Mine was via email, but I don't know if they've changed it up or not. The OOS interviews are a little later than usual this year (Jan. 10th, I think), so it's possible they'll wait a tad longer to send invites. In any event, they should be out this week or next, I'd imagine. I can't see them deliberately forcing you to make travel plans with less than 3 weeks' notice.
 
Well I called the admissions office like last week and they said the committee will be meeting on Friday the 11th and we should hear something by the 15th. Fingers crossed!!!!
 
Hey MilkmanAl, I would like to thank you for providing all the great information and support. I am a UofA alumni but moved recently to attend graduate school. I am an Electrical engineering and am in the process of finishing pre-reqs to apply to medical school.
As a current medical student at UAMS, what is your opinion of the program? The faculty, the curriculum, residency matches etc? I would like to keep my AR residency status, however, I am in Massachusetts now, which also has a great public medical school.
Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. Btw, hiked the Pinnacle mountains yet? It's great!
 
Well, I've posted a lot of detailed info in the past about the school. Search my posts in this thread and its brother from last year for specifics. In short, though, I like it a lot. The people are great, the facilities are all brand new, the professors are accessible, and the staff in general is pretty awesome. Tuition is cheap - really cheap for residents - and there's lots of good housing nearby.

Residency matches are sort of misleading, it seems. Yeah, we match tons of people here, but from what I gather, most of them don't want to go anywhere else. The people who do leave mainly go to what I assume are at least above-average residencies, based on the school names.

I'd definitely give it a shot. It's not all roses - anatomy here is HARD and in a crappily ventilated sub-basement - but I think you'll enjoy it like I have. Feel free to drop me a line any time you need some info.
 
The 15th?! I can't wait that long! I'm DYING over here! AHH!!

PS - Pinnacle Mountain is awesome. The hubs and I hiked it when we were out in LR in September. I just wish I'd worn my hiking boots instead of running shoes. It started to rain while we were coming back down and the rocks get very slick when they're wet.
 
MilkmanAl, thanks for the info. Really appreciated. What is UAMS's view towards non-trad applicants? Provided, qualifications are in par with traditional applicants, do non-trads face a more difficult path? I know of my friend who just started this fall at UAMS, was an engineer just like me, had the same degrees as I did (BS and MS). I guess that gives me some hope, but I was wondering if you could give a more general view of non-trads at UAMS.

Just judging by the classes I'm familiar with - mostly mine and the M3's - I'm going to go out on a limb and say that UAMS looks quite favorably on non-trads. Our classes tend to be a bit older with an average age around 25, and I would imagine that the experience level of older students fits nicely with the well-rounded doctor image they're trying to mold you into. You just don't get professional-level business savvy or extensive experience in another field from staying in school perpetually with the sole goal of getting into med school. I think UAMS appreciates that non-trads have a little extra to bring to the social aspect of patient care and values them accordingly.

UAMS works in mysterious ways. They must pull some crazy hours around selection time, or something, because I got my invite around 9 P.M. I've also had Ms. DuPuy get back to me within an hour on weekends. That said, I would take them at their word. If they say they'll be contacting people until the 15th, you can bet they probably will be.

what? that was an ubber fast turnaround since the committee just met today! yikes, now Im sad I think they're gonna pass me up. Thats suxs since my whole family lives in arkansas 🙁
 
On average, how many out-of-staters are invited for an interview, and how many get accepted?
 
I'm honestly not sure since the class size has changed so dramatically over the last few years. For my class, there were ~130 interviews for up to 32 OOS spots. I think we ended up getting 25 or 26 OOS matriculants. I'd say it's safe to assume that there will be approximately 4-5 interviews given for each spot they want to fill.

I wonder how many offers were given for those spots?

For example, at Creighton yesterday they said they interviewed 670, and gave 340 acceptance offers for 130 spots (about that). Oh well maybe I'll get an invite soon :\
 
well being the crazy person that I am, I called this morning and they said they're not done yet going through out of state apps so there is still hope! She said everyone should hear something by friday either way. GL to all

I also got my invitation on Friday and look forward to meeting you all! 🙂 Anyone planning to attend the art exhibit? Milkman, do you know how the art event will be structured (i.e., any formal set up or do we wander around on our own?, will we be meeting Admissions Committee members there?)?

The letter says they will be interviewing over 100 OOS applicants, so if they follow Milkman's stats this year ~25% OOS interviewees can expect to matriculate....

To those still waiting for a email, the committee is giving the first batch of people until Dec 17th to confirm.

Art event? I have absolutely no idea. That hasn't been done before, as far as I'm aware. The tour is a quick (and not terribly useful) run through the library, outside the anatomy lab, and clinical skills center. Those of you lucky enough to have me as a tour guide may get a little bit of extra info. 😉
 
Everyone let us know when you get any news. Hope everyone's finals are going well. I kind of miss them. We get out for break on Dec. 18th so I am counting the days. It's hard to believe the year is half over. It seems like most of the posters in this thread are OOS. Are there any instate applicants? Good luck everyone and I hope to see you January 10th.
 
Yeah, I can't imagine anyone in Arkansas doing anything on a Sunday that's organized and on a large scale that didn't have to do with church. I guess the interview tour dates were misprinted or something. Anyway, good luck again to all of you, even you lurkers out there. 😉

Those of you OOS ppl with interviews would you mind posting your stats? Just want to see if its worth reapplying to next year...

Also- I didn't send a letter of significant ties... probably hurt quite a bit.

Anyway congrats to all who got interviews
 
So today is the 17th...will we know about our OOS status by now :\ I would guess tomorrow is the latest they'll tell us
 
so being the crazy person that I am, I called again and the lady on the phone said they sent out all the invites 🙁 so now they are just waiting for all thos people to respond yay or nay and then they will begin to pull form the alternate list. Unfortunately she wasn't able to tell me whether I was on the alternate list or not. She said however we should know something either way by the middle of next week for sure. So looks like just more waiting and seeing... im sad inside now

Soooo basically we got rejected...****.
 
Since the interviews are blind, does this mean that everyone is on a level playing field coming into the interview? Or does the committee bring back out the MCAT, GPA, etc and add that to the report made by the interviewers when making decisions for the OOS applicants?
 
Your entire application is considered after the interview, but your interviewers are unaware of your credentials. I'm not entirely sure how they separate OOS students, but since the adcom uses a points system,* being a resident may count for a certain number of points or something. The law is that "equally qualified" Arkansas residents will get accepted over OOS applicants.

*Each adcom rates the aspects of your application on some scale and totals the points. The totals are then averaged. They then go down the list accepting and waitlisting people.

Here's hoping you guys get some good news today. It's the last chance, I guess. 🙁

Yeah don't worry about me- I applied to 25. However I really wanted Arkansas since I like the location and its very close to family.

Scratch that, it just came. That sucks. At least I'll be an Arkansas resident when I reapply next year. Silver lining, right?
 
WOOOOO!!!!!!!! I just got an interview invite. My first interview. I'm stoked. Anyone have any advice for this OOSer?
