With regards to verbal, I think I might be the lowest. I have a 6 in Verbal :scared:. Haha It definitely wasn't funny when I applied but looking back at it, I'm shocked that I got accepted anywhere with that score. Yall can check my MD applicants for my other stats. I was accepted in the December batch.
 
So question that has been bothering me for a while. On the financial aid budget, anyone know why is there an extra 25k added on the M2 and M3 summers?

All the other schools I have interviewed at don't seem to have this....

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the extra ~25k after the M2 and M3 summer is added because of your clinical rotations. After your M2 year and after you pass your USMLE Step 1, you immediately begin your rotations. So cheers to more loans.
 
Sooo, does anyone know if these dates (especially April!) are for waitlist spots? Do they actually still have more acceptances to give out?
 
Is there a TB form we were supposed to receive and have a physician sign? Or can we just send in proof of a recent TB test? Also, do we just mail teh admissions office our transcripts?
 
So... I've been waiting on UIC post interviewed waitlist since the december meeting. I just got accepted to another school Albany Med. And I've been writing LOI to UofI because it is BY FAR my first choice. should i tell them that i am now holding an acceptance, but they are still my first choice, and i will continue to hold my acceptance until i get a final decision from them?

No I wouldn't... it just sounds like you're trying to pressure them into a decision fast. Besides, all you really can do is hold your acceptance until you hear from UIC anyway so you don't need to inform them that this is what you'll do. Rather, you could send another LOI just conveying your sincerest interest in them, stating clearly that UIC is your first choice and list your specific reasons. Just send another LOI or call for status updates to stay on the tops of their minds. Good luck! I'm rooting for ya!

It doesn't matter. I was just wondering if mail is arriving at my place since I havent' received anything since the acceptance packet in November. Thanks though.

Hey, so my acceptance packet had a sheet in there entitled, "Requirements for Permission to Register." If you look at item #3, you'll see the link there. You follow that link and click on the button that says, "Medical Immunization Form for Admissions" (on the right hand side).

Does anyone know who the dean of admissions at UIC is? Also, I interviewed on 2/18 -- anyone know when we should expect to hear?

Haha. I think I beat you....I got a 5 in verbal! And yea its totally funny now but b4 I got accepted into schools I swear I was loosing so much sleep over it!

Life lessons: Dont listen to people who say you absoluetly need certain stats (or should I say breakdown of stats) to get into places!

Dr. Girotti. And you should watch your status page; you should have been evaluated at the committee meeting on the 19th. If your file didn't get into the "to review" pile, it'll be a few more weeks.

interviews are reportedly running through most of April, so im thinking invites will be given out by phone call for at least a few more weeks. however, my perspective might be skewed considering i am also holding out hope for an interview here.
 
i hope we still have a chance to interview. i'm crossing my fingers for this school too!

I just found out I was assigned to those campuses and would like to know more about the cities/opportunities/living accommodations. Yes, I am looking through the websites, but personal anecdotes are very much appreciated 😛

so i think i misplaced my second letter from uic that states the specifics about the interview day etc. since i have my interview soon, can anyone give me a short summary of what it said? i would GREATLY appreciate it! and sorry for the hassle.

Being that I'm an undergrad at the University of Illinois, I will offer you my take on Champaign-Urbana:

1. The campus is big and sprawling (and ugly). You really don't need to worry about this, though, because I believe all of the medical classes are in one building.

2. I would highly recommend you live off campus to be sure you have a quiet, peaceful atmosphere where you can study. There are some nice apartment complexes/homes pretty near campus that I think are pretty reasonably priced.

3. Unfortunately, the medical building is situated among the undergrad buildings, and parking around there is a real pain. You will probably have to buy a parking pass for one of the campus lots if you want to drive. There is a decent public transportation system, so try to find an apartment near a bus-route if you can.

4. Culture: there are lots of campus bars where the undergrads hang out. If you are big on night-life, there are some classier, quieter establishments in downtown Champaign and some in Urbana that grad students usually go to. Having grown up in Chicago, I think the culture is weak, but at least it exists.

5. It's in the middle of farm country. There are some state parks within reasonable driving distance if you are looking for a way to get away on a week-end (and if you like the outdoors). Other than that, there isn't much going on in this part of the state.

Don't let me sour you on the community, but I do not really like it here and am happy to be graduating this year. As long as your expectations aren't too high and you can manage to stay away from the undergrad students, there is no reason why you can't enjoy your time here.

edit: when referring to culture, i meant museums, concerts, sports, shopping, etc. in addition to the bars.

I do have to disagree with the comments on the Urbana-Champaign campus. It is definitely not Chicago down here, it is much more quiet and peaceful, but there are museums (2) and nice bars and restaurants (chains and others) that I don't think you'd find in a lot of other places. There is a lot going on if you look for it, but it's harder to wander around and just stumble upon interesting things. I'm not sure if that makes sense. Also, I like that it's smaller, because then everything is closer. I'm ready to leave this town, but I've really have enjoyed my time here. I'm going to miss it a lot. For those of you coming down here, I do suggest living in downtown Champaign or in the Urbana area. I would not recommend looking for a place on campus in Champaign - it's louder and dirtier. Let me know if you have more specific questions!
 
has anyone received any information on a second look day? I know one of my friends has received information for the Chicago campus. Are there ones for Rockford, UC and Peoria?

I just got an invite by phone today... Don't get reception at work, so I'll have to call back tomorrow. Anyways, they're still handing them out.
 
I got put on the Urbana-Peoria track. But I want the Chicago track. I already sent a letter of request for Chicago with my site-preference card. I guess they did not listen. Is there anything else I can do?

No. Just try and be as patient as you can. Some Chicago spots will open up after May 15th as people opt to attend other schools. Additionally, appeal letters are granted based on circumstances, not chronological order. Just because yours has not been granted yet does not mean the committee "did not listen."

so will I get a response in may if I get into Chicago? I'm pretty sure my circumstances are enough to let me go to Chicago. I don't need to send another appeal do I?

You will get a response sometime between now and the end of the summer if you get into Chicago. Remember, everyone thinks their circumstances are "enough." There are a finite number of spots and some people with good reasons just can't fit.

Why would you need to send another letter?

For the people on the Urbana - Peoria / Rockford tracks.... what are you guys doing about housing in Urbana? I'd prefer to have a roommate or two, but don't know where to live. Contact me! I'd like to begin getting to know you all anyway.

I am also on the same track-welcome! There are a lot of housing on Craigslist.net. We (my wife and I) have heard the same as someone else just posted--not to live right next to campus! We are going to fly out the end of May to find housing and see the city. We've seen some nice places online that aren't very expensive! That's a plus to NOT getting Chicago--cheaper living expenses!!

Also, FYI: we just heard last night that Pres. Bush changed the 20/220 law to a 15 to 150 % law....meaning starting July 2009 residents will need to start paying medical schools loans instead of deferring until AFTER residency! I live in urbana right now and the residential neighborhood starting from a block east of Lincoln Ave (which is Busey) and north to about two blocks north of Springfield Ave (which is Main) south to about Nevada is a good area to live. It's also decently close to the medical sciences building. I rent with Hunsinger right now and they have a lot of places in this area but there are also a lot of independent apartments too. Barr apartments vary from decent to really crappy so make sure you see the place first. good luck finding housing! Hopefully I'll be joining you on the Urbana-Peoria track (which is my first choice)...but i need an interview first 🙂
 
Congrats to all new acceptees! If you're set on UIC and available this Saturday, 3/14, we're getting together for the first time for dinner at 7:00pm at Champps in Lombard. We set this up awhile ago so I didn't get to send new acceptees invites. The address and directions are below:

2301 Fountain Square Drive
Lombard, IL

Directions from downtown:
Take I-290 W for about 14 miles
Stay LEFT to take I-88 W and stay on for about 2 miles
EXIT at Route 83 N/Kingery Hwy N
Go NORTH on Route 83/Kingery Hwy for 0.2 mile
LEFT onto 22nd St and stay on for about 1.5 miles (will turn into Butterfield Rd.)
RIGHT onto Meyers Rd.

Champps will be in the northwest corner of Butterfield Rd. and S. Meyers Rd. You will see Dick’s, P.F. Chang’s, Weber Grill, and a huge fountain. Say you're with UIC College of Medicine. It'd be great to meet everyone so hope you can make it!
 
I applied to UMed and am aware that it won't be reviewed until after March 30 but am concerned that if I don't make it, it may be too late to appeal for Chicago placement. Do they only consider appeals after May 15?

If I submit an appeal now, I'm afraid it will look like I'm just applying to UMed to get into Chicago which is not the case. I am NOT applying to UMed as a way to get into Chicago, but for actual interests related to my public health and urban experience background. Either way, I want placement in Chicago for both professional and personal reasons (my wife, family etc). Any advice?

I am a little worried, however, because I am participating in a study abroad program right now, and I don't have my phone with me. Does UIC only call people on their cell phones to tell if they were granted an interview? Or will they send an email also?

I did not receive an e-mail from them regarding the interview. They phoned my permanent address and I did not find out for almost a week. If you don't have access to a phone, then maybe you could send an e-mail to check your status.

Officially, they consider appeals after May 15th. Some people have reported getting earlier appeals granted. There's really nothing you can do but wait. You're right about sending an appeal letter in now; do not do that. UMed is not a super-popular program yet (read: not yet terribly competitive); your odds of being admitted, given that you were admitted to the College of Medicine already, are probably pretty good. No e-mails. Status page will be updated if someone has time and thinks of it, but most often it's just the phone call. I'd suggest you get someone to get your phone and monitor it for you or that you periodically get to a phone and check your messages. Good luck.
