oooh well i got my Rush invite about 2-3 weeks after my MCW invite . . . maybe you're next :) seeing as how these are the only 2 schools that accepted me, maybe they are looking for the same things! (which bodes well for you)

don't get me wrong, MCW is a great school. i just didn't feel the 'fit' there like i did with Rush. but then again i am a chicago girl to the core, so your impressions may be a lot different!

I actually have quite a bit of clinical experience, and I'm a non-trad with work experience as well. So hopefully you're right! :) I totally know what you're talking about regarding "fit". I think I just really want a chance to take a look at Chicago and the schools around there. Keeping my fingers crossed. I'm really glad you found a place you love so much! Congrats on your acceptance!

sweet! i mean i am by no means an authority on all things Rush but you certainly sound like you'd fit right in. i'll keep my fingers crossed for you. :xf::luck: feel free to PM me too if you wanna compare notes more.

and good luck on your MCW interview!

anyone else get an email from Rush about them going to help in Haiti? that's cool and all, but how about an interview invite lol :p

does rush have an unofficial cutoff of 9 on each subsection of the MCAT?

good luck for your interview waiting. but yeah, rush is sending a couple of teams to haiti. one of our profs this year went in the first team.

My phone dinged at 1am because of this email. It woke me up. I grabbed my phone off the nightstand and my bleary eyesight fooled me into thinking it was an interview invite at first. Took me about 10 seconds to finally realize what it was. This was me after ---> :annoyed:

CONGRATS! Yay :D

yeah they told us "normally its 4-6 weeks but due to the holiday it might be longer." it was over christmas and new years . . . but still only took a month! i was prepared for a much longer and more agonizing wait.

are you still deciding between/ waiting on other schools, or do you think you'll be matriculating at Rush??

Thanks Mary :)

I have one other acceptance at MCW, and I am still waiting on a decision at Mizzou (my state school). Mizzou would be tempting if I get in due to the instate tuition, but I really like all three.

hmm that sounds familiar . . . i got into rush, mcw and am still waiting on my state school!

I wanted to stay in Chi-town though so I've ruled out MCW . . . and actually at this point if I got into U of I, the Chicago campus is probably full already. But I love Rush so much that I am pretty much sold on it no matter what happens!

. . . and see CaliMed, i told you there seems to be a Rush/MCW similarity. among other things, i think its the high mcat/lower gpa combo- we must be a good and undertapped population

Yeaaah let's hope you're right Mary!!! :xf: C'mon Rush, gimme an invite already! :p

Those of you that are post-interview:

How long did it take to hear back from Rush?

Did anyone get waitlisted or put on hold? Do they do both, waitlist and hold, or just one of these options?

Have they rejected anyone post-interview?

Do you have to walk outside for the tour or anything on interview day or is everything in the professional building?

mine took a month and 3 days but it was over Christmas/New Years so it might have been a tiny bit longer than average. It seems like people on here are varying between about 2 weeks and 5 weeks. It really just depends on your interviewers and how fast they submit your evaluation.

I don't recall anyone on here saying they got a post interview rejection or WL, but that doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't happened. Still, the impression I get is that an interview this early (haha, i think its still relatively early for them) means a very good chance @ acceptance.

Do you have to walk outside for the tour or anything on interview day or is everything in the professional building?

you dont have to go outside at all, even the parking lot is connected directly to the building (one of the many reasons i love it there)

I cannot seem to find an application status page for Rush. I see my application profile, but is there a page that tells you specifically where your file is in the process? Thanks.

At the top it should tell you your status.

At least, that's what I have. I'm not sure if you're post-interview or not or if it would show something different, since I'm pre-interview. :(

yes but . . . i don't think they are done giving out invites either

Aw, Mary. Always so encouraging. :)

I'd love to visit Chicago. *sigh* But day by day, my hopes are dwindling. Oh Rush, why you hurt me so?

Aw, Mary. Always so encouraging. :)

i know . . . i am just so happy about Rush that I want everyone to go there and be my classmate! :(

but honestly when i went there for my interview i really got the impression that they take this process seriously and are very thorough- which unfortunately equals SLOW too. which is good and bad . . . it means that this late in the game there IS still hope. but then again it will suck to hold out hope for so long and hear nothing.

Sorry.. 32 is above Rush's average MCAT too. G'luck elsewhere.

Sorry about the rejections guys. :( To be a tad honest, I kind of wish I'd gotten one too. I just want closure at this point.

May I ask when you were complete?

Lo siento

You won't want closure when you get an interview this spring!

Sorry about the rejections you guys :(

I didn't get rejected (but no interview and complete since early Sept)
Anyone have any idea of how many interviews are left???

Rush Medical College will NOT give an interview to anyone who has <8 on any section of the MCAT. You will get a rejection email.

But they will gladly take your money if your average MCAT section is >8.

Please share this information with people, especially those waiting for an answer.

This made me laugh, but it really is getting so late in the cycle (and I'm getting sick of traveling) that I'd really have to weigh the pros/cons of spending more money to head out to interview if I don't get an invite soon.

just to let you know rush doesn't interview for waitlist spots. every interviewee has a chance

Congratulations! when did you interview? Could u also share ur stats?

Interviewed on 1-20-10. BCPM is 3.60. AO is 3.78. MCAT 30Q. Remember, numbers are just a part of the package.

Just got my acceptance e-mail yesterday! Best feeling in the entire world. Waiting on Loyola and NYMC. First acceptance so far.

Anybody else who interviewed on January 20th get accepted?

Good luck to everyone!

Just noticed your post.. I also interviewed on 1-20-2010! Congrats!!

congrats to you guys who just got accepted!! :D how likely that you'll be attending??

for what it's worth I think Rush >> Loyola and NYMC :)

Okay, I realize there's a lot of stuff floating from students about how great the school is. And when I interviewed, I definitely liked it! But, my personality is the type that needs a reassurance.

So why Rush? How's the match list? I hear its well-respected in Illinois, but what about across the country? Do you love it as much as everyone speculates the students love it?

Sorry if I sound nervous or skeptical... I'm not in the least. I loved Rush, but I want to make sure I wasn't dreaming... haha

Having worked closely with dozens of rush medical students over the years I can say with confidence that the students at Rush truly enjoy their program. Many of Rush's strengths have been articulated by others, but in my opinion they are worth repeating and dovetail with my own experiences and those of close friends and family members... strong focus on clinical medicine, nationally recognized specialty care (neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics and geriatrics, come to mind), new hospital, wonderful community service opportunities, and rotations at Stroger/Cook County Hospital.

The Rush match list is on par with similar institutions across the country and in the Chicagoland area (Loyola and UIC). However, I believe comparing match lists is splitting hairs for the vast majority of future medical students.

Nationally, Rush has an excellent reputation among those practicing in areas related to Rush's strengths (a good, but imperfect guide is the US News and World Reports rankings/survey in which Rush does very well). Among the broader national community Rush is not as well known. Why? In part, it is where its alumni practice, a vast majority of Rush matriculants (75-80%) are Illinois residents and hence many stay put in Illinois after graduation. In addition, Rush does not have a large parent University (undergrad) which would serve to extend its name recognition nationally. All this being said, Rush students do practice and match all over the country, so don't let that deter you.

In short Rush students do seem to really enjoy the school but like all institutions Rush has its strengths and weaknesses.

Over the last year I have seen a number of posts regarding various reasons to select one school over another. In the Chicagoland area, often one has to choose between Rush, UIC, and (or) Loyola. These are just some thoughts on the topic, all schools are great and you cant go wrong. That being said,
I having extensive contacts and relationships at each institution let me throw out a few points that I have not seen in the debate/posts. If anyone has any additional questions about any of the schools feel free to ask and I'll try to respond promptly.

One issue is exposure to the Veterans Administration Health system (VA/VHA) and its relevance to residency. UIC and Loyola both offer students extensive exposure to the VA system. Most academic medical centers have affiliations with VA hospitals and residents often commit a certain percentage of time to working in them. Demonstrating a familiarity with the VA system as a medical student can only strengthen ones residency application. Additionally, Loyola and UIC students can easily complete rotations at Stroger/Cook County hospital whereas the reverse is logistically more complicated.

Another issue is the degree to which an institution embraces its role in educating medical students and acts on this commitment by devoting resources to medical education. Training future doctors is expensive, all schools invest money, and all take this mission/role seriously, and every school produces well-trained doctors. Yet, from my vantage point I would rank the schools: Loyola>Rush=UIC on this measure. This is not about the quality of staff or faculty at any of the respective institutions. I am speaking to differences in how the schools create, refine and execute various programmatic elements relevant to medical education.

A couple of years ago when I shadowed at Rush for several weeks, I remember I got a distinct vibe that the students there were rather negative toward the prospects of medicine (can't blame them, but they really carried it on their shoulder, almost like a institutional culture). I was a nontrad student and a couple of the fourth year Rush students constantly tried to dissuade me from going into medicine. Having worked for years in the corporate world, I didn't think of myself as a googly eyed naive premed, but was still a little overwhelmed by the outright cynicism that seemed to have infected every student I met at Rush. I thought it was quite peculiar at the time as that never happened while I shadowed at Feinberg, UIC and Pritzker. Just didn't feel like there was much of a school spirit at Rush. Maybe it's the way Rush has a lot of private practice physicians at its hospitals?

And when asked to pick between UIC and Rush, the M4s pretty much all said go UIC if that was the cheaper option.

I am currently an M1 at Rush and I totally disagree with you and am pretty sure I speak for most of my class. Everyone that I have meet at Rush is very supportive and very helpful. I have enjoyed my time at Rush a lot and I'm sorry that you had a bad experience, but I can truthfully say that that is NOT how it is at Rush. In regards to school spirit, the profs and teachers all call it the Rush Family, you see attendings giving each other fist bumps in the hall and we are all proud of Rush. Rush is also known as one of the more social medical schools and we definitely have a good time

I actually have direct negative feedback about other schools in the Chicago area from patients through volunteering and preceptorship but I do not like to mention names.

Anyone with any questions feel free to ask. Of course I am biased because I go to Rush, but it just shows that I am enjoying my time here and am proud of it. Your bad experience is unfortunate but your one visit to Rush doesn't qualify you to make that judgement in my opinion.

it seems like Rush has more money to spend on their students. Just compare the anatomy labs at Rush and Loyola. Rush has twice as many cadavers, so that there can be 4 students per as opposed to 8 per cadaver at Loyola. Whether or not this is a big deal depends on you, but importance of anatomy aside, i do think its indicative of financial difficulties. Schools cut down on cadavers because they are expensive, not because they think its advantageous to have less. Loyola is doing all kinds of cost cutting measures, like charging 25 cents to drink water from the cafeteria. Rush is building a brand new hospital. Rush offers free tutoring. They just seem more financially stable, and that makes me feel more comfortable.

Ultimately it comes down to where you feel comfortable, though. I think it's true that these schools are all comparable enough that you can pick any of the three and be just fine. just make sure you go by your own reasons and not anybody else's. mine included.

I agree with your assessment of Rush being in a better overall financial situation. Loyola has had cuts, however few in the medical school. I was thinking of a few things when I originally commented on the schools and specifically Rush...the simulation lab at Rush could be more accessible and larger, ie more simulators, the student facilities could use an update and be more centralized, and from my view the number of programs and initiatives directly related to educating medical students seem more robust at Loyola and UIC. All this being said, Rush has adopted a new strategic plan for its educational mission and it is very impressive. I think it is on the Rush website somewhere.

Another interesting issue when comparing schools, is to be keenly aware that working as a physician at a given institution is very different from being a medical student. Put another way, asking oneself where would I want to work or where I would want to be a medical student are very different questions that often have different outcomes. I think it is difficult to draw inferences from one area to another.

On a side note, knowing Rush, I think the interview day was a good presentation, but it just scratched the surface as to what Rush offer's its students.

Hey don't bite my head off, just sharing my experience of the M3s and M4s I met when I shadowed several different departments at Rush. I thought the faculty was fantastic and extremely accommodating, but I definitely sensed bitterness and general apathy among the M4s.

It's good that you say this is not the case, perhaps I had just caught some of the students at a bad time.

For the record, I'm not a student of Rush, Loyola or UIC.

As a current M2, I also completely disagree with you. I have many friends who are attend medical school around the country and their attitude about their school vastly differs from what I've gleaned from my classmates. One would be hard pressed to find medical students with a more positive opinion of their school than at Rush.

Hey Everybody,

Anyone out there get an acceptance from the 01/27/2010 interview group yet?

sorry for those that got pre interview rejections...for those left does that leave us with a good chance at an interview? did many people receive rejections recently? I was complete late august/early sept I believe..
