They sent out some today, but the rest will be going out hopefully tomorrow.

Bump.

Who's going to be in NY next week?

Don't worry guys, several ladies have generously offered to host you all if they can't find you male hosts 😀

But yeah don't worry you will have a room. Worst thing that could possibly happen is you have to double up rooms.

Hey all --

If you're another student in the Columbia-Bassett program who is planning to go to the revisit weekend, PM me so that we can try to meet up specially. I'd love to get to know some of my future Cooperstown classmates.

anyone know when we get our financial aid packages? do they give it to us during revisit? ever since i saw my mich package, i've been having a heart attack just thinking about the packages from other schools. anyone know what the average graduating debt is? (yes, i know, it's not really accurate, but just interested in a ballpark figure).

for current students:

-how is the area around columbia? is it safe? how about at night if i am a girl?
-how easy is it to get out to the rest of the city?
-how easy is it to get between cornell and columbia presbyterian? if you do an away rotation there would it be a horrible commute?

Bump bump?

And, I actually meant to ask about the commute from Columbia to the Cornell NYP and Sloan-Kettering area.

Getting to MSKCC/ Cornell from P&S is doable, but it is not the easiest commute. You are looking at a 50 min trip that includes walking a decent amount.

There aren't any subways that go very close to Cornell NYP. And, those that do are east side lines, whereas Columbia runs along the west side lines. So, it'd either involve taking the subway far downtown (A train) until you can switch to an east side line (6 train)...or getting off around Lincoln Center, walking through the park, and across all the way to the river. This takes A LONG TIME.

Usually if you do rotations away (depending) you can get temporary housing. I'm not sure if this is the case if the medical school is in the same city though.

You can take a subway downtown on the west side and then a cross town bus. You'll end up walking about a block from the bus to Cornell. Google directions says the trip will take 40 minutes.

You can take the 1 down and then take the 72 or 66 crosstown bus over. Still ends up being 40-50 min but only costs $2.25.

You beat me to it!

If you have your little tan financial aid brochure, I believe that its in there. Maybe someone else has it handy? I unfortunately don't.

Area around Columbia is very safe (but its still a city. Don't leave you laptop by itself in an empty cafe, etc). Part of that is because of the fact that you are essentially never alone around campus, the medical complex is just too populated. At night, once again its a city, but if you are walking around campus you are safe. Plenty of security, police, pedestrians, etc around. Also, if you live off campus you have the option of having a campus security car drive you home. I'm not a girl though, so definitely ask some girls if you are coming to revisit. If not, PM me with your email and I'll set up a correspondence

-Extremely easy to get down town. 20ish minute ride on the A train to Columbus Circle and a few minutes walk from a nearby stop to Times Square. 10 minute ride to the undergrad campus. When we have interschool mixers we are usually the first to arrive downtown. As someone else mentioned, a lot of the other schools are not directly on a subway line (enormous inconvenience in my opinion, but then again I don't use the buses much) or are on a local line. We have the express lines.

I've never made the commute myself, but people definitely make it down there. This is especially true during the summer because a lot of first years do a Sloane Kettering research project. I believe there are ways to get housing or arrange a switch if you choose to do a rotation down at NYH, I personally recommend living down there just because the commute is a hassle (it is doable).

Fire up for Revisit!

Hehe, am I not a New Yorker. That was my advice based off my experiences living in the sixth borough (Philly) and visiting NY at least a few times a year. Which, yeah, means way less experience than you native NYers with the MTA. I also withdrew from Columbia so I have no idea why I'm posting on this thread.

bumping this for funsies.

who else is dying to get off the waitlist? i'm thinking about sending another update letter in a week and a half or so.

Anyone hear anything from their continued interest letter after WL 😕

I don't have the official line on this, but apparently we have reached the point where second interviews are starting to be offered.

aw, shucks. well, thanks for letting us know. i think you win the "most helpful med student" award for this cycle 🙂

So am I to assume it is only those people who are offered a 2nd interview that are at the top of the WL and close to getting an offer????

Or maybe they are on the fence or the applicant wasn't interviewed by a dean initially. I bet if Dean Frantz or Dean Nicholas interviewed you initially, you might not need a second interview since they know you already...

Most people I know were not interviewed by Drs Frantz or Nicholas and that includes people who were already accepted... so I think that theory may be flawed

how do they notify people for second interviews? mail? phone? (i'm guessing not e-mail). do we need to send another LOI in order to get a response/2nd interview invite? (i have very little to update since my letter in march but am still committed to columbia and can just say that again...and again...)?

2nd interviews are much more of a response to students, though I have heard of students being contacted unsolicited too. 2nd interviews also tend to be so that the waitlist committee (which is essentially the Deans as far as I know) has had personal contact with students. So if you interviewed with Dean Frantz in the past you weren't as likely to get a second interview with Dean Frantz (which is not to say that you couldn't get more contact time with him, just not a formal second interview). Now that Dean Nicholas is around as well things might not be the same, only time will tell.

All that being said, 2nd interviews are a good sign. I know that some people get accepted during the interview or quickly afterwards, so I look at the start of this 2nd interviewing process next week or so as the beginning of waitlist movement as well.

I don't have the official line, nor do I know the past experience. Those that I have spoken to this cycle said that they got an email from Dr. Nicholas, but they were doing phone 2nd interviews. If its been a month feel free to consider sending another letter.

Where are people sending waitlist letters? Via snail mail? Or specifically to one of the deans' emails? To the general admissions email?

Send them to the admissions email or to the admissions office by snail mail. Your choice, I prefer snail mail. Then again, I also take and compile notes by hand 😀.

As far as financial aid goes, feel free to call the office. I can dig it up if needed, but I personally can't inquire about that.

Yeah they gave me mine at revisit weekend.

how was revisit weekend by the way?? eager waitlistee dying to know! any tantalizing "P&S is ridiculously awesome"-type tidbits that may make this waiting game all the more heart-wrenching? 😛

Honestly, I didn't get to talk with all that many people, but I really liked those that I did.

I skipped a lot of the actual scheduled events--it became clear half-way through some of them that I had already read the information on the website. So I got out to see a little of what NYC has to offer.

But to answer your question another way, I withdrew from almost all of my other schools today. P&S is the place for me.

awesome 🙂 thanks for sharing!

but if you log in to the Columbia FinAid website, does it give you numbers or just links to disbursement, etc

No I can't see it on the website. You should call them and ask. I'm sure they'll be able to tell you over the phone.

Waitlist movement has started apparently.

When you say "apparently" does that mean that you know people have been accepted off the WL as of yesterday or that people that are having 2nd interviews will begin to be offered acceptances?

someone posted in another thread that they got in off the WL. i forget which thread-- i think it was BU? or NYU? anyway they posted to say they were withdrawing after getting into columbia.
