there is no way they accepted over 175 students early...right?

I'm going to be really bummed out. I have lived here for 6 years now.

Wow. I'm not sure if I'd go if I don't get into Chicago. I thought I'd be ok. Guess I have to wait and find out tomorrow.

Apply for the Urban Med program and see if you get accepted. Then you would be in Chicago for sure. Its worth a shot, right?

I am positive that Chicago isn't full yet, mainly because there was only one round of acceptances and if they accepted 200 people per meeting then they would accept like 1000 people, woah!

I think that they are probably just trying to be more thoughtful with how they place people in the campuses ya know? I think they are trying to remove the "Get in early you get chicago" way of doing things and replacing it with placing people where they think they will perform best based on their qualifications and interviews etc. I guess we'll see as everyone else gets their site assignment... Maybe they thought that protodoc would fit in well with the Rockford vibe after the interview?

I am totally guessing on all of this though, thought discussion might ease the mind of those still waiting and those who got an assignment they didn't want.

Congrats protodoc, you are going to be a doctor!!

Thanks DrJD! I was a bit baffled and upset when I first opened that letter cuz I really was expecting Chicago, but I went jogging for three miles and that cooled me down. I'm just kicking myself cuz if I had asked my boss for the morning off and driven to UIC or even just overnighted my acceptance forms, I would have been assigned to Chicago. Missed it by a minute! But when I really think about it, my dream came true... I got into med school and my top choice at that. I'm about to pay super low tuition for a great education. Getting assigned to Urbana is like getting a great dish but without the garnish, in other words, it's still a perfect dream come true 🙂 Still, I'm going to try UMed and trying petitioning cuz it can't hurt, but if I have no choice but Champaign, then I'm going to suck it up and make the best of it.

Hey wasn't it supposed to be Urbana M1, Rockford or Peoria M2, and then M3 and M4 in Chicago? On my letter it says Urbana M1 and Rockford M2-M4. Am I going to be in Rockford 3 years? Did they change this since recent years?

I am hoping that someone can help me out here.

I sent in my placement card last week, and I clearly indicated Chicago as my first choice (I used their system, circled it, and wrote "first choice" next to it) because I have heard that the school will not really listen to your choices. However, because the card is confusing, and seems to ask you to rate the other three places separately, I did, assuming that they wanted to know how I ranked the site if I didn't get my first choice. I got a response today, and they placed me in Urbana. Does anyone know if it is possible to get them to change this? I can not believe that they have filled the Chicago campus before the New Year. I plan to call them tomorrow to ask them to change it. Anyone have experience with this? Will they even listen to me?

Thanks

P.S. After posting I realized that this conversation has already happened. If anyone called the school, what did they say? Also, is it still worth calling?

Congrats protodoc, you are going to be a doctor!!

Well, when they asked me why UIC, I clearly expressed why I wanted to learn and be trained as a physician in Chicago. I hope they place me in Chicago. I am baffled that so many people are getting their site locations while I was told that the letters were not even mailed out yet. How am I suppose to respond when they say that?

I got a response today, and they placed me in Urbana.

See that is truly surprising! Protodoc in Rockford wasn't too surprising, but Urbana only has 25 people! MOSTLY MD/PhD candidates, so it is really shocking that they would place someone there so soon in the cycle.

Sorry that you didn't get to Chicago, I am really surprised by these assignments that people are posting.

Out of curiosity cubssox, did you rank Urbana 2nd?

I stated that I wanted to practice and live my life in Chicago as well in my interview and thank you e-mail, but apparently they didn't listen. I really am wondering if they put it place a new system of assigning sites since when I called last week, they said that "the admissions committee has not decided where to place you yet but you should find out next week". That implies they actually have some reasoning behind where they assign you. I called immediately after I opened my letter and they said that Chicago usually fills up around this time and that there's no such thing as a waiting list for Chicago. We can petition but they won't look at our petitions until after May 15, which is the official last date that students can hold multiple spots. Trust me I'm still getting over the shock that I'm really going to Urbana as well... as much as I want to be positive I keep kicking myself for missing it by just that split second.

Oh and btw, does anyone remember if M2-M4 is all spent at Peoria or Rockford? Or just M2 and then we go to Chicago for M3 and M4?

On the card, which I maintain was really confusing, I put:
Chicago - I UPR - II
Urbana - 1 Peoria - 2 Rockford - 3

I highly doubt they are trying to get me to do MD/PhD. One of my interviewers was on the MD/PhD admissions board, and he said that I do not seem the type who you try for it. In response to this I told him he was correct and that I could not put 7 years into school.

Actually, I believe everyone who didn't get placed in Chicago goes to Urbana for M1, then 50 go to Peoria for M2 and 50 go to Rockford for M2. So I actually got assigned to Urbana for M1, and then Rockford for M2-M4. My question was that I have a friend who went to Urbana for M1, Rockford M2, then M3-M4 in Chicago. I thought this was how it worked? I'm wondering why my letter says Rockford M2-M4....

Your friend was atypical. M2-M4 are at the same location typically (Urbana, Peioria, or Rockford).

Oh no -- this is awful news. I have my heart set on Chicago as well

You are right they do... I just thought it was strange that they would start taking up spots in Urbana for those four years given how early it is in the season for the MD/PhD applicants ya know?

So weird guys, I guess we'll get a better idea of what is going on once more people get their letters in the mail.

I still find it hard to believe that Chicago would fill up so quickly!

So for everyone who did not get placed in Chicago, when did you guys mail in your placement cards? I know Protodoc and I mailed in our cards Tuesday, November 25. I hope that Chicago is not filled already. It really boggles my mind that it would be filled.

Sent first thing tuesday morning from st. louis missouri -- sigh. Still waiting to hear back

Hopefully we will receive something tomorrow. Protodoc sent it in on Tuesday as well and got something today. I believe he's in the Chicagoland area so hopefully there will be something in our mailboxes tomorrow. Fingers crossed for Chicago!

I always thought the January or Feb. accepted groups were the ones crossing their fingers for Chicago and not us, who were accepted in November.

Sigh. Has anyone gotten placed in chicago who sent in after this tuesday date? If you have, speak up

i used to be in the gppa at uic

the administrators told us that they place people based on their previous locations for undergrad, place where they live, and overall fit for the campuses. i highly doubt (i have resources confirming this) that chicago is filled. if you were placed in a certain track, its for a reason. i know this is a harsh truth but honestly they cannot place everyone at their first choice considering there are quite a few other batches of students that need to be considered for placement as well.

all i can say is that patience is a virtue.

as for appealing the placement decision. good luck, i know many gppa students that are trying to appeal their tracks right now to get into chicago for this fall and its a rough road ahead for them, let alone regular applicants.

I understand the idea, but I don't understand how they would judge best fit for their incoming students. That seems hard to do without knowing the person very well.

Yeah, granted I reside here in Urbana, but I have family in Chicago. I don't know how they would know that.

Wow guys, I'm actually stunned that they are already starting to place people somewhere other than their first choice. I believe what Dr. JD said makes a lot of sense -- they are placing people now based on what they believe to be the "best fit" for them instead of following the first-come first-serve model. If they are in fact doing that, I think its absolute garbage. Who does the AdCom think they are? To be able to judge where a person will spend the next four years of their life based on a few essays and where they've lived in the past? Bull***. We worked hard to make sure our applications were in early, so that we could be interviewed early, be accepted early, and have the ability to pick our site preference. Doesn't the admissions office realize that location plays an important role in an applicant's decision to matriculate?

Whew. Sorry for the rant.

There is one other thing I want to address, and that is the fact that Chicago has "175 spots" has been mentioned a few times on this thread. The truth is that there are not 175 spots. UIC has the GPPA undergraduate program, which guarantees a certain number of students a spot in their medical school. I don't know the exact number of GPPA students, but I'm willing to guess there are at least a dozen or so entering each year. Skrilladoc, maybe you know the exact number? There are also a certain number of reserved spots for the MD/PhD students at the Chicago campus. So when you factor all of that in, I'm guessing there are closer to 140 actual spots open for the taking. I still don't think that that many could have been filled up this fast, but it does lend credibility to that theory.

As I mentioned earlier, UMed is always an option for those who want to give Chicago a second shot; although it does mean playing the waiting game all over again. I'm sorry it didn't work out for some of you guys.

From what I know about the GPPA, they are guaranteed a spot in the medical school but not neccessarily the CHicago track. Only after their 4 yrs of undergrad the adcom decides where to place them. So even if they attend UIC for undergrad, this does not mean they'll automatically get CHicago.

I should recieve a decision for my application next week. I want Chicago just as much as any of you, maybe even more. I live about 5 minutes from campus. Just crossing my fingers and hope for the best. Good luck to you all.

i know that in my gppa class there were upwards of thirty to forty people. about half were placed at chicago and the rest Urbana M1 and either Peoria/Rockford M2-M4.

just so you all know, the gppa essentially allows people to graduate in three years. this means that current year 4 (undergrad) gppa students who are assigned to chicago get to go in addition to any year 3 (undergrad and graduating early) gppa students.

it is possible that chicago is filling up and very quickly at that, but like i said again, i know that all 175 spots are not accounted for because the entire second half of the interviewing process remains.

the admissions committee places you where you will be most effective as a student, future physician, and learning strengths/abilities. obviously you will have better resources/familiarity with urbana if you spent 4-6 years going to school there.....i'd say that is an advantage for you versus an inner city UIC student who has familiarity with the chicago campus/professors/hospital.

these things im sure are all taken into account and it seems unfair but its logical from a sorting out point of view, which the adcom is obviously taking.

Does anyone know if they might be referencing our secondary applications to make their decision? Based on the "Please check the community size in which you have resided for the majority of your life" question? I was accepted 11/25, mailed the form 11/26 and my status is updated but still no news yet.

I also checked that I lived in a large community the majority of my life (grew up downtown St. Paul, MN and lived in Hong Kong, Raleigh, Atlanta, St. Louis, and Chicago just mins from UIC) so I'm definitely a city girl who has lived in diverse places and prefers to stay in a city, but apparently they decided I need to be shipped to Urbana for a year and then shipped to Rockford. I don't know why they thought this was in my best interest but I do believe they are starting a new system of deciding where people go. It makes sense but I got the shorter end of the stick on this one so of course I'm a bit bitter... and btw I got accepted 11/24, mailed everything at 7:00am on my way to work 11/25. And I'm 35 minutes from downtown. I can't blame USPS because I noticed that on the letter of site confirmation, the envelope was postmarked 12/10 and I received the letter yesterday, 12/11. I guess this really was adcom's decision for me...

Oh and not that it's important, but I'm a she 😛. People think "ewww... Proctodoc?" and they think some ill-humored dorkus guy, but I'm a girl haha.

Chicago is filled up.

You can petition with documentation, etc. But that won't happen till May 15th.

Wish I had same day mailed my response.

Very unlikely I will go to UIC now.

Yup, didn't get Chicago. I'm really bummed out about it. My heart was so set on Chicago. *sigh*

Crap! I'm not home yet, but I'm assuming I won't get it either. That freaking sucks.

Hi there,

Does anyone know how competitive the UMed program is? I didn't get Chicago either (Urbana/Rockford) but that is not the only reason I would consider UMed. I am also considering the primary care scholarship the Illinois Dept of Health has and think UMed would complement this well.

To the people who have ranted before: I go to undergrad in a college town similar to Urbana and while I am finishing college in 3 years, there is very little to compel me to go and live in another college town for medical school - even for one year (I hate college towns!!! I am desperate to live in the city and be near my family again). I agree that the Adcom is not equipped to tell us where we will be happier or more successful and I agreen we worked hard to make sure our applications were early and interviewed early. 🙁 Sorry....

Thanks everybody!

Does anyone know how competitive the UMed program is?

This is my first post but I am following this thread with interest. I was accepted on 11/20/2008, received my packet on 11/22, sent in my deposit and preference card on 11/24, and received a letter dated 11/26 saying that I was placed in Chicago. I currently live in metro Chicago.

Regarding the UMed program, I was told that last year they had 100+ applications for 20 slots.

Just something to keep in mind, and I really do not want to offend anyone, but please do not apply to the UMed program unless you really are SINCERELY interested in working with the urban underserved. This happens to be my career goal and it was all over both my primary and secondary applications. I will be applying for UMed and, if I am accepted, I would be really disappointed to learn that my fellow UMed classmates were only there so they could be assigned to Chicago. Please try to be considerate of the fact that UMed means more to some people than just campus placement.

I am sorry for all of you who did not get your first choice campus. Maybe the economic downturn is causing more people to look at their cheaper state school in a different light, which is why Chicago filled up sooner this year?

Good luck to all of you! 🙂

Maybe they are full. I feel like anyone who mailed in their preference and deposit after 11/24, we got other sites. I don't know...I'm sure the December group will get Chicago too. It's just so early to be full...

Had I known I would be missing Chicago by a nanosecond, I would have taken off work Monday and waited until 12:52pm, then put on my best pair of running shoes and then gone out to await the mailman, scooped that packet, then ran to my car and driven to UIC, filling in forms in traffic. I would have had quarters waiting in my car to park at UIC and I would have brought flowers and chocolate for the secretary who would warmly receive my site preference card and run to turn it to Adcom. Maybe then I would have gotten Chicago. I should have brought my A game... for 2009-2010 cycle applicants, here's an idea.

Seriously it doesn't help that at the interview day and whenever people called they said Chicago doesn't get filled up until late December. I didn't think I had anything to worry about putting my forms in regular mail. 🙁

Chicago can't be full, they still have over 5 acceptance rounds to go! Given that only 100 do the UPR track that just doesn't add up... Maybe they are tryng to keep the "stronger" candidates in Chicago? Sorry for those who haven't gotten your first choice! What is the farthest west that someone has received their site assignment?

For those of us not in Chicago, will you all still actively consider UIC COM anymore? I know it sounds so superficial that we would give up a school because of site placement but we have the right to choose where we want to be. So far the only other option I have is to go to Milwaukee... I know UIC is so cheap, but location is paramount. What about the rest of you? Any other places you all might go to?
