Way to go, everyone!! Is anyone else interviewing on the 4th?

Still nothing from FSU...I was complete at the end of June! Looks like I should not count on anything from here. I really thought I matched everything they are all about, including stats...

Does anyone know how the 3rd and 4th year rotations work at FSU ? Since they're pretty much spread out all over the state...do you have to figure out your own housing every time ?

Also, what's the primary teaching style in the first two years ? Lecturing ?

You stay at one of the sites for the duration of clinical years.

Does your status page say Application Complete? I had everything in by the beginning of August, but never got the complete status until I emailed them to find out why. Hope this helps!!

For those of you that got in... just a friendly reminder 🙂

Done!😀

You are going to be assigned or entered in a lotto to pick which site you want. You will spend your 3rd and 4th year at that specific site. So you have to figure out your housing for those two years at whatever city you end up.

As for the teaching style, there will be lectures. In addition, you get to learn some clinical skills.

You can also have these questions answered at the interview. 😛

Do we get to decide where would like to go for the last 2 years, or are we assigned to a campus?

Based on what I understand, you enter a lotto.
And depending on when your name is drawn, you decide where you want to go. Some of the more popular sites will fill up faster than others. I hope this helps! 🙂

Yeah the status page has read complete/under review by adcom since 6/29 lol. I thought my essays were good...maybe too many typos that word didn't catch lol.

Which sites are the most popular?

Not knowing where I will end up doing my3rd and 4th year is the only thing that I dont like about this school.

I think Orlando is usually the first to fill every year.

Yeah, it's the only thing I don't like. I know they said the vast majority of students are happy at all the rotation sites, but the uber-planner in me has a hard time relinquishing control. I'm just not sure if it's a deal-breaker though.

Thats where I want to go right now but it can change. 2 years from now other sites may be better.

Same here.
I heard that all of the students end up liking where they end up.
My main concern is ending up in my hometown 😳....

Many people don't like it, but it might be after the fact. Some of the places aren't too exciting to live in or the rotation experience isn't that great.

Orlando is tremendously popular, yet I've never heard many great things about the rotation itself. There are lots of residents and there will also be other schools around town now with UCF and all. It is seen as a more traditional experience where you really don't get to do much. Sarasota also fills up really fast. Technically, Tallahassee is the first to fill up every year. The reason is because so many people have families and what not and really don't want to uproot again.

One of the sites that various faculty said has the best teaching and experience is Pensacola, yet most people don't go there because it is so far away from many people's homes.

Why is Sarasota so popular?
I know at Pensacola you won't be interacting with many residents...

That's good news. I would love to go back to Pensacola. Finding a new place to live with a dog and horse in tow would be a challenge though. Ah well, get accepted first, and I'll figure out the rest as it unfolds. Don't want to put the cart before the horse!

Are you from Pensacola?

Does anyone know how many seats are still open for the 2014 class? How much time is given for you to make your decision from when they give you the acceptance? I also heard that the school is pretty selective in their interviews and a large percentage of their interviewees are given acceptances. Is this true?

Lots of people from the area. Sarasota and Orlando look like major metropolitan areas relative to Ft. Pierce, Mariana and Daytona.

Pensacola does have some residents. There is a peds and obgyn residency there I believe, but not bad compared to Orlando. Ft. Pierce is chosen by a lot of people from that area, but you go to hospitals in 2 or 3 counties. I've heard good things about didactics at Daytona.

Tallahassee I've heard mixed things, especially or certain specialties/rotations.

A horse isn't that bad. Even in Tallahassee you can head just south to Wakulla county and find plenty of places probably. It'd equate to about a 30ish minute drive each day.

Thanks! I think I'd like Wakulla county. From what I can recall, a large portion of it is protected, correct?

Sillyshoes- I am actually from Central Fl but did my undergrad in Pensacola. I really miss it!

A fairly nice chunk is. Wakulla is very rural and if you need to buy groceries there aren't too many options. I do have to drive through about 5 minutes of protected land to get to my parents' house.

No one really know how many seats are still open. People hold on to many acceptances from different schools so its really hard a have a #.

You have until class starts to make up your mind about attending once you have been accepted. FSU has a deadline around May because they start classes in June 1.

Yes. But FSU has a better interview to acceptance ratio. Around 30%????

Someone else on here said that there is a 60% acceptance rate after interview...now I confused 😕. Plus, 30% is not that high...

I was told my friend at FSU that 1 in 3 at the interview gets in. I need that MSAR book for the stats!!

Got it! For 2007-2008 data, 372 interviewed and 119 matriculants, but it does not specifically say how many were offered acceptances. Ah well.

I was told during my interview that it's 60% acceptance once you are offered an interview...

60 percent of those who interviewed at FSU are offered admission. But nearly half of those who are admitted end up going to other schools for varies reasons.

FSU tends to have a lot of waitlist movement. A lot of people apply there simply because it is a state school and not because of their interest in the program. As much as I love my school, it is VERY different in personality from what many people search for in medical school. Gunners really aren't tolerated well here. You kind of become the butt of jokes if you get TOO gunnerish.

Interview here on Monday. What are some good hotels to stay at locally?

Use Priceline. I got a suite at the Residence Inn for $50.

The 2nd year students giving the tour said the same thing 👍

Definitely not true. I graduated from FSU COM in 2009. The sites for years 3 and 4 are as follows: Orlando, FL; Tallahassee, FL; Ft. Pierce, FL; Sarasota, FL; Pensacola, FL; Daytona Beach, FL; and Thomasville, GA. Through the history of FSU, it's pretty standard that 1) the Tallahassee site fills up quickly, as priority is given to people with a legitimate reason for a particular campus, and thus all the married people and people with kids stay in Tallahassee 2) the Orlando campus is by far the most popular every year and fills first, the Sarasota campus is a distant, but solid, second most popular and fills after that. 3) the Pensacola campus is the least popular site in Florida, as it is further away from home for pretty much everyone. This one consistently fills second to last, leaving only... 4) Thomasville, GA is the least popular because a) it is in a very small, very rural town that has NO social life for 20-somethings. b) you're there with only 3 or 4 other people, so if these people aren't your friends, you're lonely all the time.

Thus, I would say about 1/3 of the people are really happy with where they go, 15% of people are really upset with where they end up, and the rest are somwhere in between. And it's done completely by lottery (again, unless you have a legit reason for staying in a town... and no, Orlando being your home town does not qualify).

I think Orlando will always be the most popular, but it is going to go down a little bit considering UCF is there to fill up the spots even more. I was talking to a few faculty members here and they were saying that, for whatever reason, a lot of people seem to go into EM that went to Orlando.

Everything is pretty spot on though. The rotations at Thomasville (and Tallahassee) are supposed to be mediocre at best education wise.

Were you unhappy with where you did your rotations?
Congrats on graduating by the way.

Actually, I am not from Orlando.

This bodes well for me. Is location the only reason Pensacola is so unpopular, or are there other underlying issues with the educational program?

One of the sites that various faculty said has the best teaching and experience is Pensacola, yet most people don't go there because it is so far away from many people's homes.

I live in Pensacola and know some of the places FSU students rotate. They are with some very good physicians and practices in town, and while talking to them, they all seem very happy.

Actually, there are plenty of places for a horse in Pensacola, on the NW and N side of the city. You are basically still in town, so it's not like you have to live hours out.

3) the Pensacola campus is the least popular site in Florida, as it is further away from home for pretty much everyone. This one consistently fills second to last, leaving only....

Pensacola is far. I-110, the N/S interstate is at exit 12 and TLH exits start around 199. My parents live on the N side of Orlando and it takes 7 hours to drive there.

The biggest problem is the I-10 drive--one would have thought that astronaut would have come to her senses between Pensacola and Lake City!

Pensacola is not bad. There's lots of restaurants, some that are very good, local places. There's all the shopping you could need, there is a mall with Dillard's, Belk, etc. No fancy department stores, but I imagine there's none in TLH either. New Orleans is only 3 hours away. In the summer, every Thursday night there is music in the park downtown--people bring blankets, snacks, wine, beer and listen to music. Every Tues is the McGuire's running club--fun. There are 2 non-stop flights/day between Pensacola and Orlando, and also between Pensacola and Tampa. The beaches are fabulous and lots of great places to rent on the beach. It's small and will be an adjustment for some, but there's really no rush hour and I would imagine 3rd and 4th years are pretty busy anyway. Good Luck everyone.

I was accepted to FSU, but declined, so I hope one of you gets it! The school seems awesome. Good Luck everyone!

I interviewed here yesterday! school was beautiful! Everything seemed new and shiny. Tallahassee was pretty nice too (from what I saw). It seemed like a Southern town, not at all like Ft. Lauderdale (where I am from).

I should be hearing Friday, since they moved next week's subcomittee meeting to Thursday because of the holidays. AHHH! :xf:

Just received an interview invite. Is there any benefit to the morning or afternoon session? Thanks

I chose morning because I'd rather eat AFTER the interviews. It's much more relaxed and stress-free to discuss with the Med Students and other interviewees then.
