Hi all. Are any in state applicants still waiting on their supplementary packet of information from IU? I still haven't received mine as of today...although I haven't checked the mail yet 🙂

According to IUSM's admissions website: "Dean of Students Evaluation: To be completed by the Dean of Students, or by the office which maintains student disciplinary records on your undergraduate campus. Please do not refer the form to an academic dean unless he or she meets the above criterion. The Dean of Students Evaluation form is not part of the AMCAS Letters of Evaluation/Recommendation program. The IU School of Medicine Admissions Office will provide the Dean of Students Evaluation form to applicants the Admissions Committee selects to interview."

This sounds like an invite for interview is imminent 🙂

Good luck to all of you!

Just got the packet and want to point on the last bullet point on the reverse side of the cover sheet that says:

"Personal Interview: Applicants are usually invited for an interview within four to six weeks after receipt of this packet."

In other words, I think this is considered an interview invite if you don't have any academic disciplinary actions or criminal record to release. Woo!

BBender, are you an In-State EDP applicant as well?

Nope. Sorry, I'm OOS, regular. One of the lucky ones! ...maybe because I get some kind of bonus for being an IL resident... maybe?

I also received the packet from IU today!!! Does that mean we can expect an interview in the future? The packet seems to indicate so right?

Certainly seems so unless you really have some nasty stuff on your record. Sweeeet deal! Congrats, man!

The supplemental packet is indeed a verification that you have been granted an interview. They will not tell you about your interview until one month before it is scheduled. So congrats and welcome to the waiting game (its a long one). SDN has pages dedicated to interviews complete with sample questions and tips on how to get there, where to stay, etc. It is a really good thing to check out.

IUSOM interviews are not bad at all. usually one clinicians and one basic medical science prof interview for 30 minutes. They have limited info about you (essentially your application without any numbers). Most interviewers are not on the admissions committee. They make a report that goes in your file and that is about it. Interview days have 100+ applicants and last from 7:30ish to 4. Lunch with current students, financial aid session, tour, etc.

For in state regular applicants with the minimum GPA and MCAT (3.2 & 25 all subjects >6), you will be granted an interview. However there is no telling when they will schedule that interview. It is not necessarily in the order the applications were received. Good luck and stay positive.

Does anybody know what the stats are on how many OOS interview versus acceptance? I really like Indiana, as I spent a summer on their campus many years ago. I got the packet yesterday, and I just wanted a rough idea of the probability of acceptance after an interview. I know at some schools the interview is yours to screw up, others they are still very competitive?

Thanks!

should we send our LOR's to IU even if we have not received notice of them WANTING our LOR's? I received that e-mail saying they got my primary and will be notifying me later on w/any decisions. I am not sure if I am supposed to send out my LOR's now or only if they contact me with an email saying they want them...

IU accepts LORs through AMCAS. You should submit your LORs as soon as possible.

I got a review notice on 6/26, but haven't gotten a rejection e-mail. I'm OOS, so is this a good sign at this point in time?

Yes. Definitely a good sign. There was a wave of OOS rejection emails about 2 weeks ago. I didn't hear any news and received an invite a couple days ago! It's through snail mail so you just may be further away.

Don't get my hopes up!! I didn't get the rejection email, and I am in Alaska so the mail always takes an extra day or two...

but this was really kind of a reach school for me...

We shall see.🙂

just got rejected from these guys. i'm OOS. oh well.

Hi all, I just received my supplementary packet. I was looking over the dean of students' evaluation.

Considering I've never met the dean of students, will this work against me? It seems to be a very personal, subjective form, instead of a evaluation of my academic honesty and things of that sort.

Anybody else wondering about this?

Thanks, and good luck.

New to the forum, I figured I had something to add to one of the threads when I had a ridiculous 6 hour turnaround from submission to verification of my AMCAS.

Figured I would post here. I applied via EDP yesterday, got the generic email receipt notification and just waiting on hearing from them. I am in state (Anyone from Southern Indiana pm me!)

I did too. To complicate the issue: I only have a year at my post-bacc university, and I am a long time out from my undergraduate. Even if I was still a student at that Big Ten school, I'd be a nobody to the dean.

But if your read the form literally, you are going to waive the right to see the evaluation, and therefore it is out of your hands anyways. If they fail to fill out the form, not your problem, right? Furthermore, they stress that you must give it to someone on your campus who meets their definition of overseeing student records. So you are sort of obligated to give it to them anyways. If you have no choice, don't sweat about it, okay?

Also, since there are a few forms to send in, I used the single labeled return envelope they supplied me for the dean's letter. I stamped it and handed it in with the form, so that there was a minimal probability of it getting lost in the mail. Plus, the more convenient you make it for the office, the quicker it will be sent.

Monday morning I walked into the office and talked to manager of the dean of student affairs. I went early when they opened up because I wanted to see her reactions when she wasn't rushed. She chuckled, and implied that this isn't unusual. They have a canned statement that says "our policy is that we can only state that there is nothing adverse in the records of this student" or something to that affect.

It boils down to this: In the past they were probably looking for a signed third party statement that you haven't been disciplined. They likely wanted to just have their form filled out (remember the office is already swamped with letters of eval, personal statements, etc...) However, in response they received a substantial amount of personal letters back from some deans (probably from smaller liberal arts colleges, which is cool). They don't want this to be an open invitation for more letters. To avoid inviting more non-uniform paperwork to their office, they likely decided to just allow for space on the form (notice it encourages them to write additional information on the backside? As someone who has had to make forms for business in the past this is a not-so-subtle clue that they don't want anything else attached)

I could make a loose analogy to how nicer restaurants give kids paper to doodle on as a "premptive strike" to avoid having them destroy their fine tablecloths or bring other books and toys in...but that would be patently offensive.

The goal is to have their form signed with no indication of disciplinary actions against you first and foremost.

In some ways, this is also a courtesy to the deans: it frees them from having to write more than a few words on a form.

I am sure that if a dean knew a student really well, then he would have submitted a letter in support of his application anyways.

Sorry for the free-flowing thought stream.

Uh, and on further note, I think you personally don't have to worry too much, ashish89, since you are an IU student, they might even know your dean by first name...I know its IUPUI's campus, and I know you are applying EDP, but if I were you I really wouldn't sweat this one. Home court advantage and all...and on that note I think I know were you are going... 🙂

Hi all, just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

In terms of forms (stuff) we need to turn in...

1. Dean of Students' Evaluation
2. Legal Disclosure Form
3. Application Fee Envelope
4. Photograph

Also, what did you guys use that envelope for? When I gave my dean of students' form to the IU student ethics office, they didn't need an envelope.

So...I'm just using the envelope for the legal disclosure and photograph. Any thoughts?

Other than the change of address form, that's all I sent in, and I read the packet about four times.

Of course, you used the payment envelope for the check you sent (or whatever)

As for the general envelope...
I had half a mind to give everything to my dean's office and have them stuff it all in the that envelope...Then I thought better and gave the envelope to them and just made my own for the rest of the stuff.

Hope that helps too.

good to hear guys and gals. I'm extremely excited for the interview.

Now it just comes down to a few more weeks of waiting :/

good luck to all! :luck::luck::luck::luck:

Yeah, I just got rejected from them after not having gotten the e-mail for nearly a month. Ah well! I was expecting this with all the other grim news from OOS applicants.

Me too!!! Oh well... good luck to you at the rest of your schools and good luck to everyone still in the IU thread! :luck:

OOS, just got the packet over the weekend. Pretty pumped!

How long was the wait between getting the email that says they have gotten your primary, and the time when they let you know you were rejected or invited to interview?

do you remember how long it was from when they recieved your primary application to the time when they sent you the packet? (I am also an OOS'er!)

Hi all. I got my initial e-mail on June 25th, and received my supplementary packet about 4 weeks later (July 27th-ish). I am instate, but when I called the admissions office wondering about my status, they said allow up to 4-6 weeks for the suppmentary packet to arrive.

I hope this helps.

Good luck to everybody.

A very similar timeframe for me as well.
I am an in-state applicant.

First rejection...im OOS so it was expected. Good luck to the rest who are still in the running for an interview.

I received the Application Receipt Notification from IUSM on June 25th
and just got the supplementary packet on August 3rd. I am an Illinois resident, so there may be hope for some of us OOS midwesterners!

I had a question... what kinds of letters qualify for the "Personal Evaluation" letter?? This isn't something required by most schools, so I'm not too familiar with what they are looking for. Thanks in advance =)

I'm OOS Michigan...June 25th for me as well, supplementary packet July 25th...pretty much one month between the two.

Hope that helps.

They are looking for character and fitness. So this inherently should be somebody who has known you 1) beyond the formal classroom and 2) for more than a short time.

I'm older than you kiddies 🙂, so I have professional references as well as academic ones uploaded to AMCAS from people I've worked for or with for many years.

I would suggest you get a letter from someone who can talk about your qualities as a person and how they feel that they would be relevant to your career choice as a physician. Of course, if this person is also a doctor, their evaluation holds much more weight.

Think of this as an opportunity to get a letter from a mentor or manager you have known.

Hi all.

Has anybody gotten a confirmation of being complete at IU after sending the supplementary packet?

Hi all.

Has anybody gotten a confirmation of being complete at IU after sending the supplementary packet?

Nope! Haven't heard anything back from IUSM since I sent the supp. packet.

has anyone who has gotten their packet applied edp?

Yes, I'm EDP as well. I've only received the supplementary packet and have submitted all of its forms. I'm currently just waiting for IUSM to respond.

i am not EDP...

people have already started sending it back? i haven't even read it yet. i just read the first page and was so excited that i wanted to stay on that high and not ruin it. lol

yup edp. I submitted in the last few days of september so now here comes the waiting game...

Nope! Haven't heard anything back from IUSM since I sent the supp. packet.

I got an email from the admissions office today, asking me to fill out the application to prove that I qualify for the Indiana "resident" status, along with copies of relevant documents. The email said that they were unable to verify my resident status from my AMCAS application.

This could be something specific to just my application .. but I wanted to share it with all the prospective applicants waiting to hear from IUSM.
