It's May 8th according to the second look thread. Someone there confirmed it with the admission's office.

I was told by an accepted applicant it was May 16th

It's May 8th. They sent an email to accepted people a couple weeks ago. All it said was to keep the date open though and that more details would be released later.

Weird! I will inform my friend that he is mistaken!

Does anyone know if UCI's financial aid package is historically more generous than the other UC's?
no its not. if anything it might be less generous. Most students get a standard grant of like 5k or so but not much more. Im not sure how it works for need based and stuff but they certainly arent like u mich or other schools that just throw money around like crazy. I wouldnt be expecting a full tuition scholarship or anything if thats what you are asking.

I am asking because I received an interview invite last night, but don't think I will go there over other schools I have been accepted to already unless they offer a much better financial aid package.

Also, can anyone with experience with both schools tell me what good things UCI offers compared to UCLA?

Yea, dont count on getting a hefty scholarship unless you are super genius or extremely disadvantaged economically.

Anteaters are way cooler than Bruins. End of story.

Hey RySerr,
I saw this topic pop up on the UCSD thread and was curious about UCI. Are there internal rankings at UCI now that the P/F will start next year? If so you have any idea how it works?

Haha BTW, thanks so much for being our go-to guy this cycle.

Hey RySerr,

Haha BTW, thanks so much for being our go-to guy this cycle.

P/F started this year for the first years.... So, our "internal ranking" system is pretty insignificant in terms of its importance. There are no rankings in terms of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5......104.

There are "groupings." How these groups are determined is kind of vague, but basically it will take each year into consideration. The first year is LEAST important, the second year is a little more important, the third year is MOST important, and then i'm not sure where 4th year falls in but i think things are pretty much decided by then.

For the first two years the way your "grouping" is determined by your scores on your tests and classes. Same for the second year. Third year is H/P/F and they look at the feedback you get from the physicians you are rotating with in the different departments. They might take into consideration STEP 1 too i dont remember, dont quote me tho.

So how then how are you grouped? I dont remember the exact cutoffs, but basically students are grouped into the top 10%, top 30%, top 90%, bottom 10%...something along those lines.

What will residencies see? Nowhere is it going to say that you were in top 10, top 30, etc. What all of this will add up to be is ONE WORD in your Dean's letter, which will be sent out with your app as you apply to residency. If you are in the top 10%, they will use the word "excellent" when describing you. If you are in the top 30% they might use the word "great" to describe you. Top 90%, "good." Bottom 10%, "satisfactory."

Those might not be the exact words of choice, but that is literally all it is. It really amounts to nothing, and should be one of the last things on your mind, at least at UCI (although you'll still find people worrying about it).

anyone know when the last invites will/have go/gone out for this year?

There are two interview days left, March 17th and April 12th. I dunno if they are done sending out invitations for the last date, but theyve definitely already started because I was given an applicant to host for that interview day (I was emailed about him last week).

I'd be persistent. These last few interview days there have been quite a few people how withdraw last minute. Thats pretty f'ed up if you ask me b/c they basically just took someone else's spot that could have been interviewing. So who knows, maybe if you call and ask if there have been any withdrawals and/or new spots to fill up for interview day it will work. Its a long shot, but you never know.

That would be pretty awesome if that would work. Like calling and asking "hey, you wouldn't have an opening for an interview tomorrow?" And then getting invited that way. Well thanks for giving me some hope at this point. It would be beyond words to be invited to UCI, especially this late in the game! :xf::xf:

Seriously, you have nothing to lose. I'd call on Tuesday and say "Hey i'm going to be in the area and was wondering if there were any spots available for the upcoming interviews." Or even better, just show up on Wed and act surprised when they don't have your name down, hahaha. That would be the best story ever.

uci admissions is so strange...but i guess in a good way for those of us wanting in🙂.

I loved UCI, but wish there was a way of knowing what would happen to tuition over the next 4 years due to the CA budget meltdown.

"Current UC policy requires that new fees be no higher than the average cost of comparable public schools. But when UC's regents meet in San Francisco later this month, they will consider changing the policy by removing one word: "public."

I know that tuition of every school goes up ~3-5% every year, but going from avg. public to avg. private is from around 20k to 40k. Hopefully this will get voted down, however. I mean if there's no tuition break, whats the purpose of having state schools to begin with?

scary stuff.

its going to happen its just a matter of time. UC tuition will soon be more expensive then private schools due to the insane cost of living out here. Sometimes i wish i was a resident of another state lol 🙁. I guess 250k in debt here i come joy!!

Wow, congratulations! That's soo cool 🙂.

Ooohhh, I can't wait til it's my turn. Come on, UCI, I love you too!! 🙂

to answer the question regarding waitlist movement: i was accepted off the waitlist on friday!

background: i interviewed in november, was waitlisted in early december. sent in an update letter about a week and a half ago, not expecting to hear anything for a couple months but feeling anxious and needing to do something constructive. i was in mexico for a few days (with my cell phone turned off) this weekend. yesterday, i checked my voice mail when i was sitting in line at the tecate border. hearing dr. peterson's voice on my first message definitely made the border wait seem way shorter (and the churro and tortilla guys definitely made out well on the situation...apparently i buy food when i am ecstatic with nowhere to go!).

uc irvine, i love you.

I'm declining my April 12th interview. Hope one of you gets it. Good luck!

:roflcopter: That just sounds crazy enough to work... I wish I had the guts to do something like that! I also kind of wish I lived more than an hour away from campus so that by saying I'm in the area would not sound like I'm taking advantage of using the "in the area" plea. Maybe I'll call Wed early in the morning and say hey I can be there in like 45 minutes in case anybody doesn't show up!

Thank you banister, the world needs more thoughtful people like you that do not wait until the day before to decline and ruin someone else's chances pointlessly! May this bring you good medical school karma (altho im assuming you already had some good fortune turning down an invite here)

Congrats! I got her message when I was on the plane had just landed in Miami for my interviews. Passengers freaked out when they saw my face as I was listening to the message🙂)) And it was a Saturday!!! Great feeling! I ended up not interviewing in Miami or anywhere else since UCI was my top choice!

Congratulations!!

I was told my the admin office movement won't occur til May...did anyone else receive a off wait-list acceptance lately?

thanks! i had two friends in the car when i got the call...they quickly figured out something was going on based on my face. it's never been so convenient to be with people who are all fluent in sign language--i signed to them what was going on while listening to her message!

even after the call had sunk in, i didn't believe it was real. i was convinced they had made a mistake and i would never receive the acceptance packet (since they hadn't intended to call me in the first place). when i got the confirmation email that they had received my intent to register forms, i couldn't contain my excitement--if they did make a mistake, it's too late to turn back now 🙂

now i just sit and wait nervously for prime-lc decisions...

Has anyone from 2/22 interviews heard yet? I'm assuming we might this week or the next.

If you interviewed 2/22, you're only at the 3 week mark. Turnaround time is about 4-6 weeks, with waitlists coming out earlier than acceptances.

hey wicky, fyi: i interviewed then too and haven't heard back.

off topic, did you know that the password for the login page isn't case sensitive? this saves me at least 3 seconds every login now, and approx 7-10 seconds every day!

What is the average USMLE (Part I) score at Irvine? Is this a Pass/Fail school or do they have grades?🙂

I heard USC is 233 and Stanford is 235. Is this true?

They don't release the official step I scores, but we do very well. Last year I was told that they had the highest scores in CA the year befor. We are always near the the top tho thats fo sho. Part of the reason is they give you FOREVER to study for the boards. I dont know what other schools give, but I can't see any other school giving any longer than we have. The second years are already done with class. They have one last shelf exam next week, and then they have the rest of the time focus only on the boards. That is an insane amount of time, since you dont have to take your boards until end of May/early june (i dont konw the exact date). Thats over two months of pure study time. Other schools you will be in class learning new material as late as 2 weeks before the test. Its actually a pretty big deal to have that much time. There is also a Kaplan course available on our campus. Other local CA schools come to UCI for the purpose of taking this course, and we have it held on our campus. Pretty sweet.

Yeah you are right but it seems like I have been waiting forever.

That's a nice tip and probably will save me some time too. Most of the time I use my iPhone and takes a while to enter all the info, especially the asterick because it's on the third keyboard.

Hopefully we hear back the good news from UCI soon

Hey guys,
Yesterday was my 5th week! Lets hope that I can make it through onto acceptances!!!! I interviewed on Feb 10th! As anyone heard back who interviewed then or earlier?

Yeah you are right but it seems like I have been waiting forever.

I will admit to being slightly neurotic myself. I went through this thread and looked at when people interviewed versus when they were notified -- waitlist notifications have all seemed to be posted on Mon/Tues with an average ~4 week wait post-interview. Applicants who are accepted are notified by phone call later on in the week (Saturdays seem to be a popular day) with an average ~5 week wait post-interview. So for us (I interviewed the same day), I'd start checking next Monday.

Hello MiniMoo,
I hope I get in too...They have waited an extra 2 weeks to give me results so...I am hoping that your observation of 5 weeks post interview means good news!

People have been waitlisted at the 5+ week mark before, but for the most part I think it's a good sign. I should be hearing results soon myself. I'm predicting the next batch of WL notifications this Monday/Tuesday. :scared: Good luck to us both!

Spring break for medical school differs from the undergrad calendar, I think. At least for UCLA it does. My friend who is an MS1 there had spring break already. Was hoping it would be the same at UCI. 🙂

Yea, undergrads started spring break today. The MS2s started their 'spring break' today too, altho its not much of one seeing as they have a shelf exam when they get back. MS1s have it the following week (starting Thursday the 25th at 12pm omg i can't wait).
