so how do we sign up for Second Look Day? I'm on urbana-peoria track, but appealed for Chicago track. Do we have to RSVP or something for second look day?

its on april 24th. though i'm not sure if this applies only to those admitted to the chicago campus. Im on the Urbana track and had no news of it. I heard from a friend about the 2nd look day.

It isn't geared for non-Chicago students. I'm not sure if other campuses do a second look or not.

thanks zipmedic!

any one out there that submitted a petition receive a response to it?

There's another tour [slightly different than the interview one, depending on your guide] and a med student panel that can answer every possible question you can think of. It's a nice little day to schmooze with your future classmates.

:xf:so i should rsvp, cross my fingers and hope that i get zipmedic as a guide? or are you on the panel? blech it's too bad that uic com always caters from pompeii-- a sbarro's in the guise of an italian restaurant

👍

In terms of food I highly recommend the thai place right next to the pompeii's (golden thai). Their fried rice is especially awesome.

Does anyone know what acceptable attire would be for an in-person appointment to discuss applications at UIC? 1) Casual or 2) Dressy?

Thanks.

so what does a second look day comprise of? Also did anyone receive a response for petition they did yet?

I'm giving one of the tours and on the panel. They don't "always cater from pompeii [sic]". On several interview days, I've enjoyed different restaurants' fare. It's primarily a matter of who can get the right amount of food to the school at the right time and for the best discount. Additionally, they don't use Pompei at all for Second Look; they spend a bit more money on you now that you're accepted students. 🙂 Besides, Pompei isn't all that bad.

Neither. Business casual.

so what does a second look day comprise of?

Seriously? I know you're excited and whatnot, but please read the thread before you ask questions that have already been answered:

I applied to UMed and am aware that it won't be reviewed until after March 30 but am concerned that if I don't make it, it may be too late to appeal for Chicago placement. Do they only consider appeals after May 15?

If I submit an appeal now, I'm afraid it will look like I'm just applying to UMed to get into Chicago which is not the case. I am NOT applying to UMed as a way to get into Chicago, but for actual interests related to my public health and urban experience background. Either way, I want placement in Chicago for both professional and personal reasons (my wife, family etc). Any advice?

Does anyone know how many people they interview for the UMed program? The e-mail said they interview the top candidates, so I was wondering what your chances are if you are granted an interview. (The waiting never seems to end.....now that I have an acceptance, I still have to worry about another admission process!)

I like how the FAFSA info document that comes in the acceptance packet says you should "submit FAFSA by March 1st for priority consideration". I GOT THIS PACKET ON APRIL 4th WTF... :meanie:

Ditto....just submit it ASAP I guess!

Relax; there will be plenty of loan money for you.

Does an invitation to participate in the UHP Summer Prematriculation Program mean that you've been accepted to UHP or is that just something that is offered? Anyone know?

I kind of can't wait until school starts 😛 I know I won't be saying that in the middle of September though...

Hey all! Does anyone know if M2 and M3 are unusually expensive at UIC? I think their tuition for those years is about the same as the tuition at a private school. They are each about ~$27,000 for Fall and Spring semester, plus ~$9,000 for the Summer semester, plus fees, living expenses and all the other stuff.

So, I received my financial aid award e-mail (loans) from UIC. Everything on the page and the fact that it was on UICs website indicates that I'm on the Chicago track. When I look at the Registration information, it says this:

Curriculum Information
Current Program Doctor of Medicine
Level😛rofessional - Chicago
Program:MD:Medicine - Chicago -UIC
Admit Term:Fall 2009 - Chicago
Admit Type:Regular Admission
Catalog Term:Fall 2009 - Chicago
College:Coll Medicine at Chicago - CS
Campus:ChicagoMajor and Department:Medicine - Chicago, Administration

Does that mean I got admitted to the Chicago track? Did anyone else have similar findings?

I think all tracks are administered through UIC... I would call to double check though.

Hey, I think you did get Chicago track. Mine says Urbana.
College: College of Medicine at Urbana
Campus says Chicago though. I sent in a letter of petition a while back and I guess it didn't get granted. How sad...Did you petition?

I submitted my site-assignment slip this morning (in-person), and a few hours ago I got the "Here is your UIN" email. When I checked my registration information for Fall 2009 I saw this:

Curriculum Information Current Program
Doctor of Medicine
Level: Professional - Chicago
Program: MD:Medicine - Chicago -UIC
Admit Term: Fall 2009 - Chicago
Admit Type: Regular Admission
Catalog Term: Fall 2009 - Chicago
College: Coll Medicine at Chicago - CS
Campus: Chicago
Major and Department: Medicine - Chicago, Administration

Can anyone else confirm that this means I have Chicago Track, because I am about ready to jump up and shout! 😀

For those who don't know how to check registration information, here are the steps:

1) https://apps.uillinois.edu/selfservice/
2) Click on "University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)"
3) Enter your "Enterprise ID" and login.
4) Click on "Registration and Records"
5) Click on "Student Records and Transcripts"
6) Click on "View Student Information"
7) Select "Fall 2009"

I also dropped my site card off in person and received the e-mail this afternoon. My info has Chicago listed for everything:

Student Information effective from Fall 2009 - Chicago to The End of Time
Registered for Term:No
First Term Attended:Fall 2009 - Chicago
Status:Active
Residence:Resident, In State Tuition
Citizenship:Citizen
Student Type:First Time Professional

However, I'm not going to get too excited until I have the site placement in my hand! My biggest concern is that everyone who has not yet been
placed (the people who were recently admitted) will all have Chicago listed until they are formally assigned.

re: site assignment

if it helps anybody out, mine says:

Student Information effective from Fall 2009 - Chicago to The End of Time Registered for Term: No First Term Attended: Fall 2009 - Chicago Status: Active

Student Type: First Time Professional
Curriculum Information Current Program Doctor of Medicine Level: Professional - Chicago Program: MD:Medicine-Urbana -UIC Admit Term: Fall 2009 - Chicago Admit Type: Regular Admission Catalog Term: Fall 2009 - Chicago College: College of Medicine at Urbana Campus: Chicago Major and Department: Medicine-Urbana, Administration & Gen Exp

So basically the "program" and "college" sections indicate the urbana placement. FYI, I also wrote a petition. I think those who have Chicago listed for those categories should be justifiably hopeful. Then again, that's just my speculation.

If it says "Coll Medicine at Chicago - CS / Campus: Chicago" you're in. Welcome.

Have they started replying to petition letters yet? I'm the primary care taker of my grandparents over here in Chicago and I need to stay here..I turned in my appeal letter a long time ago..hopefully I get it!

mine says Col of Med-Urbana-UIC, but the campus says Chicago? very confused...

I'm waiting as well! Accordingly to last year's thread, nobody was granted their petition until after May 15th.

I've been calling for the last 4 weeks to find out if I've been granted an interview. All I have gotten is "your file is in review." For those of you who know, is the interview season over? have all the invitations been emailed? Thanks for you response!

Thanks for the links! Very helpful...

Quick question... where did you get them from? I hadn't receieved any information yet... just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Yeah...that confused me as well. I looked at campus first and thought I got in.

It's interesting if last year's thread only granted petitions after May 15th. It makes sense and that's what they told us, but zipmedic, I believe, said they have started to look at them? I'm not sure if I remember correctly. I tend to read over this thread on my phone while walking somewhere 😀 I won't study like this next year.

Anybody have the link to last years thread. I cant find the darn link.

Found it!

hey, i didn't receive any information either. i was just browsing the urbana college of medicine's website. if you go to www.med.uiuc.edu, on the left side of links there is one that says "student affairs." also, under M1, you can see the syllabuses, book lists and other information for classes from this past year. i'd rather not waste money on books that my friends that are M2's and M3's at other medical schools can give me.

For the record, we're the second largest thread in this School-Specific Forum by number of posts. I guess size does matter (relax guys, talking about how we're the largest med school in the US)! Good job to all of us neurotic pre-meds! 👍

Just got into UIC! How is everyone coping with the 75K/year debt?

Protodoc, are you Rockford or Peoria? I believe you are on the UPR track. Seems like so many people on here got Chicago. Did you end up sending a petition?

I'm Rockford track. I know!! I really am thankful to have gotten in and I know I shouldn't complain, but I started getting envious again after seeing how so many people are getting Chicago now! If only I were able to get off work just for that one morning, I would have dropped off that site card and gotten Chicago. Darn!

Yeah, I don't want to complain and in the end, I will be happy with wherever I am placed. I just prefer Chicago, but I know there are pros and cons to both campuses. I too wish I had mailed out my card the Monday I received it instead of waiting until Tuesday. I figured everyone got Chicago until the January group. They changed it up this year and they must have soem system on deciding who goes to which campus.

Did you see the M1 orientation packet posted earlier? I saw the exam schedule and we take exams for 6 classes on certain days! I hope it's not 6 separate exams...

I wouldn't beat yourselves up over turning in the site card asap. I was in the Dec. batch, turned it in early and still got placed in the UPR track. I think they just have a different system this year. It's rough to just have to sit and wait, for sure!

I keep telling myself in just two months I should know which campus and I can start looking for a place and getting in the mindset of school, whatever campus it is. I turned my card in the very next morning after getting it (accepted in the Nov batch) but some of my Nov peers got their first choice and others didn't :/ tough luck. Who knows? Maybe I'll get reassigned and I'll look back and wonder why I was stressin.

I had this, but I mailed my site preference card in about 10 minutes ago... did anyone see a change?

I received a UMed interview invite today by email attachment. The attachment was dated on 4/2/09. Again, I am withdrawing so hopefully this opens up another spot in that program. The attachment says they received over 85 applications, and there are 24 seats in the program. It seems like they may be interviewing everyone since the email was generic but I'm not sure.

Good luck to all!!

Just got my acceptance letter!!! My first med school acceptance, in my second year of applying. I was starting to get pretty disappointed there. Really nice to know that I'll finally be in med school in a few months. REALLY nice.

Anyway, the big question is campuses. I'm OOS (New York), my s/o is an RN who will be starting her nurse practitioner program (in Chicago? possibly) this fall. I'm older than your average student (27 at start of school), and would really benefit from being in a city environment. I also don't have much interest in going to a random part of Illinois if I don't have to.

Is Chicago pretty much expected to be full by now (4/7)? Is it best to write a letter of rationale explaining why I would like to be in Chicago, along with my preference card? Or do I just have to wait til the Committee rules and then appeal if necessary? Is this purely an availability thing or is there some criteria they use to make the allotment?

Basically, I'm set to go to UIC (my only acceptance right now), but if I got a non-chicago campus and subsequently got into one of my other interviewed-at schools, I'd have to decide whether to stay there or not. Tuition's a factor too...

Thanks for any responses!

I also received a UMed interview and was wondering whether they interview everyone that applied. Anyone else receive an interview?

Also zipmedic, do you know anyone that has done the MD/MPH program and can answer questions about it? I'm trying to decide whether its worth the extra year of loans or if i should just wait until residency. Any help would be great.

haha... all my hopes dashed with your one post! 😛

I'm assuming it changes to your "actual" assignment after a few days. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
