Dont feed the troll. LOL. You are exactly right, Mosspoh. As for the second article, I am pretty sure its common for Professors to claim first author/inventor on their student's work . I can't say that I agree with the process but it probably would allow for some continuity for a program as those students move on. The engineering student isnt the first pissed off student and wont be the last due to having to share their work with their professor(dont mind the lab/equipment and expertise that was involved). It's not plagiarism, its called the benefit of already having multiple letters after your name.

Based off of the grammar and spelling, its probably a gator fan 😉

I know I shouldn't feed it, but there will be SOMEONE that takes that for word. I should've walked away for a few minutes and came back to write rather than just hacked away at the keyboard.

I'm not even hardcore FSU. I stick by my Nittany Lions, but there is never a reason to trash any school on these boards. I thought back on it and realized that if the student was doing everything in the professor's lab with the professor's equipment then it is pretty much his anyway. That is why many inventors save their best ideas for their own time. They don't want the company owning it and shafting them out of tons of cash.

Hey, I did some research as an undergraduate while at FSU and I'm pretty sure when you sign on to do a DIS (undergrad research) it says something about novel discoveries belonging to the PI. At least that is how is was in the Biology Department. Although I can appreciate the frustration with the perceived injustice....

....Anyhow, i'm strugglin' a little bit to write the self-critical essay lol. Didn't we do this in our personal statement! lol...oh well, take a shot, grab a beer and keep writing...

I think it comes easier to some people than others. One of the things that FSU is really big on is giving feedback and comments. I've filled out so many comment forms that I'm nearly sick of them already. Self-awareness is an important thing in people, but doctors in particular. So, just see it as an opportunity to reflect on what things you need to work on as a person or previous mistakes you made that you learned from.

I can't remember exactly what I talked about, but I can be pretty sure it involved my poor study habits early on and my tendencies to be easily distracted, as well as me learning to take criticisms. If you could tell by my earlier rant, I tend to take things personally and it is a bit of struggle for me to simply take that breath and let things slide. 😉

Write a critical analysis of your personal and scholastic qualifications for the study of medicine and the realization of your professional ambitions.

Im kinna surprise that alot of people are having a tough time with the critical analysis essay. I just follow the prompt and list out those things and wrote a few sentences for each thing. It did sound like a personal statement though!!

For all you first time applicant, once you finish all your secondaries for all the schools. you will have talk about yourself so much that by the end you will be great at selling yourself to anybody 😀

I'm just bumping it because I want to keep us near the top baby.

Yea, self critical essay doesn't mean write what's bad about you or make excuses. Just explain what would make you a good physician. Done.

Hey all,

I have questions about the ED process. Is there a way to specify to which program we are applying? I want to apply regular because I don't want to be restricted.

Do I have to wait to submit until after 1 August or is there a "select this if..." button that I can't seem to find?

Thanks for the help!

* That's 15 August, my apologies. The USF COM ED application deadline is 1 August.

Never mind...

The thought occured to me to check the e-mail that was sent to me informing me of the online secondary. In the e-mail, my due date is 31 December, the regular admission date.

I guess I chose regular admission when I selected "Regular M.D." on my AMCAS application.

I hope this helps someone else. My apologies for the public monologue...

Yea, if you chose to apply EDP process they'd moderate it at the AMCAS end. The only way to apply to more schools during EDP is to do osteopathic at the same time, which I've known plenty of people to do. Although, it is technically not allowed.

The second story doesn't jive. It is poorly written and on a random site. Grants are tough to come by during these times. I have a hard time believing that an undergrad in engineering would have the training and foresight to independently research and develop something that gets a grant of nearly half a million dollars. I am sure that a story written from the perspective of the person wronged isn't biased at all.

I am insulted that you come here with your created one-post name and indirectly trash the education I am receiving. The university isn't "saling the cheap degree". The vast majority of students have worked hard and honestly for their degree and have been taught by fine and honest professors. Go pi$$ someone else off now.

Based on the sunshine law, you can call Office of Research at FSU to request a copy of the email for the case related to the faculty Jim P Zheng that Dr. Kemper sent to me. Please contact me [email protected] if they deny the existing of the email.

It is the exact case that FSU high ranking administrators told me that situation that "plagiarism is normal" in US universities. Do you think it is true?

There are lots of fine and honest professors at FSU, that is why lots of the students came to FSU. However, if the academic integrity can not be followed, a few of the immoral faculties can spoil all of the university.

FSU is going to argue against vacating-of-victories. If FSU win the rebuttal, do you think it is fair to the most of the student-athlete who follow the rules?

If the cheating is normal to student-athlete, FSU president T. K. Wetherell got three degrees from FSU including PhD and he is a former football game player at FSU Seminal. Do you think it is most likely that T.K. Wetherell did cheating too?

The student-athlete is a student who is a candidate for degree. Most of them will start their career in various fields besides the game player. If the cheating is normal to them, who will respect their cheap degree? Don't you think that the student-athlete needs to be respected as other students?

You know that there are lots of person who violates the traffic rules every day, most of them were not caught by policeman. Do you think it is unfair that the policeman give a ticket to a person who violated the rule because he may be just one of the guys who violated the traffic rules.

One more thing I have to say is that Plagiarism is not just a issue of ethic, it is a issue to damage the victim's whole academic effort for new career. Furthermore, if the research funding is involved, it is a serious issue to wast taxpayers' money.

A **** will spoil whole the soup. That is the logic and the ethic standard that the civil society can understanding.

Fighting for higher ethic standard please, fighting to pretect your students' rights from the irresponsible and low quality student service please!

By the way, I have to tell you that creative contribution to research is necessary to get PhD degree. You student is not a stupid in research!

Interesting to me, I applied EDP and was complete on July 1st. When I inquired about the timeframe for review and possible interview I was told FSU will begin inviting EDP's for interviews mid-August. So much for the rolling admissions cycle and early notification. If I would have known that I wouldn't have expedited my application. Sorry for the rant...Thoughts?

That sucks man - call them out on it and see what they say.

For the critical analysis essay I wrote about my work at a health clinic and why I wanted to be a doctor, i didnt talk about any flaws or bad grades, is that ok. And for the .miscellaneous essay I wrote about the challenges I had with my research project do you guys think thats ok or should I write about something more personal and less academic.

From FSU Secondary Application (3) Self-Critical Analysis

From Answers.com-
Self-Critical-
"Critical of oneself and one's faults and weaknesses."

They are asking you to be critical of yourself...so I would write something along those lines. That's what I did anyhow.

For the misc. essay you could write about anything you feel they wouldn't normally learn about you from other information you've provided. I wrote a few bullets that were important to me that I wanted them to know. Hope this helped.🙂

That's when EDP is for nearly everywhere on the planet...If you interview around the third week in August or even the beginning of September then you will know within one to two weeks post interview. That is about as early as early notification can get. I filled out every secondary as soon as I got it last year which was beginning of july or earlier. I was the FIRST interview group at one school, and that was September 11. I was the second at another and that was a week later. I didn't know at those schools for 2/3 weeks. (I found out the same day). I was complete at FSU beginning of July as a non EDP and didn't even interview till the end of October. Many of my friends interviewed there second half of the year.

The EDP people all knew whether they were accepted before October even rolled around. In medical admissions that is early but it is also the risk. That is why I don't recommend EDP unless you are a very strong applicant and have nowhere else you'd consider going.

For the critical analysis essay, like Nuke1601 said i think you should include some weaknesses or challenges that you have faced and how you overcame them. We all make mistakes and have weaknesses so I think you have to talk about it. For me I mention, overcoming the language barrier and average mcat score. I talk about how mcat score doesnt measure your desire for medicine and such.

Quit looking so much into it guys! They aren't trying to ask a question and pull a fast one on you! The entire point is to develop the picture of you as a person. The most important thing is for it to be a well written and cohesive story. Not all of us have encountered significant trials in our lives. As far as weaknesses, we all have them. You just have to be honest with yourself and put it on paper.

I know it feels like everyone else applying saved some village of orphans in africa by carrying them on their back through the jungle for 5 days while curing cancer and founding a non-profit, but the truth is that nearly everyone applying is just like you. So, make it well written to keep it interesting but don't sweat the small stuff too much. Oh, and for the love of god, don't lie. They will most likely ask you during the interview about this stuff.

Hurry up and wait...you are right MossPoh, if I hear something by late August that is early compared to other applicants. I Appreciate the perspective.🙂

No prob bud. I understand your feelings though. There is so much pressure to get everything in early and then you sit there for months. Every email, letter, or phone call has the vague scent of hope and anticipation attached to it. It is really hard for me to believe that at this time last year I was in the exact same position. The whole process teaches you a lot about yourself. It is truly exhausting, especially when in conjunction with classes. (I took a 13 credit hours while driving and flying around the US)

Also, note that I didn't bite the second time with the fsumiscon person. I just put them in the ignore pile so I never notice it again. Be proud of me. 😛

Ok I submitted my secondary like 6/29...should it take this long for my letters to be added and to be complete?

Yeah FSU takes a few (3-4) weeks to finish all that up...On the secondary it says that processing may take 3-4 weeks, so I shouldn't be too worried. Now if it was 8/29 I would freak. Don't forget to e-mail the picture to them, make sure it isn't the little things that are keeping you back...

ok, thanks. I read that few weeks thing but in my neurotic state I just figured it was an exaggeration and they just forgot about my application 🙂 I'll calm down now

Does anybody know how many people get interviews (regular decision) out of the people who submit secondaries to FSU?

Hey, I've got a few friends that made it into last year's class...I think they interview around 350. But a neat thing FSU has is the Bridge Program. If you are good enough to get in, but for some reason don't get accepted they put about 20 people in the bridge program in which you do a course work first year and then if you pass with a "B" average you are accepted into the next class. It's almost like an in-house SMP.

We have 10 bridge students this year. It really is focused towards the URM or person from a very underserved area.

Thanks MossPoh...I wasn't sure EXACTLY how many were in the Bridge, but I did know it was for URM/underserved because I am Native American who grew up in an extremely underserved area lol. Guess I got the best of both worlds there, but hopefully I can get full acceptance somewhere! Got almost all of my secondaries, or an e-mail saying that I would get a secondary later this month, or early august! fingers crossed!

So much for EDP at FSU. I applied to DO schools also and received an interview invite this morning from NOVA. Why FSU waits is beyond me????

Haha. That's awesome. Nova's a good school, good luck

When is the interview? I mean, nova might just be rocking it this year because I was complete there in beginning of july and never heard anything till August. Seriously, you're going to be fine. Don't worry about it. EDP is in relation to normal interviews. You get priority before everyone else that is non-EDP. We have a fraction of the staff that Nova has as well.

Yea I know...damn worry bug.😀 My NOVA interview is Aug. 20th. Things are looking brighter already, as this has been a gut wrenching 2 years(post-bacc) of anticipation, exams, worry, stress, worry, stress, and of course the MCAT. But hey it's only an interview...best not count my chickens right. Really looking forward to hearing from FSU though.

I talked to people that already go there. They didn't bring up flaws - critique can be both positive and negative, and selling yourself is the goal here. "WHY will you make a good physicians," is really the question. Ask.com won't get you into med school. You're fine.

Hmm...is that really the question? I'd stick to what FSU is asking, and I don't recall a question that says "why will you make a good physician". You should have already conveyed that in the personal statement. Maybe the folks you spoke with were superstars and could have wrote about their favorite pet pony and still gotten accepted. BTW it's Answers.com.😎

Answers.com lol... they were no superstars - all had mediocre MCAT and GPAs. Highlight the characteristics you find would make you a good physician without directly saying it like that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-criticism

Highlight your qualities... no "HEY FSU, I SUCK BECAUSE _______." If in part of your criticism, you want to state some things you're working on improving w/ specific examples on what you're doing, I don't think that could hurt.

That last question, the personal qualifications and why you want medicine, ... doesn't that sound like the personal statement for amcas? i would basically be just rewriting my personal statement for that secondary question.

any ideas on what i should do? i know i'm just going to be repeating myself...

Sum up some personal attributes that you think make a good physician. If that's what your PS was about, that's fine. Don't overthink this stuff! Reading these boards gives me a headache lol

Lol

Anyone heard anything lately? I haven't even gotten a complete e-mail/status yet.

You may not hear anything for a little bit longer. I have no evidence to back this up, but I remember last year that a few schools I called put admissions on the backburner till after the white-coat ceremony (August 14 for FSU). There has also been a TON of stuff going on around here. We have a new dean of student affairs (I think that is what it is), so he has to be brought up to speed as well. In addition, there were lots of meetings to solidify the curriculum and put some changes in place. (We no longer have required attendance for lectures) I'm not saying those are the reasons for any delay, but things have been pretty hectic around here. That is especially true in relation to the size of the admissions office.

Received my Complete e-mail this morning

I also received the complete email this morning. A previous poster said EDP will interview mid-august. Any idea on when the rest of us will hear back/expect to interview?

May 2010 😉

I am happy for this, i cant wait for next year

I don't understand why required attendance is such a big deal. If I go to a med school, I want there to be required attendance.

Because most premeds have the "I know it all" syndrome. Dangerous attitude to have for a future physician!
