anyone know the stats for invites and acceptances. I know they have about 875 interviews and 160 person class. But how many people do they accept, I am guessing around 240 or slightly more than that.

Two years ago, I was put on the waitlist, and they sent me an e-mail like 2-3 weeks before school started wondering if I still wanted to remain on the waitlist, so it's a pretty waitlist heavy school.

Most schools are pretty waitlist heavy in the med school word assuming you get an interview... judging that they probably invited you to interview because they were very interested in your application and had already deemed you worthy of being accepted. While a terrible interview may change their mind, they want to make sure to accept enough students and leave as many possible on reserve to fill their class.

I have no idea where I ranked, but Colorado, for instance, only accepts 2/3 of the people off the waitlist.. historically, the top 1/3 are accepted, and the middle third is questionable, whereas the bottom third is rejected.

But I remember NYU being one of those schools where a lot of people from the class came in off the waitlist. Course, I imagine people drop NYU in favor of other schools due to the cost.

don't give up and stop this nonsense thinking just because you applied a week earlier and haven't heard back, it's a lost cause. it's NOT.

Great advice. I stopped the nonsense of looking through these threads for interview invites and completion dates about a month ago. It was tremendously liberating.

Point: DO NOT "get wrapped around the axle" (as a friend from Naval Special Warfare would put it) with regard to SDN. It's just not worth the unnecessary stress you will induce upon yourself.

If you did everything right up to now, the interviews will come. You will get some at places you did not expect. You will not even get a look at some you were expecting. It's simply the luck of the draw. Dwelling on SDN school threads is not going to change things.

Also, great to see someone who didn't have huge numbers shelling everyone in MS-1 when it really counts.

I'll be interviewing at NYU in November and wanted to ask any current students on this thread about the housing and living expenses. In the MSAR, NYU estimates other/living costs at the insanely low amount of $14,800. Is this an accurate figure? What are the housing options actually like (dorms, studios, 1br apts)? Are you guaranteed housing as a med student? If you own a car, are there affordable parking options?

i can't answer most of those questions as i'm not a current student, but i am a 5+ year resident of NYC. so i can say DO NOT BRING A CAR! you will be kicking yourself for wasting the money on it. i promise.

i interviewed at nyu recently and i can tell you a little bit about the housing situation. i'm sure current students would know much more than i do.

it seemed to me like most freshmen and some sophomores are put in rubin hall, which is similar to a college dorm. of course, everyone has singles, but there is still a communal bathroom. the housing is very cheap. the monthly rent for rubin seems to be around $650-$700. this includes electricity, cable, internet, etc.

the other major residence hall is greenberg, which i believe has studios and apartments. rent is more expensive (obviously), but i still think under $1000.

basically, housing at nyu is very affordable. especially considering that you'd be living in manhattan.
 
Yep, rent in Rubin is about $650... including heat/electricity/cable/internet. I wouldn't call it luxurious, but it is comfortable, everyone has their own room, and just an elevator ride away from class. Pretty good setup!

Some people will hear mid December. Everyone will hear first week of March.

There is an underground garage right there, on 1st Avenue, beneath the med center, between 30th and 31st. You should check first to see if it is open to the public...

There are other garages on side streets, like along 34th and 35th...may have to walk a few blocks...

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing.

The long, drawn-out, silent rejection is such crap.

Obviously we can't be sure that's what NYU is doing, but generally speaking I really wish all schools had the courtesy to just let us know that they're not interested.
 
Just got my complete email today, submitted first week of September.

In for the long wait...
 
I've been complete since Aug 6, but have heard nothing back from them except the status has been "UNDER REVIEW". Should I call or should I continue waiting?

Doesn't NYU interview through like..March? Cmon, guys, I don't understand SDN's whole "I don't have an interview in the first rounds..they MUST be silent rejecting me.."

haha Yeah I know. I think there is a paranoia that if they passed over you once, they won't come back to your application, though there seems to be a good deal of anecdotal evidence that they could in fact come back to you, want to interview you, and eventually accept you. An acceptance in March is every bit as good as one in October (well, maybe not quite as good since one in October can save you some anguish and money). But it's hard to wait when you KNOW that they have been interviewing and accepting people who have submitted after you... I think my life would be much easier if I could just stop visiting this site. It's just addictive to get information about what a school you're interested in is doing at any given time...

No, seriously though, you're right.

We do need to relax and settle in for what is a very long process.

hey, guess what-- at 3 of the 4 schools you just mentioned, my complete date had been "passed over" before i got the interview invite. and i did not make one single whiny post about silent rejections; i took it like a big girl and tried to be patient. so... :d

Also, I spoke with a friend of mine who went through the app cycle last year and he said he got 4-5 interviews after new years - including one in march. He is at a top 10 school now.

Just thought that 4-5 interview invite stat, post new years, might be comforting for anyone else stressing out about being passed over! I know it made me relax a little.
 
Anyone know how to get to NYU from Bayside, Queens? Or Flushing? (by car that is, my cousin lives there, most likely he'll drive me when I arrive at his house)

that's pretty crazy. I wonder what the circumstances are for you to have to be passed over initially but given an interview later.

Also, is there any worth in sending NYU updates, or do they not take them?

Thank you for this! I always freak out when I read all these "silent rejection" posts on SDN but only for a second till I come to my senses! Cmon guys! Most schools interview until March, some till April! Do you REALLY think that if you don't get an interview in October, you're done for?

That being said, I wish NYU would interview me nownownownownow! 😍

It could be the order of the secondaries received at a school, combined with them "scoring" your app, placing you in a pool of possible interviews in coming months...the early interviews seem to go to the folks who applied early (duh!) with the best apps (in terms of stats, at least) so many of these schools seem to be working down through the pile of acceptable interview candidates.
 
with that being said... for interviews in feb-april. those are most likely for spots on the waitlist tho huh?

From now (say Nov) to mid Feb, most certainly not.

Read last year's thread and form your own opinion...NYU sends out all decisions on or around March 1.

But because they start offering spots in the class starting in mid December, it seems that one's chances are better the earlier one interviews in the cycle, all else being equal.
