I have an interview this week and have noticed on the interview feedback that the question "What is the most significant medical innovation in the last 10 years/Discuss some recent medical innovations" comes up a lot. For anyone who has interviewed, any suggestions on how to answer that? I have been looking up some innovations but there is so much stuff it is hard to pick a good answer. Any help is really appreciated!

when I interviewed, I googled top ten innovations and the cleveland clinic top 10 innovations of 2008 popped up so I just memorized about four of them and knowing them well. I figured its better to know a few really well than to know a bunch haphazardly..

goodluck with it..pm me if u have more questions 🙂

Seriously, don't freak out about that question. Just have an answer and be able to defend it.

Chicago track!

Just got the letter in the mail today, and I'm really excited. I guess there are still some spots left after all. (Based on all the talk around here, I was absolutely convinced I'd be back in Urbana next year...)

I also included a very formal letter with my site placement request (~200 words) enumerating my reasons for wanting to be in Chicago; a sort of pre-emptive petition... and I guess it worked!

So that makes my total UIC application calendar look like:

Secondary Complete: Late August
Interview Letter Date: 11/10/08
Interview Date: 01/14/09 (in Peoria)
Final Decision: 01/26/09 (online status change)
Big Envelope: 01/30/09
Returned Card: 02/02/09 (I turned it in by hand to the admissions office and included a nice note about why I wanted Chicago track)
Site Placement: 02/09/09 (Chicago!)

So, unless I get a miraculous acceptance elsewhere (waiting, with fingers crossed, to hear from WashU post-interview...) I'll see you all in Chicago!

Also, A sincere thanks to all you guys for helping everyone through the process. Without all the info from SDN, I'd probably not be going to med school next year.

I got my site placement today too. Chicago track!
Interviewed in early January, big packet January 30th, mailed card and $$ in on the 31st.

Like Josh said, thanks to everyone for all the info posted on here and for answering questions. And ALSO like Josh said: unless I get a miraculous acceptance elsewhere I'll see you in Chicago!

Wow. That's really messed up. Glad you got the campus you wanted.

I'm now triple-pissed about my placement now.

I bet people are starting to give up their acceptances as they chose to attend other schools so Chicago spaces open back up. The school is probably just giving those spaces out as they become available.

I'm basing this totally on speculation.

yeah, i'm not understanding why they said it was first come first serve when it clearly isn't. if turning in a note has any effect on site placement, everyone should be made aware of that in the directions on the card.

WOW, late nov. and early dec. interviewees really got shafted. I got in after my Dec 7th interview, and was placed into Urbana + Rockford track. Great--GL to the Chicago ppl

I don't think notes have an effect. See zipmedic's post:

I wouldn't do either. Submit the card as is with your preferences listed. They aren't going to take any other information into account right now. After May 15th, they'll read the appeal letter (which you'll write if you didn't get your top choice) and make decisions based on merit.

They say they make decisions based on your preference, goals and the college goals. I had a good and legitimate reason for wanting Chicago. They knew about this reason and I think they took it into account.

I don't think that it's a first come first served assignment this year. They probably should have made that more clear through the entire process.

It is, but not strictly (and it never has been strict). There are exceptions to every rule.

My FAFSA is officially processed and has been sent off to UIC! So the EFC is what is expected to be contributed by myself or my family per year or throughout the course of 4 years?

EFC is done per year; you should get plenty (total cost of attendance) of aid.

My FAFSA is officially processed. However, I had to make a correction to it as my dad accidently include the equity in the house as one of the investments (even though it tells you not to). Anyway, I submitted the correction....we'll see what happens.

So, I take it this EFI thing is just a way of gauging people? I mean, I'm not getting anything from my parents. Will they not take this into account?

Just relax and wait for your financial aid award letter to arrive. 🙂

I received my site placement: Chicago! I'm really excited--and totally shocked considering others' experiences!

I'm happy people are getting Chicago but I am definitely feeling a little bum about not getting Chicago. I'm still really thankful that I got accepted though!

My spouse and I totally agree with Hypnix....we have totally put our hearts into Peoria BUT we are re-thinking about petitioning now that everyone new is getting Chicago.

Haha...I'm kindof getting that second thought as well, books. Btw, I'm also in the Peoria track. Glad to meet someone else currently assigned there =)

On the plus side guys...housing and living expenses should be less at the campuses outside chicago. 🙄

just so you all know, living in chicago may cost more, but it will cost you more in the sense that the area surrounding the medical school has been increasing in violent crime. just a factor you might want to consider b4 submitting your cards for the chi. if you cant handle big city life and the stuff that comes with it, dont pick there.

true story. i currently live in chicago and my car was broken into 2 nights ago and my cd player and gps were stolen and my passenger side door is all ripped up. 🙁 I currently work at UIC and I live about 2 miles from the med campus. it's not very safe.

It's plenty safe. "Violent crime" in the sense most people consider it (battery, sexual assault, etc.) has been declining lately; property crimes (burglary) have been steady. Robbery, however, has been increasing steadily. Be smart about where you walk and when you do it and you'll be fine. There's a redcar service to get you home, the UIC police will escort you to your car or another building 24/7. Use your brain and you'll be fine.

...of course, there's nothing to stop people from busting into your car except to make sure you don't leave any type of valuables visible.

Regarding the area, I used to live in South Loop and I'd always carry some single bills on me because I'd get stopped a lot by people with false stories like "I'm trying to get on a Greyhound to go to Tennessee to see my sick brother" and the easiest way to escape was to give them a few bucks. I also used to carry a mase spray when I jogged outside in the evenings, but otherwise I thought of the area as safe. Oh man... just talking about the South Loop makes me really disheartened again that I didn't get assigned to Chicago. I still don't see how they think I'd be better at Champaign/Rockford... Chicago is seriously my city! I seriously know more neighborhoods, restaurants, bars and clubs, attraction sites, etc. than any of my native Chicagoan friends. Grrrr!!!

I stumble upon people like that before. This one time, a guy told me he came all the way from Tennessee for a job. Turns out there was no job and he had no money to get home. He actually showed me his greyhound ticket with the date and time. So I KINDA felt bad for him and instead of giving him money, I bought him fried rice. Who knows what he would have done with the money if I gave him cash.

And yes it does suck we didn't get Chicago, Proctodoc. But hey, you can't complain about in state tuition. 😀 BTW how is your petition coming along?

I feel compelled to address the safety issue. In short, you shouldn't choose against Chicago due to city crime, because a little diligence can make it a non-issue.

- Violent crime is NOT increasing on campus. I believe one student has been battered in the last 6-months, on the blue line, which caters to the undergrad campus. Violent crime has gone up in the city in general, but that's gang bangers shooting each other. THAT IS NOT AN ISSUE NEAR THIS SCHOOL.

-Never give money to anyone who asks for it. Not a homeless person, not some guy who's a dollar short at Union Station. CPD will tell you not to do this. It encourages the practice, supports drug abuse, and puts you at risk of being robbed. If you feel an obligation to help the needy, donate to a charity.

-Yes, people are occasionally robbed. This may very well be an increasing occurrence. It comes with living in a city. Two things are generally true when this happens: the person is alone, and it is at night. Solution: don't walk alone at night. You wouldn't do it late on a large college campus, so don't do it here either.

-There are bus routes that stop right in front of the school, and the pink line stops on campus. There is a university operated car service that will take you home if you live in the neighborhood. If you like to stay late, you can take it home every night you want. They'll take you to your car if you drive here. As a last resort, keep the number for a cab company in your phone.

On a related note, I feel for everyone caught up in the site placement mess. We probably lose a dozen very qualified students every year because they get placed in Rockford, don't want to risk playing the petition game, and go to Rush/Loyola/elsewhere because they don't want to live in a small town.

And for everyone who thinks there's more to it than first come first serve, there is. Some of it makes sense: obviously, you want a good mix of age/sex/race on each campus, but I think they like to distribute talent equally among the campuses as well. I'm sure they've got some other crazy reasons to do stuff the way they do, which no one is privy to.

Hey sounds like the same guy! But yea there are lots of stories like that floating around... Oh and absolutely the in-state tuition is awesome. When I hear people complaining about the 200k+ debt they'll accumulate, I remember yet again how lucky I am to only have to pay 28k a year. Today out of the blue I felt almost the same euphoria I first did when I got accepted! We really did it people!!!

when it comes to the streets of chicago, theres no reason to be afraid as long as you pay attention to where you are/are going. especially around uic, you could be in an up-scale, perfectly safe neighborhood, then walk for ten minutes and end up in a place where you are afraid for your life. its not terribly hard to find and stay clear of the more dangerous neighborhoods, so just use your common sense and you should be fine.

regarding people begging for money, i find it easiest to just explain to people that i am a struggling college student, and they always understand - i'm sure the same would work for a med student. there are some individuals that are more persistent/tug at my heartstrings more, and that is when i usually give them a few bucks - just be sure you don't open your wallet full of bills right in front of their face. i figure if they put in all the work to make up a fake story (like "i need gas to get to my sick brother"), put on a suit, and stand on the street all day, they deserve a little something for the effort.

this is my advice and opinion as someone who was born and raised in chicago. i just hope i have the opportunity to use this advice for myself in medical school.🙄

can someone explain what others have meant about "losing your spot" if you petition for a different site?? Thanks....

I am scheduled to interview at UIC on Feb 24th. Does anyone know whether UIC is still interviewing for acceptance or is it just for waitlist spots?
I got accepted to two other schools so I was thinking if it is really worth it to make a trip.
Thanks for your info and time in advance

You won't lose anything. If your appeal is denied, you wind up where you were originally assigned.

At the least interview presentation I attended, they said they were still offering acceptances. If UIC isn't a top choice compared to the two you're in, why would you bother anyway? If it is, then show up. 🙂

hey zipmedic! do you know what kind of health insurance coverage we get as students?

Good question! I'm curious as well. I just finished my immunizations and have my form all filled out! 5 shots, 1 lab draw, and 2 skin tests later, I'm all done! On a side note, I hate when phlebotomists don't listen to me and try to find my vein on their own. Last week this lady stuck a needle in and wiggled it around for like 2 minutes until she found my vein.

CampusCare. Check this web site out for more information. I've never had a problem with it; went to the UIC ED for something once and never even got a statement, let alone a bill. It was simply taken care of. Never had a problem going to my own private physician, either. Pretty good stuff.

Wow. That health insurance has great benefits/coverage! 👍

I know, i'm super happy about that. I currently work for a medical group and they still have crappy coverage. this'll be great!

So....., I called the admissions office today and they told me that I'm still in line to be screened for an interview. It's been exactly 15 weeks since I was complete. Did they get that many app's this year? I got an interview invite from Southern Illinois (still waiting on results) less than 48 hours after I was complete, and I have an acceptance from a public out of state school, so I think I'm pretty competitive. I'm an Illinois resident and I'm wondering why the Chicago schools seem to show me no love? Is anyone else in a similar situation?

It took 16 weeks, but my status has finally changed to "applicant in process." Does anyone know the "average" time it takes for admissions to decide if they are going to invite you for an interview? Also, is the class full? I'm afraid at this point in the application process they are only interviewing for waitlist spots.

I said three days ago they're still offering spots.

congrats on finally getting that changed. unfortunately, what happened with me is that i was on "applicant" for a few weeks and then got switched back about a month ago...im still stuck on "application". i think the typical experience, though, earlier in the cycle, was a wait of 3-4 weeks for an interview/rejection, but i would imagine they will start moving quicker now.

no matter how busy they are, im getting tired of waiting on these people - theyve had my completed app for almost as long as yours and this is my top choice school. i mean, how long could it really take to offer an interview???

Last year I was complete in August and it took till the end of the interview season to reject me. I was "Applicant in Process" 4 or 5 times as well. I just didn't make the cutoff last year. But I also knew it meant I was close to getting the interview, hence reapplying again this year.

So take this as a good sign you are close. Hopefully you will get over the hump this cycle.

well, just to add icing to this cake, i've been on "applicant in process" since oh...late august. and it hasn't changed back to "application" so i don't know what to think. last time i called, they said they're waiting on one committee member (?) but i can't help but hope that i still have a chance since this is my top school

I just cancelled my interview that was scheduled for next week at Chicago. Hope one of you gets it. Good luck

Yeah, I'm setting myself up for many more weeks of waiting. It's a shame to be so excited at a mere change to "applicant in process." UIC is also my first choice so I'm trying to be as patient as possible, but at this point in the game I'm getting a little annoyed! I wish UIC moved as fast as Southern. I already got my AWPA letter from Southern, so now I'm just waiting to see if I get placed during the March batch.

You don't have to have the Hepatitis B form or transcript in before you can get a site placement do you? They've had my offer acceptance form and deposit for a week now but it still doesn't say anything under "additional correspondence"...

I feel all of you playing the waiting game, and i hope we all get answers sooner than later.

Has anyone heard of anyone being accepted after receiving the no decision email post-interview?

No, you just need it before July or so. 🙂

Hey no worries....my took awhile too. But it finally came! Let us know where you are going when you get it!
